Halloween Events Happening In East Van For 2016

halloween-night2Lots of great events happening for Halloween this year in East Vancouver. We have set out a sampling of some of the events we’ve come across so far and will add to this list. Of course, if you are staying in this Halloween to hand out candy to the wee ones, Black Dog Video on Commercial Drive has you covered for Halloween movies. If you have an event, you’d like to see included on the list, feel free drop us a line at IliveInEastVan@gmail.com.

Parade of Lost Souls. This popular East Van tradition is back on Saturday, October 29th. The exact location will be announced at midnight on October 28th on the Dusty Flowerpot website. As in past years, you can expect a parade of wild costumes, giant puppets, live music by East Van’s own Carnival Band among others, a Thriller Flash Mob and performance art created by local community members. The Parade of Lost Souls will take place in East Vancouver on October 29th 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. This event is free and for all ages. Costumes are encouraged. For those wishing to carry on after the parade, there is an After Party at The Legion on Commercial Drive from 9:00 pm until 2:00 am. The after party will feature performances by Leland Riiivr, The Tailor, Tripzy Leary, Helixza and include dancers Shannon Renae, Marley Skye, Kosmic Kitty, Kin Leung and Lotus.  Tickets are available in advance through Brown Paper Tickets and are now SOLD OUT.

Fright Nights. Playland is hosting 7 haunted houses including a new Keepers Doll Factory, 15 rides and 2 live shows. Fright Nights is now nightly starting at 7:00 pm. until October 31st (enter E. Hastings & Windermere). Tickets are available online at FrightNights.ca and can be purchased for a specific night.

Rio Theatre. The Rio has you covered not only on Halloween Night, but days leading up to the big night starting with The Critical Hit Show Comedy Spooktacular on Wednesday, October 26th. On Thursday, October 27th, 28th and 29th  Geekenders hosted by Richard O’Brien hosts the Rocky Horror Show. Saturday’s show is followed by a personal favourite, the original Ghostbusters movie and a Halloween Party.  Sunday, October 30th, the Rio has a spooky good line up of movies with Blood Lions at 12:30 pm, followed by The Witches at 4:00 pm, then The Addams Family at 6:15 pm and finishing the day with Rosemary’s Baby at 8:30 pm. For Halloween, they are featuring Beetlejuice at 6:30 pm, followed by The Exorcist at 8:30 pm and finishing up the evening with, but of course, The Rocky Horror Picture Show Halloween Edition at 11:30 pm. Advance tickets are available online.

Morgue-A-Rita Madness – Sips Cocktail Emporium is hosting a Halloween bash on Friday, October 28th with Gravely & Sons.  Tickets are $20 per person which includes 2 complimentary drinks as well as a ballot in their costume contest.

The Zombie Hotel At The Waldorf. This is a multi room affair featuring DJs, dancing and much more.

80s Halloween  Party – Federico’s Supper Club is hosting an 80s Halloween Party on Saturday, October 29th. The evening includes a 3 course dinner with a live music show by Mark Olexson and The A-Deez which sets the night up for dancing.

Halloween Drive-In Movie – River District in SE Vancouver is hosting a number of Halloween movies on the weekends of October 21st/22nd and October 28th/29th. You can load up the car (up to 8 people) for $20 and watch Beetlejuice, Scream, Hotel Transylvania 2, Alien, Edward Scissorhands, The Blair Witch Project, Monsters Inc. and Halloween. Gates open at 5:30 pm each evening and snacks and food trucks will be on hand. For more information or to purchase your advance ticket, visit River District.

Halloween On The Drive – There will be lots of free family fun on Commercial Drive on Monday, October 31st. The day starts off with an offering of FREE Margherita Pizzetta’s at Famoso from 12:30 to 4:30 pm, but note you must be under 12 years of age. From 4:30 to 6:00 pm, there will be trick or treating at a number of merchants on the Drive from Venables to 13th Avenue. To see which merchants are participating, visit TheDrive.ca. From 6:00 to 7:30 pm in Grandview Park, the Commercial Drive Business Society is hosting free family fun including face painting, balloon twisting, caricatures and photo booths for those that want pics on their costume. The night will be topped off with fireworks from 7:30 to 8:00 pm in Grandview Park.

Dia De Los Muertos – 33 Acres Brewing is hosting an evening to celebrate the Day of the Dead on Friday, October 29th. You are invited to dress up, bring you dancing shoes and an appetite, there will be tacos. Oh and live music from 6:00 to 11:00 pm.

Rocky’s Halloween Party – Rocky Mountain Flatbread is hosting a Halloween Party for families on October 3oth from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at their Main Street location.  They are planning to have monster face pizza making for $8.50 per child, creepy crawly candy bar, face painting and a few other surprises. Costumes of course are encouraged!

COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR THE WEE ONES:

Trout Lake Community Centre: Halloween Celebration – Saturday, October 29th 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  You are invited to come jump in the bouncy castle, play Halloween games, and make some pumpkin crafts. Lots more surprises planned for the wee ones. There is a cost of $4.00 per child.

Britannia Community Centre: Halloween Howl – Saturday, October 29th (1–8 years). You are invited to a FREE spooky community event with entertainment and ghostly games and, of course, tricks and treats.  Event takes place in Gym D from Noon to 2:00 pm.

Britannia Community Centre: Family Pumpkin Carving – Sunday, October 30th.  Come carve a pumpkin for $6.00 which includes 2 pumpkins for a family of 4, additional pumpkins can be purchased for $3.00. Pumpkins must be carved at the centre and children under 12 must have a parent or caregiver present. Registration is required prior to October 22nd.

Sunset Community Centre: Haunted Halloween – Friday, October 28th  6:30 to 9:00 pm.  Come check out their spooky haunted houses, crafts and trick or treating. This is a free event for all ages.

Renfrew Park Community Centre: Halloween Party – Saturday, October 29th. You are invited to an afternoon of games, crafts, costumes, treats and a bouncy castle from Noon – 3 pm. Cost is $5 per child.

Rio Theatre. On Saturday, October 31st, the Rio Theatre has you covered for scary movies.  They are starting the night with Jack Nicholson in The Shining at 6:15 pm, then Halloween at 9:15 pm and ending with From Dusk Till Dawn at 11:30 pm.  Advance tickets are available online.

7 Deadly Sins At The Waldorf. 7 Deadly Sins is happening at The Waldorf.  This is a multi room affair featuring DJs, dancing and much more. The event gets underway at 8:00 pm and tickets are $35 and going quick.

Dogwood Brewing – Costume Kegger. The fine folks at Dogwood Brewing in SE Vancouver are throwing a Costume Kegger this Halloween. As the name depicts, costumes are encouraged.  Tickets are $30 and includes meal ticket for Disco Cheetah, beer tickets, a DJ, games and shuttle transportation to and from Cambie/Marine Skytrain Station.  The event kicks off at 8:00 pm and will go till 1:30 am.  Tickets are available online at Eventbrite.

Halloween Drive-In Movie Night. You are invited to check out a Halloween Drive-In movie series which will be held this weekend and next at River District in SE Vancouver.  Load up the car with your family and/or friends for the early movie which is family friendly at 7:00 pm on October 24th which is showing Hocus Pocus OR you can opt for the later scary movie for the adults at 9:00 pm which features The Thing.  On Friday, October 30th, they will be doing it all over again. On this Freaky Friday they will be showing The Nightmare Before Christmas at 7:00 pm and for the adult scary movie it will be The Lost Boys at 9:30 pm. The drive-in theatre is located at Boundary Road and East Kent Avenue North. Cost is $20 per car load plus taxes.  Free popcorn for the early movie and 4 food trucks and a snack bar will be on site. You can purchase tickets in advance online.

Halloween On The Drive – The Commercial Drive Business Society invites you and your family down for a FREE family event on Saturday, October 31st. From 12:30 to 4:30 pm, kids under the age of 12 can stop by Famoso Pizzeria on Commercial Drive for a free Margherita Pizzetta. From 4:30 to 6:30 pm, there will be ‘trick or treating’ along The Drive from Venables Street to 13th Avenue.  Participating merchants will have a “TREATS HERE” sign in their windows. Stop by the Southwest corner of Grandview Park between 6:00 and 7:30 pm for a chance to win a prize pack from local merchants.  And to top things off, there will be a fireworks finale at Grandview Park between 7:30 and 8:00 pm.

COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR THE WEE ONES:

Britannia Community Centre – The Ghost Caravan – Kids Theatre Show – Sunday, October 25th 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Local children are invited to come out and be a part of The Kids Theatre Show at the Parade of Lost Souls.  They ask that you imagine two ghostly figures riding two white bicycles.  Behind them, like a horse drawn carriage, there is a portable theatre from which costumed characters emerge which will be played by local children.  To learn more, stop by the Cafeteria at Britannia Community Centre and check out what’s happening.

Sunset Community Centre: Haunted Halloween – Friday, October 30th  6:30 to 9:00 pm.  Come check out their spooky haunted houses, crafts and trick or treating. This is a free event for all ages.

Sunset Community Centre: Halloween Skate – Thursday, October 29th 3:00 to 4:15 pm. Dress up in your Halloween costume and skate this spooktacular event. Regular admission and rental fees apply.

Parade of Lost Souls October 31st

ParadeofLostSoulsWe are pleased as punch that this much loved East Van tradition is continuing again this year. For those not familiar with this event, The Parade of Lost Souls is a community-driven event celebrating  Dia de Muertos (The Day of the Dead). The event includes a parade in East Van as well as performance art, live music, interactive art installations and YOU lost souls. The Day of the Dead is a time for celebration, for ceremony, for reflection and renewal. This parade is for YOU and by YOU, all the lost souls of the world. Bring your past and your present for a celebration of life and death. We may all be lost, but at least we can all be lost together.

This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, October 31st from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. The location will be revealed at midnight on October 30th on the Dusty Flowerpot website as well as the Dusty Flowerpot Facebook page. If you are interested in participating in this year’s Parade of Lost Souls, we invite you to check out all the great workshops taking place at the Britannia Community Center leading up to the event.  The Parade of Lost Souls was conceptualized and produced by the beloved Public Dreams Society for over 25 years. The parade now carries on under the direction of The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret. As the Parade of Lost Souls is a community driven event, it can only exist through donations from the community.  It costs over $20,000 to put on this parade each year, so we invite you to consider donating online to ensure this parade continues. Whether you participate in this event, or just come out and take in the spectacle, it really is something to see. Will we see you?

Following the Parade, for all of those souls that want to keep the party going, the Lost Souls After-Party will be taking place at The Hall (Astorino’s), 1739 Venables Street from 9:00 pm – 2:00 am. The party will feature performances by The Tailor, Sweet Anomaly, Orkestar Slivovica and Bone Rattle Burlesque. Early bird tickets are available online for $15 per person until October 25th.  From October 26th – 30th, tickets will be $20 per person. In Anticipation Of The Parade of Lost Souls Coming October 31st

DayoftheDeadDollsThe Parade of Lost Souls is coming on October 31st. This is a community-driven parade inspired by Dia de Muertos (The Day of the Dead). This is ultimately one of our favourite events in East Van. The parade has travelled around various parts of East Vancouver featuring performance art, interactive art installations and YOU lost souls. The Britannia Community Centre is a big part of the creative process for this event and is featuring some great workshops leading up to the big event.  We have set a few of the upcoming workshops below, but we invite you to check out Britannia Community Centre’s website which has a full listing of workshops leading up to the parade and how you can participate.  Whether you play an instrument and want to participate in the Carnival Band or make costumes/masks or be part of a Thriller Flashmob, there are lots of options to be part of the Parade of Lost Souls.

Thriller Flashmob – October 17, 20, 24 & 27

Back again by popular a Thriller Flashmob workshop will be hosted by Kat Single-Dain. You will learn the original choreography of Michael Jackson’s record breaking hit Thriller. You are asked to come to at least two of these rehearsals times set out below, but if you can make it to all of them, even better.  This workshop is by donation minimum $5-10 suggested.

The Ghost Caravan – Kids Theatre Show – October 18 & 25

You are invited to “imagine two ghostly figures riding two white bicycles. Behind them, like a horse drawn carriage is a magnificent portable theatre. Costumed characters emerge, played by local children and the lucky passersby are treated to short magical, musical stories and vignettes!”   On October 25th, Chris Ross, writer and director with Project Limelight, will lead a theatre workshop which will work towards a group performance at the Parade of Lost Souls.

Parade of Lost Souls – Carnival Band – October 19 & 26

You are invited to join the Carnival Band for one big night during the Parade of Lost Souls. You are asked to dust off that flute from Grade 9 or come and learn the tuba. Why not?  If you are musically inclined, come on out and practice with the Carnival Band and be part of the big night.   Drop in rehearsals will be happing on:

The Sounders Costume Making – October 22 & 29

Nayana Filekov will be hosting a costume & mask making and performance workshop on October 22nd and 29th. The Sounders are other worldly masked creatures that create beautiful music together. This workshop is equal parts visual art and sound.  This is a two part workshop in which participants will make wonderful take home masks made out of paper-mache. If you wish, you will also have the opportunity to participate in a group performance at this year’s Parade of Lost Souls.  There is a suggestion donation of $5-10 for this workshop and pre-registration is encouraged for this workshop. Contact the Britannia Community Centre directly to register.

Encore 80’s Night Halloween Party with Mark Olexson and the A-Deez at Federico’s Supper Club, 1728 Commercial Drive, on Friday, October 31st. Three course meal for $50 (includes dinner, show fee concert & dancing). Dinner from 6:30 pm, Performance 10:00 pm.  To make your reservation T:  604-251-3473.

Variety Show ‘Showcase From The Crypt’ at the Rio Theatre. You are invited to put on your costume for a spooktacular show at the Rio Theatre on Friday, October 31st at 8:00 pm.   The Cryptkeeper, along with his co-hosts The Vault Keeper and the Old Witch to name but a few, will keep things going through out the night. These ghoulish hosts will be holding costume contests and trivia games. Then The Fictionals take over to do some ghastly Improv. As well, you can expect some Burlesque from the fiery ginger Dezi Dezire. Also on deck are the burning fire dancing skills of Vesper Sephony. Last but not least, The Gentlemen Hecklers bring you a special tale that promises to make your sides split. Advance tickets are available for $12 and tickets at the door will be $15.  Note, this is a 19+ event with bar service

Halloween Night Tribute Terror at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street, with a long line up of music including The Ramores, The Dirty Magazines,  The Manglers, The Spasms and featuring members of The Jolts – SNFU – Go for Three – Cast of 1000s – Dirt – Death Sentence – Swank – The Hip Type – The Enigmas – The New Black – Nervous Talk – Insex – The Pasties – The Choir Practice – The Cadaver Dogs – Jackalope – Thrill Squad – The Cane Toads – The Ballentynes – The Excessives – Little Guitar Army.  Doors open at 8:00 pm, music at 9:00 pm SHARP! This is a 19+ event. Tickets are $15 and available at The Wise Hall & Lounge, Red Cat Records & Highlife Records .

Expect a parade of wild costumes, giant puppets, live music, a Thriller Flash Mob and performance art created by local community members. The Parade of Lost Souls will take place in East Vancouver on November 1st 7:00 – 10:00 pm. This event is free, all ages. Costumes are encouraged.

Fright Nights at Playland, 2901 E. Hastings St.  Seven haunted houses, 13 rides, a fire show, sideshow comedy and Monsters of Schlock. Fright Nights is now on until November 1st (enter E. Hastings & Windermere) tickets $29 – $63 and available at FrightNights.ca.

COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR THE WEE ONES:

Trick Or Treat in the East Village:  October 25th Sat. Noon – 3:00 pm.  Come dressed in your Halloween finest and trick or treat your way along the stretch from 2100 to 2800 East Hastings Street.

Britannia Community Centre: Family Pumpkin Carving – Sun, October 26th (1:00 – 3:00 pm). You are invited to come celebrate Halloween by carving a pumpkin with your family. Cost is based on a family of 4 and will include 2 pumpkins. Additional pumpkins can be purchased for $3 but must be done at the centre. Registration is requested.  Hot chocolate and carving utensils will be provided. All children under 12 years of age must have a parent or guardian present. Cost is $6.

Sunset Community Centre:  Haunted House & Carnival – October 24th  6:30 – 9:00 pm.  Haunted House, carnival games, trick or treating & concessions. This is a FREE event for all ages.

The Parade of Lost Souls Saturday November 1st

ParadeofLostSoulsWe are pleased to report that this much loved East Van event will carry on. The Parade of Lost Souls is a community-driven parade inspired by Dia de Muertos (The Day of the Dead). In recent years, the parade has travelled around various parts of East Vancouver featuring performance art, interactive art installations and YOU lost souls.

The Day of the Dead is a time for celebration, for ceremony, for reflection and renewal. You are invited to come out and wear a costume, bring and play an instrument, make a dance and/or join in on a dance. This parade is for YOU and by YOU, all the lost souls of the world. Bring your past and your present for a celebration of life and death. We may all be lost, but at least we can all be lost together.

This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, November 1st from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. The location will be revealed at midnight on Halloween on the Dusty Flowerpot Facebook page as well as the website dustyflowerpot.org. As in past year’s, there will be workshops hosted at the Britannia Community Center as well as at the Dusty Flowershop Studio. Calling All Souls! Parade of Lost Souls & Dance Party Saturday, October 26th

Many will be pleased to hear that this much loved East Van event will carry on.  The Public Dreams Society and The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret will be co-producing this year’s event. Kat Single Dain co-founder of The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret will be at the helm as the Artistic Producer.   The Parade of Lost Souls is a community-driven parade inspired by Dia de Muertos (The Day of the Dead). In recent years, the parade has travelled around various parts of East Vancouver featuring performance art, interactive art installations and YOU lost souls. This is a transitional year for the parade and as such, this will be a smaller and cozier event. The parade takes place from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. In keeping with tradition, the parade’s location will be announced at 12:00 a.m. midnight on October 26th on the Public Dreams website as well as Twitter and Facebook.

For those that wish to carry on after the parade, The Parade of Lost Souls Dance Party returns to The Hangar, 577 Great Northern Way. The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret has joined forces with The Work Less party to bring you an event that will “rock the house and wake the dead”. You can expect some mischief, dancing, performers, musical acts including CR Avery, The Tailor, Briden, Manhai, Matty For Life and maybe a few ghosts in the air. The dance party gets under way at 9:00 p.m. and goes till 3:00 a.m. Tickets are available online only starting from $20 with donation options of $5 and $10 to help support this volunteer driven event. Note: tickets will not be available at the door. Come out and celebrate life! 

UPDATE: Secret location has been announced. The location of the Parade of Lost Souls will be Brittania School Yard – Football Field, 1001 Cotton Drive.
