Dante Comoglio’s exhibit is titled “Yes-No and Horizons”.  The Yes-No project offers a series of interactive yes-no switches to the audience, creating a very personal relationship with the viewer, while Horizons is a photo-based series that explores the duality of the horizon, a subject of interest in Comoglio’s art.    The opening reception takes places this Wednesday, August 28th between 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.   The exhibit will run until September 28, 2013 and is available for viewing Monday to Friday from Noon – 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from Noon – 4:00 p.m.

Don’t Forget Your Pants On Now At The Havana Theatre

18 Jul

Don'tForgetYourPantsShare Production brings you a fun filled comedy Don’t Forget Your Pants at the Havana Theatre, 1212 Commercial Drive. This is an original play with colourful characters, witty dialogue and absurd situations. You follow the misadventures of four characters as they struggle to assert themselves in society.

The play contains three major narratives that weave together. After making a series of questionable decisions, Chauncey touches on a moral core that he has ignored for years. Lewis, neurotic and insecure, tests the limits of his relationship with Serena and his unreasonable demands.  Serena only wants to get married. Meanwhile, Todd, just wants a hug.

The play is satirical, comical and at times savage but is essentially light hearted fun. It deals with morality, friendship, loneliness and compromise in relationships. It is on now at Havana Theatre  until July 27th.  Show starts at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available through www.brownpapertickets.ca.

Ironclad Art Exhibition – Vote for People’s Choice

30 May

IroncladArtThe City of Vancouver recently held a design contest for manhole covers that was open to any artist.   It was an opportunity for artists to flex their creative muscle, whether you were 6 years of age or 60.  The winning artist has the opportunity to have their artwork immortalized on city streets for up to 100 years.  How’s that for staying power?   The aim of the contest was to solicit submissions that assisted in increasing awareness of our environmental impact on the water ways while at the same time distinguishing the two separate sewer systems, one being sanitary and one being storm/rainwater.   Our sewers play in important part in keeping local waters healthy. Many everyday items such as fertilizers and pesticides used in gardens can harm the water’s ecosystem.   Each year, the City of Vancouver replaces 14 kilometres of old sewer mains with two new pipes, one for stormwater run-off and one for sanitary. Upgrading sewers to two separate pipes will eliminate the overflow of sewage into Vancouver’s waterways. Wherever you see two sewer manholes in the streets you know that the neighbourhood’s sewer system is up to date and contributing to a greener Vancouver.

This year’s contest received over 1,000 submissions. The winners of the Manhole Cover Design Challenge will be announced on June 1st. All the submissions are viewable online or in person at the Interurban Gallery, 1 East Hastings Street, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. until June 8th.  Also, until June 8th, you can vote for the People’s Choice award online. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be announced on June 10th. After viewing some of the submissions, which are quite amazing in their diversity, I must say I have an affinity for some prepared by a few 6 years old that ask that we keep our oceans clean.  It will be interesting to see what the jury decides and what the people decide as there are so many great submissions.   Don’t forget to vote for your People’s Choice by June 8th.

Clockwork Universe – A Steampunk Art Happening At Havana Gallery April 28th

24 Apr

SteampunkArtHappening

Avenue for/des Arts is a Vancouver not-for-profit visual arts group that is presenting  Clockwork Universe – A Steampunk Art Happening on Sunday, April 28th at the Havana Gallery, 1212 Commercial Drive. What is Steampunk you might ask?  Wikipedia describes it as:

“… any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures, that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, and films from the mid-20th century.Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical “steampunk” style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.”

Think science fiction and futuristic then throw in some Victorian dress, fantasy and maybe a little technofantasy imagery.  This weekend’s opening show will explore Steampunk ideas and icons. The show will also feature 14 pieces of Steampunk-influenced art as well as  local musicians and performers. To round out the experience, Vancouver Alternative Fashion will be presenting a Steampunk Fashion Parade of local designers.   Everyone is encouraged to participate and come dressed in their Steampunk finery. The art show runs from April 26th to May 7th. The opening and cabaret happens this Sunday, April 28th from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
