Mrs. Krishnan’s Party – The Cultch – To February 3rd

You are invited to a party and you the audience members are in fact part of the harvest festival, Onam. This is a spontaneous theatrical celebration that is part performance, part improv that takes place in the back of a convenience store that Mrs. Krishnan owns.  An energetic wannabe DJ and boarder hosts a party in the back room and you get to see first hand how it unfolds. There’s lights, music, dance and daal. This is a fun production which will be sure to have you laughing.  Tickets are available online at The Cultch.

The Open House – Havana Theatre – January 18th & 19th

The Open House is offers something a little different than your usual family drama where all problems are solved in 2 hours. Instead this is billed as a wildly subversive and darkly funny take on family drama.  Production takes place at Havana Theatre Friday night and Saturday there’s a matinee and evening show. Tickets are $27 – $25 and available through Showpass.

Looking for more live music, did you know The Heatley in Strathcona regularly features live music?  Every Sunday they offer bluegrass music with brunch 11 am – 3 pm.

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3-7 pm, no cover.

Looking to shop local? Be sure to check out one of the farmer markets happening this weekend. Saturday is Riley Park Farmers Market 10 am – 2 pm. Totem Pole Raising Ceremony – Collingwood Neighbourhood House – January 12th

This Saturday witness one of the those rare opportunities a Totem Pole Raising Ceremony. The event begins at 10:30 am with a community parade from Collingwood Neighbourhood House, 5288 Joyce Street, to Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s Annex at 3690 Vanness Avenue. This is a free event. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Unscriptured: The Extended Version  – Havana Theatre – January 11th & 12th

A 2018 Vancouver Pick of the Fringe award winning comedy, Unscriptured is at Havana Theatre this Friday and Saturday night. The production is a completely improvised church service for a religion made up on the spot. You, the audience, gets to make the suggestions.  This formerly 1 man show has been expanded to include a choir and guest preachers.  Tickets are $5.00 and a collection plate will get circulated after the show in true church form. Comedy For A Cure – Rio Theatre – January 12th

You are invited for an evening of comedy with Charlie Demers, Jacob Samuel and host Katie-Ellen Humphries. These three are regulars on CBC’s The Debaters and will be on stage this Saturday for a Funny Fun FUNdraiser at the Rio Theatre to benefit the Tumour Foundation of BC and children and individuals with neurofibromatosis (NF). Tribute to David Bowie – Rickshaw Theatre – January 12th

This Saturday night a group of local talents including Cass King, The Next Right, We Found A Lovebird and Pointed Sticks will play tribute to David Bowie at the Rickshaw Theatre.  All proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society. Tickets are $15. For advance tickets, visit Rickshaw Theatre.

Archive’s Consignment Warehouse Sale – 1275 Venables – November 2nd & 3rd

A new organization in Vancouver called Archive is focused on helping locals become more savvy about sustainable fashion practices, including buying more long-lasting, high-quality pieces, including those that are second-hand.  They’ve put together Vancouver’s first consignment warehouse sale which will have racks of all-season men’s and women’s apparel and accessories for sale.  Free admission Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, or to get a jump on the crowds, $10 for 1 hour head start.  There’s also a VIP option the evening before with Sustainable Panel conversation as well as shopping.  To get an advance ticket, visit Eventbrite.

Bling – Heritage Hall – November 4th

The Pacific Pyros present the 4th annual bead show BLING at the Heritage Hall this Sunday, November 4th.  This show features a wide range of wearable glass art by 17 artists.  Along with the show there will be demonstrations has well as hourly draws. Backbone – Vancouver Playhouse – November 4th

The Cultch presents the renowned Australian circus company, Gravity & Other Myths in the production Backbone.  10 performers and 2 musicians take the stage at the Vancouver Playhouse and display incredible strength and flexibility with dance like movements.  This show is only here for a short run. The Enemy At The Firehall Arts Centre November 10 – December 1, 2018

The Enemy 1 - Jenn Griffin and Paul Herbert.jpgThe Firehall Arts Centre is presenting a new political drama that touches on a number of themes including corruption, environmental activism and a lack of accountability. The Enemy is a contemporary interpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People. The original story was written in 1882, but with the current political climate in the US, The New York Times says this story “is suddenly as timely as a tweet.” In Ibsen’s version, Dr. Stockman is written as a male. In The Enemy, Artistic Director Donna Spencer has taken the role of Dr. Stockman and written it as a female to illustrate the road blocks women face when challenging the “powers-that-be” or “the old boys club”. This production also touches on the choices  we make, the ones we think we should make but don’t, and the influences around us that colour that decision-making. The Enemy asks “is the majority always right?” “What happens when truth is declared as not the truth?” “What happens when disbelief is spread via social media, ‘fake news’, and shoddy journalism?” Who ends up being the enemy?

Artistic Director Donna Spencer has chosen a piece that reflects what is happening in the world today. A timely piece that encourages us to look at and question the political, social and environmental landscape around us. Never Still At The Firehall Arts Centre September 26th – 29th, 2018

Never Still the newest work by Vanessa Goodman is inspired by the inherent conflicts and dichotomies of water. The production is both graceful and challenging, much like humanity itself. The show has social, environmental and biological themes explored within this highly physical new work.  Never Still dives into the distinctive and overlap between three different systems of circulation: global water cycles, communication technology and fluids within the body.  “We are living in an increasingly polarized culture,” says Donna Spencer, the Firehall Arts Centre’s Artistic Producer. “And it is our role as artistic creators to encourage audiences to consider, through what they are seeing on stage, how inextricably linked we all are in finding our way through these challenging times.”  Donna goes onto say that this Season the Firehall Arts Centre’s programming is “about choices – ones we make, the one we think we should make but don’t and the influences around us that colour that decision-making”. This production is a collaboration Shion Skye Carter, Stéphanie Cyr, Bynh Ho, Scott Morgan, Alexa Mardon, James Proudfoot and Lexi Vajda.   Never Still is at the Firehall Arts Centre from Wednesday, September 26th to Saturday, September 29th at 8:00 pm. Eat.Drink.Play. At The Firehall Arts Centre June 14, 2018

EatDrinkPlay2018The Firehall Arts Centre invites you to Eat.Drink.Play. being held on Thursday, June 14th from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova Street.  This annual fundraiser brings together some of East Van’s best restaurants, craft brewers, small-batch distillers and performers for an evening of sampling and sharing.  The event takes over the Firehall’s entire premises including theatre, lobby, studio, courtyard as well as the dressing rooms.  Throughout the Firehall, you will find an array of delectable treats, eclectic dance, music and performances as well as a silent auction.  Eat.Drink.Play will feature selections of food from neighbourhood hot spots including The Pint, Tuc Craft Kitchen, Cadeaux Baker, Crab Park Chowdery, Kofta, Elephant & Castle.  Libations will be provided the kind folks at Steamworks Brewery nand Odd Society Spirits as well as Hoochy Boooch kombucha.  You can expect a smorgasbord of delectable treats and enjoyable performances as you roam through the heritage building sampling food, enjoying libations, and bidding on some amazing silent auction items. For music and laughter, Krystle Dos Santos, recently seen in the Chelsea Hotel will be on hand as will Andy Toth seen in the Firehall’s Urinetown The Musical and a few more guests. Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not only forget, but erase from memory. This is the premise of the Chelsa Hotel which pays tribute to the songs of Leonard Cohen. This production on its final run continues this weekend. The Chelsea Hotel: Songs Of Leonard Cohen Returns To Firehall Arts Centre

Leonard Cohen’s powerful and inspirational music is the heartbeat of Chelsea Hotel, as six performers play seventeen different instruments in a rollicking tribute to the remarkable writer.  Haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a writer checks into New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song.  Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not only forget, but erase from memory.

Conceived and directed by Tracey Power, with musical arrangements by Steve Charles, Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen is an inventive fusion of music, dance, and theatre that invites its audience into the hotel room of a creative mind and takes them on a poetic musical journey.  The production premiered in February of 2012 and was nicknamed ‘the make out show’ as patrons were often caught kissing outside the theatre after the show.  It was remounted by popular demand in the Fall of that same year and went on tour to Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, and Toronto.

With over 200 shows since its premiere, Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen has played to audiences of all ages and received praise across the country for its imagination and creativity.  It received Ovation Awards for “Outstanding Ensemble Production” and “Outstanding Director,” and received numerous nominations for awards including the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award, Calgary Theatre Critics’ Award, and Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award.  The production kicks off in Vancouver March 17th. For those on a budget, note the Firehall Arts Centre offers Pay What You Can shows on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm.  Also for anyone 30 years of age and under, you can get in for $20 any day with proof of age. SHIT At The Firehall Arts Centre – January 27, 2018 to February 10, 2018

Australian’s most unapologetic playwright, Patricia Cornelius, examines the lives of three incarcerated underclass women in a manner unseen on most theatre stages.  SHIT asks you to consider women with foul mouths and weathered faces, women who spit, fight, swear, hurt and steal. They are angry, unrelenting, terrifying and damaged women. They discuss fist fights, foster care, babies, their mothers, crying and what it’s like to believe in absolutely nothing.  “There is nothing romantic in these characters’ outsider mindsets’ says Cornelius who states there is something admirable about the fight in these women who do not behave as others think they should. Cornelius believes many women will be able to relate to this. SHIT takes place at the Firehall Arts Centre January 27th to February 10th, 2018. For tickets, visit Firehall Arts Centre.

Contributing writer Tiva Quinn checked out opening night of this production. Here is her take on SHIT:

I kind of expected yet another story where bad things happen to women who are fundamentally, deep down, good people. Crusty but with a heart of gold somewhere inside.

SHIT is not that story. These women don’t make any plays for your respect or your sympathy. Tough times have turned them into tough people and they’re not especially kind to themselves or to one another. Near the beginning of the play they laugh about the times when you’re that woman – the woman on the bus who’s cursing to herself at full volume and making everyone uncomfortable. Only one of these three women is a bit vulnerable, and the other two are determined to teach her to knock it off.

If you can let go of your need for a sympathetic character and your belief that women should be likeable, there’s a lot to enjoy and a lot to think about here.

My one quibble would be that the Australian play sometimes loses its flow with word choices that just seem wrong delivered in a Canadian accent, but an interesting script and strong acting are more than enough to make up for that.
