History Walks Are Back This February and March Plus 2 New Ghost Tours

HistoryWalkGrainJames Johnstone is back again with his popular historical walking tours. Also returning with him for a couple of the history walks is Kati Ackermann. Kati is Vancouver’s own paranormal investigator and ghost whisperer.   Kati is the founder of Vancouver Spooks Paranormal and will be partnering with James for 2 tours. The first tour will be in Mount Pleasant on March 7th and the second in Strathcona on March 14th.  The route and content of these two Ghost Walks are the same as the regular Mount Pleasant and East End walking tours with the addition of Kati’s perspective which will be tuned into spirits along the way.   Note, the ghost walks are limited to 30 people and sell out quickly so if you are interested, we suggest reserving your spot. James Johnstone is back again with his popular historical walking tours. This time he has a couple extra tours with Kati Ackermann, Vancouver’s own paranormal investigator and ghost whisperer.   Kati is the founder of Vancouver Spooks Paranormal and will be partnering with James for 2 tours. The first one will be in Mount Pleasant on August 31st and the second in Strathcona on September 14th. East End History Walks With James Johnstone Are Back

Next scheduled walks are Saturday, March 9th and Saturday, March 23rd.  James will take you on a tour of one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Strathcona. The tour kicks off at 10:00 am starting from 696 East Hastings Street at Heatley. This historical walking tour is a culmination of years of researching over 250 homes in the East End. Although you will find architecture is a theme on this tour, James will also focus on social history and how waves of immigrants established themselves in this area before moving on to other parts of the city. The tour will also touch on the impact of portside industries like BC Sugar, the prohibition and the proliferation of bootlegging as well as the City of Vancouver’s attempts to wipe out “urban blight”.  Each tour runs for approximately 2 to 2.5 hours the cost is $20 for each tour. Workshop: Preserving The Summer Bounty August 8, 2018

PreservingSummerBountyAugust8Our friends at The Uncommon Café, 477 Powell Street, have a workshop lined up this August that will help preserve some of your summer bounty. On August 8th, Valentine Kitamura owner of Tartine Maple will lead a class at The Uncommon Café. If you don’t know this space already, it is great little café and commissary located across the street from Oppenheimer Park. In this summer workshop, Valentine will show you how to make some delish preserves while also teaching you some basic preserving techniques. Some of what you’d be making in this upcoming class include Apple & Jalapeno Jelly, Vodka Drunken Cherries, Salsa and Canned Peaches. Did we mention these folks know how to do workshops? While learning about preserving, sip on a glass of wine during the class along with a snack or two. You will go home a 4 oz jar size of each item made and printed recipe cards. East Van History Walks With James Johnstone Back This Summer

James Johnstone is back with his popular historical walking tours this August and September. On Saturday, August 18th, James will take you on a tour of one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Strathcona. The tour kicks off at 10:00 am starting from 696 East Hastings Street at Heatley. This historical walking tour is a culmination of years of researching over 250 homes in the East End. Although you will find architecture is a theme on this tour, James will also focus on social history and how waves of immigrants established themselves in this area before moving on to other parts of the city. The tour will also touch on the impact of portside industries like BC Sugar, the prohibition and the proliferation of bootlegging as well as the City of Vancouver’s attempts to wipe out “urban blight”. If you can’t make this date, he will be doing this tour again on Saturday, September 1st and 15th.  James is also offering another tour on September 8th, which focuses on the Working/Wild Side of Vancouver’s East End. This tour has some interesting local history points including the birthplace of Venice Bakery, home of actor John Qualin (Grapes of Wrath), home of maternal grandparents of Michael Buble, home of boxing legend Jimmy McLarnin, birthplace of former Premier Dave Barrett as well as some interesting history on Union Market which was once a Chinese laundry and bottlegging operation. James has much more history for you.  Each tour runs for approximately 2 to 2.5 hours the cost is $20 for each tour. Call To Local Artists – Create Something Amazing In Strathcona

If you are a local artist and would like to see your work featured publicly, then be sure to check out Strathcona’s new project 10 Blocks of Passion Street Gallery.  Some of you may have heard Stathcona’s aim to be one of the City’s most walkable communities. “Made In Strathcona” and the Strathcona Business Improvement Association are taking the next step to make this happen.  They aim to feature original art work that tells stories about the Strathcona neighbourhood.  They would like to bring the streets to life.  Local artists are invited to create art installations for public display in the neighbourhood which will be showcased until the end of the summer.  Applications are now being accepted until January 29th. Kyubu Market Launches September 9, 2017 In Strathcona

You are invited to check out a new project that has been many months in the making Kyubu Market.  Pronounced kyoo boo, this new market is one of the tiniest shops in East Vancouver located in the MakerLabs at 780 East Cordova Street. Outside of their retail space, Kyubu Market is an online marketplace with one-of-a-kind and custom pieces from a variety of makers & artisans. Kyubu Market is the brainchild of Jen Yamasaki and Gloria Kang. Their varied backgrounds including law, business, science, graphic design, marketing and communications puts them in a unique position to assist and feature independent artists and makers from across Canada.  Gloria and Jen already have a long list of artisans that are being featured on their site including Konisa Studio, Cord & Stone, Joanne Sawatsky, DIG Leather, Bare Skin Bar, Steidle Woodworking Co., SAD Magazine, Piton Pottery and many more. To see the full list of artisans featured visit the online marketplace at Kyubu Market, or check out the Grand Opening on Saturday, September 9th which kicks off at 6:00 pm and runs till 9:30 pm. The event is being billed as a Garden Party. Walk Strathcona Summer Series June 23 to July 16, 2017

MadeInStrathcona2017The Strathcona Business Improvement Association (BIA) has created some new events for their Walk Strathcona Summer Series which aim is to encourage a vibrant pedestrian destination.  The Strathcona BIA geographic covers the area from Clark Drive in the East to Gore Avenue in the West, and from Railway Street in the North to Venables Street in the South. There is quite an array of businesses situated within this neighbourhood which is one of the older established neighbourhoods in Vancouver. This year, the Strathcona BIA is hosting a few events which help you get familiar with what this area has to offer. First up is the Strathcona Street Party happening June 24th from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.  They’ve invited the Vancouver Mural Fest to join the party. You will have the opportunity to watch 9 large scale murals go live on Cordova Street along with live music, craft beer and pizza. To learn more about the event, visit the Facebook page for Strathcona Street Party.   On Saturday, June 24th, they will be hosting walking tours at 1:00 pm, 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm.  You will get a sense of some of the history of this hear, the diverse business community and uncover some gems. The tour will take you to a Pop Up Shop where you can learn more about their Most Walkable Street initiative and their upcoming events which continue to July 16th. All the events are free to attend. We’ve participated in Made in Strathcona tours in the past and we have say, this is a vibrant community with much to offer.  If you haven’t checked it out recently, you may wish to go for a wander. Some favourites we love in this area include les amis du Fromage, Homestead Junction, The Heatley and newcomer Stratchona Beer.

The Uncommon Café Hosts Delish Workshops This June

UncommonCafeCanningJune2017Our friends at The Uncommon Café, 477 Powell Street, have another great line up of classes this Spring. Whether you wish to brush up on your baking skills, canning skills or need a little help with that summer party, they’ve got you covered. Classes are led by Valentine Kitamura owner of Tartine Maple. Valentine was born and raised in France and is a chef that has worked in hotels in Paris, Singapore, New Orleans and Toronto.  She now works with The Uncommon Café, a commissary and café and regularly hosts classes.  We’ve set out below their next series of classes which we expect will be delicious and fun.

Cooking Class: Brioche Making – June 7th 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Valentine will teach you how to make Brioche. Once you have the basic dough mastered, she will teach you how to make a Basic Brioche Loaf, Braided Brioche, Brioche Cinnamon Rolls and Brioche BBQ Pork Buns. What I love best about their classes, you get to enjoy a class of wine while brushing up on your kitchen skills.   You can book your spot online through Eventbrite.

Preserve The Summer Bounty – June 11th 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

Valentine will demonstrate the basics of canning and will teach you how to make Strawberry Jam, Pickled Beets & Carrots, Preserved Lemons and Rhubarb Sauce. While the demonstration happens, you get to sip on a glass of wine and you get to go home with items made in class.  Again, registration is through Eventbrite.

Plan A Summer Party – Wednesday, June 21st 6:00 pm– 9:00 pm

This class will get you ready to host your next summer party. Recipes chosen are easy and perfect for a crowd.  Some of the items you will be learning to make include:

o    Gazpacho: Spanish cold tomato soup served with all the trimming; timeless and refreshing

o    Focaccia: Italian flatbread; top it with anything and add to the side of all your party tables

o    Beef Kofta Kebabs: Lebanese inspired dish pack with flavor! Served with Pitta bread and Tzatziki.

o    Season’s Fruits Pana Cotta:
