Vancouver-based blues and rock band Cobra Ramone is making their way across Western Canada to promote their new album Bang Bang. Tonight they return to Vancouver for their official launch at the Anza Club, 3 West 8th Avenue, in Mount Pleasant. The album which was recorded in Vancouver at Greenhouse Studios with up-and-coming producer Samuel Hewson Woywitka (Chin Injeti), Bang Bang is a five-song EP written by Cobra (axe, vocals) and Trevor Snakedust (organs, guitar, vocals) with additional assistance on arrangements by their drummer Pat Steward (Odds, Bryan Adams). The result is a blend of bluesy grit and greasy rock that will leave you lusting for more. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door for $10.

3rd Annual Spring Fling At The Biltmore Cabaret January 28th & 29th

The 3rd Annual String Fling concert takes place at the Biltmore Cabaret January 28th and 29th. This event is presented by Four on the Floor, a Vancouver-based string quartet. The line-up for this year’s String Fling includes Jim Byrnes, Ryan Guldemond, Dustin Bentall, Parker Bossley, Hannah Epperson, Dominique Fricot, Dan Moxon and Tonye Aganaba. Each artist will be performing three songs with the quartet and Four on the Floor will be playing original pieces and covers in between the sets. Tickets are $20 and available in advance at Red Cat Records, Zulu Records and hipcity.ca. Doors open at 7:00 pm, show begins at 8:00 pm. C.R. Avery Presents Some Birds Walk For The Hell Of It at Joe’s Café

The Georgia Straight presents local poet and singer-songwriter, C.R. Avery, in his rock show titled Some Birds Walk for the Hell of It on January 10th at Joe’s Café, 1150 Commercial Drive. CR Avery is a unique multi-talented one man band. His live performance has been described as the “Bob Dylan in the body of Iggy Pop” throw in a little Bestie Boys and Allen Ginsberg and you get the idea. He is above all fearless in whatever genre he undertakes which could be blues, hip-hop, spoken word or rock and roll. This Saturday he will be presenting his rock show which also features Melody Mangler and Violet Femme. Doors open at 8:00 pm and show gets under way at 9:00 pm. Tickets are $20 and available at the door only. If you miss this week’s show, C.R. Avery will also be performing January 17th, 24th and the 31st at Joe’s Café.

East Van GoGos Fundraiser Sunday October 19th Trout Lake Community Centre

The East Van GoGos invite you to their 6th Annual Jazz Brunch Sunday October 19th. What is a GoGo you might ask? Gogo is a Zulu word meaning “grandmother”. The Greater Van Gogos which includes chapters in various parts of the Lower Mainland are grandmothers and ‘grandothers’ working in groups to support African grandmothers raising a generation of children orphaned by AIDS. This network of grandmother groups in south western BC are dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
In March 2006, Stephen Lewis, a Canadian humanitarian and former UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, issued a call to Canadian grandmothers to bond with their African counterparts. In his travels, Lewis noticed the phenomenal grandmothers who had buried their adult children and stepped in to raise the orphans left behind. They needed money for school fees and uniforms, food and other necessities. In the Vancouver area, three women answered the call. They invited a few others and launched Greater Van Gogos in the summer of 2006 with four groups. Although grandmothers in Africa’s many countries are addressed in different ways – ja ja in Uganda, sho sho in Kenya or nyana in Zambia – the word gogo felt right. Many years later, there are 20 groups registered with approximately 600 members from Vancouver and the surrounding areas. Together they have raised more than $1 million for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The funds are distributed to community level projects supporting grandmothers and the children in their care in 15 sub-Saharan African countries.
The brunch on October 19th is a fundraiser for the East Van GoGos which will feature a musical performance by Brian Tate who will entertain you with some jazz, gospel and African music. Homemade brunch will be provided along with coffee, tea and juice. Suggested donation is $25. Limited seats for this event. Artful Sundays return to the Britannia Community Centre this summer. This is an outdoor visual arts market that begins Sunday, August 10th and will run every consecutive Sunday until August 31st. This event features local artists, live music, special events, artist demonstrations, workshops and more. Sara Chandler, the Sidewalk Cellist, will be on hand to provide some live music. Trout Lake Summer Outdoor Concert Series Begins July 2nd

The Trout Lake Community Center, 3360 Victoria Drive, begins their weekly free outdoor Summer Concert Series Wednesday, July 2nd at 6:30 p.m. with Deanna Knight & the Hot Club of Mars. This group will have you travelling back in time to the early jazz era of the 1920s and 1930s with some of Vancouver’s most eclectic gypsy-jazz ensembles. The following week, July 9th you will find the Sanctuary All Stars which is a 17 piece jazz band. July 16th Highrise Lonesome will entertain you with bluegrass music. July 23rd brings the Late Thaw Band playing country music which will be sure to pull a few heart strings. July 30th Robin Layne and Paul Bray team up for the first time for a duo collaboration of improvised music August 6th brings String Fever which is an eclectic string band with various influences including jazz, folk, Celtic, newgrass, classical and world to name but a few. August 13th the Jeff Stanfield Band is on deck with acoustic folk and blues. August 20th the Rio Samaya Band brings you original songs and poetry that combine Latin, reggae and rhumba. Lastly, on August 27th Kara-Kata Afrobeat Group brings you a mix of many sounds including reggae, Calypso, gospel, modern funk, jazz, blues, salsa and more.
All performances will be held on the East side of Trout Lake Community Centre. This year there will also be a BBQ and a kids art station. You are invited to bring a blanket, bring the family, your friends and come enjoy the music! Dancing is encouraged.

Car Free Day Sunday June 15th

Car Free Day began 10 years ago on Commercial Drive. The idea of organizers was to reclaim the streets and oppose highway expansion and more traffic. Today, organizers still believe that fewer cars equals more community. Car Free Day has now expanded to four neighbourhoods. The festival sites are 100% organized by local volunteers and each festival has a unique flavor and is a family friendly event. Lots to see and do for all ages. Commercial Drive (Venables to Grandview on Commercial Drive) Noon–7:00 pm
On the Drive, you can expect to find roller disco, parading drummers, healing gardens, DJs spinning tunes, the musical talents of Rhythm and Cello which will hold court at 7th Avenue starting at Noon.
Main Street (Broadway to 30th on Main Street) Noon–7:00 pm
On Main Street, you will find lots of mini-festivals, community-supported stages with dozens of bands, multiple kids zones, artisan markets, roller derby and skateboarding. While there, be sure to check out the new parklet at 21st Avenue and Main Street. We hear Brown Paper Packages will be located between 23rd and 24th with their delicious ice cream sandwiches. If you are a fan of honey and/or bees, Main Street Honey Shoppe will be the place to be Sunday afternoon. They will be holding honey extraction demonstrations from 1 – 5 pm with a live bee beard demonstration at 2:00 pm. Now that will be something to see.

Flash Mob Sketching Party In Grandview Park on June 14th

Britannia Community Centre invites you to a Flash Mob Sketching Party on June 14th in Grandview Park. The event is part of the city-wide annual Vancouver Draw Down 2014 and is called Flash Mob Sketchers. For those wishing to participate, you can expect to be involved in a series of short drawing sessions led by guest artist, James Melcher, and musical accompaniment by the Carnival Band. In case you aren’t familiar with the Carnival Band, it is an East Vancouver brass and drum explosion of community spirited musicians that have a love for calypso, samba, jazz and funk. There will also be other local artists on hand to help transform the walkway at Grandview Park into a long winding “canvas”. If you wish to participate, you are encouraged to bring easels, paper and pencils to sketch the local environment. This is an all ages event and no experience is necessary. This is also a free event with no registration required. Just show up and sketch what you see. The Flash Mob Sketching Party gets under way at 1:00 p.m. and goes until 2:00 pm in Grandview Park on Commercial Drive (between William and Charles Streets). Come out and draw!
