Pop Up Water Park – David Thompson School – August 9th

Vancouver Fire & Rescue is hosting a Pop Up Water Park this Friday, August 9th at David Thompson Secondary School from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  You can find the school just West of Victoria Drive at 53rd Avenue.  In the event of rain, the event is cancelled.

Vancouver Mural Festival – August 1 to 10, 2019

The Vancouver Mural Festival continues this weekend with one of the big musical events, The Park Show in Jonathon Rogers Park.  The festival is a great opportunity to check out some of the 25+ new murals around Vancouver. There will also be a spirit lifting puppet and clown parade by the folks behind the Dusty Flower Pot in the alley way between 6th and 7th Avenue off Main Street. Playland – Now Open Every Day

If you are looking to entertain the kids, Playland is now open every day from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm until The PNE Fair starts on August 17th. To learn more, visit Playland.

Lakeview & Cedar Cottage Historical Walk – August 10th

If you wish to learn a bit more about some interesting East Van history, you are invited to come along with local historian Peter Finch this Saturday. Peter will take you on a tour of the Cedar Cottage and Lakeview area and share stories from before World War 1 and what Vancouver was like then. Cost is a very reasonable $2. The tour happens from Noon to 1:00 pm and begins from Trout Lake Community Centre.

James Johnstone History Walk – Strathcona – August 10th

This Saturday James Johnstone returns with his East End Walking Tours. This one takes you around Strathcona and the eclectic history here. Tour starts at 696 East Hastings St. and Heatley at 10:00 am. Costs is $20.

Summer Savour Festival – River District Town Centre – August 10th

Wesgroup Properties is hosting Summer Savour Festival this Saturday from 2:00 to 6:00 pm in River District Town Centre. The event features live music by local artists including The Boom Booms, a Beer Garden along with a host of family friendly activities. This is a free event. Everyone is welcome.

Windfall Cider Summer Bash 2019! – The Garden – August 10th

Love cider? Then you may wish to check out the Windfall Cider Summer Bash happening at The Garden, 868 E. Hastings St. in Strathcona this Saturday. Windfall Cedar founders Nathaly and Jeff Nairn will be on hand for a special cider pop up offering cider flights, cider slushies along side tasty tapas.  This is a free event, you can register through Eventbrite to reserve your spot which will we hear will be on their outdoor patio. Event gets under way at 6 pm and goes till 11:00 pm.

Artful Sundays – Napier Greenway – August 11th

Artful Sundays kicks off in the Napier Greenway this Sunday between Noon and 5:00 pm. You can expect some great local talent, live music, workshops and artisans including a personal favourite BagItUpByKate for those wishing to ditch the plastic when grocery shopping. And if you are in need of some help with relaxation, check out her relaxation eye bags with locally grown lavender.  The event is free to attend. The Napier Greenway is located just outside the Britannia Community Centre/Library.

Main Street Mixed Bag – Ellis Building – August 11th

Main Street Mixed Bag is back at the Ellis Building, 1024 Main Street, this Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  As the name eludes, a mixed bag of artisans, garage sale, collectibles and everything in between.  No admission, kids and dogs welcome.  We hear there is a new local indigenous artist making some beautiful jewellery, check out Inner Wolf Jewellery.

Strange Fellows Movie Night – August 11th

If you love beer, popcorn and movies, you are in luck! Strange Fellows Brewing is hosting a double bill this Sunday at their brewery between 6:00 and 10:00 pm. They will be showing Die Hard and Pulp Fiction.

Do you love cartoons? Miss those Saturday morning cartoons you used to watch as a kid. Do you know Storm Crow Tavern offers cartoons Saturday morning from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm whilst you enjoy breakfast/brunch?

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, no cover.

Looking to shop and support local? Be sure to check out one of the farmer markets happening this weekend. Saturday is Riley Park Farmers Market at 30th & Ontario from 10 am – 2 pm and Trout Lake Farmers Market from 9 am – 2 pm at John Hendry Park. Sunday, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is back in Dude Chilling Park from 10:00 am – 2 pm. Savour Summer Festival Happens at River District Town Centre August 10th

If are looking for some free summer fun and entertainment, you may wish to check out the Savour Summer Festival happening this Saturday, August 10th at the River District Town Centre, 8550 River District Crossing. The festival features summer games, mini golf, a dunk tank in support of local charities along with the latest craze which we hear is axe throwing?!   We also hear a beer garden will be available for 19+ patrons. If you don’t already know, an Everything Wine store is located across from the River District Town Centre and they will have lots of in store wine tastings happening during the festival.   The event also features live music by lots of local talent including Cory Owens and The Boom Booms.  The festival runs from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and again it’s free. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Indiana Jones Marathon – Rio Theatre – July 12th

Love Indiana Jones? Nothing like seeing these movies on a big screen and this Friday night, the Rio Theatre has 3 of these movies back to back kicking things off with Raiders of the Lost Ark at 6:20 pm followed by The Temple of Doom and finishing it off with The Last Crusade. For tickets, visit the Rio Theatre.

Outdoor Movie – Trout Lake – July 12th

If you are looking for some free family fun, Collingwood Neighbourhood Centre hosts the movie Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (Johnny Depp version) Friday night at 9:00 pm. Location is near the tennis courts.  Free popcorn will be on hand.

Swinging With Sinatra – Hungarian Cultural Centre – July 13th

If you love that big band sound, you may want to check out local crooner Dane Warren. He will be performing with the Bruce James Orchestra Big Band this Saturday, July 13th at the Hungarian Cultural Centre.  You are invited for an evening of Sinatra (and friends).  Come to listen or come to dance. This is an all ages event. Tickets are $17.50 and available through Eventbrite.

Summer Savour Festival – River District town Centre – July 13th

Live music with a variety of performers happens this Saturday between 2:00 and 6:00 pm at the River District Town Centre in SE Vancouver. Circus performer Shine Davine will be performing at 2:45 pm followed by a magic show with Yeeri the Magician at 3:35 pm.  There are lots of activities for the kids (big and little) including face painting, mural painting and Confetti Box. There will be some food trucks on hand plus River District Neighbourhood Centre at the foot of Victoria Drive & Kerr will have cupcakes available for decorating and eating of course.  This a free event. RecycleFest – Trout Lake/John Hendry Park – July 13th

If you wish to learn more about sustainable living, RecycleFest is the place to be this Saturday.  Along with taking in small appliances for recycling, Repair Matters will be on site as well as activities and learning opportunities for all ages.  This is a free event that happens at John Hendry Park between 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Beer Garden – Parallel 49 Brewing – July 13th

Parallel 49 Brewing is hosting their 4th Annual Summer Beer Garden. This outdoor event happens from 2:00 to 8:00 pm.  They’ll have a DJ on hand with music, taco menu and of course beer.

Weiner Dog Races – Hastings Racecourse – July 13th & 14th

The last of the Dog Days of Summer happens this weekend at the Hastings Racecourse.  This is the grande finale for the season with the Wiener Dog Races.   Event happens Saturday and Sunday.  No admission cost.  Gates open at noon.

If You Could Read My Mind: Gordon Lightfoot – Rio Theatre – July 14th

The documentary If You Could Read My Mind is playing again this Sunday at The Rio Theatre.  It features the life and music of Canadian music icon, Gordon Lightfoot. This is billed is an intimate and emotional examination of the artist’s profound relationship to his music and his Canadian roots. Documentary runs at 2:00 pm. For tickets, visit Rio Theatre.

Main Street Mixed Bag – The Ellis Building – July 14th

The Main Street Mixed Bag happens this Sunday at the Ellis Building, 1024 Main Street from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  This is a fun eclectic mix of handmade artisans, vintage and maybe a little bit of garage sale.  Admission is free.  All ages welcome including your 4 legged friends, on leash of course. Cash bar for those that wish a bit of refreshment while shopping.

The 4th Annual Art, Beer & Bike Crawl – East Van – July 14th

A fundraiser for the Eastside Culture Crawl happens this Sunday at various craft breweries in East Van. Take a bike tour of 3 East Van craft breweries along with tastings of course between 1:00 and 5:00 pm this Sunday.  Tickets are $60 per person or 2 for $100. For tickets, visit Eventbrite.

Custom Cocktail Class At Everything Wine Vancouver Friday May 31st

Looking for something fun to do this Friday night?  How about learning to make some top notch cocktails.  Everything Wine Vancouver in the new River District has an amazing space for workshops and this Friday it’s all about cocktails.  You will learn to make an Old Fashioned, Gin Sour, Whiskey Sour, Last Word, Dark Angel and a Vodka Martini, apparently with some of the BEST vodka you’ve ever had. The event will be featuring spirits from the Roots and Wings Distillery and not only will you learn to make the cocktails, but you will of course be tasting them as well.  Cost is $25 and there are a few spaces left. The Wonders Of Wine From Eastern Europe May 15th At Everything Wine Vancouver

Many of us know wines from some of the well known wine making regions, France, California, Australia and our own Okanagan Valley.  Have you tried wines from Eastern Europe?  On Wednesday, May 15th Mark Konstantinov will take you on a tour of wines from a sampling of regions such as Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Maldova, Georgia and Hungary. These areas are rich with history, which Mark will touch on during the workshop. You will also have the opportunity to try a number of wines from these regions, we suspect ones you’ve likely never been exposed to.  The event takes place at the Everything Wine store located in River District in SE Vancouver. This is a beautiful store with an amazing selection with a great space for their tasting classes.  Cost of the workshop is $25.00. Class runs 6:30 to 8:00 pm. The Dirty Betty Show – Café Deux Soleils – October 12th

Looking for some saucy entertainment this Friday night? The Dirty Betty Show is back for their monthly stop at Café Deux Soleils. You expect comedians, drag superstars and improvisers. Doors open at 8:00 pm, show gets under way at 8:30 pm. Tickets are available at the door $10, but note the show can sell out. So we recommend checking in earlier.

Drive In Movies – River District – October 13th

Whitish – Havana Theatre – October 13th

For one night only, Whitish comes to Havana Theatre. This is a storytelling show about the perils of being biracial. Six performers will ask the questions people ask, where are you from? What are you? The event is hosted by Jo Dworschak creator of Story Story Lie. The show is for one night only at Havana Theatre. Tickets are $12 and available online through Showpass.

AbraCadaver Cabaret: Urban Legends – Wise Hall – October 13th

A new event at the Wise Hall, the AbraCadaver Cabaret presents a series of horror inspired vignettes along with the world of magic, burlesque striptease and storytelling. The venue seems fitting since some seem to think the Wise is haunted. Due to the morbid subject matter, the show is not for the faint of heart. Advance tickets are available from $18 or at the door $20. Doors open at 8:00 pm, show gets under way at 9:00 pm.

The Transformers The Movie – Rio Theatre – October 13 & 14

Looking for some fun indoor entertainment with the kids this weekend, The Transformers – The Movie is showing at the Rio Theatre Saturday at 1:15 pm and Sunday at 9:30 pm for the big kids.

Free Movie ‘Hell Or High Water’ – Britannia Community Centre – October 14th

Britannia Community Centre is again showing a free moving this Sunday night. This week it’s Hell Or High Water.  Things get underway at 6:30 pm.  Everyone is welcome.

Two Farmer Markets happening this weekend – Saturday it’s Riley Park (10 am – 2 pm) and Trout Lake (9 am – 2 pm). Just a reminder, the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is now closed for the season.  Watch for the Hastings Park Winter Market coming November 4th.
