BlueCheeseHalifaxIf you haven’t stopped in at les amis du FROMAGE on 843 East Hastings, you are missing out. If you love cheese or want to learn more about cheese, this is the place to go. This fall they will be sharing some of their vast knowledge of cheese and offering some great classes in store including:

Wine and Cheese 101 – September 15th 6:30 – 8:30 pm $60

One of the owners Allison Spurrell will provide you with a roadmap for matching various cheese types and the wines that best suit them. Allison will introduce cheese basics, including milk types, textures, flavours, how to care for and serve fine cheeses. You will learn how best to pair wine with cheese. And yes, of course, there will be samples so you can discover what is perfect for you.

Ole Espana – September 30th 6:30 – 8:30 pm $65

Allison will take you on a tour of taste with a selection of Spanish cheeses, charcuterie, preserves, olives and olive oils from Spain. We hear this tasting will again include some fantastic wine pairings including Cava and sherry.

Vive la Quebec – October 27th 6:30 – 8:30 pm $70

Allison is back to take you on a taste tour of Québec’s finest cheeses paired with some Canadian wines. You can expect to taste a range of cheeses including goat, firm, washed rind and triple cream, paired with some Eastern Canadian wines and we hear maybe a Québec beer or two. This event will finish up with a bite of their home made Tourtiere.

If you hadn’t heard les amis du FROMAGE has been voted “Best Cheese Shop” by readers of The Georgia Straight, The Westender and The Courier. They have another location in Kitsilano, but the tasting events are being held at the East Van location. Tickets for these are available online.

Pop Up Shop at les amis du Fromage With 3 Local Vendors November 22nd and 23rd

16 Nov

TheLemonSquare2Les amis du FROMAGE is hosting another delicious Pop Up Shop during the weekend of the Eastside Culture Crawl. Their East Van location at 843 East Hastings is a hop, skip and jump from many of the artist studios participating in the Eastside Culture Crawl on November 22nd and 23rd. We encourage you to stop by les amis du Fromage between Noon and 4:00 pm to check out one of these great local vendors.  On hand will be The Salty Cookie Company which is the brainchild of Meredith Kaufman who has been a pastry chef for many years and The Lemon Square which make delicious handmade lemon squares with fresh lemons, butter and a dusting of coconut. Very addictive speaking from experience.  Natalie Ferrari-Morton brings you her locally made East Van Jams.  Natalie is all about “more love, less sugar”. Unlike conventional jams, East Van Jam is made with a 4:1 fruit to sugar ratio. That means four cups of real fruit (not juice from concentrate) to one cup of sugar and using 95% BC grown fruit (organic as often as possible and some straight from East Van backyards).  You can bet there will be lots of samples on hand.  Les amis du fromage will be open from 10:00 am- 6:00 pm during the weekend of the Eastside Culture Crawl (November 22nd & 23rd). Come out and support these budding entrepreneurs and, of course, the artists participating in the Eastside Culture Crawl!

Vista D’oro Pop Shoppe at 843 East Hastings Until Nov. 24th

18 Nov

VistaDOroGiftBox

So after taking in some amazing art during the Eastside Culture Crawl on Sunday, I did manage to swing by the Vista D’oro Pop Up Shoppe. Vista D’oro Farms & Winery is located in Langley and having visited their farm, it is such a treat to have them here in East Vancouver. If you didn’t manage to get in a taste of this great little shop this weekend, best do so quick. The Preservatory Pop Up Shoppe is only up until November 24th at 843 East Hastings Street next to les amis du fromage

If you have any food lovers on your Christmas list, there preserves make for great gifts whether a housewarming gift, or part of gift basket for that foodie you know. There are many great flavours to choose from including Peach & Lemon Verbena with Champagne, Mango, Passionfruit & Kirsch, Pineapple Candied Ginger & Sake, Spiced Cranberry & Ice Wine, Raspberry Merlot with Peppercorns, Fig and Walnut Wine to name but a few.  The one that sold me was the Plum with Vanilla and Star Anise which for a 220g jar retails for $9.95. The flavour of the star anise just lingers on the taste buds and was amazing with a hint of licorice. There are tastings spoons for all flavours on hand, so you can try before you buy. You can also purchase ‘Trio packs’ of three perserves for $33 which includes recipes for each preserve. They come in five varieties to appeal to specific taste buds such as The Entertainer, The Bachelor, The Mixologist, The Sweet Tooth and The Eupicurean. There are also a few smaller 40 ml jars available in two of the flavours, but best be quick on those before they are gone.

Also in store this week from a neighbouring farm in Langley are their friends from Lavender Eight Farms offering Lavender Sugar. The lavender sugar can be used in tea or what caught my attention was using it in baking. Lavender sugar in that Christmas shortbread or pound cake?  Sounds pretty delicious to me.  Small jars of Lavender Sugar are available for $6.95 or a bag is $18.95. Vista d’Oro Farms has also collaborated with Chocolate Arts to create exquisite chocolates using their wine or preserves from the farm.

les amis du fromage will have a few of their preserves on hand after November 24th, but if you want the selection and the opportunity to taste test all the great varieties, I suggest you stop by before November 24th. The Vista D’oro Pop Up Shoppe is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
