Leg Up! – Moberly Arts Centre – February 15th & 16th

Dezza Dance and Moberly Arts and Culttural Centre have partnered with emerging dance artists to bring you Leg Up!.  Five choreographers bring their high energy performance to the stage this Friday and Saturday night at the Moberly Arts Centre, 7646 Prince Albert Street. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. To get advance tickets, visit Dezza Dance.

The Gravel-Aires & The Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio – Café Deux Soleil – Feb. 16th

Café Deux Soleils hosts some great live music this Saturday night with The Gravel-Aires and The Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio. They will be featuring roots, blues, bluegrass and folk music.  Cost is $5-$10 at the door. Show gets under way at 9 pm.

Documentary ‘Free Solo’  – Rio Theatre – February 16th & 18th

Oscar nominated documentary FREE SOLO comes to the Rio Theatre this weekend for 2 showings.  This is a stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of the free soloist climber who prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world’s most famous rock, the 3,000 foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without a rope. We hear this is an edge-of-your seat thriller.  Free Solo shows Saturday, February 16th at 12:15 pm and Monday, February 18th at 3:20 pm.

Free Family Fun – Britannia Community Centre – February 18th

You are invited to the Britannia Community Centre for an afternoon of free family fun.  Lots on offer with ice-skating, kids craft zone, face painting, balloon twisting, hot drinks and treats.  Activities take place between 1:00 and 3:30 pm.

Family Day Celebration  – Trout Lake Community Centre – February 18th

Aiyacarumba Trout Lake Community Centre has a whole rang of free activities planned for Family Day this coming Monday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  There’s an Art Lab, Cooking Demonstration, Tai Chi Demonstration, Dance Performances, crafts and much more.  Much Ado About Nothing – The Cultch 

Much Ado About Nothing Set in a mesmerizing theatrical world evoking Colonial North Africa, this serious and sublimely ridiculous story of soldiers in love and women confined by tradition—is a bold and playful romp through the extremes of desire and ambition, loyalty, and redemption. This the last weekend to catch the all female cast is part of The Cultch’s Femme Series.

Nasty Women Comedy – Biltmore Cabaret – February 18th

JFL Northwest presents Nasty Women Comedy this Monday evening. This  is an improv group consisting of some of Vancouver’s top female comedians.  A show that will leave you feeling fired up. Show gets under way at 8:30 pm

Looking for more live music, did you know The Heatley in Strathcona regularly features live music?  Every Sunday they offer bluegrass music with brunch 11 am – 3 pm.

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3-7 pm, no cover.

Looking to shop local? Be sure to check out one of the farmer markets happening this weekend. Saturday is Riley Park Farmers Market 10 am – 2 pm. June Hunter Studio Sale – 2785 Parker Street – February 10th

East Van artist and nature lover June Hunter is having a studio sale this weekend. So if you wish to pick up something special for a Valentine, an upcoming birthday or for yourself, this Saturday is your chance. Her studio is located in the Hastings Sunrise area. Sale happens 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Valentine’s cookies will be on hand for snacking.

Hearts Workshop – Britannia Community Centre – February 10th 

A Hearts Workshop is happening this Saturday at Britannia Community Centre from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Express your love with a myriad of collage, colour and sparkle options in this hands-on workshop. Make a gift for someone special, or how about love bombing your neighbourhood? All materials are supplied and all ages are welcome.

Family Day Community Skate -PNE Agrodome – February 12th

A community skate happens Monday, February 12th at the PNE Agrodome from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.  Note, no rentals. You will need to bring your own skates and helmets which are required for all children 12 and younger.  Adults $3,Seniors/Youth (13-18): $2.50 and   Children (3-12): $2.00 and those 2 years and under are free.

Free Ice Skating/Kids Activities – Britannia Community Centre – February 12th

You are invited to come out and enjoy free ice skating at the ice rink at Britannia Community Centre from 1:00 to 3:30 pm.  There will also be arts and crafts available for kids.

Epic DVD Sale – Black Dog Video – 1470 Commercial Drive – February 15th 

If you are looking to stock up on your favourite movies to hold you over this wet Spring, you may wish to check out the Epic DVD Sale at Black Dog Video.  Sale happens Thursday, February 15th  at 1470 Commercial Drive from 9:00 to 11:00 pm.

Comedy, Live Music & Entertainment

Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival is happening at the Rio Theatre this weekend. Check out some of the amazing films featuring nature and our environment.  Also this weekend of course are the Winter Farmer Markets happening Saturday at Nat Bailey Stadium from 10 am to 2 pm and Sunday at Hastings Parking 10 am – 2 pm.  To see more of what’s on in East Vancouver, check our Event Listing.

Free Family Day Fun At Western Front Saturday June 18th

FamilyDayWesternFrontLooking for some free family fun? Well you are in luck. On Saturday, June 18th the Western Front is hosting their first ever Family Day.  Established in 1973, Western Front is one of Canada’s leading non-profit centres for contemporary art and new music, producing and presenting visual art exhibitions, new music concerts and media art residencies. Their upcoming Family Day event will feature musical performances, curated screenings as well as hands-on art and music activities for all ages. You are invited to explore their facility and get those creative juices flowing which can be through drawing scores for guest musicians that will be on hand, or hat-making, cookie-decorating or a host of other activities they will have lined up.   The Western Front’s youth music program will showcase some of their compositions from the past year which we hear will feature everyday sounds interpreted through looping, beatbox, storytelling, hip hop, electronics, video triggers and of all things, cornstarch!   The Western Front is located at 303 East 8th Avenue and the fun begins at 12:00 pm and goes till 5:00 pm and again, it’s all free.

Family Day On The Drive February 8 With Free Skate, Lion Dance & More

FamilyDay2016The Commercial Drive Business Society is hosting ‘Family Day On The Drive’ on Monday, February 8th.  This is a free community event with a number of activities lined up for the afternoon at the Britannia Community Centre.  The events kick off with a Lion Dance Performance at 2:00 pm. From 2:00 to 4:00 pm, you will find face painting, balloon twister and a caricature artist on hand.  There will be a free skate planned at the Britannia Ice Rink from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. For those that prefer something warmer, there will also be a free Public Swim from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the Britannia Community Pool.  As an added bonus, many of the merchants on The Drive will be offering special deals for Family Day, so keep an eye out or visit The Drive’s website for more details.
