Tremors 2018 – Italian Cultural Centre – August 16th – 25th 

Young emerging artists perform 3 contemporary Canadian plays at the Italian Cultural Centre. They include Selfie by Christine Quintana, Tiny Replicas by Dave Deveau, and Theory by Norman Yeung. The performances are Pay What You Decide. For more information on times and tickets, visit Tremors 2018.

Family Night – Grandview Park – August 17th 

Commercial Drive BIA, Whitecaps FC and Fortis BC are hosting a free movie and family activities in Grandview Park Friday night. The movie is Peter The Rabbit.  There will also be a Kids Zone, balloon twisting and more. Event gets underway at 8:00 pm.

Italian Market – Italian Cultural Centre – August 17th 

The outdoor Italian Market is back Friday, August 17th in the parking lot in front of the Italian Cultural Centre from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. This market has a distinctly Italian taste to them which includes the food and the music

Pizza Making Workshops – Beaconsfield Park – August 17th 

Running along side this Italian Market this Friday, will be Pizza Making Workshops in Beaconsfield Park located directly behind the Italian Cultural Centre.  You will have the opportunity to stretch and cook your own pizza with pizza master.  This is a hands-on event that is suitable for all ages.  Two basic pizzas are being offered, but you are invited to bring or buy extra toppings from the market to make the pizza distinctly yours.  Cost of the Pizza Making Workshop is $13 online or $15 at the event.  There will be 4 pizza workshops starting at 5:00 pm. They will continue at 5:45 pm, 6:30 pm and 7:15 pm. To reserve your spot, visit the Italian Cultural Centre online.

Friday Night Live – Hastings Racecourse – August 17th 

If you want to check out the horse races this summer, last opportunity to catch Friday Night Live Racing at Hastings Racecourse. Admission is free, races start at 7:00 pm.

PNE – Playland – August 18th – September 3rd

The Fair at the PNE opens this Saturday, August 18th.  As always, they have lots of great entertainment lined up throughout the Fair as well some great eats. This year, you can also find the Lost World of Dragons, Action Sports World Tour, Knights of Valour and of course the forever favourites, The Super Dogs.  The fun gets under way at 11:00 am Saturday and goes till late.

Mobile Market – August 18th 

Looking for fresh BC corn and other summer veggies? Fresh Roots Urban Farm is hosting a Mobile Market this Saturday at 3 locations. First up, Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, After that Kensington Community Centre from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, followed by a pop up market at Brant Villa from 3:00 – 4:00 pm.

Artful Sunday – Napier Greenway – August 19th

Artful Sundays kicks off this Sunday in the Napier Greenway by the Britannia Community Centre. This outdoor visual art market features local artists, workshops, artist demonstrations, live music and more. Stop by between Noon – 5:00 pm.

The Good, The Bad The Ugly – Rio Theatre – August 19th

If the heats getting you and you want to sit back in air conditioning with a nice cold beverage, you may wish to check out the classic Clint Eastwood movie The Good, The Bad & The Ugly playing at the Rio Theatre Sunday night at 9:00 pm.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

Looking to take in some comedy, East Van Improv League is at Havana Theatre Sunday night at 7:30 pm and Graham Clark’s Laugh Gallery is Monday night at Havana Theatre 9 pm. If you are looking to keep the kids entertained, big or small, Playland is now open daily from 10 am – 7 pm. This There – The Cultch July 27th & 28th

A production asking the big question ‘what does it mean to live’? The meaning will vary from one person to the next, but this show delves into the lives of Alison and Maddie who are at crossroads in life and rethinking their chosen demanding professions. Fraser River Walk – Dogwood Brewing – July 27th

You are invited to join the Sunset Artists in Communities Project ‘wayfinding/wandering’ for an evening walk to explore the Fraser River along the southern border.  Meeting spot is Dogwood Brewing at 7:00 pm. You are, of course, welcome to stop by early for a pre-walk pint from 6:00 pm onwards.

Adult Nights – Playland – July 27th

The last evening for Playland Nights happens this Friday for the 19+ crowd.  There will be beverages, alcoholic and non, midway games, rides, DJs spinning tunes with a definite party theme. There is also a burlesque show and the opportunity to test your lumber Jack/Jill skills with axe-throwing which we understand there’s an extra charge to participate in.  Tickets are $31 in advance or $34 at the gate.

Fundraiser: Families Together! – Wise Hall – July 29th

This Sunday, a group of local musicians including Professor Banjo, Ginalina Music and Curtis Clear Sky & The Constellationz will be hosting a fundraiser Families Together! The event is to help raise funds to support aid organizations helping family reunification at the US/Mexico border.   This issue is far away in distance, but not in the hearts and minds of many.  The event is a family oriented event, so along side the music, there will be a family craft centre hosted by The Learnary. Doors open at 1:30 pm and musical performances happen between 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Suggested donation is $10 – $50, but no one turned away for lack of funds.

Breakfast & Blooms – Olive & Wild – July 29th

Il Fioraio Florist invites you to a floral workshop this Sunday at a great space on Main Street, Olive & Wild.  In this workshop you learn some basics of flower arranging along with some great tips.  Mimosa and light breakfast included.  You will leave with a beautiful centerpiece and the opportunity to shop at Olive & Wild after the workshop at a discount.  Cost of the workshop is $69. Textile Sale – Our Social Fabric – July 29th

Our Social Fabric is hosting another textile sale and they are over loaded with zippers, so will be giving some away for free.  If you need sewing supplies, DO check this spot out. They take new fabrics no longer needed to keep them from heading to the landfill. Prices are very reasonable. Sale happens this Sunday, July 29th from 10 am – 1 pm. at 1275 Venables Street at Clark in the Russell/Hendrix Building, 2nd floor, Unit #270.

If you are a night owl, The Rio Theatre is showing a classic movie, Invasion of The Body Snatchers at 11:30 pm Friday night.   If you love the cats and burlesque, there’s a burlesque inspired FUNdraiser happening at The Rio Theatre Saturday night. International Blues Music Day At The Rio Theatre August 4th

If you love blues music, The Rio Theatre is the place to be on Saturday, August 4th. Vancouver Blues Around Town is presenting The Wailin’ Walker Band and David “Boxcar” Gates to celebrate International Blues Music Day.  For a bit of background on the talent performing, first up is Al ‘Wailin’ Walker. Al was born and raised in Vancouver and is known for his infectious style of rhythm and blues.  He has been performing electric guitar solos with commanding locals for over 4 decades.  Al has shared the stage with Johnny Winter, George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughan to name just a few. David ‘Boxcar’ Gates also hails from Vancouver and has evolved into one of Canada’s most renowned acoustic guitar players. He was been wowing audiences for over 30 years.   This is a 19+ event. Vancouver’s Greek Summerfest – Boundary & 29th Ave – July 5-15

Great food, live entertainment and dancing for 11 days at this summer festival. The Greek Summerfest is back at Boundary and 29th Avenue. Jim Byrnes and Gotta Be George Michael will be two of the performers over the course of the festival. This is an all ages event and admission is free. For more information, visit Greek Summerfest.

Plant Club With Wine – Figaro’s Garden – July 6th

The first Friday of the month, Figaro’s Garden Centre on Victoria Drive is hosting Plant Club. Stop by for a glass of wine and as they say ‘geek out on plants together’. To chat about all things plants, get some tips, stop by between 3:30 – 5:30 pm this Friday.

Les amis du fromage is hosting another Bakery Pop Up Shop this Saturday, July 7th. Ritchie’s Bakery will be on site at their East Van location at 843 East Hastings Street from Noon – 5:00 pm this Saturday or until they sell out. Ritchie’s Bakery specializes in artisanal breads and pastries.

Compost Workshop – Riley Park Community Garden – July 7th

You are invited to stop by and learn about composting by Master Composter Angela Hoy this Saturday at Riley Park Community Garden.  They will be building new compost bins for the season.  Workshop happens from 1:00 – 2:00 pm in Riley Park Community Garden at 30th & Ontario Street.

Sweet Peanut Sample Sale – Little Mountain Shop – July 7th & 8th

Mini Car Free Day – Commercial Street Village – July 8th

The local businesses that comprise the 3400 – 3500 block Commercial Street are hosting a Mini Car Free Day this Sunday from Noon to 4:30 pm. There will be chainsaw carving,  live music, kids t-shirt giveaway, giant Genga game, street art, rummage sale, chocolate tasting, bike repair as well as an electric bike demo and a whole lot more.

Car Free Day – Commercial Drive – July 8th

Vancouver’s original Car Free Day kicks off at Noon this Sunday and will run for 15 blocks along Commercial Drive.  There will be live entertainment, local artisans and  activities for all ages and of course great food.  If you are travelling by bike and wish to store it while you wander, BEST Bike Valet will be on hand. Event runs till 7:00 pm.

Pre-Launch Narcoleap – Rio Theatre – July 9th

You are invited to an exclusive pre-launch screening of NarcoLeap at the Rio Theatre Monday, July 9th.  They will be screening all 8 episodes of this Sci-Fi Thriller Web Series. Doors open at 6:00 pm as does the bar. Screening gets under way at 7:00 pm. It’s free, but of course the bar Is not.  Q & A follows the screening.

Street Photography Exhibit – Meet Me At The Lamp(p)ost  Until July 10th

Massy Books located at 229 East Georgia Street in Chinatown has a sweet gallery upstairs. It’s currently hosting two self-taught lens based artists. They are Irish-born, Canadian residents Laura Noonan and Tara Mary Paget, through place-specific street photography, Meet me at the Lamp(p)ost. The exhibit promotes contentment in self and place. Laura and Tara founded Meet me at the Lamp(p)ost in 2016. You can view their exhibit until July 10, 2018 during regular hours, being 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Wednesday and 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Thursday to Sunday.

FIFA – The World Cup

FIFA World Cup Soccer continues with a few big games this weekend. Saturday June 30th, France vs. Argentina starts at 10 a.m. followed by Uruguay vs. Portugal at 2 p.m.  Sunday, July 1st kicks off with Spain vs. Russia at 10 a.m. followed by Croatia vs. Denmark at 2 p.m.  Monday, July 2nd Brazil vs. Mexico kick off at 10 a.m. followed by Belgium vs. Japan at 2 p.m. Lots of spots in East Van which we expect will be featuring the games we expect including many of the local breweries as well The Libra Room, Portuguese Club, Boteco Brasil on Nanaimo Street, Joe’s Café, The Vancouver Alpen Club and St. Augustine’s to name a few.

Movies In The Park – McLean Park – June 29th

The Summer Movie Nights are back which are hosted by the Collingwood Community Policing Centre. You are invited to bring your blankets, lawn chairs and snacks to McLean Park.  This is a free event and everyone is invited to attend. Everyone is invited! Movie kicks off at dusk with popcorn of course.  Note, we do expect if it rains, the event will be postponed to a future date.

Canada Day Celebration – Grandview Park – July 1st

You are invited to a Canada Day celebration at Grandview Park this Sunday, July 1st. There will be a host of family friendly activities from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm including live music by the Kara Kata Afrobeat Band, The Drive Street Band & The Carnival Band as well as salsa dancing, Kung Fu demonstration Kick Stand offering bike tune ups.

Canada Day Celebration – Hastings Park – July 1st

You are invited down to Hastings Park, 3096 East Hastings Street for a host of family friendly activities including arts and crafts, carnival games, balloon twisting, face painting, live performances and of course cake.  Fun happens between 11:00 am – 2 pm.

Sunset Community Association will be hosting a Canada Day Celebration at Sunset Park at Main and 53rd Avenue from Noon to 4:00 pm. There will be free carnival rides, BBQ and live entertainment.   

Grease Sing-A-Long – Rio Theatre June 29th & June 30th

You’ve got the chills and they’re multiplying. Do you know the words? If so, head down to the Rio Theatre for a 40th anniversary Sing-A-Long to the movie Grease. The original of course. Singing encouraged so is dressing up.  Fun happens at 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday night.

Vancouver International Jazz Festival – Until July 1st

Yeast Van’s Hop Circuit – Eat Van Craft Breweries – April 22nd 

Love tasting beer and meeting other beer loves? You may wish to check out Yeast Van’s Hop Circuit happening this Sunday, April 22nd from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  East Van craft breweries and distilleries are hosting an open house.  Stop by and sample beer, get a tour of what happens behind the scenes. Food trucks will be dotted throughout East Vancouver at the various breweries/distilleries.   Our friends at Vancouver Brewery Tour have aptly called it the “Super Bowl of craft beer events”.  Expect line ups, especially if the weather is good.  

Make It! Vancouver – PNE Forum – April 20 to 22, 2018

Make It! Vancouver is at the PNE Forum this weekend with 180 makers.  The show will feature a host of items including accessories, home décor, delectable items to eat and drink, art, jewellery, leather goods, baby clothes and toys, accessories for your dogs. There will be food trucks and a beer garden to help sustain you while you wander and shop. Make It! Vancouver kicks off Friday, April 20th at 11:00 and goes till 9:00 pm that day and continues Saturday (10-6) and Sunday (11-5). Earth Day Parade & Festival – The Drive/Grandview Park – April 21st

8th Annual Earth Day Parade & Festival take place this Saturday, April 21st.  Parade starts at 1:00 pm at Commercial & Broadway and makes its way to Grandview Park.  The festival begins in Grandview Park at 1:45 pm and goes till 3:00 pm. Lots of family friendly activities.

Park Earth Day Celebration – Everett Crowley – April 21st

Volunteers are back at Everett Crowley Park this Saturday, April 21st planting trees, native shrubs and pollinating insects. Organizers have partnered with the Vancouver Park Board and Wildcoast Ecological Society and will be leading a salmon berry planting along the banks of Kinross Creek. The Environmental Youth Alliance will be giving away native plants. There will be interpretative walks along with fresh refreshments.   This is an all ages family event and happens from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

2nd Annual Earth Day Fundraiser & Student Art Show – Bandidas Taqueria – April 22nd

This Sunday, April 22nd, Bandidas Taqueria will be hosting a community fundraiser, student art show and sidewalk festival in support of RAVEN Trust’s Heiltsuk campaign.  This is an all day affair that starts at 9:00 am and goes till midnight.   Bandidas Taqueria will be featuring regular brunch inside as well as a sidewalk festival outside.   They have partnered with Victory Gardens who will be on hand with seeds and seedlings for sale, Earnest Ice Cream’s truck will be parked out front will ALL proceeds going to RAVEN Trust.  100% of the profits from the sale of food and drink on April 22nd will be donated to RAVEN Trust.

Documentary ‘Directly Affected’ – Rio Theatre – April 22nd

A compelling new documentary DIRECTLY AFFECTED, takes an in-depth look at the issues surrounding the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Zack will also be in attendance and will participate in a post-screening Q&A, as will some other special guests.  Movie kicks off at 4:15 pm.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

In case you hadn’t heard, Havana Restaurant is back up and running which also means the theatre in the back is as well which means late night comedy and much more. To see what’s on, check out Havana Events.  Love words and language, Verses Festival of Words is on now at various venues until April 29th. The Winter Farmer Markets continue this weekend with Saturday’s market at Nat Bailey Stadium being the last of the season. Earth Day Events In East Vancouver April 21 & 22, 2018

EarthDay2018It’s Earth Day this weekend and we should celebrate this lovely planet we call home and do everything we can for it. We’ve set out below a number of events celebrating Earth Day:

Commercial Drive – Earth Day Parade & Festival, Saturday, April 21st 

The 8th Annual Earth Day Parade & Festival takes place this Saturday, April 21st in East Vancouver. You are invited to come out to this family-friendly event. This year’s parade kicks off at 1:00 pm from Commercial and Broadway and continues to Grandview Park where the festival portion will continue from 1:45 pm to 3:00 pm. There will be a host of activities for all ages.  For those that get hungry, there will be a few food trucks on hand, with of course some great coffee shops and other eateries close by on The Drive.

Everett Crowley Park Earth Day Celebration – April 21st

Volunteers are back at Everett Crowley Park this Saturday, April 21st planting trees, native shrubs and pollinating insects. Organizers have partnered with the Vancouver Park Board and Wildcoast Ecological Society and will be leading a salmon berry planting along the banks of Kinross Creek. The Environmental Youth Alliance will be giving away native plants. There will be interpretative walks along with fresh refreshments. The Vancouver Public Library will also be on hand with books on natural history.   This is an all ages family event and happens from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

A representative from RAVEN Trust will be on hand to answer questions. Local musicians will be on hand throughout the day to provide entertainment outdoors.   If that isn’t action packed enough, six classrooms from four East Van schools will be showcasing environmental-themed art pieces on their walls over the course of the weekend. Stop by and support this great initiative.  100% of the profits from the sale of food and drink on April 22nd will be donated to RAVEN Trust, an organization which helps indigenous communities fight for environmental protection by offsetting their legal costs. Movie ‘Directly Affected’ Earth Day Screening – Rio Theatre April 22nd

Zack Embree’s, Director, of the compelling new documentary DIRECTLY AFFECTED, takes an in-depth look at the issues surrounding the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Zack will also be in attendance and will participate in a post-screening Q&A, as will some other special guests.  Five years ago Zack Embree set out on a mission to understand the impacts of the Kinder Morgan pipeline on local communities and give a voice back to those who had been ignored by the National Energy Board process.

Rio Theatre – Old School #SaveTheRio Fundraisers – March 30th and 31st 

If you are a fan of the Rio Theatre and wish to support a great spot for independent theatre, musicians and performers, check out the telethon like fundraising events happening this weekend. First up, is An Evening With Kevin Smith. There are 2 shows 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm on Friday, March 30th. Advance tickets are sold out, but there will be some tickets at the door. Golden Egg Hunt – River District – April 1st

River District in SE Vancouver is hosting a golden egg hunt Sunday, April 1st from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. There will be chocolate egg hunts, balloons, cotton candy, crafts, face painting and a chocolate bunny draw.  Starbucks will be on hand serving hot chocolate and coffee. Romer’s Burgers providing frozen yogurt and mini doughnuts. This is a free event, but registration is requested.

Easter Eggstravaganza Swim – Britannia Pool – April 1st 

Britannia Pool at Britannia Community Centre is hosting a free family swim this Sunday, April 1st from 2:30 – 5:00 pm. They will also have some Easter treats on hand and games for everyone to play.

Holiday Free Skate – Britannia  Ice Rink – April 2nd

If you are looking to ice skate, Britannia Ice Rink is hosting a free family skate this Monday, April 2nd from 1:00 to 3:30 pm.

Chelsea Hotel: Songs Of Leonard Cohen – Firehall Arts Centre – April 21st

Haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a writer checks into New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song. Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not only forget, but erase from memory. This is the premise of the Chelsa Hotel which pays tribute to the songs of Leonard Cohen. This production on its final run continues this weekend. Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

If you are looking for some live music this weekend, the Kin Balam Quartet is at Café Deux Soleils Saturday night at 8:00 pm.
