Cooking Classes Around East Van This Fall

Now that cooler temperatures are here, it’s time to get cozy with some great food.  We love spending time at cooking classes learning new dishes this time of year. We have been scouting around and have found a great selection of classes and have set out our favourites below. Whether you are a beginner, seasoned cook or vegan cook, we hope you’ll find something that piques your interest and taste buds.

Modern Peruvian – Gourmet Warehouse – November 16, 2017

Chef Shelome Bouvette hosts this demonstration cooking class at Gourmet Warehouse November 16th from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm. You will learn how to make some classic Peruvian dishes with a West Coast modern twist.  Cost is $79 and yes, you get to eat what’s made plus shop in store the day of your class with a 10% discount. Easy Every Day French Dinner – Kensington Community Centre – October 26, 2017

Chef Valentine of Tartine Maple will be conducting this demonstration cooking class at the Kensington Community Centre on Thursday, October 26th.  The cost is $60 and registration is through the City of Vancouver.  In this class you will learn to make an easy French dinner that you can cook for guests or that special someone or for yourself, you’re worth it. In this class you will learn to make:

•“Salade Lyonnaise” with soft boiled egg and warm bacon
•Herb Crusted Salmon
•Chocolate Mousse

Vegan Cheesemaking – Italian Cultural Centre – October 12, 19, & 26, 2017

Chef Karen McAthy, founder of Blue Heron and author of The Art of Plant-Based Cheesemaking, leads this 3 part series vegan cheesemaking class being held at the Italian Cultural Centre beginning October 12th. Cost is $160 for a series of 3 sessions   You will learn how to make cultured fresh vegan cheese. Note, there’s homework for this class, so bring a notebook and be prepared to learn.  To register, visit the Italian Cultural Centre. Some of what you will be learning includes:

• About lacto-fermentation and culturing (differences, how it works, etc.)
• The role of microbes in creating flavor and texture in plant-based cheesemaking
• The difference between cultured and non-cultured plant-based cheeses
• How to start and grow some key plant-based lactic acid cultures safe for use at home
• How to choose a plant based medium for cheese making
• Basic aging method for at home plant-based cheesemaking

Holiday Side Dishes – Gourmet Warehouse – November 26, 2017

If you have your main dishes down cold, but want to add some new side dishes to your holiday menu, Caren McSherry, owner of the Gourmet Warehouse is leading this demonstration cooking class on Sunday, November 26th. Cost is $79 and you will learn some delish dishes from Caren’s new cookbook “Starters, Salads & Sexy Sides”:

•Roasted butternut squash with crispy halloumi cubes
•Whole roasted cauliflower
•Jacket roasted sweet potato with crispy chorizo and creamy herbed feta
•Whipped rutabaga with crispy shallots
•Wild and mixed mushroom saute

Upcoming Foodie Events In East Vancouver

We love food and checking out foodie events in and around East Vancouver. Honestly, there are a swack of them to choose from this summer and into the fall months.  Some from past experience we’ve learnt do sell out quickly. Thus, if there is something that’s up your alley, we recommend grabbing tickets sooner vs. later.  Whether you like pie, cookbooks, BBQ, wine, cocktails or cheese, we think there’s something for everyone.

Sushi Workshop – Gourmet Warehouse – September 23, 2017

If you wish to learn how to make your own sushi, you may wish to check out the workshop being offered at Gourmet Warehouse on September 23rd.   Seasoned pro Chef Cindy Low will teach you how to make sushi in this hands on class. She will cover it all, how to make sushi rice, mix wasabi, prepare a variety of fillings and will cover rolls, cones and a variety of other shapes.  She will even give you tips on how to host your own do-it-yourself sushi party.  Workshop runs from 11:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 23rd. September – November 2017: Cheese & Wine Tasting – les amis du fromage

 The fine folks at les amis du fromage have a great line of cheese & wine tasting classes starting September 12th with Wine & Cheese 101. More classes follow in September featuring cheese from Italy, France and Quebec. Price runs $65 – 70 per person per class and includes wine with your cheese tasting. Although the dates seem a little ways off, these classes do sell out.  To purchase your ticket(s), visit les amis du fromage. August – September 2017: Summer Pie Workshops – The Pie Shoppe

We can personally speak to the pie making talents of the French sisters that created this shop. These two sisters have some serious pie making experience under their belts and we have to say make some pretty dam fine pie.  They are teaching a number of workshops this summer if wish to master the art of pie making. If you prefer to start with pastry fundamentals, they have a workshop dedicated solely to that on September 13th. To register for their workshops, visit The Pie Shoppe.

October 5, 2017: Book Launch ‘Starters, Salads & Sexy Sides’ by Caren McSherry – Gourmet Warehouse

Caren McSherry, chef and owner of the Gourmet Warehouse, has written a cookbook ‘Starters, Salads and Sexy Sides’. They are hosting a book launch on ThursdSexyStarters&SidesKarenMcSherryay, October 5th which includes a cast of local culinary talent such as Scott Jaeger from The Pear Tree, Robert Clark from The Fish Counter, Trevor Bird from the Fable Kitchen to name a few.  Tickets for the evening event are $50 and include a copy of Caren’s new cookbook. Chocolate Challenge Returns To The Gourmet Warehouse April 27, 2017

image descriptionIf you love chocolate, the Gourmet Warehouse is the place to be on Thursday, April 27th. They are  once again hosting the very delish Chocolate Challenge. This event pits 8 chocolatiers against each other to create something decadent with chocolate.  You have the opportunity to taste and vote who wins top prize for the best creation. In addition to chocolate, your ticket includes tastings from Earnest Ice Cream, The Preservatory, Stumptown Coffee, Tacomio, Tartine Tarts, Terra Breads, and Yorshire Tea.  Best part of all 100% of ticket sales, silent and live auction proceeds will go to the Strathcona Backpack Program, Project Chef and the Vancouver Firefighters `Snacks for Kids` Program. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased directly from Gourmet Warehouse. Event gets under way at 6:30 pm.  Come out and support this fun evening for 3 great local causes.

We recently did just that with a class led by Caren McSherry featuring holiday appetizers. Not only do you get to taste everything you make, but you leave with amazing recipes and great tips from an expert. PHO-Fabulous – Thursday, March 23rd 6:00 pm ($65)

You are invited to join Chef Thompson Tran to learn the essential techniques for making authentic Pho (PH-UH) broth.  In this cool weather, there is nothing like an aromatic bowl of Pho to warm you up.  The menu Chef Tran has lined up for this class includes:

•  GOI DU-DU VA THIT HEO THOM, Green papaya and cabbage salad prawn and pork
•  PHO BO DAC BIET, Authentic South Vietnamese Pho
•  BANH LOT, a Chestnut Jelly in Ginger Syrup

Asian Bistro – Saturday, March 25th 11:00 am ($65) SOLD OUT

Chef Cindy Low teaches you how to make casual Asian food. Best of all, easy and fast dishes including potstickers, bao (filled steamed buns), Asian sticky chicken and a fav among many we know spicy green beans finished off with mango coconut ice cream.

• Potstickers – Class pork and vegetable dumpling, pan-friend with dipping sauce
• Asian turkey ragu bao – Asian Sloppy Joes in steamed buns

Sunday Supper: France – Saturday April 8th 11:00 am ($69)

If you want to invite the family or friends for Sunday Supper with a French twist, Chef Cindy Low will teach you the ins and outs of putting on a casually elegant French dinner. Chef Low will teach you how to make a classic lamb stew, an easy spinach and strawberry salad, cherry clafouti and more. Menu for this upcoming class includes:

• Tartine with saute mushrooms in a creamy tarragon sauce

• Spinach salad with fresh strawberries, toasted almonds, raspberry vinaigrette

• Lamb navarin printainere – class lamb stew with spring vegetables

• Roast potatoes with rosemary and sea salt

• Cherry clafouti – baked custard with cherries

Anna Olson Book Signing At Gourmet Warehouse November 1st

If you love Anna Olson, you may wish to head down to Gourmet Warehouse on November 1st. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, Anna Olson is a professionally trained pastry chef among many other talents. She hosts Bake With Anna Olson on the Food Network and has written a new cookbook Bake With Anna Olson which has more than 125 recipes for booked goods from her popular Food Network Canada show.  On November 1st, you will have the opportunity to obtain a signed copy of her newest cookbook and meet Anna while sipping on a glass of wine or prosecco and nibbling on some sweet treats.  Tickets for this event are $45 and include a signed copy of her new cookbook. The event takes place at Gourmet Warehouse from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Tickets are available online and are non-refundable, but if you aren’t able to make it, you can send someone in your place.

Sushi Workshop – Saturday, September 17th 11:00 am ($69) SOLD OUT

In this hands-on class, Chef Cindy Low is going to teach you how to make sushi.  You will learn to make vinegared sushi rice, how to mix wasabi, how to prepare a variety of fillings including seafood, vegetarian, tofu and eggs.  As well, Chef Low will teach how to make sushi rolls, cones and a variety of shapes as well as tips on how to host your own ‘do it yourself’ sushi party.  Some of the sushi you will learn to make include:

• California rolls (crab, avocado, cucumber, rolled “inside out”)
• Futomaki (thick roll with vegetables, omelet, Japanese pickled vegetables)
• Hoso maki (thin rolls, with various fillings, such as salmon, tuna, cucumber)
• Inari sushi (stuffed tofu pouches)
• Temaki (cones, with various fillings)
• Nigiri sushi (rice with a sliced topping)
• Gunkan sushi (rice wrapped with seaweed with various fillings)
• Onigiri (rice triangles)
• Miso soup with tofu

Taco Night– Saturday, September 24th 11:00 am ($65)

In this demonstration cooking class, Chef Cindy Low is going to teach you three different ways to make very tasty tacos. She will also teach you how to make homemade salsa and Mexican brownies. These really are simple the dishes to make, so for the novice wishing to learn a few skills, you won’t be disappointed.  Some of the delicious dishes you will learn to make include:

• Classic Tex-Mex tacos – crispy taco shell with ground beef, tomatoes,
cheese, lettuce, sour cream, avocado
• Chicken fajitas – marinated chicken breast with bell peppers and onions wrapped
in a wheat tortilla
• Salmon tacos with papaya salsa, soft corn tortilla
• Easiest ever homemade salsa, served with tortilla chips
• Mexican brownies

 Flavours of Vietnam – Sunday, September 25th 11:00 am ($65)

In this demonstration cooking class, Thompson Tran is going to teach you how to make classic Vietnamese dishes. He will focus on family budgets, what’s local and in season all in the pursuit of our favourite thing, delicious food  As always, you are encouraged to come hungry, you will be eating the items made in class. Thompson has chosen three Vietnamese dishes that are simple, inexpensive quick and healthy. What you will learn to make includes:

• Appetizer: “CHA GOI, NUOC MAM PHA” (Gluten free spring rolls & Nuoc Cham)
• Main: “Ca KHO TO, COM VA SU XAO TOI” (Caramelized tilapia with scented
jasmine rice and garlic chayote)
• Dessert: “CHE XOI NUOC” (Mochi dumplings in coconut ginger syrup).

Of course, there is always shopping after the cooking class as participants are offered a 10% discount for purchases made the day of your class. For a full line up of all the classes Gourmet Warehouse is offering visit Cooking Classes. Below we have set out a sampling of some of their upcoming classes.

 Flavours of Vietnam – Saturday, May 28th 11:00 am ($65) SOLD OUT

In this demonstration cooking class, Chef Cindy Low is going to teach you all about Vietnamese cuisine which she says is one of Asia’s best kept secrets.   She will focus on fresh Asian herbs and vegetables which makes for light and healthy meals. Chef Low will teach you how to make homemade chicken broth which is the base for Vietnamese pho. You will also learn to make salad rolls, shaking beef with arugula and Vietnamese coffee ice cream.   As always, you are encouraged to come hungry, you will be eating the items made in class and this is a popular one.  What you will learn to make includes:

Vietnamese salad rolls with prawns, served with a
hoi sin and peanut dipping sauce
Shaking beef with arugula, served banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) style
Chicken pho – classic Vietnamese soup with rice noodles in a homemade
chicken broth, fresh Asian herbs, bean sprouts
Homemade Vietnamese carrot and daikon pickles
Vietnamese coffee ice cream

Cake Pops – Sunday, June 26th 11:00 am ($65) SOLD OUT

You are invited to this hands-on-class with in-house baker, Rick Gaspard.  He will demonstrate how easy it is to make Cake Pops.  You will learn all the tips on how to shape them, dip them and roll and decorate them. Cake pops are fun variation and perfect for a wedding favours, birthday treats and make a great decorative flair at wedding or baby showers. As this is a hands-on-class, you are asked to bring an apron as well as a container to bring home your freshly created cake pops.

Greek Night– Saturday, June 18th 11:00 am ($65) NEWLY ADDED

In this demonstration cooking class, Chef Cindy Low is going to teach you not only about the distinctive flavours of Greek dishes, but how truly simple the dishes are to make.  Cindy will also discuss the Mediterranean diet which is considered one of the healthiest in the world.  Some of the delicious dishes you will learn to make include:

Horiataki Salata (Greek salad) with tomatoes, cucumber, feta, olives,
green pepper, oregano and extra virgin olive oil
Prawns Saganaki – prawns baked with tomatoes and feta
Chicken Souvlaki – tender cubes of chicken breast, marinated and grilled to perfection
Roasted Lemon Potatoes
Tzatziki – yogurt and cucumber dip
Baklava “Bites” – classic Greek dessert of nuts, honey, filo pastry
