New Culinary Walking Tour: Main Street Restaurant and Cocktail Tour
13 MayThe ladies from Off The Eaten Track Tours launch a new culinary walking tour on Thursday, May 16th. It is called the Main Street Restaurant and Cocktail Tour. This new tour hopes to capitalize on all the great buzz this neighbourhood has been generating with great restaurants, pubs, boutiques, antique and coffee shops. Co-owner, Bonnie Todd, says “This is a neighbourhood that is beloved by locals and has such a diverse and lively dining scene yet it is rarely visited by tourists. We are shaking things up and showing visitors there is more to Vancouver than just the downtown core.”
This new tour is a progressive dinner that involves five courses and two alcoholic beverages. The tour starts at Trafiq Café for a savoury appetizer, a glass of wine, and a private tour of their amazing bakery where they make all of their pastries and cakes from scratch. Then the tour heads to Trilussa for some very authentic Roman style pizza. The next stop is an entrée of fresh Pacific Northwest cuisine at a neighbourhood classic, Locus Restaurant & Lounge. Next up is a cheeky cocktail at the newly opened Shameful Tiki, then the tour finishes at Sweet Revenge for some sinful deserts.

Judy Kenzie – Changing the World, One Seed At A Time
8 MayThere is a very remarkable woman living in our midst in the Strathcona area. Her name is Judy Kenzie. What makes her so remarkable you might ask? Well this woman has her hands in a few pots shall we say, literally and figuratively.
Judy Kenzie is an avid gardener and has lived in Strathcona since 2002. Judy saw a need for sustainable food resources in the community, but her aim is not to just give food handouts. She wishes to show people how to grow food for themselves and just how easy it is. To drive this point home, again literally and figuratively, Judy has a Truck Farm. It is a 1993 Mazda B2600 pick up truck with the license plate NON-GMO and truckfarm.ca painted on the back panel. In the truck bed, you will find a living, growing vegetable garden. This truck gathers a crowd and photographs wherever it goes.
One year ago, Judy Kenzie started Strathcona 1890 Urban Seed Collections. Judy has packaged non-genetically modified seeds for herbs, vegetables and edible flowers with a primary focus on open-pollinated, heirloom seeds. Her packaging has a very unique vintage feel created by combining her own artwork with a variety of botanicals from the 16th through 18th centuries to create one-of-a-kind imagery. Judy travels with her seeds to various elementary schools, day care and community centers teaching children to grow their own vegetables. Did I mention she does most of this for free.
Judy sells her seeds at various stores through out the Lower Mainland as well as on line. Her uniquely themed seed collections run the gamut from kid friendly collections with dwarf sunflower seeds, rainbow carrots, runner bean seeds to a Quick & Dirty collection comprising of faster growing varieties. There is even an Edible Flowers collection that comes with a recipe for adding edible flowers to cheese with a wine glaze.
The aim is for Strathcona 1890 to be a sustainable business venture and provide bridging jobs for people on social assistance, single moms and people with disabilities who can work for only a few hours at a time. When Judy isn’t busy teaching armies of children how to garden, she is nurturing seedlings for the Arms Open Wide Project at the Ray Cam Community Centre. This is a collaborative effort involving a number of organizations that will have seniors and children planting, maintaining and harvesting a vertical garden.
If you are interested in purchasing seeds from Judy herself, you are in luck. Judy will be participating in a number of events over the coming weeks where the Truck Farm will be making an appearance. One such appearance will be the 18th Annual Stone Soup Festival at the Britannia Community Centre this Saturday, May 11th which theme just happens to be urban agriculture. The Truck Farm and Judy will then head over to the the Great Canadian Craft Spring Fling for May 12th. Also for most of May, you will find the Truck Farm at the Sustainability Expo at Science World for Earth Month. Judy herself will be selling her heirloom seeds at various farmers markets around the Lower Mainland. Watch her Facebook Page for details of where she will be next.

What is remarkable is that, apart from a small Greenest City grant which covers about 10%, Judy pays for the Truck Farm out of her own pocket. The gas, the repairs as well as volunteering her time and resources to teach a new generation how to feed themselves. Thus, she has now reached out for assistance through crowdfunding. If you are unfamiliar with the term, Wikipedia defines it as: “… the collective effort of individuals who network and pool their money, usually via the internet to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations.” If you wish to support Judy in her efforts, you can contribute by going to Indiegogo.com.
Judy is changing the world one seed at a time. Now that’s remarkable.

Gourmet Warehouse Customer Appreciation Day Saturday, May 4th
3 MayThere are two places in this city, I could get lost in for hours. The first would be any library or bookstore, the second is Gourmet Warehouse. I love good food, making it, eating it, or just thinking about making or eating it. Gourmet Warehouse has pretty much everything a cook, baker or entertainer could want or need. There is the cook ware, the bake ware, sauces, snacks, prepared foods, frozen foods, small appliances, gift ware, aprons, cookbooks, candles, every utensil you could imagine and wine glasses. And of course storage containers to help you organize your kitchen so you can find what you need when you need it! This is just the short list.
So if there is anything you want or need, this Saturday, May 4th is the day to head down to Gourmet Warehouse, 1340 East Hastings Street, for their Customer Appreciation Day. Everything in the store is 10% off from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The first 120 customers to make a purchase will receive a free Epicurean Cutting Board. There will also be a draw for a SodaStream machine. Like most Saturdays in the store, there will be delectable goodies for tasting. Yum!
Keep Vancouver Spectacular – Keep Your Neighbourhood Green & Clean
2 MayEvery May, the City of Vancouver, puts on a city-wide clean up campaign called “Keep Vancouver Spectacular” from May 1st – May 31st. This initiative began in 1996 and was a co-orindated effort between the City of Vancouver, Tourism Vancouver and Oceans Blue Foundation. It has evolved with a variety of sponsors over the years. People get together individually or in groups to clean up their neighbourhood streets, lanes, parks and shorelines. The City of Vancouver supplies the tools which include:
• Garbage bags
• Gloves, cleanup tools (thongs)
• Free pickup of litter collected
As a past Block Captain there is satisfaction in everything looking green and clean in your neighbourhood. It is amazing how much garbage can be picked up with a small group of people. It is rather simple if you are the one doing the organizing. You simply go online fill out the registration form. After that, the City delivers you the requested items. Enlist a few volunteers. Designate a location that everyone in your group returns the garbage to. The time commitment is what you make it, but generally 1 to 2 hours is the average. If neighbours need a little encouragement to participate, truth be told, I have enticed a few neighbours with fresh coffee and donuts.
If you are not an organizer, but wish to volunteer, many neighbourhoods are now looking for volunteers for their clean up campaigns such as South Hill Business Association (along Fraser Street between 41st and 50th Avenues) South Hill BIA is holding their annual clean up this Saturday, May 4th from 10:00 a.m. – Noon. The Victoria Drive Business Improvement Association is holding their clean up campaign on Sunday, June 23, 2013 and to boot, they will be providing lunch. For more details or to volunteer, call T: 604-323-2301 or email vdbia@telus.net.
In 2012, 16,400 volunteers in 180 groups came together to fill more than 6,000 bags with litter. Now that’s spectacular!
