Call To Artists: The Cultch Gallery Seeks Artists For 2020/2021 Gallery Season

The Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, has put out a call to visual artists to submit applications to exhibit their work during their 2020/2021 gallery season. Each exhibition will run for 3 to 5 weeks between August 2020 and June 2021. Submissions can be single or multiple artists’ proposals.

The Cultch has built a reputation over the past 40 years as one of Western Canada’s most innovative and exciting presenting venues. The mandate of The Cultch is to contribute to the enrichment of the city and community’s social and cultural life through the presentation of innovative programs of contemporary music, theatre, dance and visual arts by established and emerging artists.

The Cultch Gallery is a multi-use space and not a traditional art gallery as it also serves as the lobby for performances and is occasionally used for meetings and other small events. Due to the diverse nature of this space, submissions that include sculptures or free standing art will not be accepted.  Further, they will only be able to show works that hang from their gallery ‘rail’ system that does not have a depth of more than 12″.

Submission Criteria for Artists:

  1. An artist statement
  2. Artist bio(s)
  3. Resume/CV
  4. A complete list of images you are submitting, which should include title, size, medium. These images do not have to be the work you will be showing. They want to get a good overview of your work.
  5. You can submit up to 10 images and not necessarily the images you plan on showing, but so they get a sense of the range of work you do. Image files should be in .jpeg format. No PDFs. File names must include the artist name, title of artwork and size of the work when framed: (example: Yuri Arajs – Sunny Day -18 in x 30 in. jpg). Images should be 300 dpi.

Artists will be notified in June 2020 on the results of the selection process.

Bad Abby Vintage Fashion & Art Fair At Odd Society Spirits December 5 & 6, 2019

BadAbbyDec.2019Odd Society Spirits plays host to another unique event this December. You are invited to stop by and check out the Bad Abby Vintage Fashion & Art Fair happening at Odd Society Spirits, 1725 Powell Street. If you don’t know this great local distillery with some of the best cocktails in town, it’s just one more reason to stop in.  Their regular cocktail list will be available as well as our hot spiced apple cider including a non-alcoholic version. Some of what you can expect to find include honey that was a collaboration between Odd Society Spirits and Hives for Humanity. It is a barrel infused honey that was first held in Rye, then Maple Syrup, then Vodka! The result we hear is a deep, rich and soothing, spirit infused honey.  Also, on hand will be a variety of local artists including Emma Neal, Meg Keetley and Jacquelyn Wood. Ellie Golding will be on hand with minimalist jewellery and photographer Mia Glanz with a series of seaside images from the island of Mallorca.   Everyone is welcome to stop by during their hours of 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm. There is no admission charge for the event.

Eastside Culture Crawl Happens November 14 to 17, 2019

ECC2019The Eastside Culture Crawl is back for 4 days starting Thursday, November 14th.  This event is a 4 day arts extravaganza that features the work of over 478 artists in and around East Vancouver.  Artists with a variety of mediums open their studio doors so you can see first hand their working space, their creative process and of course meet and talk to the artists about their work. On The Crawl, you will find painters, jewelers, sculptors, textile artists, furniture makers, weavers, potters, printmakers, wood carvers, photographers and much more. The event comprises some 78 buildings from Main Street to Victoria Drive and First Avenue to Powell Street.

We suggest if time is not on your side and you don’t mind crowds, you can take in the works of many artists in one fell swoop at 1000 Parker Street and the Mergatroid. These two hubs in the heart of East Van also feature food trucks for those that get hungry or thirsty wandering around.  The Mergatroid, at 975 Vernon Drive is just steps away from 1000 Parker Street also offers glass blowing demonstrations throughout the event on the main level which always draws a crowd.

If you don’t like crowds, there are a wide range of spaces to choose from during The Crawl, so there are lots of opportunities to see working studios and spaces that are a little further afield.   This year, as you make your way around, we encourage you to watch for the Displacement Exhibit. It is a multi-venue salon style exhibition which you can view at the Arts Factory, The Cultch, Firehall Arts Centre and Alternative Creation galleries.  This is an important exhibit that addresses the issue of disappearing affordable artistic production spaces and raise awareness of the loss of these spaces in our community.  The exhibit features work by artists faced with the challenge of eviction, shifting demographics and displacement.   The Eastside Culture Crawl Society feels “the contribution of arts and culture is integral to the identity of our city and the threat to viable artist space is a threat to the very core of a healthy vibrant community.” We couldn’t agree more. Change is inevitable but we would like to see a balance to ensure support for what makes Vancouver unique and beautiful.  To help guide you through some of the art available, the Eastside Culture Crawl has a great rundown of all the artists on their website including a printable .PDF map to help you find your way. If you have creative kids and want to check out The Crawl, we invite you to check out Crawling For Kids which Melk Art & Design is again hosting at their studio at 936 Clark Drive on Saturday and Sunday 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm  It is a free afternoon of hands on creativity. It’s an opportunity to create collaged cards with nature inspired stamps.  Again, it’s free, first come first served.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, one thing we love about the Eastside Culture Crawl is that there is no set schedule. You go where you want, when you want for as long or as little as you want.  Add to that, there are an array of great spots to stop for a bite to eat or if one gets thirsty.   Whether you are in Strathcona, off the Drive, Railtown, Hastings Sunrise, Downtown Eastside or off of Clark Drive, there are countless options for coffee, beer, food and wine. Enjoy and get out support our local artists.

Maker Faire At Science World September 14th

MakerFaire2019If you are creative and/or love to make things, or maybe you’d like to introduce some young minds to all the ways in which one can make things. If so, this Saturday is a great opportunity with the Maker Faire which happens at Science World with over 50 artists, inventors, crafters and performers.   This is a community-driven festival that showcases all kinds of makers and generally embraces the do-it-yourself spirit.  Come and explore the world of making this Saturday between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm.  Admission is $27.15 for adults, seniors, student and youth (13-18) $21.70 children 3-12 $18.10 and children under 3 are free.  To learn more visit, Maker Faire.

Artful Sundays Return To The Napier Greenway August 11th to September 1st

Artful Sundays 2019 PosterArtful Sundays return to the Napier Greenway this summer.  If you aren’t familiar with this event, it is weekly outdoor visual art market which happens over 4 Sundays in the Napier Greenway.  It happens in a great community space by the Britannia Community Centre located at Commercial Drive & Napier Street. The first event kicks off Sunday, August 11th from Noon to 5:00 pm and for the next 3 Sundays following. We do know that a couple of personal favourites artisans will be at the August 11th event, BagItUpBy Kate to help you reduce plastic use while shopping and Perching Art Clay with some stunning pieces of jewellery. Each Artful Sunday brings a variety of local artists, workshops, artist demonstrations, live music and more.  Lots to do and see and it’s free to wander and take in the art that surrounds us.  The event takes place in the Napier Greenway at Napier Street & Commercial Drive from Noon – 5:00 pm each Sunday from August 11th to September 1st.

Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival – Call For Artists

CallForArtistsRenfrewRavineThe 17th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival happens September 14th. In advance of that, they have put out a call for artists who have an idea for an illuminated art installation.  They are looking to expand and diversify the art that is displayed at the 17th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival. The event celebrates the full moon and equinox. They are accepting proposals for art installations including lantern art, electronic art, land art and eco-art. No experience with outdoor installations necessary.  They are encouraging people from a variety of backgrounds to participate.  To learn more about their hopes and requirements for the event, visit Still Moon Arts Society.  Deadline for applications is Monday August 5th at midnight.  This is a great opportunity to be part of amazing community event.

Parker Art Salon At 1000 Parker Street May 24-26, 2019

ParkerArtSalon_exhibtionLove art? Missed the Eastside Culture Crawl? Then you will want to check out the Parker Art Salon happening May 24 to 26, 2019 at 1000 Parker Street. This 105 year old warehouse is home to an array of talented artists.  During the Parker Art Salon, the halls will be transformed into a salon style Fine Art Exhibition complete with chandeliers for fun and ambiance.  You will have the opportunity to meet many of the artists that work in this space, take a scheduled guided 1 hour tour for $10 or just wander at your own pace on May 25th and 26th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.  If you are in the market to purchase art, you may wish to attend the Collectors Night on Friday, May 24th. This $50 ticket gives you admission to a private reception from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, 2 bar tickets, food, a catalogue and first dibs on local artwork.  For tickets to any of the paid events, visit Eventbrite.  Or stop by Saturday and Sunday, you can wander at your leisure between 1:00 and 5:00 pm. Shiny Fuzzy Muddy December 8 & 9 At The Heritage Hall

ShinyFuzzyMuddy2018This weekend you are invited to check out Shiny Fuzzy Muddy happening at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street (at 15th Avenue).  This is curated collection of fine art and design. Shiny Fuzzy Muddy is now in its 16th and is brought to you by artists, Kari Woo, Janna Hurtzig, Arleigh Wood and Frances Dickinson.  The event features some of Western Canada’s brightest talent.  This weekend’s event is a Holiday Showcase which will feature a host of talented designers including Adhesif Clothing, Daub & Design, Winterluxe Recycled Cashmere, Biaca Barr Designs, Flight Path Designs, Claudia Szhulz Hats and a personal favourite Kari Woo Contemporary Art Jewellery. Admission is $4.00 at the door. Stop by Saturday or Sunday between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Eastside Cultural Crawl November 15 – 18, 2018

EastsideCultureCrawl2018The Eastside Culture Crawl is back for 4 days starting Thursday, November 15th.  This 4 day arts extravaganza is now its 22nd year and features over 480 artists in and around East Vancouver.  If you aren’t already familiar with this event, artists from a variety of mediums open their studio doors so you can see firsthand their working space, their creative process and their work.  The artists themselves will of course be on hand to discuss any aspect of their work. During the Eastside Culture Crawl, you will find painters, jewelers, sculptors, textile artists, furniture makers, weavers, potters, printmakers, wood carvers, photographers and much more. The event grows each year and now comprises over 80 buildings from Main Street to Victoria Drive and First Avenue to Powell Street.

If time is not on your side and you want to take in as many artists in one fell swoop, 1000 Parker Street and the Mergatroid are your spots to hit and definitely a hub of action which includes some food trucks for those that get hungry. The Mergatroid, 975 Vernon Drive has glass blowing demonstrations on view at the main level, but be sure to check out the other studio spaces within the building.  Note, this part of The Crawl can get busy on the weekends, so if that’s not your thing, there are many other options.  Organizers prepare an amazing online map that sets out all the studios.  We invite you to check it out.  If you are unsure where you wish to start, check out the Program Guide for more information.

Each year, we try and tackle a new area/artists we haven’t visited before. This year we are heading to The Arts Factory to check out a young artist we’ve been following for a few years now, Kat McPhee. Her work applies elements of graffiti, is edgy and has the feel of street art.

Also, on our list this year is the artist, L.J. Throstle. Lucy creates beautiful works using single use stencils and acrylic spray paint. Her subjects are generally people and animals. If you can find les amis du fromage’s East van location (843 East Hastings), you can find Lucy’s studio, it is below ground at 841 East Hastings.  She captures subjects in a unique way.

If it’s woodworking you wish to see, you need to check out Jesse Toso and the Toso Wood Works in Parker Studios at 1000 Parker Street.  His items are made for salvaged wood are beautiful and unique.  If you can’t make The Crawl which showcase his larger pieces, you can also visit his gallery at 3567 Commercial Street before or after The Crawl.

What we love about the Eastside Culture Crawl is that you have 4 days to stop in and check out the artists at your own pace.  You go where you want on The Crawl for as long as you want.  Adding to the event, is many great spots to stop for a bite or refreshment along the way. Whether you are in Strathcona, off the Drive, Railtown, Hastings Sunrise, Downtown Eastside or off the growing stretch off Clark Drive, there are countless options for coffee, beer, food and wine.

The 42nd Annual Powell Street Festival August 4 & 5, 2018

PowellStreetFestival42Canada’s largest celebration of Japanese Canadian arts & culture will be held on August 4th and 5th in Vancouver’s historic Japanese Canadian neighbourhood. The 42nd Annual Powell Street Festival takes place in Oppenheimer Park as well as the surrounding areas including the Firehall Arts Centre, Vancouver Buddhist Temple and the Vancouver Japanese Language School. There is a long line up of events including Sumo Wrestling, Japanese Food, Martial Arts, Dance, Taiko Drumming, Walking Tours, Anime, Film, Literary Events, Live Music and much more.  Festival highlights include a performance by virtuoso percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani and the Nakatani Gong Orchestra as well as Sadgrrrl rocker Emma Lee Toyoda. Also on hand for this festival is an exhibit by international artists Chiharu Mizukawa & Nao Uda.  This barely scratches the surface. There’s much more happening.
