Nicole Alivojvodic Reviews Power Ballad on Now Until January 26th At The Cultch

powerballadPerformed for the first time in Canada, Power Ballad is a shocking and explosive work that explores gendered narratives and the hidden ideologies in the language we use. Created and performed by Julia Croft, this one woman show all the way from New Zealand is loud and disturbing. But that’s the whole point – it’s a live art exhibit of feminist rage that seeks to deconstruct sexist linguistics and find a new articulation of femaleness.

This 50-minute show is not for everybody, and I strongly encourage anyone interested in going to read up on it beforehand so as not to be utterly confused. Nevertheless, Croft bravely confronts seemingly immovable patriarchal structures in this rallying production which she states “is about finding the cracks where resistance can begin”.

Much Ado About Nothing At The Cultch February 5 – 16, 2019

muchadoaboutnothingClassic Chic Productions brings Much Ado About Nothing to The Cultch this February, but with a little twist. Their signature on this new tale is that the production is an all female cast.  The story is set in a mesmerizing theatrical world with a deadly serious and at the same time sublimely ridiculous story line. It features soldiers in love and women confined by tradition. You are invited for a bold and playful romp through the extremes of desire and ambition, loyalty and redemption.   Tickets for this production are now available online through The Cultch.

Mixed Media Workshop – Heart Art – February 10th At Studio 580

loveartLocal artist, Tana Lynn, is hosting a mixed media workshop on Sunday, February 10th. The aim of this workshop is for you to create a personal gift of art for your loved one.  Something personal, made with heart is the way Valentine’s Day should be.   In this workshop, Tana Lynn, will lead you through a project that the whole class makes together, thus it will be the same piece. After that, you will be free to create your own unique art piece. Thus, you will be leaving with not 1, but 2 pieces of art.  No experience is necessary for this workshop and all supplies will be included. Cost is $85.00 and registration is available through Eventbrite. Event takes place at Studio 580 at 580 Clark Drive.

The Comic Strippers At The York Theatre January 26, 2019

You are invited to a very different kind of show at the York Theatre on Saturday, January 26th.  A group of male improvisational comedians will perform a male stripper routine and improv sketches while at the same time singing, dancing, gyrating and laughing it up with the crowd.  This show is a semi-undressed and completely unscripted production. The Comic Strippers take off their shirts and take on your suggestions to create a whole new genre of comedy.  We expect this to be a fun filled night.  Tickets are $39 and available online through The Cultch. Note, this show is for a 19+ audience.

They are offering you the best in Italian culture, cuisine and craft beer with their Italian Brewery and Culinary Tour. The tour features a selection of handpicked Italian owned and operated businesses. Craft beer is first on the menu with a visit to the award winning Luppolo Brewing Co. where it’s all about the beer. The next course ventures into historic and vibrant “Little Italy” on Commercial Drive to the deli legend at La Grotto del Formaggio. The main course features a masterfully handmade meal at the renowned Marcello’s Ristorante and Pizzeria. Last up, they have a sweet surprise for you at the end of the evening.

During Dine Out Vancouver guests can choose between multiple dates between January 18th and February 2nd for the Italian Brewery and Culinary Tour.  The added bonus is no driving, just sit back and enjoy the experience.  Vancouver Brewery Tours provides full transportation aboard their bus including pick up and drop off at Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver. Your knowledgeable tour guides will take you on a 3 1/2 hour tour which runs from 3:45 pm to 7:30 pm. Walt Dismal At The Rio Theatre February 5th

waltdismalThis February, Impossible Things Productions, brings you a parody of Walt Dismal proportions. You may know, some classic Walt Disney movies like Aladdin, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, but on February 5th you will see them in a whole new way.  Walt Dismal which is billed as a musical and a comedy will bring you some slightly twisted characters who will be acting out a series of scenes from the aforementioned popular animated classics.  We hear you can expect some side splitting comedy along with a version of your favourite songs like you’ve never heard them before. The evening will be led by Walt Dismal himself (also known as Matthew Simmons).  Tickets for this evening of fun are $20 in advance or $22 at the door. Totem Pole Raising Ceremony – Collingwood Neighbourhood House – January 12th

This Saturday witness one of the those rare opportunities a Totem Pole Raising Ceremony. The event begins at 10:30 am with a community parade from Collingwood Neighbourhood House, 5288 Joyce Street, to Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s Annex at 3690 Vanness Avenue. This is a free event. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Unscriptured: The Extended Version  – Havana Theatre – January 11th & 12th

A 2018 Vancouver Pick of the Fringe award winning comedy, Unscriptured is at Havana Theatre this Friday and Saturday night. The production is a completely improvised church service for a religion made up on the spot. You, the audience, gets to make the suggestions.  This formerly 1 man show has been expanded to include a choir and guest preachers.  Tickets are $5.00 and a collection plate will get circulated after the show in true church form. Comedy For A Cure – Rio Theatre – January 12th

You are invited for an evening of comedy with Charlie Demers, Jacob Samuel and host Katie-Ellen Humphries. These three are regulars on CBC’s The Debaters and will be on stage this Saturday for a Funny Fun FUNdraiser at the Rio Theatre to benefit the Tumour Foundation of BC and children and individuals with neurofibromatosis (NF). Tribute to David Bowie – Rickshaw Theatre – January 12th

Not ready for the weekend to be over come Sunday?  Clueless: The Improvised Murder Mystery may just be the ticket. Who did it? Mrs. Peacock in the pantry with poison. Mr. Black in the Billiards room with a blunder bass. Miss Scarlett in the scullery with a scalpel. Six suspects. Seven rooms. Eight weapons. No Clue. Looking for more live music, did you know The Heatley in Strathcona regularly features live music?  This Friday, they have Emily Molloy, Mary Matheson and Alexandra Staseson from 8 – 11 pm. Sundays they offer bluegrass music with brunch 11 am – 3 pm.

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3-7 pm, no cover.

Circle Game: Reimagining the Music of Joni Mitchell January 12th to February 9th At The Firehall Arts Centre

circle game_image1_kimmy-benjamin-adriana-samantha-david-scott_credit stephen rutherford Firehall Arts Centre is bringing back to the stage the music of a Canadian icon and renowned singer-songwriter, Joni Mitchell, with the production of Circle Game: Reimagining The Music of Joni Mitchell.  Artistic Producer and local talent, Donna Spencer, brings this energetic musical experience featuring six quadruple-threat talents to the stage. Together they play eighteen instruments, creating modern variations on themes by Joni Mitchell.  For those that don’t know, Joni Mitchell is one of the most influential female recording artists of the late 20th century. She often featured social and environmental issues in her music. Mitchell’s music stands the test of time and is once again the voice of a generation. Some examples include the heartbreak of a failed love affair in “River”, the fear of imminent ecological disaster in “Big Yellow Taxi”, and the promise of a generation gathering to ‘get back to the garden’ in “Woodstock” are topics that resound as heavily today as they did fifty years ago. Circle Game runs from January 12th to February 9th, 2019. Tickets are available online at The Firehall Centre with several Pay What You Can Performances on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm.

Pitch, Bitch And Ditch At The Cultch January 14th “The Dragon’s Den Of Theatre”

If yes, then you may wish to check out Pitch, Bitch and Ditch happening Monday, January 14th at The Cultch.  Do you have a great idea for show?  Do you want to have a say in what type of productions you’d like to see on stage? Creators, Pippa Mackie and Kim Senklip Harvey, aim to highlight the strength and power of female-identifying voices and experiences. During the course of the evening, they will guide attendees through a lively banter and debate on a variety of possible topics.  No idea is off limits, no suggestion taboo, you are to let your imagination run wild and oh, the bar will be open should that help you loosen your tongue just a little.  There general theme goes like this:

PITCH
Bring your ideas —
pitches are anonymous, so no judgement!

BITCH
Kim and Pippa discuss the pitches, and debate whether they have potential as plays or not!

DITCH
The power is in your hands
—audience members vote on which pitches are ditched and which ones have promise!

Tickets for the event are $10 and available online through The Cultch.  If you are interested generally in Women In The Arts, there is mixer by that name the same evening before the show from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in The Cultch Lobby. It is free attend the mixer.
