11th Annual Cedar Cottage Community Garden Spring Fling May 25th

20 May

CedarCottage3Do you know the community garden that many of us drive by where Victoria Drive and Commercial Drive intersect?  The Cedar Cottage Community Garden is a beautiful community space that is rich with local history.  At the bottom of the garden is a shed that has been built like a replica of one of the old shelters for the Interurban. The Interurban was the original Skytrain, Vancouverʼs first rapid transit. These shelters offered both protection from the elements and often a ticket agent to sell riders their fare. More importantly the shed has a plaque, placed there to remind passersby of the events of the Lakeview Disaster. In 1909 at the current location of the community garden, a BC Electric Interurban train collided with a runaway railcar loaded with timber. The collision resulted in 14 people killed and another 9 seriously injured. What happened at Lakeview became the worst transit accident in Vancouver history.

This Saturday, May 25th you are invited to come celebrate and support community and food security with the 11th Annual Cedar Cottage Community Garden Spring Fling happening from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  There will be a bake sale, plant sale, live bluegrass music, medicinal plant walk at 11:30 with Lori Synder, raffle prizes with donations from local businesses including Second Nature Home to help raise funds for the community garden. This is a free family friendly event.

Twilight Crow Roost Bike Ride Saturday March 9th

5 Mar

StillMoonArtsCrowCrows are certainly part of everyday life in East Vancouver.  Even if you don’t see them or look for them, you always know they are there. They are a rather vocal bunch and quite interesting to watch. If you want to know where the crows fly off to at dusk, this weekend you can ride along with them to see where they go to roost.  March 9th is the Annual Twilight Crow Roost Bike Ride hosted by the Still Moon Arts Society. You are invited to join them for a ride from Central Valley Greenway and Garden Drive. The ride will follow the crows on the Central Valley Greenway towards Burnaby which is approximately a 5 km round trip. To ensure safety, organizers ask that you have lights and/or reflectors for the ride home.  This is a free family friendly event. Everyone is welcome. NOTE: Poor weather, could postpone the event. Please check Still Moon Arts Society Facebook page for any updates.  The ride gets under way at 5:30 pm.

Neapolitan Pizza At Via Tevere Pizzeria

17 Apr

There are many pizza places to choose from on, or near, Commercial Drive in East Vancouver. I recently had the pleasure of finally trying Via Tevere Pizzeria, 1190 Victoria Drive.  I have attempted to go before, but the line ups were a regular sighting which obviously said something about what was waiting within. So one Sunday evening, our group came prepared to wait, but the wait wasn’t long at all.

Via Tevere Pizzeria has been open just over one year now. It is the making of two brothers, Dom and Frank, whose family roots are tied to Naples, Italy. They make true Neapolitan pizza translation very thin crust and I will add now delicious!  Their pizzas are 12” size and are perfect for sharing which is exactly what we did with all four of them. You know the brothers must be doing something right to be featured on Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here which aired on April 12th.

The restaurant has character from the heritage building it is housed in, to the funky yellow 1969 Fiat 500 mini-car parked out front with Via Tevere branded on the side of the car. Then there is the wood fire brick oven, amazing chandeliers and not to mention the staff. The restaurant has a warmth to it and is very family friendly.  Via Tevere Pizzeria is open for dinner Tuesday to Thursday 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Sundays from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and closed Mondays. If there is a wait, I promise it will be worth it.   Bon appetit!
