The Big List of Holiday Markets In East Van 2021

It’s that time of year again where the opportunities to shop local are abundant and in light of the pandemic, more important than ever for our local economy. Although there are some markets that have been cancelled this year due the pandemic, there are still many going ahead. We encourage you to stop by those that are proceeding and show your support. Whether you are shopping for Christmas, a birthday or yourself, there are so many opportunities to support your local community.

When you buy from a local maker, you’re supporting your neighbor next door, your co-worker working full-time and holding down a side gig, moms carving out some extra income while still being home with their families. All have created a business doing something they love and are passionate about.  We are 100% behind supporting those local dreamers and makers. Also, what is making the rounds on social media is that buying local is better for the environment. Items at markets are not being shipped in containers lost at sea, not to mention less packaging involved as a result of not travelling long distances. To make it easy to shop local, we have again created a list of Holiday Markets In East Van for 2021.   We hope you will show your support for local this holiday season.

Made In The 604 At The Heritage Hall October 24th

Made In The 604 is back at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street, with a Pop Up Market for the first time in almost 2 years. Sunday, October 24th the Heritage Hall is transformed again into a space that showcases handmade items produced by local makers, creatives and the small business community. The event gets under way at 11:00 am and all Covid protocols will be in place including vaccine passports and masking to keep things safe for everyone. Admission is by donation. There are not quite as many of these markets this year as in past years, but it a great opportunity to get a jump on your Christmas shopping.

The Britannia Plaza Market Continues Until October 21st

After a successful run this summer, the Britannia Plaza Market which is located outside of the Britannia Community Centre and near the Britannia Library, continues until October 21st. You are invited to stop by this Saturday, September 11th from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm and check out some local producers, artists and makers. The outdoor markets will then continue on Thursdays ONLY from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm until October 21st. Stop by support local artists, makers and growers.

Britannia Plaza Outdoor Market This Summer

The Britannia Plaza Market outside of the Britannia Community Centre and Britannia Library is back this summer. For the months of July and August, you can stop by on Thursdays between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm to pick up some fresh produce, bread, eggs and baked goods. We hear Fractal Farms will be a regular staple on hand for Thursday’s market. On Saturdays, stop by between Noon and 4:00 pm to check out a variety of offerings from local artists and makers. The markets we understand will be held weekly throughout the summer months. We invite you to stop by and support your local artists, makers and growers.

Pandemic Pivot: Loved & Local New Online Shop

2020 was a year of challenge and change for many and 2021 continues on that same vein.   The pandemic has many people pivoting to earn an income from a new source. Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Franzen who did a complete 360 and created Loved & Local.  Jenn was a self-employment travel agent for 15 years. As we all know, with the current travel restrictions, planning trips isn’t first and foremost on people’s mind nor will it be for some time. So Jenn pivoted and created Loved & Local.

Loved & Local is an online store that features gently used clothing and accessories for women, men and children.  Loved & Local also carries items from local artisans including Oona Clothing,  Mosaic Earrings, beeswax food wraps by Etta & Olive, candles by Grain & Honey and knitted toques by Littlee Lambs Boutique to name a few.

Loved & Local carries a wide range of items and yes they deliver!  They offer free delivery on orders over $20 within a 10 km radius of Loved & Local which is located in Hastings Sunrise. If you are interested in trying on a specific item, feel free to reach out to them directly.   They have also just added a weekly auction on Facebook and Instagram that runs from Thursday to Sunday with a starting bid of $1.00. For those wishing to give back to charity in an easy way, Loved & Local supports some local charitable endeavours including Victory House Mental Health Facility. They are currently selling Valentine’s Day cards made by residents. 100% of the sale proceeds go back to Victory House.

Buy Local This Holiday Season

We don’t have to tell you it’s been a rough year for small business. On recently updating our Places We Love listing, we were saddened to remove some favourite spots no longer in business like Doctor Vigari Gallery and The Flower Box. These were two long time staples on Commercial Drive. As you’ve likely heard, it’s important to shop local this holiday season if you wish to see these businesses on the other side of the pandemic. We have always been passionate about supporting our local business community and wish to remind folks these local businesses are the ones that provide donations for your school fundraisers, sports clubs and other community events. Now they need YOU.

Local business woman and social entrepreneur, Elizabeth McKitrick, who owns Second Nature Home in Cedar Cottage, was recently featured on CTV News discussing her thoughts on shopping local. McKitrick said she’s hoping people “just don’t go to Amazon.” “It’s like a black hole, really, for cash,” she said. “It’s going into Jeff Bezo’s pocket. He’s the wealthiest person in the world, and I just think, ‘Why?’ We have other ways of helping out communities.” And if you missed the recent CBC Marketplace episode showing where all your Amazon returns go, you may wish to enlighten yourself.

When gift shopping this holiday season, you have the opportunity to make a difference and support those makers and creators living among us. They are those micro businesses, side gigs and entrepreneurs trying to stay afloat and stores like McKitrick’s support these businesses. So instead of lining the pockets of the richest man in the world, how about lining the pocket of your neighbour down the street or across town?

To give you a starting point, we’ve set out a few of our favourite stores for shopping local in East Van. One of the many reasons we likes these stores is because they all support other local artisans, makers and small business.  So visit them in person or online and see what items they have that might make that perfect gift for someone special this holiday season.

Second Nature Home

Second Nature Home is a home décor boutique located at 3565 Commercial Street in Cedar Cottage.  The store has a wide range of items outside of home décor including  jewellery, gifts for the foodie in your life, something cute for the new baby or new mom and much more. They are open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sundays from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. They will also be open till 8:00 on Wednesday in December.

Plenty + Spare

Plenty + Spare is located at 2168 East Hasting Street. It’s easy to miss by the smells of their neighbour Delish Gluten Free Bakery which can draw you in by your nose literally, but do stop into Plenty + Spare. They create an array of beautiful handmade bath and beauty products and stock a number of other items perfect for gift giving. Added bonus, they’ve just updated their website for online shopping and offer store pick up as well as free shipping for orders over $60.

Giving Gifts

Giving Gifts is a beautiful space located at 4570 Main Street. The store tucked between 30th & 29th Avenue is made of up 5 rooms packed with items from over 100 local as well as fair trade artists from around the world.  It is a gift giving boutique so you will easily be able to pick up a few gifts for just about any age. They are open Monday to Saturday from Noon to 6:00 pm and Sundays Noon to 5:00 pm.

Jackson’s General Store

Jackson’s General Store located at 1490 Kingsway (at Dumfries) near Knight Street. This space is the epitome of cool with a distinct retro vibe. Store owner, Mike Jackson, has created an eclectic mix of unique items in store which features clothing, gourmet food, books and if you are looking for a candy fix that is a blast from the past, this is your spot. Jackson’s General Store has also created some Care Boxes which support local brands and can be delivered to your door. Jackson’s General Store is open Monday to Saturday 11:00 am to 5:30 pm and Sundays 12:00 to 5:00 pm.

The Coast Goods

The Coast Goods has just opened their doors in the last couple of months. They are located at 1302 Victoria Drive. This is great neighbourhood shop that focuses ethically sourced home decor and giftware again supporting our local independent artisans. They are open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays. Be sure to check them out and give them a follows on Instagram.

Olive & Wild

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention this beautiful shop located at 4391 Main Street. They have an amazing array of home decor items and lots of great things on hand for gift giving. They feature local as well as international artists. Olive & Wild is open 7 days a week.

For every $100 you spend with a local business, $46 is re-circulated back into the BC economy (vs $18 for multi nationals). Small business re-circulates 2.6 times more revenue in the local economy as do chains.

Make It! Vancouver – PNE Forum – December 11-15

The biggest handmade market is now at the PNE Forum until Sunday, December 15th.  Expect to find over 250 makers with a wide variety of items including food, clothing, accessories, home décor, gourmet goodies, art, items for babies and kids and a whole lot more.  We are sure you can get a lot of your Christmas shopping done under this one roof.  Admission is $7 at the door, or purchase online through Showpass and save $3.

Crafty Affaire – Croatian Cultural Centre – December 14 & 15

If you are wanting a less crowded shopping experience than Make It!, we encourage you to check out Crafty Affaire at the Croatian Cultural Centre, 3250 Commercial Drive. This one is a fav market, it’s a good sized and well curated market with a variety of  vendors. Market happens 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Admission is by donation.

Holiday At The Elbow Room Café – The Cultch – Until December 29

Holiday at the Elbow Room Café is now on at The Cultch until December 29th. This is a new Cultch holiday tradition inspired by Vancouver’s most iconic café. Expect a hilarious and heartwarming tribute to the long standing café known for slinging sarcasm and insults right along with its food. The show features a cast of characters snowed in at the iconic café. Expect a night of song, dance and laughter.  Tickets are available online at The Cultch.

A Very Swingin’ Christmas – Hungarian Hall – December 15

If you love the sound of big band music and Frank Sinatra, you will want to check out A Very Swingin’ Christmas happening at the Hungarian Hall at Kingsway and Fraser this Sunday night. Tickets are $35 until December 13th after which they are $45.  To purchase your ticket in advance, visit Eventbrite. If you wish to purchase your ticket at the door, note it’s cash only.

Aurora Winter Festival – Hastings Park/PNE – Until January 5, 2020

The Aurora Winter Festival continues at Hastings Park/PNE with an array of indoor and outdoor activities, Christmas Market, games, rides.  This is an all ages event. For tickets, visit Ticketleader.

Fado: The Saddest Music in The World – Firehall Arts Centre – Until December 14

It’s the last weekend to catch this play featuring Fado music with origins going back to the early 1800s in Lisbon, Portugal. The show happens at the Firehall Arts Centre.  If you haven’t experienced it, we invite you to check it out. For tickets, visit Firehall Arts Centre.

East Van Panto: Pinocchio – The York – On Now Until January 5, 2020

Our favourite holiday tradition is now on at the York Theatre until January 5th.  Take in this fun and entertaining show that is fun for all ages. Just remember if you are in the front row, you might become part of the production. This year’s panto is Pinocchio and touches on some unique aspects in East Van, such as the mysterious Beckwoman and the coffee wars on The Drive for starters. Tickets for the East Van Panto Pinocchio start at $26 for children 16 and under. Family packs are available for $145. To get your tickets, visit The Cultch.

Do you love cartoons? Miss those Saturday morning cartoons you used to watch as a kid. Do you know Storm Crow Tavern offers cartoons Saturday morning from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm whilst you enjoy breakfast/brunch?

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, no cover.

Final Shiny Fuzzy Muddy Happens Collective Happens December 14 & 15 At The Heritage Hall

ShinyFuzzyMuddyDec2019.jpgThis weekend you are invited to check out Shiny Fuzzy Muddy happening at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street (at 15th Avenue).  This is curated annual collection of fine art, craft and design. This is also Shiny Fuzzy Muddy’s 17th and final year of this market. The curated collective is brought to you by artists, Kari Woo, Janna Hurtzig, Arleigh Wood and Frances Dickinson and features some of Western Canada’s brightest talent.  This collaborative event provides a venue that champions craftsmanship over mass production, annually hosting over 30 Canadian and BC based artists to exhibit in an intimate environment where shoppers can mingle with the makers. Throughout the years of this long running show, over 75 Canadian visual artists, makers, designers, jewelers and potters and their products have been featured at events providing a unique platform for consumers to meet the people who create art in the city.

“It’s bittersweet that 2019 will be the final Shiny Fuzzy Muddy show,” says Frances Dickinson, co-founder, of the SFM Collective, “we have seen the growth of slow fashion and handmade design in Vancouver over the past 17 years and we are so proud to have championed this movement.  But now, as artists and designers who crave change and creativity, it’s time for all of us to focus on new projects.”

Tugboat Landing Artisan Market In SE Vancouver December 7 & 8, 2019

BulldogwithHatHave you made your way down to the walking trails along the Fraser River in SE Vancouver?  If you have, you will come across an area called Tugboat Landing at the foot of Victoria Drive at East Kent Avenue South.  If you aren’t familiar with this area, it once housed tugboats at this landing on the Fraser River hence the name. It was redeveloped into a community of condos and townhomes that enjoy river front living.  The area is located on a public walkway and cycle path just steps away from Gladstone Park and less than a mile West of the new River District development.

The 4th Annual Tugboat Landing Artisan Market will be happening in this still not that well known area at 2010 East Kent Avenue. The artisan market is a small curated market with about 20 vendors per day offering a wide range of items perfect for gift giving this holiday season.  Some of what you can expect to find include handmade artisan chocolates by Ladner Artisan Chocolates, custom dog wear from ScouterWear, jewellery by Ebb & Flo Designs, Cord & Stone and Sole Tibi Studio.  Il Fioraio Florist will be on hand with fun whimsical floral holiday décor. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to make homemade preserves, Mary Anne Dragan will be on hand with her cookbook and tips.  If you want keepsake holiday décor and ornaments, stop by and see Rakia.   If it’s eats you have in mind, Stepping Stones Bakery will be on hand with a wide variety of baked goods. Be prepared for a line up though.  Also on hand will be Bill’s Jams & Chutney and Toon’s Hot Sauce which is a newly created hot sauce by a local chef.  If you are looking for gifts for the wee ones, Guava Jelly will be on hand with hand painted onesies and adorable toques. ILiveInEastVan will be on site with a selection of totes, t-shirts & toques. Lastly, Second Nature Home will be on hand hosting a Pop Up Shop with a wide array of items from their store.

The fireplace will be on, so will the coffee, tea and hot cocoa along with sweets for nibbling while you shop. These items available by donation with all proceeds going to the Vancouver BC SPCA and SAINTS Rescue. Hours are 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is free.  Stop by and support your local makers and artisans.

It really is true.  Did you know:
