Are you interested in tackling some DIY yourself projects for home, but don’t have the space? In case you haven’t heard, The Wood Shop, features some great one day do-it-yourself workshops. They are currently offering four workshops. You can choose to make a dining table, headboard, storage trunk or a planter box. The Wood Shop provides the space and the tools for the project you wish to tackle. Each workshop is led by an experienced Wood Working Educator in a professional wood working shop. You will learn how to use wood working tools and learn some introductory fabrication and finishing concepts. When they aren’t teaching classes, the Wood Shop crafts one-of-a-kind furniture and home décor items out of reclaimed wood. Cost of each class varies depending on what you choose to make, but they are offering a variety of dates. Workshops take place at 251 Southern Creek in the False Creek Flats near Main Street and Terminal Avenue. Heads up, the last time we featured these classes, they filled up quickly. Should you wish to tackle one of their projects, we recommend registering early. Note, gift certificates are available should you wish to give an early Father’s Day present For more information or to register, visit their website at The Wood Shop.

Hot Glass Cold Beer Pairs Beer Tasting With Glassblowing October 29th
24 Oct
You are invited to a Hot, Haunted & Hoppy Halloween event being held at the Terminal City Glass Co-Op. Terminal City Glass Co-op is Canada’s first and only nonprofit glass arts co-op. They offer courses in glassblowing, flameworking, beadmaking and sandblasting to everyone and provide access to glassmaking equipment as well as resources for the development of emerging and established glass artists. The event on October 29th is a fundraiser to help support the community building activities at the Co-op which includes artist slide shows, open houses and other events that promote glass as an art form. Artists will demonstrate how to create pumpkins from molten glass, and will also blow glass into an actual hollowed-out pumpkin and create a fire-breathing glass jack-o-lantern. The event happens at their studios located at 1191 Parker Street on Saturday, October 29th from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. They will be hosting a glassblowing workshop and a beer tasting which we presume will go in that order, or well things could get a little dangerous, just saying. Tickets for these evening of art, fun and beer are $55 with tickets available online from TerminalCityGlass.com.

Learn To Make The Perfect Pie With The Pie Shoppe
19 Jul
In case you hadn’t heard the news, Grandview Woodlands has a delicious new spot coming in the next few weeks. The second location of The Pie Shoppe will be situated next to Bistro Wagon Rouge at 1875 Powell Street. This delicious shop is the work of two sisters, Stephanie and Andrea French. They opened their first store in Chinatown in all of 300 square feet just around the corner from The Union, Crackle Crème and a few other great spots. So now they have a much bigger space and along with serving great pie and coffee, they are offering to teach you how to make the perfect pie. Having done a fair bit of baking, I’ve found pie ‘relatively’ easy to make, but the key (for me) is the pie crust and getting it just right. Here, Stephanie and Andrea will help you master flour and butter what works, what doesn’t. After the class, you will be able to use all that beautiful summer or fall fruit and make some amazing pies. We have set out below some of their upcoming classes. Note, there is class size limit of 12 for all classes. You will be provided with all the things you need for the class including aprons, rolling pins, pie plate and we hear some good eats. Added note, for those that have issues with gluten, this facility is not gluten free.
Now, for those that don’t want to make pie just eat it, I expect they will have a pretty delish selection on hand which will change with what’s in season. Having said this, some of the delicious names that could be on hand include Raspberry Rhubarb, Blueberry Lemon Streusel, Walnut & Bourbon, Salted Honey or Salted Chocolate Peanut Butter Chess. Of course, if you prefer classic Peach Pie, they just might have that as well. If you can’t wait for the opening of their Powell Street location, you can visit them Tuesdays to Sundays 11:00 am to whenever they sell out at their Chinatown location at 721 Gore Street. If you wish to book a baking class, give them a call at 604.338.6646 or drop them an email.

At the end of the night, you get to leave with a perfect pie, made by you, a booklet of recipes and tips.
Stone Fruit Pie Making – August 28th 3:00 pm– 6:00 pm ($75)
For this afternoon pie making workshop, The Pie Ladies will teach you how to make delicious fruit pies using Okanagan summer fruits. They will be sourcing out local and organic ingredients for this class. For this class as well, you can expect to walk away with great pie, new recipes and maybe some new friends to share your pie with.
Apple Pie Workshop – November 6th 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm ($65)
You are invited to another great afternoon of pie making where the Pie Ladies will talk apples meaning which are best for pies. They will also discuss sugars, starches and creating the perfect flaky crust (butter vs. shortening). You will also learn how to make those beautiful decorative edges and tops with pie dough. Again, they will be sourcing out local and organic ingredients, serving snacks and drinks while those apple pies bake. Of course, you will leaving class with your perfect apple pie.
Reminder, there is a class limit size of 12 per class. To register, we encourage you to contact the The Pie Shoppe directly or pop in once their new location on Powell Street opens. We recently stopped in at Bird On A Wire Creations in Mount Pleasant. If you don’t know the store, it is a great artisanal gift shop located at 2535 Main Street near Broadway. We noted a few personal favourite artisans in store, but what was hard to miss was a colourful display of flowers in the corner of the store which we learnt was Bouquets by Mary. On some Saturdays, you will find Mary Kelava hosting a small Pop Up Shop with stunning bouquets available for very reasonable prices. The bouquets we saw featured were $25 and beautiful. What we also learnt is that Mary will be conducting some floral workshops at Bird On A Wire Creations in June. We’ve set out the two upcoming workshops below:

Have a wedding come up? Well these would be a great idea for the bride to be whether for the actual day or for her wedding shower. On June 11th, learn how to make a floral crown. Everything will be provided for you. Cost of this class is also $55 and also runs from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
If you are interested in the Floral Pop Up shops and picking up some stunning flowers, note Mary is not in store every Saturday and we hear she won’t be there over the upcoming long weekend, but she will be back on May 28th.
Workshop – Rain Water Harvesting & Permaculture April 9 & 10
29 Mar
Last summer was certainly an eye opener for many of us living in Vancouver. With warmer weather and less rain, it had quite the impact on the green space we’ve come to love and call home. So this 2 day permaculture workshop at Homestead Junction coming April 9th and 10th caught our eye. For those unfamiliar with the term permaculture, it means the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient. The upcoming workshops will be led by Kim Del Valle Garcia of the Nettle’s Guild. Kim will touch on the causes of drought in our region, climate change and how it affects us globally as well as locally and its effects on our ecosystems. You will learn techniques found in permaculture to create resilient landscapes that are insulated from weather extremes. The 2 day workshop will cover rain water harvesting and soil building within an urban environment. You will create a rainwater harvesting system and a hugelkulture bed at Briarpatch Community Garden. The cost of the 2 day workshop is $110 and runs from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm on April 9th and 10th. To register, visit Homestead Junction.
