The Day Trippers – Federico’s Supper Club – May 17th

The Day Trippers will be performing at Federico’s Supper Club, 1728 Commercial Drive, this Friday night.  If you love Beatles music, a great meal along with dancing, this Friday Federico’s Supper Club is the spot to be.

The Fitting Room – Havana Theatre – May 17th & 18th

The Victoria Fringe award winning production The Fitting Room finishes up it’s run this week at Havana Theatre. The play about four teens, a mom and a rabbi touch on the sudden death of a 13 year old after a dare. This poignant production received Victoria Fringe’s Best Overall Favourite and Bravest Awards. Tickets are $15-$20 and available through Showpass.com.

Nassim – The Cultch – May 17th & 18th

From Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour has brought an audacious theatrical experiment to the stage.  Each night a different performer joins the playwright on stage, while the script waits unseen in a sealed box. The show is partly autobiographical yet we hear powerfully universal. The show is a striking theatrical demonstration of how language can both divide and unite us. This production is getting rave reviews, just a few more days to catch it. For tickets, visit The Cultch.

Cat Video Fest 2019 – Rio Theatre May 18th

Love cats and/or cat videos?  You will want to check out Cat Video Fest 2019 this Saturday afternoon.  The event features a compilation of the latest and best cat videos including animations, music videos and random submissions.  This is a perfect feel good event, who doesn’t need a bit of that. Added bonus, it’s a fund raiser for VOKRA – Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association based in East Vancouver that does amazing work in the community.  Advance tickets are $12.50, or you can purchase them at the door $14.50.

Zero Waste Vegan Market – 520 Alexander Street – May 18th 

If you want to learn more about how to implement a zero waste lifestyle, you are invited to this free public event being held this Saturday at 520 Alexander Street. The market is hosted by Peace People Project and runs from 11 am 4 pm. You are encouraged to bring your own reusable bags and containers.

Pop Up Bakery – les amis du fromage – May 18th

Ritchie’s Bakery is back at les amis du fromage, 843 East Hastings St. this Saturday. Beautiful artisan breads and sweet treats available surrounded by an amazing cheese selection.  Pretty perfect. Pop Up happens from 11 am – 3 pm.

Baby Face Brass – Café Deux Soleils – May 18th

If you wish to take in some energetic live music this long weekend, you may wish to check out BabyFace Brass performing at Café Deux Soleils this Saturday night. BabyFace Brass is billed as Vancouver’s premier street jazz and party band.  Doors  open at 8 pm and music kicks off at 9 pm. Admission $10.

Eastside Flea – 550 Malkin Avenue  – May 18th & 19th 

The Eastside Flea is happening Saturday and Sunday at 550 Malkin Avenue from 11 am to 5 pm. Lots of great vintage finds along side local makers, food trucks and cocktails will be available for purchase. Admission is $2.00.

Vancouver Postcard Show & Sale – Hastings Community Centre – May 19th

A good old fashioned paper collection of postcards will be on display this Sunday at the Hastings Community Centre from 10 am to 4 pm.  You can expect to find vintage posters, stamps, historical photographs and more. Sounds like a pretty cool event.

Looking for more live music, did you know The Heatley in Strathcona regularly features live music?  Every Sunday they offer bluegrass music with brunch 11 am – 3 pm.

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, no cover.

Looking to shop local? Be sure to check out one of the farmer markets happening this weekend. Les Amis du Fromage Celebrates 10 Years With Pop Ups Plus – March 9th

A favourite spot, les amis du fromage, celebrates 10 years in business this Saturday at their East Van location, 843 East Hastings in Strathcona.  Along with cheese samples, they will have a few delish businesses on hand with pop ups including Ritchie’s Bakery with breads, La Glace Ice Cream with handcrafted creamy goodness and Petit Four Pastries. If that’s not enough, there will be demos by Lee Murphy and she will showcase her cookbook The Preservatory. Stop by this Saturday and support local business.

Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop – Gaston Park – March 9th

Got a fruit tree in your yard or community garden that could be producing more? You are invited to join Randi-Lee Taylor of Simply Barefoot Garden Services for some old fashioned hands on pruning techniques. Learn how to prune fruit trees for maximum production, taste, and plant health in this hands on FREE workshop. If you have pruners, you are encouraged to bring the, although they will  have some on hand. Event takes place in Gaston Park this Saturday 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

East End History Walk With James Johnstone – 696 East Hastings St. – March 9th

James Johnstone is back offering his East End History Walk this Saturday, March 9th.  Tour starts at The Heatley, 696 East Hastings at 10:00 am and runs for 2 1/2 – 3 hours. Cost is $20 per person.  To reserve your spot, email James at historywalks@gmail.com.

Twilight Crow Roost Bike Ride – March 9th

The annual Twilight Crow Roost Bike Ride happens this Saturday. All riders of all ages welcome. Crow inspired costumes are also encouraged.  Ride kicks off at a NEW LOCATION this year at the Central Valley Greenway and Garden Drive (one block west of Nanaimo). Ride begins at 5:30 pm.

Eastside Flea – 550 Malkin Avenue  – March 9th and 10th

Looking for some vintage? Maybe some collectibles or handmade items? The Eastside Flea is one of a couple options this weekend. The Flea happens Saturday and Sunday at 550 Malkin Avenue in Strathcona from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  There of course food trucks at the ready in case you get hungry.

Bridal Swap – Croatian Cultural Centre – March 10th

The Original Bridal Swap happens Sunday at The Croatian Cultural Centre from Noon to 4:00 pm. If you are planning a wedding, or even a big party, there are some great colourful gently used items at great deals.  Tickets are available online or at the door. Main Street Mixed Bag – The Ellis Building – March 10th 

This Sunday, Main Street Mixed Bag takes over The Ellis Building, 1024 Main Street. This is as the name implies a mixed bag of yard sale vendors, collectibles, vintage and handmade.  Entry is free and dogs are welcome on a leash.  The market happens 11:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Biggest Dog Meet Up #5 – John Hendry Park – March 10th

Another large dog meet up is happening at John Hendry Park this Sunday from Noon to 4:00 pm.  Bring your dog and your friends.

Comedy With Ed Hill – Havana Theatre – February 22nd & 23rd

Havana Theatre hosts some unique comedy this Friday and Saturday night. An emerging young comic, Ed Hill, takes the stage for 2 shows on Friday and Saturday night.  Ed, originally from Taiwan, has performed all over the world has received numbers Best Comedian accolades as well as being named Comic to Watch in 2018.  Tickets are $12. James Johnstone History Walk – Strathcona – February 23rd

JFL Northwest Presents Nicole Byer – Rio Theatre – February 23rd

Looking for some comedy this weekend? Nicole Byer is performing two shows this Saturday night at the Rio Theatre.  Nicole is an actress, comedian and writer who hosts the baking show Nailed It currently on Netflix.  She also has a sitcom loosely based on her life. This weekend’s show is called Why Won’t You Date Me?  Sounds like a fun night of comedy. Tickets are $26.50, shows at 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm.   For tickets, visit the Rio Theatre.

Eastside Flea – 550 Malkin Avenue – February 23rd and 24th

Looking to do a bit of wandering this weekend? Why not check out the Eastside Flea happening this weekend in Strathcona. Lots of cool vintage finds, a bar and some cool vendors to check out, or just hang out with friends and food trucks at the ready in case you get hungry.  Happens Saturday and Sunday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

7th Annual Oscar Party – El Camino’s – February 24th

El Camino’s is hosting their 7th Annual Oscar Party this Sunday, February 24th. Festivities get under way as of 3:00 pm which the red carpet madness gets under way.  The awards ceremony doesn’t begin until 5:00 pm.

Community Skate – PNE Agrodome – February 24th

It hasn’t quite been cold enough to skate on local rinks, but you can grab your ice skates and head to the PNE Agrodome this Sunday.  A Community Skate will be happening from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Cost is $3 for adults 19+, Senior 65+ and Youth 13-18 $2.50, Child 3-12 $2.00 and 2 years and under free.  Reminder, you do need to bring your own skates & helmets. Rentals will not be available.

Red’s Annual Garage Sale/Swap Meet – Trev Deely – February 24th

If you love motorcycles and tinkering with them, then you likely already know about this event. In case you don’t, the Trev Deely Dealership at 1875 Boundary Road is hosting Red’s Annual Garage Sale and Swap Meet this Sunday.  It’s an indoor event with space for up to 65 vendors. The sale happens from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. If you are looking to see if they have any spaces left, you can contact: tdhd@trevdeeley.com.

BYOB Bike Sale – Trev Deely – February 24th

Now if the Swap Meet above isn’t enough to entice you over, we do hear there will be a BBQ happening on site with proceeds going to charity.  AND their parking lot will play host to BYOB Bike Sale.  Bring your bike to sell, all makes and models welcome. Eastside Flea – 550 Malkin Avenue – Dec. 1st & 2nd

The Eastside Flea is in full swing this weekend for holiday shopping. Lots of great local vendors on hand to help make your Christmas shopping easy. PLUS, they are taking donations of a variety of personal items including cosmetics, toiletries, clothing, etc. which will be distributed to the WISH Drop In Centre Society and Ray Cam Cooperative Centre. The Eastside Flea happens from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

June Hunter Studio Sale – November 30th – December 2nd

Calling all nature and wildlife lovers, this is the spot to head to this weekend to do some relaxed gift shopping. East Van artist June Hunter is hosting her annual Holiday Studio Sale this Friday (2:00 pm to 7:00 pm), Saturday and Sunday (10:00 am – 5:00 pm).  The setting is her idyllic back yard studio complete with an offering of mulled wine and Christmas baking.  We hear some delish Gingerbread muffins will be on hand. June’s studio is located in the Hastings Sunrise area at 2785 Parker Street.

Crafty Affaire  Holiday Market – Croatian Cultural Centre – December 1st

The Crafty Affaire Holiday Market happens at the Croatian Cultural Centre this Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. They have a great line up of vendors including some favourites like Odd Society Spirits, Sriracha Revolver, Eb & Flo Designs, East Van Bees and Sealuxe to name a few.  Check out their website and we see some cool lamps by Usedful.  We’ll be keeping an eye on them.  Admission for the market is by donation.  First 25 people in the door will get a swag bag.

Vancouver Giants – Pacific Coliseum – December 1st

If you miss watching the Vancouver Giants play hockey at the Pacific Coliseum, this Saturday is your chance.  The boys will be back for a game against Tri-City Americans. Game starts at 7:00 pm. For tickets visit Ticketleader. Note, they are back for a second game December 8th which is the infamous Teddy Bear Toss. So you can purchase tickets for one event or both.

Mini Folk Fest – Wise Hall – December 1st

A fun all ages afternoon event at the Wise Hall. Professor Banjo and others host square dancing from 3:00 pm– 5:30 pm at the Wise Hall. Tickets range between $10 – $40, Kids under 5 are free.

The Enemy – Firehall Arts Centre – Until December 1st

A contemporary political drama finishes its run this weekend at the Firehall Arts Centre. The Enemy is an interpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, a female Dr. Stockman discovers contamination in the community’s water source and is branded an enemy and accused of destroying the local economy. For tickets, visit Firehall Arts Centre.

Our Social Fabric: Fabric Sale – 1275 Venables Street – December 2nd

If you are doing some sewing or crafting for the holiday season, you may wish to check out the Fabric Sale at Our Social Friday this Sunday.  It’s their last sale of the year happening at 1275 Venables Street (at Clark) from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. There will be some great deals to be had.

Maker Market At The Ellis Building Launches Friday October 26th

MakerMarketAtTheEllisSo in case you missed the news, The Eastside Flea, which was until recently located at 1024 Main Street in the Ellis Building, has moved to the Eastside Studios at 550 Malkin Avenue in Strathcona.  Which we might add is a great cool space. This though left the window open for someone to organize and takeover the space at now vacant Ellis Building and that they’ve done. This Friday, October 26th is the launch of the Maker Market At The Ellis which features you guessed it local makers, food trucks and more.  We see our friends at Sriracha Revolver will be on hand with their amazing spicy sauces AND one of their sauces we hear will be added to a spicy drink collaboration at the bar. Yes there’s a bar, cash only.  This new Makers Market happens from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.  If you can’t make this one, two more are lined up Friday, November 23rd and Friday, December 14th. Vegan Pop Market – Little Mountain Shop – October 4-8

There seems to be a few of these lately and that’s certainly not a bad thing in our view.   The Little Mountain Shop, 4386 Main Street, is hosting a Vegan Pop Up Market this weekend. Are you shopping for some vegan friends or family? We expect a good selection here.  Shop is open 11:00 am to 6:00 pm daily.

Girls Like That – Havana Theatre – October 5th & 6th 

Sour Dog Theatre Presents: Girls Like That at Havana Theatre this Friday & Saturday night. “When a nude photograph of Scarlett goes viral in her high school, rumours spread across smartphones like wildfire and her reputation becomes toxic, threatening to shatter the fragile unity of the girls she has grown up with. Using shifts in time to interrogate when play turns into competition for young women, the play focuses on adolescent female friendship in the present day and how poisoned our perspectives can become in the face of societal and cultural pressures, and not to mention the fucking patriarchy.” If you have a daughter, niece, sister, you should show this production.  These events transform lives and shape perceptions for a very long time, sometimes forever.  Tickets are $25 and available online at Showpass.com.

Ola Volo Solo Exhibition – Settlement Building – October 5th & 6th 

Ola Volo is having her first solo exhibition this weekend at the Settlement Building. King.Queen.Lovers.Fool will feature  12 original paintings on canvas limited edition artworks as well as one Ola Volo signature-sized mural on wood panel.  We hear Doan’s Craft Beer will be on hand and  Vancouver Urban Winery will have the wine at the ready. Opening Reception is October 5 from 6:00 – 11:00 pm and an Artist Talk is set for Saturday, October 6th at 3:30 pm. For more info, visit, the event’s Facebook page.

A Vancouver Guldasta – The Cultch – Until October 21st

On now this weekend at The Cultch, A Vancouver Guldasta features a Punjabi family in the early 80s. We attended opening night and wow! For anyone that lived in the 80s, this is certainly a flashback in time. There’s history here about Vancouver, but also world politics, religion and most importantly family, which isn’t always biological.  Many people who grew in the multi cultural community that is Vancouver will resonate with the many themes in this production. We highly recommend. The show is on until October 21st. Tickets are available online at The Cultch.

Draw Draw Draw – Trout Lake Community Centre – October 6th

If you ever wanted to draw on the floors and walls, now’s your chance.  The Trout Lake Community Centre invites you to do just that. They will be experimenting with drawing to music and sounds as well. This is a free event that happens from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Centre Lobby. All are welcome, but pre-registration is requested.

Eastside Flea – 550 Malkin Avenue – October 6th & 7th

In case you missed it, Eastside Flea has moved to a new location, 550 Malkin Avenue, Eastside Studios.  50 local vendors will be on hand this Saturday and Sunday as will food trucks, music and we hear pinball and pool. Kids and dogs are welcome as well.  Admission is $3.00. The Eastside Flea runs 11:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Free Family Fun – Trout Lake Community Centre – October 8th

This holiday Monday, October 8th, Trout Lake Community Centre will have the gymnasium set up with a bouncy castle, arts and crafts and games for the kids from 10:00 am to Noon.  It’s a free event, but you are asked to pre-register.

Brunch This Long Weekend?

Looking to do brunch this long weekend? Reminder that Havana Restaurant is now officially back and running after a small kitchen fire.  If you are looking for more brunch ideas and where to go, don’t forget to check out our 2 features on Brunch On The Drive and Brunch In Hastings Sunrise.  Lots of great places for eats and amazing coffee.

This weekend Kamloopa continues at The Cultch which is high energy Indigenous matriarchal story that follows two urban Indigenous sisters and a lawless trickster who face the world head-on as they come to terms with what it means to honour who they are and where they come from.
