Gifting An East Van Experience This Holiday Season

17 Dec

GiftBoxXmasWe here at ILiveInEastVan.com are big fans of gifting experiences. There is so much to see and do close to home and sometimes we just get busy and don’t get organized to put it together. So why not gift someone a fun East Van experience this holiday season?   We have set out below a few of our favourites which include brewery and foodie tours, cooking classes, theatre as well as dinner and dancing.  We have included links which take you directly to each site to make that gift giving easier.

Vancouver Brewery Tour – East Van Brewery Tour

Vancouver Brewery Tours does great brewery tours in and around East Vancouver. A $75 gift certificate gets you onto one of their regularly scheduled brewery tours which run approximately 3 hours. Another option is purchasing tickets for their Beer and Food Pairing Tours which happen in January 2016 for Dine Out.

Off The Eaten Track – Culinary Tours

Off The Eaten Track offers a number of culinary tours including Vancouver’s Best Brunch Tour which takes you through the Hastings Sunrise area for $65. There is also the Railtown Urban Eats Tour runs you $55 and starts in the historic ‘Japantown’ and takes you to a number of stops including Railtown Café and the Settlement Building.  Also on offer are the Main Street Hidden Gems Culinary Tour for $65. Then a personal favourite, the Vancouver Distillery Tour which stops at a number of local distilleries and provides tours, tastings and bites for $75.  Tours all begin at the Waterfront Station and times vary but approximately 2 ½ hours for each.

Federico’s Supper Club – Dinner & Dancing

What about a gift certificate for an evening of dinner and dancing. Federico’s Supper Club offers amazing Italian food, wine and impeccable service. You will regularly find owner, Federico Fuoco, belting out tunes but they regularly bring in lots of local talent to mix things up.

Les Amis Du Fromage – Wine & Cheese Tasting

If you know someone that loves cheese, you may wish to consider purchasing a ticket(s) to one of Les Amis Du Fromage’s upcoming wine & cheese tasting classes. They have some delicious classes lined up for the New Year including  Viva Le France on January 27th and March 9th for $65 and a Wine & Cheese Tasting Class on February 23 for $60.

The Gourmet Warehouse – Cooking Classes

Have a foodie in your life that loves cooking? Or someone that wishes to kick up their cooking skills a notch to impress that special someone? The Gourmet Warehouse offers some delicious and fun cooking classes. In the New Year they are offering Flavours of Morocco on January 23rd for $65,  David Robertson of ‘The Dirty Apron’ will be on hand the evening of January 28th showing you how to make some delish dishes for $75, or if you are feeding a crowd for SuperBowl this year, there is Game Day – Feeding A Crowd for $65. Most classes are instructional vs. hands on, but certainly informative.  To purchase tickets, call the store at T: 604.253.3022.

The Cultch – Live Theatre

This is a favourite spot of ours. The Cultch has an amazing array of talent that graces their stages whether drama, comedy, musical, historical, they cover all the bases. In the New Year, they have an interesting show we have our eye on called Leftovers. It features Charlie Demers, one of the stars of CBC Radio’s the Debators and best-selling author. This is a political comedy which we hear will cut through decades of BS.   Tickets are available online from $10. Note the show itself takes place at the York Theatre between  January 26 – 30, 2016.

New In Town: BrewsNBikes – Free Cycling Brewery Tours

17 Aug

WireBikeMatthewTrowVancouver’s growing craft beer industry is certainly creating new businesses along side their beer. There are now options for behind the scene brewery tours like those offered by Vancouver Brewery Tours which does brewery tours on the weekends and has now added a Beer and Food Tour on Tuesday afternoons. Then there is Vine & Hops which also does brewery tours and on Thursdays, they do a “Hop & Sip And A Shuttle” service that travels between six East Van craft breweries on a set schedule.  Now there is a new tour in town and just in case you’ve been living in a bubble, Vancouver has a growing cycling population, so that’s where BrewsNBikes comes in. They are part of this cycling culture in Vancouver and they wish to take you on a tour of some of East Van’s local craft breweries on your bike. This is a passion project for those behind this idea. They love biking, biking, meeting new people and supporting local businesses. And yes, it really is free, but of course tips or rounds of beer are always appreciated. BrewsNBikes generally sticks to the East Vancouver area which includes heading up to Main Street where a number of local breweries are located as well. For more information or to set your cycling brewery tour, you can contact BrewNBikes by email at brewsnbike@gmail.com or you can you can follow them on Twitter @Brewsnbikestour or Instagram @brewsnbikes.  Cheers.

Beer Chocolate & Spirits Tour By Vancouver Brewery Tours On February 14th SOLD OUT

22 Jan

VDayVBTFeb14Ryan Mackey owner of local tour company, Vancouver Brewery Tours, is hosting a unique tour for Valentine’s Day “For The Love of Craft”.  Vancouver Brewery Tours will take you on a tour of some great East Vancouver spots.  In no particular order, they will take you to the newest craft brewery in town Strange Fellows Brewing located at 1345 Clark Drive with a great space, then to Storm Brewing. Owner and head brewmaster, James Walton, has been on the craft brewery scene since 1995, then a delectable detour to one of our favourite places for chocolate, the Schokolade Chocolate Café in the East Village. They have a dark chocolate bar with caramel, lavender and sea salt that is a must try should you get the chance.  Then off to another local favourite Odd Society Spirits which are the makers of many spirits including East Van Vodka, Crème de Cassis and Wallflower Gin. Odd Society Spirits makes some creative cocktails in their Tasting Lounge including a fennel sour that caught our eye.  The For The Love Of Craft runs Saturday, February 14th from 2:00 pm to 5:45 pm. Tickets are available from Vancouver Brewery Tours for $79 per person.  Beer, chocolates and spirits really how can one go wrong?

East Van Craft Brew & Culinary Tours Starting January 18th

In case you haven’t heard, Dine Out Vancouver gets under way on January 17th.  Dine Out Vancouver is billed as Canada’s largest restaurant festival. This annual event is produced by Tourism Vancouver and presented by American Express.  This is a 17 day calendar of culinary events with hotel options.  The festival gives diners the opportunity to select from over 200 restaurants each offering unique three course prix-fix meals at $18, $28 or $38 per person. The full line up of restaurants will be announced today, January 6th

What caught my interest this year is the number of special events being featured as part of Dine Out Vancouver. Some of the events include guided dining adventures, culinary and cocktail tours, cooking classes and demonstrations, debates, guest lectures, BC wine and craft beer tastings and more. For a full listing, click on Events.

East Van will be showcased by Vancouver Brewery Tours and Off The Eaten Track. They have combined their talents to offer the East Van Craft Brew & Culinary Tour.  On this tour you will stop at two local breweries and three food stops in East Vancouver. You will learn about the growing craft beer movement with samples, of course, and be able to meet some of the people that make this “liquid gold”.  After your thirst is quenched, they will take you to the very up-and-coming East Village to sample some locally made sausages, traditional Roman pizza and a stout-infused cake. I’m going to take a shot in the dark here that this is the rather famous Black & Tan Cake at Black Rook Bakehouse, but don’t take my word for it.  Taste it! It’s on a Top 10 List of Things You Must Try Before You Die.  It’s certainly on my Top 10 list. If you wish to participate in the East Van Craft Brew & Culinary Tour, you best hop to it. Tours have been scheduled for 7 dates, 3 of which are already sold out.  Dates the tours are still available (as of today’s writing) are January 18th, 23rd, 24th and 31st.  The tour begins at 3:00 pm and runs for 3 hours.  Cost is $65 and includes all food and beverage samples at 5 different locations, transportation, an experienced tour guide and tax.  Tours begin at Waterfront Station. Tickets are available online through Tickets Tonight.
