Think about it … no more mortgage, no more long lines at the bank, no coffee shops, no honey in glass jars, no Skytrain, no buses, animals running wild, no more towers being built, no exercise class, no swimming pools.  Ontroerend Goed, creators of Fight Night, ask the question would it ever get this far?  Would we find a solution? Read the news any given day, some days you think it might just come to this. So what would a world without us be like? Rio Theatre – Old School #SaveTheRio Fundraisers – March 30th and 31st 

If you are a fan of the Rio Theatre and wish to support a great spot for independent theatre, musicians and performers, check out the telethon like fundraising events happening this weekend. First up, is An Evening With Kevin Smith. There are 2 shows 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm on Friday, March 30th. Advance tickets are sold out, but there will be some tickets at the door. Golden Egg Hunt – River District – April 1st

River District in SE Vancouver is hosting a golden egg hunt Sunday, April 1st from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. There will be chocolate egg hunts, balloons, cotton candy, crafts, face painting and a chocolate bunny draw.  Starbucks will be on hand serving hot chocolate and coffee. Romer’s Burgers providing frozen yogurt and mini doughnuts. This is a free event, but registration is requested.

Easter Eggstravaganza Swim – Britannia Pool – April 1st 

Britannia Pool at Britannia Community Centre is hosting a free family swim this Sunday, April 1st from 2:30 – 5:00 pm. They will also have some Easter treats on hand and games for everyone to play.

Holiday Free Skate – Britannia  Ice Rink – April 2nd

If you are looking to ice skate, Britannia Ice Rink is hosting a free family skate this Monday, April 2nd from 1:00 to 3:30 pm.

Chelsea Hotel: Songs Of Leonard Cohen – Firehall Arts Centre – April 21st

Haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a writer checks into New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song. Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not only forget, but erase from memory. This is the premise of the Chelsa Hotel which pays tribute to the songs of Leonard Cohen. This production on its final run continues this weekend. Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

If you are looking for some live music this weekend, the Kin Balam Quartet is at Café Deux Soleils Saturday night at 8:00 pm. Little Conversations An Evening Of Music & Words With Blue Dirt Girl At The Cultch April 6th

Whether they’re in-depth talks or brief exchanges on the street, conversations are how we connect with the world.  Through her music, blue dirt girl unearths, unbuttons and examines all of her conversations—from her working and writing sessions with her bandmates to the regular Friday morning discussions with the women behind Thinking Ship poems, and Sob Stories podcasts to the spontaneous chats she has with the people she meets throughout the day. Out of these little conversations come inspiration and collaboration.

On April 6th you have the rare opportunity to listen in on the conversation between the music of blue dirt girl and the poems of Thinking Ship; take a moment to engage with Sob Stories who will be collecting conversations for the podcast in the Founders’ Lounge at The Cultch.  A performance follows at 8:00 pm in the Historic Theatre. Tickets are $25 and available online from The Cultch.

If you aren’t familiar with Blue Dirt Girl, it is Kathryn Sutherland on lead vocals and electric guitar, AlbertKlassen on stand up and electric bass and vocals, and Jason Overy on drums and percussion. After collaborating on and off for 17 years, the trio formed blue dirt girl in 2016 and recorded their first album, Crazy Beautiful in 2017. With a sound that moves from swing to pop and back again, blue dirt girl pulls it all together with a jazzy vibe and Kathryn’s soulful vocals.

Butcher – The Cultch – Till March 31st

Blackbird – Backspace – March 21st to April 1st

A play dealing with some poignant subject matter is happening at Backspace, 1318 Grant Street.  The production touches on the relationship of Una, a 12 year old girl, and Ray a 40 year old male. The two had a sexual relationship for which Ray served a sentence, changed his name and began a new file, but Una tracked him down and confronted him, but the question is what does she want?  The play features a great line up of local talent including local musician Rodney DeCroo.  Tickets are $15 and available through Eventbrite.

Made On Salt Spring – Heritage Hall – March 23rd to 25th

This weekend over 40 artisans from Salt Spring Island will be at the Heritage Hall with a wide variety of offerings including pottery, jewellery, food, woodwork and much more.  The event kicks off Friday afternoon from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and continues Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and again Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Greyhaven Bird Sanctuary Open House – March 24th

Greyhaven Bird Sanctuary is hosting their last Open House at this location before they need to move. You are invited to stop by and meet a variety of exotic birds including macaws, amazons and cockatoos.  These exotic birds are available for adoption, so if you might be interested, this is a great opportunity to check things out. This is a free event happening from Noon to 4:00 pm, but registration is requested through Eventbrite.

Nicole Alivojvodic Reviews Butcher On Now At The Cultch Till March 31st

TheButcherPhotoByTimMathesonNot for the light of heart, this stage thriller is brought to The Cultch by Prime Cuts Collective, a company formed exclusively for the purpose of producing Butcher in Vancouver. Written by Nicolas Billon, this play is a dark and suspenseful exploration of the nature of justice and revenge, earning a standing ovation on opening night. Starring Peter Anderson, Lindsey Angell, Noel Johansen, and Daryl Shuttleworth, Butcher’s all-star cast keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

While the story is inspired by very real historical atrocities, the play is set in Toronto and centers on the history and politics of the fictional Eastern European country “Lavinia”. Impressively, an entire language, “Lavinian”, was created for the purpose of this play and learned by the cast. The language has Slavic roots and can actually be understood quite well by anyone familiar with a Slavic language.

Butcher brilliantly captures themes relevant to recent and ancient history at the same time. While the main plot draws on real civil conflicts that occurred less than 30 years ago in the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda, the themes of penance and blood vengeance point back to the writings of Aeschylus and explicitly draw on the tropes of classical Greek tragedy. Billon takes these seemingly archaic concepts and shows how truly prevalent they are in the modern world. Further, while Butcher speaks to atrocities far from home it maintains a distinctly Canadian voice, alerting us to our place in these global histories.

A Crime Thriller The Butcher Comes To The Cultch March 20th to 31st

TheButcherThe Cultch and Prime Cuts Collective invite you to take a ride on a philosophical crime thriller, The Butcher.  Who is the Butcher? At a police station a mysterious old man is found wearing a foreign military uniform and a Santa hat. A butcher’s hook hangs around his neck, and gouged on the end is a business card with the words, “Arrest me,” scrawled on it. As a lawyer, a police officer, and a translator struggle to unravel the truth, they uncover a past that won’t stay buried, and a decades-old quest for justice that must be served.  Dark secrets come to light. A decades-old quest for justice that must be served.  The production we hear is not what you might expect and will have you guessing the entire time.   The Butcher takes place in the Historic Theatre at The Cultch March 20th to March 31st. Nicole Alivojvodic Reviews The After After Party On Now At The Cultch Till March 17th

AfterAfterPartyTheCultchStrap in for a night of shameless, riotous comedy with Jules and Fiona at Vancity Culture Lab. Winner of the 2016 Cultchivating the Fringe Award, “The After After Party” is the perfect girls night out! Written and performed by Katey Hoffman and Cheyenne Mabberley, this gloriously relatable play will fire up nostalgia in anyone who was a teen in the early 2000’s. Grab your BFF, sit back with your Cosmopolitan (or glass of straight Fireball) and reminisce about the NSYNC posters that were plastered on your bedroom wall and Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag” being perpetually stuck in your head.

What starts off as a high school version of “The Hangover”, quickly morphs into a tale of female friendship and acceptance. Albeit ridiculous at times, Hoffman and Mabberley have become leaders in female forward comedy, and their company, “After Party Theatre”, is committed to fostering the careers of women. This show will throw you back to the desperation you felt as a teen to be beautiful and popular and remind you to value your female friendships through the inconvenient and unconditional love between Jules and Fiona.

Call To Artists: The Cultch Gallery Seeks Artists For 2018/2019 Gallery Season

ArtWorksThe Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, has put out a call to visual artists to submit applications to exhibit their work during their 2018/2019 gallery season. Each exhibition will run for 3 to 4 weeks between August 2018 and June 2019. Submissions can be single or multiple artists’ proposals.

The Cultch has built a reputation over the past 40 years as one of Western Canada’s most innovative and exciting presenting venues. The mandate of The Cultch is to contribute to the enrichment of the city and community’s social and cultural life through the presentation of innovative programs of contemporary music, theatre, dance and visual arts by established and emerging artists.

The Cultch Gallery is a multi-use space and not a traditional art gallery as it also serves as the lobby for performances and is occasionally used for meetings and other small events. Due to the diverse nature of this space, submissions that include sculptures or free standing art will not be accepted.

Submission Criteria for Artists:

  1. An artist statement
  2. Artist bio(s)
  3. Resume/CV
  4. A complete list of images you are submitting, which should include title, size, medium. These images do not have to be the work you will be showing. They want to get a good overview of your work.
  5. You can submit up to 10 images. Image files should be in .jpeg format. File names must include the artist name, title of artwork and size of the work when framed: (example: Yuri Arajs – Sunny Day -18 in x 30 in. jpg)

Deadline for applications is May 31, 2018. Email your submissions to gallery@thecultch.com, but you can also mail a CD with your application to:

Nicole Alivojvodic Reviews PSS PSS On Now At The York Theatre Until March 4th
