SUP-A Series  – Sassy One-Of-A Kind Theatre – August 1 – 12, 2017

An interesting new series being featured at Havana Theatre.  Un-produced Projects brings together an eclectic mix of up-beat theatre, never before seen in Vancouver.  Participants involved in this project wish to promote more local and independent theatre. So they will be a showcasing a different one-of-a-kind show each evening for 12 days from August 1 to 12, save for Sunday, August 6th which show will be at 2:00 pm.

Game of Thrones – August 4 + 5, 2017

Fans of Game of Thrones may wish to check out the Rio Theatre this Friday or Saturday night, your pick.   They will be showing The Hodor Rises at 8:00 pm both evenings.

Workshop Build Your Own Trunk – August 5, 2017

Spend the day working with an wood working educator that will walk you through the steps to make your own trunk.  This is a hands on class for which no experience is required.   You get to choose from 4 designs and cost is pretty darn reasonable.  To register, visit Eventbrite.

Opening Artist Reception  – August 9, 2017

The Cultch Gallery invites you to an opening reception featuring art from The Art Studios and paintings by Julia Russell.  Event runs from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and is open to everyone. If you miss opening reception, the exhibit runs till September 2nd.

Fundraiser for Red Cross BC Wildfire Relief Fund – August 10, 2017

12 Kings Pub at 395 Kingsway invites you to a fundraiser on Thursday, August 10th.  The evening will raise funds for the Red Cross BC Wildfire Relief Fund with a portion of every beer sold going towards the Red Cross. There will also be silent auction with some great items on hand. Again, all proceeds raised will go to the Red Cross. The evening also includes prizes such as JRFM prize pack, 50/50 draw and the opportunity to win 2 tickets to the Whistler Village Beer Festival.  Lots of breweries involved in this event. The Berlin Waltz Comes To The Havana Theatre One Night Only April 20th

DevonMoreIf you missed this amazing show at the Vancouver Fringe Festival or more recently at The Cultch, you will have one chance to catch it Thursday, April 20th at The Havana Theatre.  The Berlin Waltz is a one-woman show created by Devon More. She will share with you her tales from a 100 mile pilgrimage through the former border zone of the infamous Berlin Wall. You will hear Devon recount stories told over many glasses of beer and schnapps. Her story will touch on the ripple effects of the Cold War.  The evening includes humour, satire, sock puppets, paranoia, propaganda, slam poetry and live music.  This is not your average history lesson and with all the talk of a ‘wall’ south of the border, this history lesson couldn’t come at a better time.  The show begins at 8:00 pm in the Havana Theatre located in the Havana Restaurant, great spot for a bite before or after the show.  Cost of the show is Pay What You Can.

Almost A Stepmom At Havana Theatre March 14 – 18, 2017

almostastepmomHave you ever been a step parent? Thought about being a step parent? Maybe you are one. Having had the personal experience, it is not for the faint of heart. Thick skin and patience are two pre-requisites for this role, but like all paths in life, there are the challenges but also the rewards. This March, Standing Room Theatre Only brings you a one woman show Almost A Stepmom. It is the true story of Keara Barnes who moves to Ireland and becomes a stepmom, well almost.  This dark comedy shows you first hand the ups and downs of being a stepmom and brings you multiple characters including an attempted murder in this one woman show. Almost A Stepmom has received rave reviews at various festivals throughout Western Canada, most recently winning the Emerging Artist Award at the 2016 Calgary Fringe Festival. You catch the show at Havana Theatre on Commercial Drive between March 14 and 18. Tickets are $18 and available online from Brown Paper Tickets.

Bachelorette At Havana Theatre October 11-22,2016

bacheloretteYou are invited to check out what we expect will be a very entertaining black comedy about female friendship. Ben Bilodeau Productions brings Bachelorette to Havana Theatre October 11th to 22nd. This production written by Leslye Headland features a group of high school friends, Regan, Gena, Becky and Katie, who are now 10 years out of high school. Becky is getting married and the night before her wedding, the friends convene in a luxurious bridal suite. The evening starts off light and fun, but soon escalates into a night of debauchery that turns destructive.  The show touches on what can happen to those that grew up in the age of excess. Bachelorette kicks off on October 11th at Havana Theatre. Tickets are available from Brown Paper Tickets for $25 per person. For those wishing to take advantage of early bird pricing, you can save $3 by purchasing your ticket before October 5th.

Such A Heart As Yours At The Havana Theatre Sept. 28 – Oct. 1

SuchAHeartAsYoursGroupPhotoIf you love Shakespeare, this is the summer for you. There are lots of fun adaptions in Vancouver this summer. We’ve learnt of another coming this September called Such A Heart As Yours.  The Chambers Theatrical Society brings you a tale as old as time.  It goes a little something like this … “Paige is in love with Logan, Logan is in love with Paige, Holly is in love with Travis, Travis is in love with… wait, who is Travis in love with again? And what happened with Holly and Travis the night before they left? Cause they haven’t made eye contact since. So they’re all on a camping trip to the real life Forest of Arden for totally different reasons: for love, for inspiration, for that sweet English weed, but their first night isn’t the educational experience Holly had hoped it would be.  As night falls, everything changes. They start to wonder: is Midsummer just a play or is there a secret about this forest just miles away from Shakespeare’s boyhood home? Plus, Logan is acting really strange – is it magic… or something else? What will daylight bring?” The show runs from September 28th to October 1st at the Havana Theatre on the Drive. Tickets are available online for $25 each or $22 each for groups of 5 or more.  Fair warning or enticement, take it as you will, the show does contain coarse language, sexual content, magic, break ups, hook ups and general tomfoolery. Which personally we think sounds like a lot of fun.

The Best of Everything At The Havana Theatre July 14-16

BestofEverythingA fun new show called the Best of Everything begins a short run at the Havana Theatre starting July 14th.  This play is based on the book by Rona Jaffe and has been adapted by Julie Kramer. It is set in the 1950s and other adaptions have been compared to Mad Men complete with buttoned down men drinking scotch.  We are rather curious to see how this adaption comes together. This production features a line up of local talent including Joanie Beaulieu, Jenna Grossenbacher, Zachary Hayden, Laura Jacobson, Jennifer Kasun, Amy Rathgeber, Jacqueline Welbers and  Charles Lysne. If you wish to catch this show, it runs for 3 nights at Havana Theatre with a 1:30 pm show on July 16th.  Tickets are $15 and available online via Brown Paper Tickets. Note there is a students and seniors rate of $10. Best deal is the matinee on Saturday $5.

Bonnie & Clyde The Musical At Havana Theatre March 29 – April 9

bonnie-clydeA great passionate musical is now playing at the Havana Theatre. Bonnie & Clyde, the legendary outlaws of the Great Depression, are two of America’s biggest folk heros.  The show is based on the true story of these ill-fated lovers and is a fearless depiction of the couple’s wild passion and thirst for fame told through memorable music and relatable characters. From their very first meeting, Bonnie & Clyde are immediately connected by their desire to be bigger than their small town lives and they set off together to chase their dreams. When their reckless adventure goes awry, it sets them on a downward spiral with their friends and family following in tow. The musical also portrays the couple’s dark descent from dreams to destruction.  Bonnie & Cycle is now running at the Havana Theatre until April 9th.  Tickets are $25 and are available in advance from Eventbrite.

Wait Until Dark At The Havana Theatre March 1-12

WaitUntilDarkA masterfully woven thriller is coming to Havana Theatre, 1212 Commercial Drive, from March 1-12.   Local theatre company, Naked Goddess Productions, brings you Wait Until Dark written by Frederick Knott.  The play features a recently blinded, Susy Hendrix, who finds herself in the possession of a doll that a very sinister Roat is after.  Roat enlists two con men to assist him.  The show features secret identities, drug smuggling and a deadly cat and mouse game. Each suspenseful moment builds on the next until the final terrifying, breath stopping scene. Wait Until Dark previews March 1st, opens March 2nd and runs Tuesday to Saturday.  Tickets are available in advance for $20 online from Brown Paper Tickets or $25 at the door.

Dark New Comedy ‘All New People’ Comes To Havana Theatre January 17-30

AllNewPeopleHavanaA dark new comedy is coming to Havana Theatre this month called All New People.   Ben Bilodeau, an actor for many years in Vancouver, is making his directorial debut with this fast-paced 4 person play.  The play was created by actor/writer Zach Braff. If the name is not familiar, you may recall him as one of the ‘doctors’ on the TV sitcom Scrubs.  All New People opens with a young, disenchanted Charlie on a chair with an extension cord around his neck, intent on ending his life. Unknowingly, his plans are about to be put on hold with the unexpected arrival of a spiritually misguided, British real estate agent, a Thespian-turned-fireman and a dim-witted, but well-intentioned working girl.  Zach Braff brings you a perky, sitcom-style comedy that we hear is guaranteed to keep you laughing as these unlikely roommates open their hearts to each other and you. All New People runs from January 17 -30. Tickets are $20 and available online from Brown Paper Tickets.

52 Pick Up At The Havana Theatre November 13 – 29

52PickUpA very interesting show called 52 Pick Up is coming to the Havana Theatre, 1212 Commercial Drive. The premise is there are 52 scene titles written on a deck of cards that are thrown into the air.  As the performers pick up the cards, they perform the scenes, one by one, revealing a hilarious or maybe heartbreaking love story.  No two performances will are the same. The show  features comedian Dan Willows and Sarah Andrina Brown which we think should make for a fun evening.  52 Pick Up begins November 13th and runs till November 29th. Tickets are available online at Theatre Wire and range from $21 – $28 for adults and $18 -$23 for those under 30 and seniors.   There will also be two Pay What You Can Performances on November 15 and 22.  Come shuffle the deck.
