The Cultch Presents Out Of Order March 18 – 21, 2021

The Cultch invites you to a very different online experience with Out Of Order. This is a ground-breaking contemporary circus collective that features spectacular acrobatics from the Montreal based troupe 7 Fingers. During this past year, art has been transformed and this production highlights just that. With theatres empty, meeting places and cultural venues no longer permitted to open, physical contact prohibited, artists have been forced to meet secretly in forsaken spaces. The big top used to be a space where they practiced their craft but was achingly deserted. Out of Order showcases this post-apocalyptic setting with ten gloved and masked characters who scrutinize one another, prepare, approach and avoid contact. They come from all walks of life. These amazing performers forgotten during the pandemic, cling to their vocation and create an apocalyptic new reality. Free Virtual Performance of White Rabbit Red Rabbit March 13th

Do you remember Friday, March 13, 2020? We certainly do, it was when our daily lives changed, some sooner, some later, but this was a defining date for many. On this date, one year later, The Cultch is participating in a worldwide initiative to mark a year of theatre closures due to covid-19. On March 13, 2021, The Cultch along with its theatre community will be celebrating the resiliency of artists. An international company, Aurora Nova initiated this global event in which theatre companies around the world will stream performances of White Rabbit Red Rabbit. This is an award winning play from Iranian playwright, Nassim Solemanipour and performed by Amanda Sum. There are no rehearsals or director. The script is waiting in a sealed envelope on stage. The Cultch presents Mx February 18 – 24, 2021

The Cultch and Off The Corner Productions bring you a live streamed show to your living room February 18 – 24, 2021. You are invited to The Nancy Show where each night one lucky guest from the African Diaspora is granted a unique opportunity to reconnect to their ancestors. This is where you will find Max, a gender-questioning and mixed-race introvert, who has hopes of gaining insight into their African ancestry, and finding a better understanding of where they fit in the Black community. Max is seeking answers to some of life’s major questions – What of culture and ancestry lives within us, and how much is determined by our upbringing? Does blood equal belonging?—Max meets the famed Mz Nancy, our host for the night. Witty and glamorous, Nancy seems to have an answer for everything… but, as Max discovers, things are never black and white. 

Mx is written by an emerging playwright Lili Robinson which is inspired by personal experience. Robinson was “Raised in Vancouver by my white Canadian mother, I grew up with little connection to the city’s Black community, which was at that time particularly small in number. It was not until late into my teens, witnessing the onslaught of police murders of unarmed Black people in the States, that I was unavoidably confronted with the question, ‘Where do I fit?’ Robinson goes on to say that . “Doing this show means being able to engage frankly with dynamics around the consumption of Black culture, the politics of mixed-race identity, and white folks’ engagement, or lack thereof, with the topic of race.”   To pick up your tickets, visit The Cultch.

Love Songs With Jill Barber February 14th

The Cultch along with The National Arts Centre invite you for an evening of live music by Jill Barber this Valentine’s Day. Jill will be performing some heartbreak ballads, steamy love songs and classic French chansons. The event will be live streamed from The Cultch to your living room. You can get dressed up for the occasion, or well not. Entirely your call. As with most celebrations this past year, Valentine’s Day will be a little different. This is a great way to support local arts and take in some beautiful music. Did you miss The Cultch’s presentation of A Craigslist Cantata in November? You are in luck, it’s back for a short run February 5 – 7, 2021. If you haven’t already heard about this fun virtual show it’s your personal ads set to music and streamed to your living room. You are invited to join a cast of wild and wacky characters from the Craigslist community as they attempt to buy and sell online, all the while longing and searching for human connection. Do You Want What I’ve Got? A Craigslist Cantata. The production touches on social isolation and is live-streamed from The Cultch’s Historic Theatre. You can expect a witty and poignant exploration of physical distancing along with original songs such as 300 Stuffed Penguins, Chili Eating Buddy and Decapitated Dolls. The production features the incredibly talented local cast including, Meaghan Chenosky, Josh Epstein, Chirag Naik, Amanda Sum, Andrew Wheeler and choreography by Amanda Testini. Holiday Favourite East Van Panto Goes Digital This December

One of our favourite things in December is attending the East Van Panto at The Cultch. It’s always good fun with lots of laughs for all ages. And honestly couldn’t we all use a few more laughs this year? For its 8th season, Theatre Replacement’s Artistic Directors James Long and Maiko Yamamoto are bringing the production digital direct to your living room.

In 2020’s Panto Come Home!  Artistic Directors James Long and Maiko Yamamoto sneak into the York to find a very sad pyjama clad Veda Hille parked at her piano. Seems she’s moved into the theatre and has been spending her days trying to relive Panto memories of old. In an attempt to cheer her up they call up a bunch of their favourite Panto friends to sing and dance her best East Van Panto hits. Things go sideways fast when the Phanto of the Panto swoops in. He’s been watching these things ever since Jack and the Beanstalk opened the York 8 years ago and has a few choice ideas on how to make this year’s Panto really work. We hear physically-distanced antics then ensue.

Expect a silly production as favourites from Pantos past come together to remix the best of the last seven Pantos into a brand new holiday extravaganza. From the ‘Cheese Song’ to the BC Ferry Godmother, Panto Come Home! is guaranteed fun for the whole family. Call To Artists: The Cultch Gallery Seeks Artists For 2020/2021 Gallery Season

The Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, has put out a call to visual artists to submit applications to exhibit their work during their 2020/2021 gallery season. Each exhibition will run for 3 to 5 weeks between August 2020 and June 2021. Submissions can be single or multiple artists’ proposals.

The Cultch has built a reputation over the past 40 years as one of Western Canada’s most innovative and exciting presenting venues. The mandate of The Cultch is to contribute to the enrichment of the city and community’s social and cultural life through the presentation of innovative programs of contemporary music, theatre, dance and visual arts by established and emerging artists.

The Cultch Gallery is a multi-use space and not a traditional art gallery as it also serves as the lobby for performances and is occasionally used for meetings and other small events. Due to the diverse nature of this space, submissions that include sculptures or free standing art will not be accepted.  Further, they will only be able to show works that hang from their gallery ‘rail’ system that does not have a depth of more than 12″.

Submission Criteria for Artists:

  1. An artist statement
  2. Artist bio(s)
  3. Resume/CV
  4. A complete list of images you are submitting, which should include title, size, medium. These images do not have to be the work you will be showing. They want to get a good overview of your work.
  5. You can submit up to 10 images and not necessarily the images you plan on showing, but so they get a sense of the range of work you do. Image files should be in .jpeg format. No PDFs. File names must include the artist name, title of artwork and size of the work when framed: (example: Yuri Arajs – Sunny Day -18 in x 30 in. jpg). Images should be 300 dpi.

Women’s Winter Faire – Heritage Hall – December 21 and 22

Sounds and Furies presents the Women’s Winter Faire at Heritage Hall this Saturday and Sunday. The Women’s Winter Faire has been running for 25 years and features over 50 booths of creative, funky, beautiful, ecologically-sound and diverse items perfect for gift giving.  Event runs 11:00 am to 5:00 pm both days and admission is by donation $3 to $5 suggested with proceeds going to a local charity.

VoiceStory Live ‘Family’ – The Cultch – December 22

VoiceStory exists to provide a safe, positive space where any adult, regardless of age, gender, race or sexual orientation, can share a moment of their lives and inspire others.   This event is not about promoting a business, pitching you a product or trying to sign you up for a program. It is about putting away our cell phone and listening to and being with others. People tell stories about life, fear, great adventures and more.  This Sunday’s topic is Family.   Special General Admission price this Sunday so you can bring your family with you $15 per person.

Twisted Christmas Party (The Wrong Show) – Waldorf Hotel – December 22

A group of local female comedians take the stage this Sunday at the Waldorf Hotel to bring you a Twisted Christmas Party.  The features the likes of Mrs. Santa Claus, It’s A Wonderful Leaf (vs. Life) and The East Van Grinch.  Expect a crazy apron contents, post show dancing. Looking to take in a classic Christmas movie on the big screen?  The Rio Theatre is showing It’s A Wonderful Life this Sunday at 3:30 pm.

East Van Panto: Pinocchio – The York – On Now Until January 5, 2020

Our favourite holiday tradition is now on at the York Theatre until January 5th.  Take in this fun and entertaining show that is fun for all ages. Just remember if you are in the front row, you might become part of the production. This year’s panto is Pinocchio and touches on some unique aspects in East Van, such as the mysterious Beckwoman and the coffee wars on The Drive for starters. Do you love cartoons? Miss those Saturday morning cartoons you used to watch as a kid. Do you know Storm Crow Tavern offers cartoons Saturday morning from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm whilst you enjoy breakfast/brunch?

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, no cover.

Vancouver Brewery Tour – East Van Brewery Tour

Vancouver Brewery Tours does great brewery tours in and around East Vancouver and is a perfect gift for the beer lover.  Vancouver Brewery Tours has  regularly scheduled brewery tours which run approximately 3 hours.

Off The Eaten Track – Culinary Tours

Off The Eaten Track offers a number of culinary tours including Railtown Urban Eats Tour and Olympic Village Tour. Tours all begin at the Waterfront Station and times vary but are approximately 2 ½ hours for each.
