What’s On East Van: September 21st Edition

Our weekly feature What’s On East Van sets out some cool events for the upcoming week. Beyond the week, we invite you to check out our Event Listing which is updated daily and features events for the month and beyond. It will be wet this weekend, or so we expect, so run down lots of indoor activities.

June Hunter Studio Sale – 2785 Parker Street – Sept. 21^st & 22^nd

East Van artist, June Hunter, is hosting a Studio Sale this Friday and Saturday from her studio space in Hastings Sunrise. She has many new designs including scarves, totes, cushion covers and as always will have some natured inspired jewellery and prints. This is a laid back shopping experience in which you walk through her idyllic back yard to get to her studio. We expect goodies to nibble on as well wine and/or sangria. Studio Sale happens Friday 2:00 to 7:00 pm and Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Make It! 10 Year Anniversary Market – Croatian Cultural Centre – Sept. 21^st & 22^nd

Have a birthday to shop for? Maybe you are looking to get a jump on Christmas. Sorry, we just know those early birds are out there. This Friday and Saturday, is a great opportunity to support your local economy and stop by Make It! 10 Year Anniversary Market at the Croatian Cultural Centre. Event happens Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is $3.00 and can be purchased in advance through Eventbrite or at the door.

Eastside Flea Opening New Location – Sept. 21^st to 23^rd

The Eastside Flea home to many local artists and vendors of vintage and collectibles has moved to a new bigger location at 550 Malkin Avenue. It’s opening weekend for them this weekend. Friday they are kicking things off 7:00 pm till late. Saturday and Sunday the fun continue with live vinyl deejays and drink specials between 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. The Eastside Flea runs 11:00 am – 5:00 pm on both Saturday & Sunday.

Free Drive-In Movie – River District – September 22nd

River District is hosting free drive-in movies this Saturday, September 22nd. The double feature this weekend will feature Ant Man & The Wasp at 7:15 pm and Solo: A Star Wars Movie at 9:30 pm. Gates open at 6:30 pm.

Ice Cream Social – Beta 5 Chocolates – September 22nd & 23rd

Beta 5 Chocolates is hosting a delish Ice Cream Social this weekend. Fruit Loop profiteroles with fruit loop cereal, milk ice cream and fior de latte ice cream, drizzled with peach coulis. Hello! Need we say more.

Veg Fest 2018 – 102 East 4th Avenue – September 23rd

Two dozen of BC’s plant based vendors will be participating in Veg Fest 2018 at 102 East 4^th Avenue located just West of Main Street this Sunday. The market style food fest happens from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. These are a wide variety vendors including Dipped Doughnut Co., plant based cheese from Blue Heron, Chickpea, Kula Kitchen and more. Fall Equinox Coffee House – Britannia Community Centre – Sept. 23rd

You are invited for an evening of live music, poetry, coffee and great company. Everyone is welcome. Event happens 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

If you are looking for something a bit racey this weekend, Dave Savage is hosting The Hump Film Festival at the Rio Theatre all weekend. If it’s live music you are after, we hear the Libra Room has a regular line up of music. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. If you prefer to get out the rain Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3-7 pm, no cover.

Free Family Night – Grandview Park – August 10^th

This Friday, there will be free family friendly square dance at Grandview Park. No experience required, lessons on the spot to live music. All ages welcome. Fun happens 5:00 to 8:00 pm in Grandview Park.

Friday Night Live – Hastings Racecourse – August 10th

If you want to check out the horse races this summer, you can this Friday night at Hastings Racecourse as well as their casino. Admission is free, races start at 7:00 pm.

Sound Of Music Sing-A-Long – Rio Theatre – August 10th

A few of the folks from Geekenders are hosting a sing-a-long to the Sound of Music tonight at the Rio Theatre. The audience will be lead through a vocal warm up and be given a comprehensive guide to the accompanying actions and use of the interactive funpack/prop bags. Costumes are encouraged. All ages are welcome. Tickets are $18 in advance or $22 at the door.

Summer Savour Festival – River District – August 11^th

The folks at River District are hosting another free outdoor event this Saturday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This is a family friendly event with the Paw Patrol on hand along with balloon animals, face and mural painting, Starbucks will also be on hand with iced coffee samples. Vancouver Mural Festival – Celebration Concert – August 11th

As part of the Vancouver Mural Festival, a concert and a host of other family friendly activities happen in Jonathon Rogers Park this Saturday. Event kicks off at Noon until 9:30 pm. The concert line up includes A Tribe Called Red and Charlotte Day Wilson. Tickets are priced at $30, $25 and children under 12 years of age are free when attending with an adult that has purchased a ticket.

Ice Cream Social – Beta 5 Chocolates – August 11th & 12th

Beta 5 Chocolates invites you to “Come As You Are” this weekend. This weekend’s grunge inspired sundae features chocolate cookies n’ cream, peanut butter ice cream, chocolate sour cream doughnut, peanut brittle and a chocolate smiley face graffiti shard, hot fudge and whipped cream. Stop by their shop 413 Industrial Avenue between 1:00 – 5:00 pm this Saturday and Sunday.

Summer Pie Workshop – The Pie Shoppe – August 12th

Artful Sunday – Napier Greenway – August 12^th

Ilhan Saferali Quartet – Café Deux Soleils – August 12th

This Sunday, young jazz musician Ihan Saferali will be performing at Café Deux Soleils. He plays trumpet and piano and is already starting to establish a name for himself. To catch this young star in the making, stop by Café Deux Soleils Sunday night 8:00 – 11:00 pm.

What’s On East Van: August 3rd Edition

Plant Club – Figaro’s Garden Centre – August 3^rd

Love plants, want to trade notes with others who love plants and want to learn more or share some tips. Figaro’s Garden Centre is hosting an informal Plant Club With Wine the first Friday of the month. Stop by between 3:30 and 5:30 pm to chat on all things growing.

Serate in Piazza – Italian Cultural Centre – August 3^rd

Every Friday evening in July and August, the Italian Cultural Centre hosts free live outdoor music in the piazza. Event happens from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. You are welcome to stop by and enjoy the music, it’s free. If you get hungry, there’s pasta, sausages, gelato and lots of refreshments available to purchase. Should it rain, the event moves indoors.

ABRA Cadabra – Federico’s Supper Club – August 3^rd

Federico’s Supper Club has a special night of ABBA music lined up this Friday with the tribute band, ABRA Cadabra. Bakery Pop Up – les amis du fromage – August 4^th

Les amis du fromage’s East Van location at 843 East Hastings Street is hosting another Bakery Pop Up this Saturday, August 4^th. Guest Baker will be Lauren Ritchie with delish fresh loaves of bread from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm or until they sell out.

International Blues Music Day – Rio Theatre – August 4^th

If you love blues music, Rio Theatre is the place to be Saturday night. The Wallin’ Walker Band and David ‘Boxcar’ Gates will be performing. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Advance tickets available at Rio Theatre.

This weekend Beta 5 Chocolates invites you down for a Journey. 42^nd Annual Powell Street Festival – Oppenheimer Park – August 4^th & 5^th

The Powell Street Festival Canada’s largest celebration of Japanese arts and culture happens Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 pm in and around Oppenheimer Park. Lots of things to see and do for all ages.

Vancouver Mural Festival – Various Locations – August 6^th

Take in the opportunity to see some amazing large scale public murals this holiday Monday. Vancouver Mural Festival has a great map setting out the locations of the murals. Best part, it’s free to wander and check out all art. Lots of great coffee shop, ice cream spots and breweries in the area should you need to refresh along your route.

Spent Grain Dinner – The Pie Shoppe – August 6^th

This long weekend Monday, the ladies from The Pie Shoppe are collaborating with Chef David Jackman to host a Spent Grain Dinner. The menu includes Barley, Wheat, Rye and Malt from neighbour brewers and distillers in the East Van community. There will also be a short presentation on Spent Grain and Wasted Food led by one of the brew masters. There are 2 seatings for this dinner Monday, first up 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, then 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm. Tickets are $75.00 and available online from The Pie Shoppe.

What’s On East Van: June 15th Edition

FIFA – The World Cup

FIFA World Cup Soccer is underway as of June 14^th which means many local spots will be featuring games. Some of those include The Libra Room featuring games after 10:30 a.m. Portuguese Club will open early for all Portugal matches, but note members get first dibs on seats/space. The Vancouver Alpen Club will be open 30 minutes before kick off and beer flows early at 9:00 am. There is a $5 cover charge at The Alpen Club. We hear ChiCha Restaurant at Broadway & Main will be featuring Iran vs. Morocco and Spain vs. Portugal on Friday ,June 15th.

Parallel 49 Beer Garden – June 16th

Parallel 49 Brewing Co. will be hosting a beer garden this Saturday, June 16th from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. There will be lots of great beer for $5 along with delish food and music. This is always a popular fun spot on the weekends. Sun is in the forecast!

Fredi Rahn Studio Sale – June 16th & 17th

Local East Van potter, Fredi Rahn, is hosting a Studio Sale this weekend. Stop by her studio which is located in the Hasting Sunrise area and more specifically at 2704 Yale Road. Fredi Rahn is a well known potter in East Van who participates in the Eastside Culture Crawl. This weekend you can expect to find some samples and orphans on sale looking for a good home. We hear there will be also be a free gift from the demo shelf with every purchase (while quantities last of course). Stop by this weekend between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm to check out some beautiful pottery.

East Van GoGos Spring Brunch – Trout Lake Community Centre – June 17^th

You are invited to a Spring Brunch this Sunday, June 17^th in the Grandview Room at Trout Lake Community Centre. This event is a fundraiser for the East Van Gogos (meaning grandmothers) which do some amazing work in our community. Come enjoy a buffet style brunch along with live music. Car Free Day – Main Street – June 17^th

Car Free Day on Main Street happens this Sunday, June 17^th from Noon to 7:00 pm. Another great street festival spanning 21 blocks from Broadway to 30^th Avenue along Main Street. Car Free Day features 15 stages and lots of mini festivals up and down this stretch of Main Street. This is a family friendly event with kid-zones, food vendors, live music and lots of entertainment.

East Van Garden Tour – June 17th

The East Van Garden Tour happens this Sunday, June 17th. This is a great opportunity to see how creative people get with their green spaces. Owners are on hand to answer questions. This is a self-directed tour. Buy your ticket for $15 at Figaro’s Garden Centre on Victoria Drive, grab a map of this year’s participating homes and off you go. Event happens between 10:00 and 4:00 pm. You can also pick up tickets at Eventbrite.

Ice Cream Social – Beta 5 Chocolates – June 16th & 17th

Beta 5 Chocolates is back to hosting their Ice Cream Socials on the weekends which means a decadently creative dish offered each week they choose to host their socials. This weekend’s treat is called Imagine. It features crunchy black rice and sesame granola, black sesame ice cream, white chocolate, pavlova meringue clouds. This treat is available Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm or until they sell out.

Bakery Pop Up – Les Amis du Fromage – June 9^th

Les amis du fromage is hosting another Bakery Pop Up Shop at their East Van location, 843 East Hastings Street this Saturday, June 9^th. This week Lauren Ritchie will be selling handmade loaves of bread from Noon to 5:00 pm or until she runs out.

Mid-Main Art Fair – Heritage Hall – June 10^th

Mid-Main Art Fair happens at the Heritage Hall this Sunday, June 10th. 17 artists will be showcasing their work which will be available for sale. Expect to find paintings, sculptures, photography and printmaking. Event happens from 11 am to 6 pm. Free admission.

Italian Day – Commercial Drive – Sunday, June 10th

One big street party happens this Sunday, June 10^th featuring all things Italian and much more. Commercial Drive from Broadway to Venables will be closed to vehicle traffic so you can wander the stretch and find an array of businesses offering great eats, good deals or just plain fun. There will be displays, booths and live music along this stretch. This year’s theme is music. Fun gets under way at Noon and goes till 8:00 pm.

Free Screening Wizard of Oz – Rio Theatre – June 10th

Whether your favourite is Dorothy, the Tin Man or The Scarecrow, check out the classic movie, The Wizard of Oz, at the Rio Theatre for free this Sunday, June 10th. Doors open at 12:30 pm, movie begins at 1:00 pm.

Retro Design & Antiques Fair – Croatian Cultural Centre – June 10th

The Retro Design & Antiques Fair is back this Sunday at the Croatian Cultural Centre from 10 am – 3 pm. There will be some 185 tables featuring eclectic, vintage, collectables, kitschy. It’s all over the map. Admission is $5, save for early bird (prior 10:00 am which is $20). Children under 13 are free with an adult.

Saturday it’s Riley Park (10 am – 2 pm) and Trout Lake (9 am – 2 pm) and Sunday, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is back at Dude Chilling Park from 10:00 am till 2:00 pm. For theatre, Diary of Ann Frank continues at Havana Theatre and C’mon Angie is on till Saturday at the Firehall Arts Theatre which touches on the issue of consent after a one night stand. Vancouver Golf Expo – PNE Forum – February 17th & 18th

If you love golf, then you may wish to check out the Vancouver Golf Expo happening this weekend at the PNE Forum. Expo runs Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Great Backyard Bird Count – February 16^th to 19^th

The Great Backyard Bird Count happens February 16^th to 19^th. If you love birds and can tell one from the other, you may wish to check out this event which asks everyday citizens to let those know that study birds what’s happening in our communities. Broken Tailbone – The Cultch – Till February 24th

We attended the opening of Broken Tailbone this week and what a unique fun show. Carmen Aguirre, who is a woman to be reckoned with and knows her mind, will take you through a tour of political history of Latin America. At the same time she interjects personal stories and teaches you some Latin dance moves. So bring your dancing shoes, a partner, a friend or go to make some new friends and DO check out Broken Tailbone. The production is on now at The Cultch until February 24^th.

Easy Moroccan Vegetarian – Trout Lake Community Centre – January 21

Chef Valentine of Tartine Maple will be leading a cooking class on January 21^st and will teach you in the ins and outs of some easy Moroccan vegetarian cuisine. The Bread Series ‘Rustic Yeast Bread – Italian Cultural Centre – January 22^nd

Fabrizio Busso, a professional baker who will teach you the basics of bread making including kneading and will have you shape and bake several different types of bread. No special equipment required. Five Course Beer Dinner – Tacofino (East Hastings Location) – January 25th

Tacofino at 2327 East Hastings Street is launching a series of beer and dinner events starting January 25^th. Beers from different breweries will be paired with their Baja style West Coast cuisine. Their first dinner will feature beer from Red Truck Brewing. There will be two seatings 6:00 pm and 8:30 pm. The cost is $50 per person. Tickets for the event available via Eventbrite.

Comedy, Live Music & Entertainment

Some interesting live music at Café Deux Soleils on January 21st, Keith Bennett and Blair Lewis perform harmonica jazz. Winter Farmer Markets happen this weekend, Saturday at Nat Bailey Stadium from 10 am to 2 pm and Sunday at Hastings Parking 10 am – 2 pm. Looking for an outdoor activity? Playland Nights – July 7, 2017

Playland kicks off an adult only evening from 7:00 pm to midnight this Friday, July 7th. This new kids free zone is complete with beer, wine, special cocktails including Candy Floss Martinis and Snow Cone Vodka and of course the midway games and 25 rides. Advance admission is $26, tickets at the gate are $29. If you miss this Friday, it’s happening every Friday in July.

Grease Sing-A-Long – July 7, 2017

If you love the movie Grease and the songs, you will want to stop in at the Rio Theatre Friday night. They will be showing the original movie and hosting a sing-a-long. Costumes welcome and encouraged. Movie kicks off at 7:30 pm. Advance tickets are available at Rio Theatre.

Ice Cream Social – July 8, 2017

Ice Cream Social is back at Beta 5 Chocolates this Saturday from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. If you love chocolate chip mint ice cream, you will want to check out their sundae special.

Tuning Of The Bikes – July 9, 2017

Strange Fellows Brewing is inviting you to come down for a beer on your bike, or with your bike. While enjoying your beer, you can have your bike tuned up for free by R.A.D. Cycles. Event happens Sunday, July 9th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm.

Artist’s Reception ‘Marni Harris’ – July 12, 2017

If you didn’t know, Strange Fellows Brewing regularly plays host to artists and showcases their work. They have a little gallery with its own Twitter feed, the Charles Clark. On July 12th, they will be hosting a reception for artist Marni Harris from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Looking for fun and games? Playland is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm this weekend. If you are looking for some family entertainment, the Rio Theatre is showing some classic movies. First up is Wizard of Oz at 5:30 pm on Saturday, or you prefer Batman, the original movie is being shown this Sunday at 6:30 pm. Looking to check out some music? Local talent, Yaa-Hemaa is at Café Deux Soleils this Friday at 9:00 pm featuring jazz, soul and R&B. Have a great weekend!

Are you looking to stay cool this summer? Well we have some sweet options for you to check out that might help with that.

Earnest Ice Cream

It will come as no surprise to anyone that follows us, that we are big fans of Earnest Ice Cream. The overall concept and the flavours, really what’s not to love it. Although Whiskey Hazelnut was the first flavor we were introduced to, their Salted Caramel is a go to for those wanting an indulgence. Tied for third is their seasonal Fresh Lemon which is the perfect balance of sweet and tart. To help beat the heat, Earnest Ice Cream has two locations to serve you. Their original location at 3992 Fraser Street is now open 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm and their new location at 1829 Quebec Street is open from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm. Beta 5 Chocolates

Beta 5 Chocolates has been making quite a name for itself with some of its award winning chocolates. They also make some other very amazing sweet treats. For the summer months of July and August, Beta 5 Chocolates is holding Ice Cream Socials on Fridays from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. At these socials, are serving up scoops of ice cream and sorbets in cream puff shells as well as sundaes. Also on hand will be their line of up of ice cream sandwiches which we hear are also available every day Tuesday to Sunday. While there, ask them about their FREE Feed the Bees Seed Packet. They are offering these up to customers to scatter bee-friendly wildflower seeds to help our local pollinators.

La Casa Gelato

La Casa Gelato is a right of passage if you grew up in East Vancouver. We love this place and who wouldn’t. La Casa Gelato started out with 40 flavours many years ago and now boasts over 500 flavours. You will find gelato, sorbetto and frozen yogurt inside La Casa Gelato and whether you want non-fat, non-dairy, low-fat or sugar-free, there are oh so many choices that include 218 flavours on site always. There truly is something for every taste and if you want to be adventurous there are many options. There is almost always a crowd, but lots of staff to serve you, tasters available and you will find lots of people gathering outside and across the street enjoying their gelato. La Casa Gelato is located at 1033 Venables Street (at Glen Drive) and open 7 days a week from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm.
