Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to Sawyer. Sawyer is a 5 year old male Pit Bull Cross and is a very active boy. This boy would love nothing more than to accompany you on your outdoor adventures. Sawyer is super smart dog that will require some mental stimulation to keep his mind busy. His friends at the SPCA think Sawyer would do well with agility or nosework, but then he also loves play time with his toys. We understand that Sawyer can get over stimulated and become jumpy and mouthy, therefore, a home without children is best. Sawyer does need a confident, dog-savvy guardian with behaviour experience to help him reach his amazing potential. He is also learning to love his crate and with a bit more practice will be able to use his crate as his own personal safe space. Sawyer is okay with dogs and may do well in a home with a friend though he can get a bit amorous with the female canines. He seems to find cats a little too fun to chase so a home with felines, likely would not be best. Sawyer has an infectious personality and a tail that wags at the speed of light. You are invited to come down to the Vancouver SPCA and meet this handsome boy. If you think you could give Sawyer a forever home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter would love to hear from you. You can find them at 1205 East 7th Avenue or by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca. As always, we welcome any shares to help find Sawyer find his forever home.

Rescue Me: Bruce A Rottweiler & Husky Cross Looking For His Forever Home
3 Aug
Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely playful boy named Bruce. Bruce is a young male Rottweiler and Husky Mix. If you happen to be looking for someone to head into the great outdoors with, Bruce is your guy. He loves going for hikes, swims and car rides. Bruce needs a dog savvy guardian though with some time and patience. His new guardian will need to continue working with Bruce on his obedience training as well as slow departure exercises to help reduce his separation anxiety. His friends at the Vancouver SPCA say that Bruce has been learning how to properly introduce himself and interact with other dogs, but will require someone that can continue working on this to keep up his great progress. Bruce is currently being fostered and has been waiting for his forever home for over 50 days. Bruce would really like a forever home he can call his own. If you think you can give Bruce a new home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. What You Can Do To Help Urban Wildlife In This Heat Wave
21 Jul
As you might imagine this record heat wave is making it tough on some of Vancouver’s urban wildlife. A recent Province article highlights the issue. It states that Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association co-founder Karen Duncan is reporting that they are seeing more stray cats in very poor shape due to dehydration. As they have no rain water, they like have little or nothing to drink. If you suspect there are feral or stray cats in your neighbourhood, Karen suggests putting out a bowl of water.
It was also reported that some birds have landed in swimming pools and have become water logged. Karen at VOKRA suggests some residents put out bird baths to assist our feathered friends.
It seems even the bees could use our help. It has been recommended, that you set up a shallow pan of water with rocks or marbles for bees to have a drink. Seems if you add a scent, the bees will seek out water sources that are scented say the experts. If you want to learn more, check out Why Honey Bees Need Water.
If you see wildlife in distress, here are a few options:
If you see a feral/stray cat or kitten in distress, you can contact VOKRA by telephone at 604-731-2913 or by email at info@vokra.ca
To report an animal in distress (including wildlife), the BC SCPA’s toll free hotline is 1-855-6BC SPCA OR 1-855-622-7722. This call centre is open 7 days per week, Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm as well as Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. If there is an animal emergency outside of these hours, the BC SPCA states that you are to contact your local police department or RCMP.
If you see other wildlife, birds, raccoons in distress, contact the Wildlife Rescue Association in Burnaby at 604.526.7275.

Rescue Me: Genie Rottweiler Shepherd Cross Looking For Her Forever Home
10 Jun
Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely playful girl named Genie. Genie came to the Vancouver SPCA by way of the Drives for Lives program. She is a 5 year old Rottweiler German Shepherd cross and her friends at the Vancouver SPCA think she will have you wrapped around her paw in no time. Genie is a cheeky playful girl with personality plus. She lived on a reserve in Prince Rupert and has had a few litters and although a fantastic mom to all her pups, her friends at the SPCA now think it’s time for her to be babied a bit. Genie loves people of all shapes and sizes. She can be a bit reactive to other dogs so she needs a dog-savvy guardian who is able to work with her on this. Genie has likely never lived inside of a home environment, but she has quickly discovered that she loves everything about it. She particularly likes tossing her toys around the SPCA’s reception area and rolling around their couch. Nothing is off limits for Genie and she is quite comical at times so sure to bring her new guardians lots of joy. The Vancouver SPCA does feel her new guardians will need to work with her on some basic obedience training and gradual departure exercises as she may initially be anxious in her new environment. She is known to be an escape artist, so leash walks or a home with a fully fenced yard is a must. Her friends at the Vancouver SPCA also think it’s best that she be the only pet in the household so she get the undivided love and attention she deserves. If you think you can give Genie a new home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. You can reach the Vancouver SPCA by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca. As always, we are grateful for those that share this information.
Rescue Me: Denny A Young Tabby Cat Looking For His Forever Home
18 May
Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to Denny. Denny is a 2 year old brown and white tabby. He came to the Vancouver SPCA Shelter as a stray, abandoned by his owner. Denny didn’t take well to life in a shelter. As soon as they found him a foster home though, he started to thrive in a loving home. Denny currently lives with other foster cats and a dog. He’s a wee bit nervous around the dog, but we hear that he seems to get a little braver each day. His foster family says that Denny has been a little skittish while adjusting to a new environment, but improving daily and loves affection. He loves to head butt and will come back to you for frequent pets if you sit down and welcome him. Denny we hear is also a chatty boy, he likes to tell you about his day. His foster family and friends at the Vancouver SPCA think Denny would not be suited in a home with small children who could easily frighten him. If you think you could give Denny a forever home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. They will be happy to connect you with the foster family so you can meet Denny. You can reach the Vancouver SPCA by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca.
UPDATED June 8, 2015 – We are pleased to report Denny has found his forever home.
Rescue Me: Toby and Zoe Looking For Their Forever Home
13 Apr
Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely bonded pair of dogs, Toby and Zoe. This sweet pair are 9 (Toby) and 8 (Zoe) years of age and each are a Chihuahua cross. As it is harder to place two dogs together, these too have been in foster care for some time and would REALLY like a forever home to call their own. Toby is a friendly, social guy. His foster family says that he may show a bit of fear in new situations, but it doesn’t take him long to warm up and become your new best friend. Zoe on the other hand is a quiet girl. She is a bit shy at first, but her foster family says once she knows you, your lap will be her favourite place. Toby and Zoe are currently living with other cats and dogs and are happy in that environment. They are both accustomed to having people around the most of the time. Thus, an adult-only home with people who are retired or people that work from home would be best for this pair. If you are interested in meeting Toby and Zoe, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter would love to hear from you. The staff is more than happy to make the arrangements. You can reach them by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca. As always, we thank you in advance for sharing this information to help Toby and Zoe find their forever home.

14 Feb
Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to Hyde. Hyde is a young adult Siamese Cross that is a bundle of energy and lots of fun. The Vancouver SPCA is seeking an active guardian for this cool cat. Hyde was found in someone’s backyard shed where he had been taking up residence for a week or so. He is a very exuberant young cat and needs plenty of stimulation and activity to keep him feeling entertained. His friends at the Vancouver SPCA think he will bore easily so his new home should be spacious and his owners should be home often. This boy loves to play and is quite fine with being the life of the party. Note Hyde does crave outdoor access and his friends at the Vancouver SPCA have been working on harness training with him and he is loving it! In typical Siamese fashion Hyde is bold, chatty, hilarious, and cuddly. This boy has loads of purrsonality and would make a great kitty comedian. We are thinking possible YouTube star material here! Rescue Me: Decost Is The Cat’s Meow And Is Looking For His Forever Home
1 Feb
Welcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a sweet boy named Decost. He is a 9 year old short hair cat that has personality plus. Decost has been hanging out at the Vancouver SPCA for 60 days now. His meow is a raspy sounding thing which will be sure to keep you entertained. Decost loves his treats and is responding to clicker training. His friends at the Vancouver SPCA say he will be shaking a paw soon. Decost is best-suited to a cat-saavy adult home. He is accustomed to indoor/outdoor living, so a good fit would be with someone that is willing to safely introduce him to supervised outdoor outings. Although the shelter is better than being a stray, Decost is a tad bored at the shelter and would really like his forever home. Could it be yours? If so, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. Stop by for a visit anytime. If you would like more information about Decost, the Vancouver SPCA would love to hear from you. You can reach them by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca. Rescue Me: Roman A Neapolitan Mastiff Cross Looking For His Forever Home
18 JanWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a sweet boy named Roman. He is a Neapolitan Mastiff Cross who is 5 years old. Roman was surrendered to the Vancouver SPCA because his people could not care for him properly. Upon his arrival Roman was severely underweight, but has now gained some weight and is already at 125 pounds and gaining. He has been recently neutered and had surgery to his eyes to correct inward growing eyelashes. Roman is a social, friendly and calm dog. The Vancouver SPCA is looking for a special home for this boy. He requires people who are familiar with the breed and/or large dogs. Roman as you might expect at 125 pounds is a strong dog and not suitable for a frail guardian. Roman is a wee bit nervous around lots of traffic and loud trucks thus a home that is in a quieter area would be best for him. He has not lived with other animals so the Vancouver SPCA thinks he would be best suited for being your one and only at home. One disclaimer, you must be prepared for a bit of drool, but in return you will receive extra love. Come meet this big sweetie at the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue. If you would like more information about Roman, the Vancouver SPCA would love to hear from you. You can reach them by telephone at 604-879-7721 or by email at vancouver@spca.bc.ca.
