Our weekly feature What’s On East Van sets out some cool events for the upcoming week.   Beyond the week, we invite you to check out our Event Listing which is updated daily and features events for the month and beyond.

FIFA – The World Cup

FIFA World Cup Soccer continues which means many local spots will be featuring games. Some of those include The Libra Room featuring games after 10:30 a.m. Portuguese Club will open early for all Portugal matches, but just a reminder that members get first dibs on seats/space.  The Vancouver Alpen Club will be open 30 minutes before kick off and beer flows early at 9:00 am. There is a $5 cover charge at The Alpen Club. St. Augustine’s is regularly featuring sporting events.

Playland Nights – PNE – June 22nd

Playland Nights kicks off this Friday June 22nd at 7:00 pm.  Playland will be again hosting 6 summer evenings dedicated to adults only (meaning 19+).  There will be beverages, alcoholic and non, midway games, rides, DJs spinning tunes with a definite party theme. New this year is also a burlesque show and the opportunity to test your lumber Jack/Jill skills with axe-throwing which we understand there’s an extra charge to participate in.   Tickets are $31 in advance or $34 at the gate.  We learnt these events sold out last year, so want to attend, hop to it.

What Ifs – The Cultch – June 23rd

Who hasn’t asked themselves at one time or another ‘what if’ I’d done this or that. Your life could or can take a different trajectory.   Interesting feature at The Cultch this Saturday asking the What If question. What if you got on a plane today? What If you made the first move? What If you said yes?   You are invited to come sit and dream about places and experiences not yet lived.  Life is a journey with many possible paths. It’s easy to get stuck in one path which then becomes comfortable.   Are you stuck?  What if you attended Saturday and it changed your path? There are 2 sessions this Saturday at 3:00 and 7:00 pm. Tickets are $23 in advance or $20 at the door.

Summer Solstice – Mountain View Cemetery – June 23rd

Little Chamber Music is hosting their 4th Annual Summer Solstice Celebration ta Mountain View Cemetery, 5455 Fraser Street, this Saturday, June 23rd.  This is a free family friendly event with music, art and dance. This year they are partnering with Birds! Birds! Birds! which means there will be bird origami and flute players recreating bird song whilst watching bird stilt walkers.   You are invited to bring your lawn chairs, or a blanket and get settled in between 6:00 – 7:00 pm. Singing begins at 7:00 pm with other activities to follow until 9:00 pm. For more information, visit their Facebook page.

Middle Eastern Celebration – Trout Lake Community Centre – June 24th

You are invited to a Middle Eastern Celebration happening at Trout Lake Community Centre this Sunday, June 24th.  Join them for henna, dance, arts and craft, theatre performances and more.  Festivities happen from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm. Participation is free, but food will be available for $7.00. Registration is requested.

Our Social Fabric – Textile Sale – June 24th

Our Social Fabric, a textile recycling initiative is having a sale this Sunday, June 24th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  For those that sew or do crafts, there are some amazing deals. Come early for best selection. Sale happens at 1275 Venables Street, Suite #270.

Zumba & Beer – Andina Brewing Co. – June 24th

ZOOMbeer is back at Andina Brewing Co, 1507 Powell Street. this Sunday, June 24th.  Class gets under way at 11:00 am followed by a flight or glass of beer. Cost is $20. Registration through Zumba Vancouver.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

If you love Star Trek and burlesque, then the Rio Theatre has you covered this Friday and Saturday, Geekenders present a Star Trek Burlesque Show both nights at 8:00 pm. If you are looking for live music, Cumbia Galeria with Joshua Job will be at Café Deux Soleils this Saturday night specializing in Latin music.  Three farmer markets are happening this weekend. Saturday it’s Riley Park (10 am – 2 pm) and Trout Lake (9 am – 2 pm) and Sunday, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is back at Dude Chilling Park from 10:00 am till 2:00 pm.  To see more of what’s on in East Vancouver, check our Event Listing.

East Van Crusher – Maritime Labour Centre – May 25th

Vancouver Craft Beer Week kicks off with the East Van Crusher at the Maritime Labour Centre Friday, May 25th.  This action packed event features a wide array of canned beer and semi-famous local personality, Grant Lawrence, who will be opening the 10 day event.  To keep everyone entertained during the evening, there will be live music by Alex Maher and JD Hebegebe.  Tickets are $25 which includes admission and 2 beers. ROVE: Mount Pleasant Art Walk – May 26th

ROVE is a free community event that takes place on Saturday, May 26th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Studios and galleries in Mount Pleasant open their doors and invite you to come check out a variety of artists. To see which spots are participating, visit ROVE’s Facebook page

Cedar Cottage Community Garden Spring Fling – Cedar Cottage May 26th

Cedar Cottage Community Garden is hosting their 10th Annual Spring Fling this Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  This free community event will feature live music and garden tours.  Live plants and food will be available for sale.  Many local businesses will be participating in the event which also provides organizers the opportunity to raise some funds for special projects. Stop by and show your support. You can’t miss the community garden when driving along Victoria Drive, it’s where the Victoria Diversion starts before/after it changes to Commercial Drive.

Sing The Clash – Strange Fellows Brewing – May 26th

Strange Fellows Brewing is hosting the Impromptu Rock Choir this Saturday and they are going to be singing “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” by The Clash.  Entry is free with the purchase of a beer, or $5.00 donation to the Food Bank.  Event happens between 7:00 and 9:00 pm.

Parker Art Salon – 1000 Parker Street – May 26th & 27th

Parker Art Salon now in its 4th year happens at 1000 Parker Street this Saturday and Sunday.  It is a great opportunity to see the working space and art of over 200 artists including sculptors, painters, designers, furniture builders and much more.   The building itself is pretty iconic at over 100 years old.  This is a free event open to everyone and happens from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

 

Clothing Swap – Wise Hall – May 27th

Do you have clothes that you don’t wear? Maybe they are new, maybe just gently worn, but the fit or colour wasn’t quite right.  Either way, how about revamping your wardrobe in an eco-friendly way? A Clothing Swap happens this Sunday, May 27th at the Wise Hall. Cost is $10 to participate.  You drop your clothes off between 12:30 and 1:00 pm pay your $10 and you can shop and pick up new treasures until 3:00 pm.

Looking for comedy? Local comedian, Graham Clark, hosts his Laugh Gallery event Monday at Havana Theatre 9 pm.  Three farmer markets are happening this weekend. Saturday it’s Riley Park (10 am – 2 pm) and Trout Lake (9 am – 2 pm) and Sunday, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market kicks off at 10:00 am till 2:00 pm at Dude Chilling Park. Metamorfest Happens In Mount Pleasant September 26th

Metamorfest2015SmallMetamorfest will be hitting the streets this Saturday, September 26th from Noon to 6:00 pm.  The festival is located on two blocks – one north of East Broadway on Fraser Street and one south of East Broadway on Prince Albert Street. The day will include live music, a whole host of activities and booths for children as well as a bouncy castle. There is something for all ages at this event. A couple of fun activities planned to keep an eye out for include Zumba and Laughter Yoga in the park.

The Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House will also be hosting activities inside their building on the corner of Broadway and Prince Albert Street. The Broadway Youth Resource Centre and Vancouver Native Housing will hold some activities just outside their locations on the corner of Broadway and Fraser. As well, there will be 3 stages with live music featuring local artists and bands. You can expect everything from hip hop to jazz. A full schedule of events is available at Metamorfest.

MetamorFest Community Festival in Mount Pleasant September 27th

You are invited to Metamorfest, 800 East Broadway, on Saturday, September 27th from Noon – 6:00 pm.  This is an annual community festival that celebrates the diverse Mount Pleasant community. They will showcase all the best aspects of this neighbourhood including the local businesses and organizations that strive to make this a great neighbourhood.  The festival will take place on two street blocks: one north of East Broadway on Fraser Street to Sahalli Park and one south of East Broadway on Prince Albert Street. Connecting the two streets on East Broadway will be an art walk brought to you by the Broadway East Art Walk. The Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House will also be hosting activities inside their building on the corner of Broadway and Prince Albert Street. Likewise, the Broadway Youth Resource Centre and Vancouver Native Housing will do so in their brand new building on the corner of Broadway and Fraser.

Metamorfest will have live music on 3 different stages, an art walk, and many activities and booths for children, seniors, and everyone in between. Organizations and businesses have booked booths that will line each of the streets. Each booth will also have an activity to go along with it. There will also be a Silent Auction going on throughout the event which include some fantastic donations.  Or you can come and enjoy a workshop on Zumba and Laughter Yoga or just check out all the great things that Mount Pleasant has to offer as you wander the streets and listen to great local artists and bands. For those that get hungry, there will be a couple of food trucks on hand on day as well as a BBQ provided by Buy-Low Foods.  Everyone is welcome to attend this free event that is fun for all ages.

Zumba Fitness Classes Start On January 8th at River District

Join Gajing Lau, former figure skater and certified fitness trainer, for Zumba fitness classes starting January 8th at River District, 8682 Kerr Street, in SE Vancouver.  Zumba combines Latin and international music with upbeat easy-to-follow dance steps for a fun workout.  Classes include all levels of salsa, swing, bellydance, Bollywood and more.  The routines feature aerobic interval training with fast and slow rhythms to help you get into better shape.  Classes run on Wednesdays from 5:00 – 6:00 pm starting January 8th and running to January 29th. Cost is $10 per class (cash or cheque requested). Note, classes are capped at 15 participants, so it is recommended that you arrive early to avoid disappointment.
