Halloween Events In East Vancouver

HalloweenPumpkin&LanternIf you are looking for something to do for Halloween, there are no lack of events this year. We have set out a sampling of some of the events happening in East Van.  If you plan on staying in this Halloween and catching up on a scary flick or two,  we recommend stopping into Black Dog Video on Commercial Drive to stock up.   If you want to go out and play, here’s What’s On: 

Parade of Lost Souls. This popular East Van tradition is back on Saturday, October 28th. This year’s theme is Alter Ego. The exact location of the event will be announced at midnight on October 28th on the Dusty Flowerpot website. As in past years, you can expect a parade of wild costumes, giant puppets, live music by East Van’s own Carnival Band among others, a Thriller Flash Mob and performance art created by local community members. The event features the Parade of Lost Souls which takes place near the ‘to be announced location in East Vancouver from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. This event is free and for all ages. Costumes are encouraged. For those wishing to carry on after the parade, there is an After Party at The Legion on Commercial Drive from 9:30 pm until 2:00 am.

Fright Nights. Playland is hosting 8 haunted houses including a new Keepers Doll Factory, 20 rides (5 more than last year we hear).  Fright Nights is on October 6th to October 31st (enter E. Hastings & Windermere). Tickets are available online at FrightNights.ca and can be purchased for a specific night.

Rio Theatre. The Rio has you covered leading up to Halloween. They kick things off on Friday night with Beetlejuice followed by Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Rocky Horror Picture Show rounding out the evening.   They’ve got you covered all weekend long two more showings of The Horror Picture Show on the Saturday and Sunday nights.  Plus Sunday a showing of Poltergeist and The Ghostbusters.

Halloween-Drive In Movie: Wesgroup Property and Fresh Air Cinemas brings you double feature drive-in movies to SE Vancouver along the Fraser River (Boundary Road and SE Marine Drive). Saturday, October 28th they will be starting off the evening with a showing of Casper followed by The Shining.  There will be a second round of movies Sunday, October 29th (rescheduled for the rained out event October 21st) with starts off with ET and is followed by Friday the 13th.  Perfect shows for Halloween weekend.  Cost if $20 per carload for 1 movie, $30 per carload for double feature.

80s Halloween  Party – Federico’s Supper Club is hosting an 80s Halloween Party on Friday, October 27th. The evening includes a 3 course dinner with a live music show by Mark Olexson and The A-Deez which sets the night up for dancing to great 80s music.

COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR THE WEE ONES

Trout Lake Community Centre: Halloween Celebration – Saturday, October 28th 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.  You are invited to come jump in the bouncy castle, play Halloween games, and make some pumpkin crafts. Lots more surprises planned for the wee ones. There is a cost of $4.00 per child.

Hastings Sunrise Pumpkin Patch:  On Saturday, October 28th Hastings Elementary School is hosting their 2nd Annual Pumpkin Patch Festival. Grab a pumpkin, a bite and enjoy some live music from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Admission by donation.

Spook-Tacular Science World On The Road: River District is hosting some Halloween down along the Fraser River Saturday, October 28th from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm with a live science show happening from 1:00 – 1:30 pm after which they’ll have ‘science on the spot’ demo stations for everyone to experience.

Halloween On The Drive: Commercial Drive Business Improvement Society is hosting some family friendly events throughout the day on Saturday, October 28th with many local businesses participating and handing out Halloween candy. From 6:00 to 7:30 pm in Grandview Park, the Commercial Drive Business Society is hosting free family fun including face painting, balloon twisting, caricatures and photo booths for those that want pics on their costume. The night will be topped off with fireworks from 7:30 to 8:00 pm in Grandview Park.Halloween-SpiderWebs

Voting Day – City of Vancouver By-Election – October 14, 2017

This Saturday, October 14th is voting day in the City of Vancouver’s by-election. This vacant seat is filling the chair left by Geoff Meggs who left to work in provincial politics with Premier John Horgan.  There are some fresh faces running who wish to make a difference in our civic landscape.  If you wish to know who is up for this vacant Council seat, Vancouver is Awesome, has a quick rundown on each candidate.  Whomever you decide to vote for, as always, we encourage you to have your say.  Polls are open 8:00 am to 8:00 pm To find out where to vote, visit City of Vancouver

Fall Record Convention – Heritage Hall – October 15, 2017 

A semi-annual record convention is happening at Heritage Hall this Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. Admission is $30.  You will, of course, find tables packed with records, CDs and more.
The Drive Season 2 Premiere – Rio Theatre – October 15, 2017
This locally produced show premieres its second season this Sunday at the Rio Theatre. Advance tickets are $13 or $15 at the door. Screening begins at 7:00 pm.  The show’s premise features 6 roommates living on Commercial Drive facing the realities of adulthood.

Thriller Flashmob – Britannia Community Centre – October 19, 2017
The Parade of Lost Souls is coming on October 28th. With it comes a host of great workshops at Britannia Community Centre. One of them is the Thriller Flashmob. Learn the dance moves and participate in the Thriller Flashmob during the event Saturday, October 28th.  This is one of 3 classes, the next classes follow on October 21st and 22nd.
 
Entertainment, Comedy + Live Theatre

Friday is the last chance to catch the films from the 36th Annual Vancouver Film Festival at the Rio Theatre. This Sunday, Cafe Deux Soleils hosts live music by Travis James with Portraits of Us. Show begins at 8:00 pm. For something a big different, local talent Rodney DeCroo performs with Mark Davis and Sarah Wheeler  on October 19th at Hidden City 651 East Hastings St. Show begins at 9:00 pm.   To see more of what’s on, check our Events Listing.

Story Story Lie At The Rio Theatre September 21, 2017

storyStoryLieInLightsCan you spot a liar? How about putting it to the test and checking out Story Story Lie? This is an interactive show with one simple premise: Vancouver’s best intimate share. The stories are often hilarious as well as embarrassing and just a little to strange to be true. What’s the catch? Well someone’s lying of course. The audience gets to take part in the interrogation to reveal who the liar is. And the first audience member to guess who the liar is, wins the grand prize, as well as the respect, admiration of the crowd and bragging rights. The Westender calls this show “One of the most inventive events on the Vancouver arts calendar” Story Story Lie now moves to a bigger space at The Rio Theatre for its first show in this venue on Thursday, September 21st.  They have a great line up for their first show at the Rio including Leo and Gemini Award winner Erica Sigurdson, TJ Dawe and comedian Patrick Maliha. Tickets are available in advance online at Rio Theatre for $10 online or $12 at the door.

Family Night Series – Grandview Park – August 25, 2017

The Commercial Drive Business Improvement Society is hosting a free community event in Grandview Park Friday, August 11th. The evening which runs from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm includes crafts for kids, poetry, photography and live music.

Grease Sing-A-Long – Rio Theatre – August 26, 2017

The Rio Theatre is hosting a Grease Sing-a-Long complete with lyrics on the screen, the bouncing ball, prop bags and contest. This is an all ages event and costumes are  encouraged and audience participation we are pretty sure mandatory. Fun kicks off at 7:30 pm. Tickets available online at the Rio Theatre.

Small Town Artillery CD Release Concert – The Cultch – August 26, 2017

Musical event happening at The Cultch Saturday night. The horn-powered rock quintet Small Town Artillery releases their full-length, self-titled LP in The Historic Theatre. An evening designed to take the listener on an immersive, explosive, emotional and inevitable ride through the jungles of the heart. Also featured CBC Searchlight winners The Long War and Blues-rock swaggerers Years of the Wolf. Tickets are on a sliding scale $10-$40. For tickets, visit The Cultch.

Toast Pop Up Shop – The Pie Shoppe – August 26 & 27, 2017

The French sisters at The Pie Shoppe, 1875 Powell Street, will be featuring a brunch pop up with Chef Dakota this weekend.  They will be featuring Toast in many forms from around the City with a variety of toppings. They will also be serving their own dam fine coffee, Panoramic Roasters. Brunch happens from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Free Screening – Game of Thrones – Rio Theatre – August 27, 2017

If you are a fan of the Game of Thrones, you may wish to check out the free screening of the last 2 episodes of the current season happening this Sunday, August 27th at the Rio Theatre.

Artful Sundays – Napier Greenway -August 27, 2017

Artful Sundays return to the Napier Greenway at the Britannia Community Centre this Sunday.  You can expect to find local artisans, workshops, demonstrations and live music.  Event happens Noon to 5:00 pm. It is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend.

Summer Outdoor Concert + Lantern Procession – Trout Lake – August 30, 2017

You are invited to catch the last summer outdoor concert at Trout Lake Community Centre. The musical stylings of Checo Tohomaso who will be on stage at 6:30 pm.  After the concert, there will be a lantern procession around the lake at dusk. You will also have the opportunity stop by and make your own lantern from 6:00 pm to 8:15 pm, or you can bring your own from home. Either way, we suspect it will be pretty magical, musicians will lead the parade around Trout Lake.

Entertainment, Comedy + Live Theatre

Looking for theatre? Havana Theatre is featuring the show Sexual Perversity in Chicago  until August 26th. Show follows a set of friends, two of whom are lovers. Tickets are $13.  If it’s movies you are after, Rio Theatre is ON this weekend with Dirty Dancing on Friday night at 9:00 pm for something fun. PNE Playland is on all weekend with food, beer, games, rides, Super Dogs, shopping & more. Musical performances this weekend include  the band Chicago on Friday night and Colin James on Saturday night. We took in the Colin James show last year, he always puts on an amazing show at this venue.

Community Paint Day – Britannia Community Centre – August 19, 2017

Are you artistic? Love to paint? You are invited to join others in creating ground murals at Britannia Community Centre from Noon to 4:00 pm this Saturday.

New play Two Rooms is featured at Havana Theatre from August 15th to 19th. The play focuses on a hostage taking in Beirut and the actions of the spouse on the other side of the world and how that culminates into a startling conclusion. Looking to laugh? Don’t forget Havana Theatre features improv comedy Friday and Sunday nights. Another option for entertainment tonight, is the Rio Theatre which is hosting Lord of the Schwings: A Tolkien Burlesque Night. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The fun kicks off at 8:00 pm.

SUP-A Series  – Sassy One-Of-A Kind Theatre – August 1 – 12, 2017

An interesting new series being featured at Havana Theatre.  Un-produced Projects brings together an eclectic mix of up-beat theatre, never before seen in Vancouver.  Participants involved in this project wish to promote more local and independent theatre. So they will be a showcasing a different one-of-a-kind show each evening for 12 days from August 1 to 12, save for Sunday, August 6th which show will be at 2:00 pm.

Game of Thrones – August 4 + 5, 2017

Workshop Build Your Own Trunk – August 5, 2017

Fundraiser for Red Cross BC Wildfire Relief Fund – August 10, 2017

12 Kings Pub at 395 Kingsway invites you to a fundraiser on Thursday, August 10th.  The evening will raise funds for the Red Cross BC Wildfire Relief Fund with a portion of every beer sold going towards the Red Cross. There will also be silent auction with some great items on hand. Again, all proceeds raised will go to the Red Cross. The evening also includes prizes such as JRFM prize pack, 50/50 draw and the opportunity to win 2 tickets to the Whistler Village Beer Festival.  Lots of breweries involved in this event. Playland Nights – July 28, 2017

Last chance to catch Playland Nights which is an evening set aside for adults having fun at Playland without the kids. Kicks off at 7:00 pm till midnight. If you prefer to go with the kids, Playland is now open during the week 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. After July 31st, it’s open 7 days a week 10:00 am to 7:00 pm until the Fair at the PNE begins August 19th.

80s Night at Federico’s Supper Club – July 28, 2017

The Big Sound – Vancouver 26 Piece Soul Orchestra – July 29, 2017

 Free Pancake Breakfast – July 30, 2017

There may not be a free lunch anymore, but there is a free pancake breakfast this Sunday, July 30th at The Cultch.  You are invited to breakfast outdoors with the gang at The Cultch and enjoy some good food, make some new friends and maybe learn more about some of the great art coming at The Cultch for the 2017-2018 season. An RSVP is requested which can be done online at The Cultch. Breakfast runs form 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.

 The Geekenders Present A Harry Potter Burlesque Birthday Bash – July 31, 2017

If you are looking for a silly and sexy fun night out, this is your ticket. You can expect an evening with Harry Potter styled Burlesque hosted by the Geekenders.  Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Show gets under way at 8:00 pm at the Rio Theatre.

Italian Market – June 16, 2017

The outdoor Italian Market is back at the Italian Cultural Centre Friday, June 16th. This market is situated in the parking lot of the Italian Cultural Centre and has a great mix of vendors which include food, artisans and bits of Italian flavour sprinkled throughout.  Food trucks are always on hand and we’d be very surprised if you didn’t find some pizza and cannoli. Market happens from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Perfect stop after work for a shop, bite and if you want to move, dance! See below for more.

Tango Lessons – June 16, 2017

Have you ever wanted to learn to tango? You are in luck. The Italian Cultural Centre is now hosting drop-in classes every Friday until July 28th at 6:00 pm in the piazza at the Italian Cultural Centre.  Cost is $20 for each drop in session and class runs till 7:30 pm. To register, visit Il Centro.

Farmers Market  – June 17 & 18, 2017

This weekend, you have the opportunity to check out 3 farmer markets. First up, is the largest hosted by Vancouver Farmers Market at Trout Lake from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 17th. Also on Saturday, you will find River District Farmers Market on the Fraser River in SE Vancouver just below SE Marine Drive at Kerr Street from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Sunday, June 18th , Vancouver Farmers Market hosts the Mount Pleasant Market from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Great Grandview Garage Sale – June 17, 2017

Car Free Day Main Street – June 18, 2017

Car Free Day happens this Sunday, June 18th on Main Street from Noon to 7:00 pm. This is an all day event in which car traffic is blocked between Broadway and 30th Avenue.  There are a host of activities for all ages. Getting there by transit, bike or foot is recommended. They have elected to host it on Sunday, July 9th.

East Van Garden Tour – June 18, 2017

If you wish to tour some of the beautiful gardens in East Vancouver, this self-guided tour happens this Sunday and it’s a great way to see how others use their outdoor space. You can do the tour at your own pace and see as much or as little as you’d like. Tickets for the East Van Garden Tour are a very reasonable $15 and are available at Britannia Community and Figaro’s Garden Centre on Victoria Drive.

Gourmet Ice Cream Tour – June 18, 2017

Off The Eaten Track regularly has a great line up of foodie tours around the City. We’ve learnt their Gourmet Ice Cream Tour is now back for the summer months. A tour runs this Sunday, June 18th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Cost is $29.99. If you can’t make it Sunday, tour also runs Thursdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

Eat.Drink. Play. – June 22, 2017

Eat.Drink.Play. is a fundraiser for the Firehall Arts Centre and brings together local food purveyors, distillers of craft beer and spirits and art as well as a silent auction. Tickets are $35 plus $20 for artists. For tickets, visit the Firehall Arts Centre.

The Rio Theatre’s Vinyl Cafe: A Tribute to Stuart Mclean – June 22, 2017

The Rio Theatre plays host to a night of  story telling and live music in honour of the late, CBC host, Stuart Mclean. In honour of his legacy as a great Canadian story teller, they have invited some of their favorite local story tellers and musicians to come together to perform original work and celebrate the art of story telling. Entertainment: Arts, Theatre, Comedy & Live Music

If you are looking for live music, Tangent Café has The Meghan Gilhesphy Trio on Sunday, June 18th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. If it’s a Latin groove you are looking for, Café Deux Soleils is playing host to Wasakaka on Friday, June 16th.  If it’s Trivia your after, Tuesday night is the night.  The Eastwood at 4245 Fraser Street hosts a Trivia Night, as does The Storm Crow Tavern on Tuesdays, but the name gives it away – Nerdin’ Trivia Tuesday. On the other hand, if you love to sing, you may wish check out the Impromptu Rock Choir which checks in every Tuesday night at 7:00 pm at the Wise Hall.

East Van Extravaganza Saturday May 20, 2017 At The Rio Theatre

AffordableConcertSeriesIf you are looking for a fun night out, maybe listen to some live music and dance, you may wish to check out this East Van Extravaganza happening Saturday at the Rio Theatre. They are hosting the Affordable Concert Series which consists of a line up of 4 bands, being Disco Funeral with an energetic and electric vibe, then there’s Hard Rock Miners with Hillbilly Party Punk, next up is Rio Samaya with their South American Latin fusion and The Walkins which we hear will get you grinding and grooving.  As this is East Van, this event is come as you are whether it’s your Daytons, Blundstones, Berkinstocks or anything in between, you are invited to come down and get into the groove.  Tickets are a very reasonable $20 in advance or $25 at the door.  If you are organized and plan to go with a group of friends, you can purchase a group pack of 10 tickets for $150.  Note, this event has bar service thus not suitable for minors.
