Still Moon Arts Society Call Out For Artists

16 May

The Still Moon Arts Society is looking artists for their 21st Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival this September.  The Festival has become a significant anchor of community creativity and collective neighbourhood identity. It has raised awareness of the history of the Still Creek watershed, resulting in ongoing community stewardship, and the return of salmon to the ravine.

This is an amazing community event that celebrates the full moon, Autumnal Equinox as well as Renfrew-Collingwood’s diverse community and natural environment through interdisciplinary arts events. This year’s theme is Water’s Wisdom. Still Moon is now recruiting artists, musicians and performers for the Harvest Fair and Streamside Lantern Installation.  The festival includes live music, ecological arts, shadow puppets, workshops and much more. So if you are a musician, dance group, stilt walker, clown, balloon artist, puppeteer, storyteller or any other performance artist, you are invited to apply to participate in the Moon Festival which takes place on September 23, 2023. To learn more about the event, or to complete an application, we invite you to visit Still Moon Arts Society.

17thAnnualRenfrewRavineMoonFestivalThe 17th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival happens Saturday, September 14, 2019.  This family friendly event celebrates the full moon, harvest abundance and diverse cultural traditions. The festival highlights the arts, community and the environment. It is always held on the Saturday closest to the 8th full moon of the year, the harvest moon.  The Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival started in 2003 under artistic director, Carmen Rosen and now continues every year as a co-production between the Still Moon Arts Society and Renfrew Park Community Association. If you have not attended this event previously, it is an amazing display of creativity, colour, light and music.  We encourage you to check it out.

The festivities begin in the afternoon with the Harvest Fair which kicks off at 4:00 pm and goes till 7:00 pm at Slocan Park. This event is a pre-cursor to the parade that happens at dusk.  During the Harvest Fair, there will be games, crafts, musicians, last minute lantern making, community competitions and more. As the moon rises and the sun sets, the Giant Moon Lantern along with dancers and musicians make their way to guide a twilight lantern parade through the Renfrew Ravine to Renfrew Park.  Once you arrive at Renfrew Park at about 7:30 pm, you descend into a transformed world of the stream, Still Creek. The entire area around the creek is lined with lights, floating lantern art and ethereal music. It is quite something to see.  Time slows seems to slow down as you walk through the paths and absorb the beauty of candlelight, exquisite lanterns and the shimmering stream. Once you pass through the walkway, you come upon Renfrew Park Field which is where you will find musicians playing on the main stage and a Tea Garden with food service. The evening finale features youth performers showcasing dance, stilting and fire spinning to live music. Then the big finale is a display of fireworks around 9:00 pm.

If you are looking to make a lantern, there is an interesting Arduino Lantern Workshop happening over 4 days using LED lighting.  There are some prerequisities for participating. To learn more, visit Still Moon Arts Society.

Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival September 30, 2017

26 Sep

RenfrewRavineMoonFestivalThe 15th annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival is scheduled for September 30th, 2017. If you haven’t attended this event, you are missing out. This is a great family event celebrating the environment around us with displays of colour, light and music.  This year’s theme is migrations.  Organizers, being the Still Moon Arts Society, would like those attending the event to reflect on the global movements that occur every day. It could be fish swimming across vast oceans, birds flying across Canada or that person travelling to meet friends or a loved on.  With the issues facing the world today, movement is playing a more significant role.

You are invited to come experience the installations created for this year’s event and discover your own stories in the theme of migration.  The festivities begin in the afternoon with the Harvest Fair which kicks off at 4:00 pm and goes till 6:45 pm at Slocan Park.  This event is a pre-cursor to the parade that happens at dusk.  The Harvest Fair features games, crafts, friendly competitions, musicians, community booths and more.  If you are interested in making a last minute lantern or purchasing one from a local artist before the parade, you can do so at the Harvest Fair.

At approximately 6:45 pm, as the moon rises and the sun sets, musicians and dancers will lead a twilight lantern parade from Slocan Park through the Renfrew Ravine to Renfrew Park.  Along the way, the procession will pass the river-stone labyrinth with candles laid throughout.  Many of those in the procession are carrying lanterns and as you walk along you will see many homes on the route getting into the act with displays of light and colour on their properties that abut the Renfrew Ravine.  Once at Renfrew Park, this is where some exquisite lanterns are on full display and candles set up throughout the ravine. It is quite a spectacle to see.  The event finishes at 8:30 pm in Renfrew Park with choreographed dance performances, stilting and fire spinning along with swing and jazz music. The grand finale includes fireworks.  This is a free all ages family friendly event.
