PROOF At Havana Theatre February 18 – 28

16 Feb

ProofFlickering Light Productions presents PROOF at the Havana Theatre, 1212 Commercial Drive, from February 18th to February 28th.  PROOF is the story of a young woman named Catherine. She is the daughter of Robert, a brilliant mathematician who misplaces both his brilliance and his sanity in his later years. Catherine, who is a budding mathematician herself, lives in her father’s shadow. Catherine gives up her schooling and her most creatively productive years in order to take care of her father. After her father’s death, a former student of her father’s comes to examine his papers, hoping to find valuable material in his notebooks. Catherine instantly distrusts his motives. Her sister Claire, questioning Catherine’s mental health, wants to move her from Chicago to New York.

This play by David Auburn is a compelling human drama. He reveals how fragile our hold on reality is while at the same time reminding us that finding trust and love is even more difficult than discovering truth.  PROOF begins Wednesday, February 18th at Havana Theatre and runs until February 28th.  Tickets are available in advance from Eventbrite from $19. Please note this play contains strong language and is not recommended for children.

An East Van Panto: Cinderella At The York Theatre December 3rd to 28th

28 Oct

EastVanPanto

This December, if you want to have some fun, check out the East Van Panto: Cinderella playing at The York Theatre, 639 Commercial Drive, starting December 3rd, 2014.   This production is brought to you by the creative minds at Theatre Replacement.

If you missed last year’s performance of Jack & The Beanstalk, you missed a whole lot of fun! We recommend that you don’t miss this year’s East Van Panto: Cinderella. What is a Panto you might ask? The definition of Panto (another name for Pantomime) is a tradition of holiday musical comedy theatre. Pantomime takes familiar fairy tale,s in this case Cinderella, and injects music, contemporary references and (best of all) audience participation to create raucous, noisy entertainment that’s fun for everyone in the family. And yes, there will be many East Van references that you will be able to identify with in the show that is sure to make everyone laugh.  The East Van Panto is open to all ages 5 and up. Tickets start at $19, family packs are available which include 4 tickets for $100.   Tickets are available at The Cultch either in person, by phone or online. The show begins December 3rd 7:00 pm and continues till December 28th. For those looking for a matinee, there are many 2:00 pm shows starting December 6th. For more information on tickets and performances, visit The Cultch.  We’ll be seeing you there!

Car Free Day Sunday June 15th

14 Jun

CarFreeDay

Car Free Day began 10 years ago on Commercial Drive. The idea of organizers was to reclaim the streets and oppose highway expansion and more traffic. Today, organizers still believe that fewer cars equals more community. Car Free Day has now expanded to four neighbourhoods. The festival sites are 100% organized by local volunteers and each festival has a unique flavor and is a family friendly event. Lots to see and do for all ages. In East Vancouver, find Car Free Day on:

Commercial Drive (Venables to Grandview on Commercial Drive) Noon–7:00 pm

On the Drive, you can expect to find roller disco, parading drummers, healing gardens, DJs spinning tunes, the musical talents of Rhythm and Cello which will hold court at 7th Avenue starting at Noon.

Main Street (Broadway to 30th on Main Street) Noon–7:00 pm

On Main Street, you will find lots of mini-festivals, community-supported stages with dozens of bands, multiple kids zones, artisan markets, roller derby and skateboarding. While there, be sure to check out the new parklet at 21st Avenue and Main Street.  We hear Brown Paper Packages will be located between 23rd and 24th with their delicious ice cream sandwiches. If you are a fan of honey and/or bees, Main Street Honey Shoppe will be the place to be Sunday afternoon. They will be holding honey extraction demonstrations from 1 – 5 pm with a live bee beard demonstration at 2:00 pm. Now that will be something to see.

Come out and celebrate Vancouver’s diverse neighbourhoods and our community spaces!
