Cooking Classes At Gourmet Warehouse This Spring

The Gourmet Warehouse has another round of delicious cooking classes lined up this Spring. These classes are a great way to spend an afternoon or evening as the case may be and meet some like-minded food lovers. Personally, we also like the shopping after the cooking class as participants are offered a 10% discount for purchases made the day of your class. Everyday Thai – Saturday, April 13th 11:00 am – 2:00 pm 

Chef Cindy Low will demonstrate how easy it is to prepare delicious and mouth-watering Thai dishes, from an everyday curry to exotic Tom Yum spaghetti with prawns. You will learn about lemongrass, curry pastes, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, and more. You are encouraged to come hungry. Here’s what you’ll learn to make:

MENU

• Thai salad with kale, organic greens, carrots, apples, peanuts,
• Toasted coconut chips, chili lime dressing
• Tom Yum spaghetti with prawns – rice spaghetti, Tom Yum flavours, tomatoes,
Thai basil, prawns
• Thai yellow curry with chicken, seasonal vegetables, coconut milk
• Jasmine rice
• Mango coconut ice cream

Perfectly Seasoned ‘Exotic Flavours From Around The World’
April 25th 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Chef David Robertson of the Dirty Apron will teach you the perfect art of seasoning. He will feature an array of spices which we hear will take your dinner ideas to a whole new level. Delish menu includes:

MENU

• Ling Cod Vindaloo with crispy curry leaves
• Mexican smoked chili and guava braised beef short rib with an avocado crema
• South Indian spiced pork tenderloin alongside lemon rice
• Burnt pineapple and cardamom ice cream

Easy Vegetarian – Thursday, May 9th 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Chef Mark Singson who was runner up in Season 6 of Top Chef Canada is going to be demonstrating some unique flavor combinations as well as plate presentations.  Food and fun re on the menu including these delectable dishes:

MENU

• Singson’s signature hummus with fire grilled sourdough
• Oven roasted beet salad with fresh chèvre and lemon vinaigrette
• Medley of chickpeas and assorted vegetables served with potatoes and seasoned
fragrant rice
• Sweet traditional vanilla custard with apricots and warm coffee

Gifting An East Van Experience

We are big fans of gifting experiences which is not only fun but creates lasting memories for the recipient.  There are many options locally here whether it’s brewery tours, gourmet tours, dining and dancing, cooking classes and more.  We have set out below a few of our favourites.  We have included links which take you directly to each site to make gift giving that much easier.

Vancouver Brewery Tour – East Van Brewery Tour

Vancouver Brewery Tours does great brewery tours in and around East Vancouver. Tours start at $79.99 and can be beer tasting only or beer and food tasting.  Vancouver Brewery Tours has a regularly scheduled brewery tours which run approximately 3 hours.

Off The Eaten Track – Culinary Tours

Off The Eaten Track offers a number of culinary tours including Railtown Urban Eats Tour for $59 and Olympic Village Tour for $80. Tours all begin at the Waterfront Station and times vary but are approximately 2 ½ hours for each.

Federico’s Supper Club – Dinner & Dancing

What about a gift certificate for an evening of dinner and dancing. Federico’s Supper Club offers amazing Italian food, wine and impeccable service. You will regularly find owner, Federico Fuoco, belting out tunes but they regularly bring in lots of local talent to mix things up.

Les Amis Du Fromage – Wine & Cheese Tasting

If you know someone that loves cheese, you may wish to consider purchasing a ticket(s) to one of Les Amis Du Fromage’s upcoming wine & cheese tasting classes. The regularly host tastings, but heads up, these classes do sell out quick. Alternatively, what about a gift certificate to use in store. Trying a variety of cheeses is certainly a delish experience and can get costly, so a gift card to this spot would be welcome in our Christmas stocking.

The Cultch, The York, Firehall Arts Centre – Live Theatre

Terminal City Glass – Glassblowing Workshop

The Gourmet Warehouse – Cooking Classes

Beginner Woodwork Class Make A Cutting Board – Union Wood Co.

If you know someone that wishes to take a stab at woodworking. Union Wood Co. offers a great beginners class in February. It’s a 3 hour woodwork course in which you learn to make a cutting board. You learn about safety, machinery and all the tools. At the end of the class, you leave with your custom cutting board made to your specifications.  Cost is $155 and would make a great gift experience.

Park Board Gift Card – City of Vancouver

Are you buying a gift for a family? What about a Park Board Gift Card.  Right now a $50 purchase gets you an additional $10 which the recipient can use at any local community centre to swim, skate, do yoga, play golf, take a cooking class, enroll kids in swimming lessons and much more.

Chocolate Challenge At The Gourmet Warehouse May 10

ChocolateChallenge2018The Chocolate Challenge is back at the Gourmet Warehouse on May 10, 2018. If you love chocolate, this is the place to be.  The Chocolate Challenge is truly a decadent event for chocolate lovers.  This event pits local chocolatiers against each other to create something amazing, both beautiful and delish, with chocolate.  You have the opportunity to taste their creations and vote on them.  This event is a fundraiser for 3 great local charities, specifically the Strathcona Backpack Program, Project Chef and the Vancouver Firefighters `Snacks for Kids` Program. Tickets are $79 and 100% of ticket sale proceeds go towards these charities. As well, there will be a silent auction featuring a host of items including a round trip flight and hotel accommodations to San Francisco, hands-on sushi making workshop, chef’s table tasting menus at some local restaurants and more all to help raise funds.  To keep you fed and hydrated during this evening event, there will be gourmet food stations situated around the store along with a wine bar.  Event gets under way at 6:30 pm.  Come out and try some amazing chocolate, socialize with other chocolate lovers and support local charities doing great work in our community. Paella Party – Saturday, April 28, 2018

Chef Cindy Low invites you to a taste of Spain.  Spain is the home of paella and endless tapas. Come learn the secrets to making a great paella and delish tapas. Some of the dishes you will learn to make include:

  • Chicken and Chorizo Paella with Spanish Rice, Saffron and Vegetables
  • Prawns With Garlic
  • Tapas Platter
  • Salad with romaine, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, olives and sherry vinaigrette
  • Blood Orange Ice Cream

Modern Thai Kitchen – Saturday,  June 16, 2018 

In this demonstration class, Chef Cindy Low will teach you how to make some delicious Thai food. She’ll also pass on some tips on how to buy, use and store the ingredients. You will learn how to make the following dishes:

  • Grilled chicken skewers, spicy peanut dippinig sauce

Some Delish Cooking Classes Coming In 2018

EastCountryPatesA New Year is upon us.  Who hasn’t made a resolution to learn something new.  We try and kick our cooking skills up a notch.  Thus love spending time at cooking classes learning new dishes especially this time of year when it’s cold outside.  We’ve put together a selection of upcoming classes whether you are a beginner or seasoned cook, we are sure you can take away something from these classes to do at home.

French Gastronomy Series: East Country Pâtés – Uncommon Cafe – January 24, 2018

Valentine of Tartine Maple introduces a cooking class series that will take you on a culinary tour of France. Each class in the series brings you food from a different region of France. While learning about culinary and cultural facts, Valentine will prepare a main dish and sides typical of the chosen region. The first class in this series begins January 24th entitled French Gastronomy Series: East Country Pates. This class will focus on East “Terroir”. You will learn to make:

  • Chicken Liver Mousse: The easiest pate.
  • “Terrine Campagnard”. A rich meat pâté, delicious served for appetizer with bread and pickles.
  • Pâté en Croûte: the richness of a warm porc and poultry pâté cooked in puff pastry.

The Raspberry Trio – Gourmet Warehouse – February 4, 2018 

Chef Steven Hodge, Owner/Chef of West Vancouver’s “Temper Pastry & Chocolate” hosts this demonstration class.  You will learn three different techniques to use raspberries in a dessert to create some amazing dishes including:RaspberryTrioGourmetWarehouse

The ladies behind Off The Eaten Track Walking Tours provide some delicious walking tours in which you get to taste your way around the City. Shop Local With These East Van Shops

Why not stop into one of these great local businesses that will a) not only appreciate the business, but b) offer some truly great service.  We’ve set out a few of our favourite spots we think are great for gift giving. Note, many of the stores have extended hours this week to help you with your Christmas shopping.

Les amis du fromage – 843 East Hastings Street

For the cheese lover, this is a great spot, but that’s not all they have.  They have a host of kitchen accessories and gourmet condiments perfect for giving gift.  Add to that, they are hosting a Sweet Pop Up Shop with delish items from Lisa Lou’s Chocolate Bar until December 24th.  If you know a true cheese lover, take note of their upcoming Wine & Cheese Tasting classes in the New Year.

Who does not love to receive great food at Christmas?  There is such an array of delectable food items in store at Gourmet Warehouse whether for entertaining over the holidays or gift giving.  You can find just about everything here whether it’s small appliances, knives, condiments, baking items or maybe a gift certificate for an upcoming cooking class. Bird On A Wire Creations is located near Kingsway on Main Street and features a host of new as well as established Canadian artists. They have an amazing selection of one-of-a-kind items.    If you missed artisan markets and craft fairs, you will find many of local makers in this store.  They are are open 10:00 am to 7:00 pm this week.

Giving Gifts Co., 4570 Main Street

Giving Gifts is a unique concept store made up of 5 rooms with items from over 70 local artists and small businesses in one lovely boutique shop.  The items are also eco-friendly and fair trade made. This store also has a great selection of gifts for kids and toddlers.

Little Mountain Pop Up Shop, 4386 Main Street

The Little Mountain Pop Up Shop is currently hosting ‘Holid-eh!’ featuring over 20 Canadian makers.  A few participants include Fox & Fancy, Bar Skin Bar, True North Trading Post and more.  They are open for holiday shopping until December 24th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and for those last minute shoppers, December 24th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Olive & Wild, 4391 Main Street

If you are looking for some beautiful unique home décor items for gift giving this year, we recommend checking out Olive & Wild. Lots of beautiful items in store sourced locally and globally.

Second Nature Home, 3565 Commercial Street

Second Nature Home is great little shop just steps away from the Commercial Street Café in a great little stretch of road nestled next to the Toso Wood Gallery.  It boasts an array of eco-friendly items from Canadian artisans many of them local.  There is a wide selection of products and we might add great knowledgeable service. This week, they are open Monday to Saturday from 10:30 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday, December 24th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

Doctor Vigari Gallery, 1816 Commercial Drive

Doctor Vigari on The Drive boasts quite a collection of art from BC and Canadian artists whether you are looking for large or small pieces, there’s lots of choose from including tiles, prints, jewellery, sculptures, furniture, ceramics and much more.  Also framing is available in store to finish off that perfect piece of art whether purchased in store or elsewhere.
