Workshop: Preserve The Summer August 7th At Trout Lake Community Centre

Jam-StarAniseHave some beautiful summer produce on hand, maybe some fresh herbs?  Always wanted to learn how to can your summer bounty? Valentine of Tartine & Maple  will be back at Trout Lake Community Centre August 7th  to lead a workshop on the basics of canning.  Valentine will teach you some simple recipes including Blueberry & Lemon Jam, Zucchini Pickles and a Basil Walnut Pesto.  Not only is homemade/handmade the best, once you’ve learned the basics, you can put your own personal twist on each jar you make.  Just think local blackberries are just around the corner.  The 2 hour workshop kicks off at 6:00 pm. Cost is $57.14. At the end of the evening, everyone goes home with a small jar of the recipes made during the workshop. To register, visit Vancouver.ca.

Trout Lake Outdoor Summer Concert Series Returns July 3rd

TheSodaCrackersThe Trout Lake Outdoor Summer Concert Series is back for another year starting Wednesday, July 3, 2019.  If you have not checked out this great free summer event, you are missing out on the perfect summer evening.  This annual event is hosted by the Trout Lake Community Center at 3360 Victoria Drive.  Concerts happen every Wednesday evening throughout the summer rain or shine. If it rains, concerts go indoors to the Grandview Room. We’ve had the opportunity to take in some of the concerts on a nice summer evening and we have to say, it is a pretty perfect way to spend an evening. Bring a blanket, your friends, family, kids or the dog or all of the above and a picnic and you are set.  If you aren’t able to organize a picnic, you can grab some food at the Carousel Café.  We have set out the musical line up for this summer below.  Each evening kicks off at 6:30 pm.  By the way, dancing is encouraged.

For those that love the lantern processions around Trout Lake, take note. On thLostSoulsSouthHilltin-can lanterns hanginge very last concert of the summer, August 28th, there will be an opportunity to make lanterns from 6:00 pm to 8:15 pm  after which there will be a lantern procession along with performers and musicians around Trout Lake at dusk (8:30 pm).  Keep an eye out for the Lantern Tent to make yours that evening, or bring your own creation from home.

Learn To Grow Your Own Veggies This Summer at Trout Lake Community Centre June 15th

Would you like to grown your own veggies this season? Or maybe you’d prefer some fresh greens and herbs.  Whatever you wish to grow, there’s a great Early Summer Gardening Workshop happening Saturday, June 15th at Trout Lake Community Centre.  Rhiannon Johnson of Village Vancouver will be leading this 2 hour workshop in which she will show you how to plant veggies whether it’s your apartment balcony, your backyard or a community garden plot.  She will teach you how to plant, grow and harvest peas, beans, beets, greens, root veggies, herbs, tomatoes, carrots and veggies from the onion family.  All things you can start growing right away. The workshop runs from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and costs $19.05. Learn To Make A Provencal Vegetarian Dinner at Trout Lake Community Centre March 6th

Looking to cook something new, healthy and easy for dinner? How about a Provencal Vegetarian Dinner?  Valentine of Tartine & Maple will be leading a delish cooking demonstration on Wednesday, March 6th at Trout Lake Community Centre.  She will introduce you to some food and recipes from southern Europe. During the class, Valentine will demonstrate how to make homemade Olive Tapenade Crostinis, Provence Vegetable Tian and Almond Panna Cotta. You are requested to bring a container with you so you can take leftovers home with you.  The cost is $57.14 and made through City of Vancouver. For more information, visit Tartine & Maple.

East Van Artist and Crow Whisperer, June Hunter is hosting a Valentine’s Studio Sale this weekend. If you are looking for something for your Valentine, or maybe a birthday gift, June will have an array of beautiful items perfect for gift giving. June’s studio is located in the Hastings Sunrise area at 2785 Parker Street (one block west of Renfrew – between Hastings St. and First Avenue). The Studio Sale happens Saturday & Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Free Family Concert w/ Will’s Jams – Firehall No. 1 – February 10th

There will be a free family concert at the Firehall No. 1 in Strathcona with music by Will’s Jams at 2:00 pm.  Donations will be collected for the Fire Fighters Burn Fund.

Valentine’s Party/Dance – Alpen Club – February 10th    

If you love ballroom dancing and want to kick off Valentine’s a little early, you may wish to check out the Valentine’s Dance Party at The Alpen Club (Victoria & 33rd Avenue) this Sunday night. Admission is $12 and includes 1 hour group lesson, dance party to follow. Doors open at 6:30 pm and goes till 11:00 pm.

Looking for more live music, did you know The Heatley in Strathcona regularly features live music?  Every Sunday they offer bluegrass music with brunch 11 am – 3 pm.

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3-7 pm, no cover.

Looking to shop local? Be sure to check out one of the farmer markets happening this weekend. Saturday is Riley Park Farmers Market 10 am – 2 pm. The lovely Valentine Kitamura of Tartine Maple will be leading a hands-on workshop on Wednesday, January 23rd.   Valentine will take you through the 3 stages of dough making in this 3 hour evening class filled with tips for success.  Cost is $66.67 and registration is available online.  Visit Tartine Maple for more information and to register.

You are invited to stop by and chat with those running for Parks Board who represent you, your wishes and concerns.  Have your say as to what’s important to you in your community.
