Tango Lessons – Italian Cultural Centre – September 22, 2017

Looking for a perfect date night?  How about a tango lesson at the Italian Cultural Centre. This is currently a weekly event happening on Friday nights until the end of October. Classes run from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Cost is $20 per person per class, or you can register by the month at a cost of $60.

Comedy With Debra DiGiovanni – York Theatre – September 23, 2017

One of Canada’s funniest female comedians will be at the York Theatre this Saturday night.  This is where you’ll find us. Tickets are a very reasonable $25 if you can still snag yourself a ticket. We recommend you do.

Affordable Concert Series: Big Easy Funk – Rio Theatre – September 23, 2017

The Big Easy Funk Ensemble along with guests Disco Funeral and Subscura are performing at the Rio Theatre this Saturday. The show features sounds from the 60s funk legends to funk, jazz and blues. This event is part of the Affordable Concert Series, it is just that affordable. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door. To learn or buy tickets visit, the Rio Theatre.

Benefit Concert For Aunt Leah’s Place With Blue Dirt Girl At The Notional Space

You are invited to listen to the sounds of Blue Dirt Girl tonight at the Notional Space at 1523 E Pender Street.  If you don’t know it, Blue Dirt Girl is the latest musical project of singer, songwriter, guitarist, and Vancouver indie artist, Kathryn Sutherland. The Notional Space show will feature blue dirt girl’s trio along with craft beer by Luppolo’s Brewing. They will be raising funds for Aunt Leah’s Independent Lifeskills Society which helps event children in foster care from becoming homeless and assists mothers in need.  To reserve your spot email: bluedirtgirl@gmail.com.

Clothing Swap – Wise Hall – September 24, 2017

Do you have clothes, books, shoes, craft supplies, jewellery, accessories you’d like to rehome? Maybe pick up a few new items in the process. Clothing Swap happens this Sunday at the Wise Hall from 12-3 pm.  Drop off is 12:30 – 1:00 pm, cost is $10. Come back between 1-3 pm and shop. Walk For Reconciliation – Strathcona Park – September 24, 2017

The first-ever Reconciliation Expo will be held Sunday, September 24th.  The event begins at 10:00 am with a 2 km walk that starts at  650 Cambie Street and travels to Strathcona Park.   After the walk, there are a host of activities lined up for the day at the Expo that continues till 3:00 pm. The event will include community booths that include information about reconciliation, cultural activities as well as presentations by community groups.  Along side the events, there will be an area dedicated to local artisans and it will be a great opportunity to experience local Indigenous art and culture as well as musicians and dance groups.

Jazz Night With Dylan Cramer Quartet – Italian Cultural Centre – September 27, 2017

Dylan Cramer performs with his swinging quartet at the Italian Cultural Centre.  A buffet is available from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm. The concert starts at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $35 for dinner and $15 for concert only.

If you are looking to take in some interesting theatre, we recommend checking out Feasting For Famine which runs for a brief period at the Firehall Arts Centre September 27 to 30, 2017. The show features one man’s journey through the extremes of body building and health fitness  If you missed the sold out show Draining The Swamp during the Vancouver Fringe Festival, it has been held over at Havana Theatre until September 23rd. First Pick Handmade – Heritage Hall – September 16 & 17, 2017

First Pick Handmade brings together 27 Canadian men’s and women’s fashion accessory designers. The Heritage Hall will be transformed into a 3,300 square foot pop up boutique with a variety of items for men and women. Event runs Saturday (11:00 am – 7:00 pm and Sunday (10:00 am – 6:00 pm). Admission is $3 at the door.

Drive-In Movie – River District – September 16, 2017

After a false start last weekend with a last minute cancellation, Drive-In Movies are back at River District. The evening starts off this Saturday with a showing of Wonder Woman at 7:30 pm, followed by The Transformers The Last Knight at 10:00 pm.  Cost is $20 per carload for one movie and $30 per carload for 2 movies.  Gates open at 6:45 pm and is first come first serve

Tailgate Party – Whisky Six BBQ  – September 17, 2017

Whisky Six BBQ at 826 Renfrew Street invites you for a Tailgate Party with BBQ, beer and cocktails. We hear the good folks at Bomber Brewing and Odd Society Spirits will be on hand.  Event runs from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Yoga In The Park – Grandview Park – September 17, 2017

Ocean and Crow Yoga will be hosting free yoga in the park this Sunday, September 17th. Bring your own towel and yoga mat and you are set.

Story Story Lie – Rio Theatre – September 21, 2017

Can you spot a liar? Story Story Lie is an interactive, live and laughter filled show with one simple premise: Vancouver’s best share intimate, hilarious and often embarrassing stories that seem too strange to be true. The catch? Someone’s lying. The audience takes part in an interrogation to reveal who it is. The Westender calls this show “One of the most inventive events on the Vancouver arts calendar” Story Story Lie now moves to a bigger space at The Rio Theatre for its first show in this venue on Thursday, September 21st.  Tickets are available in advance for $10 online or $12 at the door.

Accordion Noir Festival – Russian Hall – September 7-10, 2017

Vancouver Fringe Festival – September 7-17, 2017

The Vancouver Fringe Festival has officially kicked off and there are a number of great shows happening during the Festival. You can find out what it’s like to be in a blind man’s shoes in Bombay Black on now at The Cultch, or check out some young new talent in Cry Baby The Musical at The Firehall Arts Centre.

Studio Sale – June Hunter – September 9, 2017

One of our favourite East Van artists, June Hunter, who features nature in her work is having a 1 day Studio Sale this weekend. Her work includes prints, tiles, jewellery, art, calendars and much more.   It’s a great little space near Hastings Sunrise at 2785 Parker Street and takes place from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Drive-In Movie – River District – September 9, 2017

Drive-In Movies are back at River District in SE Vancouver starting Saturday, September 9th.  The evening hosts a double feature starting off with Cars 3 at 7:45 pm and Baby Driver at 10:00 pm. Cost is $20 per carload for one movie and $30 per carload for 2 movies.  Gates open at 6:45 pm and is first come first serve.

Cops and Kids – Grandview Park – September 10, 2017

Between Noon and 3:00 pm you are invited to stop by with the kids for a safety-oriented event being held in Grandview Park. Families have the opportunity to meet and interact with VPD officers, police dogs and horses.  Also on hand, will be first responders, transit police, members of the Vancouver Fire Department and BC Ambulance service.   The event includes activity stations such as the  Bike Rodeo and the Mini POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Training). This is a free event. Everyone welcome to attend.

Fall Fair – McSpadden Park (Victoria & 5th) – September 10, 2017

If you are looking for more free family fun, you may wish to check out the Fall Fair happening on Sunday, September 10th.  The festivities happen from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm and include a host of activities such as zucchini races and square dancing. We hear you will find real cows, pies, delish canned goods and much more.

If it’s movies you are after, Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Sequel – Truth to Power is playing  at the Rio Theatre this Sunday at 2:15 pm.  If you are looking for free movies, Britannia Community Centre is back showing Sunday evening movies from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Vice-President Al Gore’s movie An Inconvenient Sequel Truth To Power which is a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth happens at The Rio Theatre Monday, September 4th at 4:20 pm. The film brings you up to speed on the issues around climate change.

Opening Reception Photo Exhibit – The Cultch Gallery – September 6, 2017

You are invited to the opening reception happening in The Cultch Gallery Wednesday, September 6th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. They will be showcasing photographs by Wendy D. This is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend. If you miss the opening, exhibit does run until September 30th.

The 10th Annual Accordion Noir Festival kicks off at the Russian Hall on Thursday, September 7th.  The festival kicks off with a special first time Accordion Only Bingo Night with includes prizes and musical acts. Café Deux Soleils has an interesting show happening September 3rd to the 6th called The Gigantic, Enormous, Very Large, Unfathomably Sized Painting which explores the nature of break ups. Rio Theatre is kicking off the weekend with an 80s classic movie The Breakfast Club for their late Friday night movie at 11:30 pm. Of course, it’s also the last weekend to catch PNE Playland. Grease Sing-A-Long – Rio Theatre – August 26, 2017

The Rio Theatre is hosting a Grease Sing-a-Long complete with lyrics on the screen, the bouncing ball, prop bags and contest. This is an all ages event and costumes are  encouraged and audience participation we are pretty sure mandatory. Small Town Artillery CD Release Concert – The Cultch – August 26, 2017

Musical event happening at The Cultch Saturday night. The horn-powered rock quintet Small Town Artillery releases their full-length, self-titled LP in The Historic Theatre. An evening designed to take the listener on an immersive, explosive, emotional and inevitable ride through the jungles of the heart. Also featured CBC Searchlight winners The Long War and Blues-rock swaggerers Years of the Wolf. Tickets are on a sliding scale $10-$40. For tickets, visit The Cultch.

Toast Pop Up Shop – The Pie Shoppe – August 26 & 27, 2017

The French sisters at The Pie Shoppe, 1875 Powell Street, will be featuring a brunch pop up with Chef Dakota this weekend.  They will be featuring Toast in many forms from around the City with a variety of toppings. They will also be serving their own dam fine coffee, Panoramic Roasters. Brunch happens from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Summer Outdoor Concert + Lantern Procession – Trout Lake – August 30, 2017

You are invited to catch the last summer outdoor concert at Trout Lake Community Centre. The musical stylings of Checo Tohomaso who will be on stage at 6:30 pm.  After the concert, there will be a lantern procession around the lake at dusk. You will also have the opportunity stop by and make your own lantern from 6:00 pm to 8:15 pm, or you can bring your own from home. Either way, we suspect it will be pretty magical, musicians will lead the parade around Trout Lake.

Looking for theatre? Havana Theatre is featuring the show Sexual Perversity in Chicago  until August 26th. Show follows a set of friends, two of whom are lovers. Tickets are $13.  If it’s movies you are after, Rio Theatre is ON this weekend with Dirty Dancing on Friday night at 9:00 pm for something fun. PNE Playland is on all weekend with food, beer, games, rides, Super Dogs, shopping & more. Musical performances this weekend include  the band Chicago on Friday night and Colin James on Saturday night. We took in the Colin James show last year, he always puts on an amazing show at this venue.

The play focuses on a hostage taking in Beirut and the actions of the spouse on the other side of the world and how that culminates into a startling conclusion. Looking to laugh? Don’t forget Havana Theatre features improv comedy Friday and Sunday nights. Another option for entertainment tonight, is the Rio Theatre which is hosting Lord of the Schwings: A Tolkien Burlesque Night. SUP-A Series  – Sassy One-Of-A Kind Theatre – August 1 – 12, 2017

An interesting new series being featured at Havana Theatre.  Un-produced Projects brings together an eclectic mix of up-beat theatre, never before seen in Vancouver.  Participants involved in this project wish to promote more local and independent theatre. So they will be a showcasing a different one-of-a-kind show each evening for 12 days from August 1 to 12, save for Sunday, August 6th which show will be at 2:00 pm.

Game of Thrones – August 4 + 5, 2017

Fans of Game of Thrones may wish to check out the Rio Theatre this Friday or Saturday night, your pick.   They will be showing The Hodor Rises at 8:00 pm both evenings.

Workshop Build Your Own Trunk – August 5, 2017

Fundraiser for Red Cross BC Wildfire Relief Fund – August 10, 2017

12 Kings Pub at 395 Kingsway invites you to a fundraiser on Thursday, August 10th.  The evening will raise funds for the Red Cross BC Wildfire Relief Fund with a portion of every beer sold going towards the Red Cross. There will also be silent auction with some great items on hand. Again, all proceeds raised will go to the Red Cross. The evening also includes prizes such as JRFM prize pack, 50/50 draw and the opportunity to win 2 tickets to the Whistler Village Beer Festival.  Lots of breweries involved in this event. Playland Nights – July 28, 2017

Last chance to catch Playland Nights which is an evening set aside for adults having fun at Playland without the kids. Kicks off at 7:00 pm till midnight. If you prefer to go with the kids, Playland is now open during the week 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. After July 31st, it’s open 7 days a week 10:00 am to 7:00 pm until the Fair at the PNE begins August 19th.

If you prefer the big band sound, you will want to check out The Big Sound at the Wise Hall on Saturday, July 29th. This is a bi-monthly event featuring a 26 musicians that will recreate a Motown sound. Tickets are $25 and available from Brown Paper Tickets.

 Free Pancake Breakfast – July 30, 2017

There may not be a free lunch anymore, but there is a free pancake breakfast this Sunday, July 30th at The Cultch.  You are invited to breakfast outdoors with the gang at The Cultch and enjoy some good food, make some new friends and maybe learn more about some of the great art coming at The Cultch for the 2017-2018 season. An RSVP is requested which can be done online at The Cultch. Breakfast runs form 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.

 The Geekenders Present A Harry Potter Burlesque Birthday Bash – July 31, 2017

If you are looking for a silly and sexy fun night out, this is your ticket. You can expect an evening with Harry Potter styled Burlesque hosted by the Geekenders.  Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Show gets under way at 8:00 pm at the Rio Theatre.

Upcoming Foodie Events In East Vancouver

We love food and checking out foodie events in and around East Vancouver. Honestly, there are a swack of them to choose from this summer and into the fall months.  Some from past experience we’ve learnt do sell out quickly. Sushi Workshop – Gourmet Warehouse – September 23, 2017

If you wish to learn how to make your own sushi, you may wish to check out the workshop being offered at Gourmet Warehouse on September 23rd.   Seasoned pro Chef Cindy Low will teach you how to make sushi in this hands on class. She will cover it all, how to make sushi rice, mix wasabi, prepare a variety of fillings and will cover rolls, cones and a variety of other shapes.  She will even give you tips on how to host your own do-it-yourself sushi party.  Workshop runs from 11:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 23rd. September – November 2017: Cheese & Wine Tasting – les amis du fromage

 The fine folks at les amis du fromage have a great line of cheese & wine tasting classes starting September 12th with Wine & Cheese 101. More classes follow in September featuring cheese from Italy, France and Quebec. Price runs $65 – 70 per person per class and includes wine with your cheese tasting. Although the dates seem a little ways off, these classes do sell out.  To purchase your ticket(s), visit les amis du fromage. August – September 2017: Summer Pie Workshops – The Pie Shoppe

We can personally speak to the pie making talents of the French sisters that created this shop. These two sisters have some serious pie making experience under their belts and we have to say make some pretty dam fine pie.  They are teaching a number of workshops this summer if wish to master the art of pie making. October 5, 2017: Book Launch ‘Starters, Salads & Sexy Sides’ by Caren McSherry – Gourmet Warehouse

Caren McSherry, chef and owner of the Gourmet Warehouse, has written a cookbook ‘Starters, Salads and Sexy Sides’.
