9 Aug

HawkersMarketAugust10

The Hawkers Market is a monthly recurring underground event that showcases local food and music.   They support local food entrepreneurs and give them a hawker stand (or pop up food stall) to sell their products.  The event is billed as a dining, shopping and social experience.  There will be many opportunities to eat food at the market and since there are so many great choices, you just might have to take a few treats home with you. The  Hawkers Market takes place at the East Van Studio located at 870 East Cordova Street this Saturday, August 10th starting at 6:00 p.m.  Tickets are $10.00 in advance and available at EventBrite, or $15 at the door.  There will be many locals hawking their wares including:

The Wonton Girl
Curious Oyster
Pella’s Gourmet
Chef Steve of NFA
Peak to Blume
TruckFarm.ca
Nice Pops
D Original Sausage
Dolce Delights
Brown Paper Packages Ice Cream
Looters Lemonade
Storm Brewing Craft Beer
Living Lotus
Palki Sula Chaat

This is definitely an event worth checking out. If you are not able to make this event, you can follow them on Twitter @hawkersmarket to keep an eye out for their next date.

Keep The Wise Alive August 9th

8 Aug

KeepWiseAlive2 The WISE Social and Athletic Club was created in 1958 as a members’ club for expatriates from Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England. It  was incorporated as a non-profit society in 1961 and purchased its home on Adanac in 1963. The WISE has hosted many events over the years including weddings, fundraisers, theatre, yoga, concerts and more recently home to some regulars like the Eastside Flea and Screaming Chicken Burlesque Society.

The Wise Hall is located at 1882 Adanac Street just off Venables next to some residential areas, so there is delicate balance between supporting a historic part of Vancouver and noise concerns from neighbouring residents. The Wise Hall has been working hard to address the concerns and will be holding a fundraiser to help them achieve their goals.   This Friday, August 9th, they will be holding a fundraiser “Keep The Wise Alive” which will feature The Odds, The Palomars, Big Top and the Screaming Chicken Burlesque Society.   Also on hand, a silent auction with prizes from Red Cat Records, Perryscope Concerts, Trees Ironworks, Feldman & Associates concert tickets and much more. Tickets are available for $25 in advance at Brown Paper Tickets or $30 at the door.    The venue has been an institution in East Van for over 50 years.  As such, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation will be dedicating a Places That Matter plaque to the Wise Hall at this Friday’s fundraiser. Come out and help Keep The Wise Alive!

History Walk With James Johnstone Saturday, August 3rd

1 Aug

JamesJohnstoneEast End from Dufferin Street 1890s

Join James Johnstone this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. for a historical walking tour of Vancouver’s Milltown – Strathcona North of Hastings. The largely industrialized area of the Strathcona North of Hastings is the oldest part of the city of Vancouver. The point of land on the north foot of Dunlevy where Captain Edward Stamp established Vancouver’s first industry, the Hastings Mill (originally the Vancouver Island Spar, Lumber & Sawmill Co.) in 1865, was known as Kumkumalay (“big leaf maple trees”).

You will learn many interesting facts on this tour such as Vancouver’s first Mayor, Malcolm A. MacLean, as well as world-renowned theoretical physicist Shuichi Kusaka (a protégé of Albert Einstein) both lived on the 300-block of East Cordova Street. One of the oldest houses still standing in Vancouver, the Thomas Dunn house, is on the north side of the same block. James promises this is a tour like no other and will bring along a binder filled with old archival images of houses, buildings and people from days gone by.

The walk departs from 611 Alexander Street at the north foot of Princess Avenue and runs for 2 hours. The cost is $20 per person. To reserve your spot, email James directly at historywalks@gmail.com. If you can’t make it this Saturday, this walk is being offered again on September 21st.

Epiphany is a breathtaking series of life-size cedar sculptures, carved from trees which fell during the 2007 Vancouver storms. The series depicts plant spirits inspired by McKinnon’s nine years travelling in South America. With incredible physical presence, these statues reflect the role of narrative and image in the construction of cognition, identity, and belief.

To launch their new 2013/2014 season, The Cultch Gallery will also be announcing the names of all 23 artists that have been selected for this season. You are invited to come by for a lively night of art this Thursday from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
