New In Town – Sweet Salt Bakery

22 Apr

Hanna Wolff, owner, of Sweet Salt Bakery is a woman after my own heart.  Hanna moved to Vancouver from Germany in 2006 after graduating from university.   She opened her German bakery, Sweet Salt Bakery, 3497 Fraser Street (corner of 19th & Fraser) in October 2012. Here you will find a great selection of German pastries as well as hearty breads and buns.  Everything is made on site daily from scratch. Confession time, I must admit I do have a soft spot for this area of East Vancouver having grown up just blocks away at Fraser & 11th.   As well, having parents from Germany, I was raised on German baking and am always on the hunt for any and all authentic European baking.  Sweet Salt Bakery certainly delivers on all fronts.

Sweet Salt Bakery is a quaint bakery with some old fashioned charm but at the same is family friendly.  The front corner houses an area for young children to play.  Speaking of play, Hanna also offers Kids Baking Classes for $25 from 3:00 p.m.– 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays for children 4 and up.  Next scheduled class is this Saturday, April 27th making animal shaped buns.  Hanna has in the past also held baking classes for adults.  Sweet Salt Bakery regularly updates their Facebook Page with their latest offerings.  Stop by and say hello (or in German, Guten Tag), if you really want to make Hanna feel welcome.   Sweet Salt Bakery is open 7 days a week. Hours are generally are 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. most days save for Mondays which are 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sundays 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. If you are interested in the baking classes, you can email Hanna at or check out her Facebook Page for the latest updates.

UPDATED: 2017 Note the Sweet Salt Bakery is no longer and The Pie Hole has taken over this space, but still a delicious space.
