18th Annual Holiday Market Croatian Cultural Centre December 14th

THolidayMarkethe Vancouver Farmers Market presents the 18th Annual Holiday Market which is a seasonal celebration of food and art.   The event takes place at the Croatian Cultural Centre, 3250 Commercial Drive (at 15th Avenue) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. this Saturday, December 14th.   You will find over 75 vendors offering everything from delicious food items such as cheese, fresh bread, olive oil, chocolates jams, coffee and honey as well as handmade jewellery, delectable desserts including homemade pies plus home accessories and lots of items perfect for gift giving this Christmas or edible eats for entertaining over the holidays.

Also, on hand will be Vancouver Tool Library. Stop by and learn more about this interesting cooperative tool lending library in East Vancouver.  Or stop by and visit Old Country Pierogi which is a local family business that operates a fully self-contained food cart offering pierogies (regular and gluten free ) with various fillings, potato pancakes, hunter’s stew, red borscht soup and cabbage rolls.  Note, the outdoor winter market at Nat Bailey Stadium runs as usual from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Anyone who attends both markets is eligible to get a ballot stamped at each market for a chance to win a hardcover copy of Edible: A Celebration of Local Food.

Holiday Craft Fair Kensington Community Centre December 7th

You are invited to the 6th Annual Holiday Craft Fair this Saturday, December 7th at Kensington Community Centre, 5175 Dumfries Street. Kensington Community Centre is located at 37th Avenue & Knight Street and will host 58 vendors this Saturday.  You can expect to find lots of handmade and handcrafted items made by local residents. Some of many items available include jewellery, pottery, ceramics, cards, paintings, sculptures, bath and body products, Christmas décor as well as clothing, handbags, hair accessories and  much more.  There will be a food concession on site with soup, sandwiches, hot dogs, snacks and drinks. There will also be raffle and door prizes as well as a collection for the Vancouver Food Bank.   For your food bank donation, you will receive one free raffle ticket.  The craft fair gets under way at 10:00 a.m. and goes till 4:00 p.m. Free admission. 

Cousin Harley & The Broken Mirrors At The Wise Hall Friday December 6th

This Friday night, the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street, is welcoming Vancouver’s high energy rockability/western swing/country tastic trio Cousin Harley along with their guests The Broken Mirrors.  You can expect classic honky tonk, Western swing and some blues from Cousin Harley.  The musical experts at the Wise are saying that  “The Broken Mirrors have the musicianship of Wilco, the energy of The Talking Heads, the style and humour of Beck, and the quirkiness of early Elvis Costello”.   Should be a great show all around.   Tickets for this show stomping good time are only $15 and available online at Brown Paper Tickets or in person at Ret Cat Records, Highlife Records or The Wise Hall & Lounge downstairs.  Doors open at 8:00 pm.

Baaad Anna’s 5th Annual Knit-A-Thon-Fundraiser December 8th for Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre

Baaad Anna’s is hosting its 5th Annual Knit-A-Thon this Sunday, December 8th from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.  You are invited to come down for an hour, two or whatever time you can spare and knit hats, scarves and mittens for the folks at the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.  Baaad Anna’s will also be accepting donations of canned food and cash for the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.   For all those knitters that contribute food, you will receive 15% off all yarn this Sunday.   If you have yarn to donate, that is welcomed as well.  For any yarn that is not used, it will redistributed to local schools and seniors groups.  Also, donations of yarn can be dropped at the store anytime during regular business hours: Saturday to Tuesday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm and Wednesday to Friday 11:00 am – 7:00 pm.   For more information, contact Baaad Anna’s at T: 604-255-2577 or info@baaadannas.com.  I hear there will be a great spread of treats, fruit, hot chocolate and tea for all those who participate in the Knit-A-Thon.  Baaad Anna’s is one of many local businesses giving back to the community this Christmas.  Come out and support this great cause.

Pet Pictures with Santa at the Vancouver SPCA December 1st

PetPhotosWithSantaDec1stCome out and support the Vancouver SPCA this weekend by bringing your pet for a photo with Santa.  The event will take place at the BC Vancouver SPCA Branch, 1205 East 7th Avenue, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.   For a $20 donation, you will receive a digital photograph with 100% of the proceeds going to support the animals in the Vancouver Shelter. While you are at the shelter, feel free to drop off an item from their Wish List. The Vancouver SPCA is always grateful to receive donations in kind of items they use often such as canned or dry cat & dog food, treats are also welcomed. They can also use Cherrios, Craisens and Shreddies for the small animals which they love.  Gently used bedding and towels are always needed as are toys to keep animals from getting bored or frustrated.  Every donation counts no matter how small.  If you wish to see the other items the Vancouver SPCA is grateful to receive, visit their website at Vancouver SPCA.

Funny lady, Sara Bynoe, is showcasing her next installment of Deliciously Rotten Writing this Friday, November 29th at Hot Art Wet City, 2206 Main Street. In honour of the upcoming filming of Fifty Shades of Grey in Vancouver, Sara will be highlighting the absurdity within the pages of this book as well as those following in the series, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. This promises to be an entertaining evening and then some. There is limited seating available. If you wish to attend this event, tickets are $10 available online at EventBrite. Doors open 7:30 pm.
