Music At The Cinemas Series At The Fox Cabaret

Vancouver Independent Music Centre and No Horses Music present Music at the Cinemas Series. Curator, Tony Wilson, presents two double bill concerts at the Fox Cabaret Saturday, November 27th and Friday, December 3rd at the Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main Street.

Saturday, November 27th

Veda Hille
On November 27th, Veda Hill will perform songs about love and nature and time, in an art rock/chamber folk style. She will be accompanied by vocalists Lucien Durey and Patsy Klein, Nicholas Krgovich voice and keyboard

Veda Hille has been writing music, making records, and performing internationally since 1992. She is a classically trained pianist, art school drop-out, performance curator, self-taught singer, theatre interloper, and independent artist. She has released 22 albums, the latest being Little Volcano, a solo album that accompanies her new touring show.

Tillicum Shantie
Featuring jazz arrangements of Salish songs and the music of two legendary indigenous jazz artists – Mildred Bailey and Jim Pepper. To purchase tickets for the November 27th performance, visit Eventbrite.

Friday, December 3rd

Josh Zubot Strings
Josh Zubot Strings will perform a wide gamut of melodic/suspenseful harmony, improvisation and extended exploration in sound Josh will be accompanied by Jesse Zubot violin, viola, James Meger bass, Meredith Bates violin, Peggy Lee cello.

Josh Zubot’s string explorations have found a new home with his string quintet of genre defying West Coast players. Josh’s compositions take on emotion, energy, calmness, unpredictability and virtuosic technique. The music combines traditional and graphic notation while slicing group improvisation moving from the tiniest of sound to the extreme. After hearing his acoustic string music, the listener’s sonic universe will be stretched to the limits.

Scott Smith and Tony Wilson’s Tribute to Lenny Breau and Buddy Emmons

Tribute to Canadian legendary guitarist Lenny Breau and Nashville pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons with music drawn from the jazz tradition.

In the late ’70s guitarist Lenny Breau and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons teamed up and recorded an album entitled Minors Aloud. Recorded in Nashville, the album became a hard-to-find classic and a must-listen for guitarists of any kind. The quartet will play the entire album as well as other tunes Lenny and Buddy collaborated on.

Scott Smith is an award-winning pedal steel player and guitarist who has toured and recorded with Barney Bentall, Rich Hope and Terminal StaQon among many others. Host of the popular Adventures in Pedal Steel series at the Heatley, he released the instrumental album Lifeboat: Explorations in Pedal Steel in 2020.

Guitarist and composer Tony Wilson has been a fixture on the West Coast jazz and free improv scene for decades. In addition to releasing numerous albums under his own name such as Looking Back and A Day’s Life, he has also played and recorded with the Peggy Lee Band, Waxwing and Pugs and Crows.

Sara Bynoe’s Teen Angst Night Turns 19 At The Fox Cabaret November 22nd

TeenAngst19What is Teen Angst Night you might ask? Well it’s where brave souls of all ages get up on stage and share (ie. read aloud to an audience) embarrassing stories from teenage notebooks, letters, diaries and journals. And really who does not have funny and/or embarrassing stories from that time in life when hormones and emotions are at an all time high? Do you have a great embarrassing story to share?  If so, it could be YOU on stage for 19th anniversary celebration happening November 22nd at the Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main Street. And IF you are interested in participating, here are the requirements:

1- The work must be your own.
2- You must have written it between the ages of 10-19; and
3- You cannot be proud of the work you share. It’s best if you’re super embarrassed.

If you prefer to come and listen to stories, best grab yourself an advance ticket which is a very reasonable $12 or you can snag a ticket at the door for $15.  Local comedian and actress, Sara Bynoe, who created Teen Angst Night will be hosting the evening’s anniversary celebration.

The Fair At The PNE – Now to September 2nd

The Fair at the PNE is on daily from 11:00 till 11:00 pm every evening until September 2nd. In case you hadn’t heard, there are lots of free events with admission once inside the gates. Kids under 5 are free with an adult and children aged 6 to 12.  If you are looking for free gate admission, August 27th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm is the last one.  If you are looking from some smooth sounds, Smokey Robinson will be hitting the summer concert stage Friday night at 8:30 pm.

Summer Series – Grandview Park – August 23rd

Commercial Drive BIA is hosting a Summer Series event tonight in Grandview Park.  There will be balloon twisting, face painters and a caricature artist plus refreshments from Super Valu.  The Lego Movie will be shown at dusk, note which is happening earlier these days.

Serate in Piazza – Italian Cultural Centre – August 23rd

This Friday at the Italian Cultural Centre, you are invited to Serate In Piazza. They are hosting an evening of outdoor music and dancing.  Food including sausages, pasta, beer, wine and gelato are available for purchase.  The event happens between 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.  In the event of rain, the festivities move indoors. Music and dancing is free, food available for purchase.

The Zoo Story – Havana Theatre – August 23rd and 24th 

The Rusted Cage Theatre Lab presents a renowned classic story of human disconnection and class division.  The story follows Peter and Jerry who you observe meeting on a sunny Sunday morning in the park. Both suffer from loneliness, so what happens?   You can find out this weekend at Havana Theatre. Tickets are $25 and available through Showpass.

Tomato Festival Tasting & Potluck – Riley Park Community Garden – August 24th

If you haven’t checked out the Riley Park Community Garden it’s a great time to do that this weekend. At the same time you can check out the Riley Park Farmers Market that happens 10:00 am to 2:00 pm right next to it, if you haven’t already. The Community Garden will be hosting a Tomato Festival Tasting & Potluck between 12:30 and 1:30 pm.

August Seed Library Pop Up – Britannia Library – August 24th

If you are a gardener, you may want to check out the seed pop up and start planning your fall garden. They will have annual, biennial and perennial seed varities for fall and winter planting.  You are also invited to donate seeds as well. Stop by between 2:00 and 4:00 at the Britannia Library.

Tinder Tales – Fox Cabaret – August 24th

Who doesn’t have a funny dating story right? This Saturday night, local funny woman Jo Dworschak (Story Story Lie) will be hosting Tinder 💔 Tales at the Fox Cabaret. Comedians will be sharing their own ridiculous dating stories and yes, some will be x-rated. Event happens at the Fox Cabaret. Tickets are $15 online or $18 at the door, if available.  Doors open at 7:00 pm and show gets under way at 8:00 pm. For tickets, visit Eventbrite.

Live Music With The Sonny Landreth Band – Rio Theatre – August 24th

If you love blues music, you may wish to check out this event happening  Saturday night at the Rio Theatre. The Canadian Pacific Blues Society along with One Stop Rock Shop present well known slide guitarist Sonny Landreth.  Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Artful Sundays – Napier Greenway – August 25th 

Artful Sundays continue this Sunday between Noon and 5:00 pm. Expect some great local talent, live music, workshops and artisans. The event is free to attend. The Napier Greenway is located just outside the Britannia Community Centre/Library.

Do you love cartoons? Miss those Saturday morning cartoons you used to watch as a kid. Do you know Storm Crow Tavern offers cartoons Saturday morning from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm whilst you enjoy breakfast/brunch?

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, no cover.

Looking to shop and support local? Be sure to check out one of the farmer markets happening this weekend. Saturday is Riley Park Farmers Market at 30th & Ontario from 10 am – 2 pm and Trout Lake Farmers Market from 9 am – 2 pm at John Hendry Park. Sunday, Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is back in Dude Chilling Park from 10:00 am – 2 pm. JFL Northwest, Vancouver’s Comedy Festival To Take Place March 1 – 10, 2018

JustForLaughsIt’s time to laugh!  Every time we watch the news, we think the world’s gone mad and then think, we really need to laugh more often.  If you are feeling the same way, or just need a good laugh, you have lots of great opportunities to do just that during the upcoming Vancouver Comedy Festival. This event happens at various venues around the City between March 1st and March 10th including the Fox Cabaret, Little Mountain Gallery, Biltmore Cabaret and the Rio Theatre in East Vancouver.  There is an amazing line up of talent including a personal favourite Debra Digiovanni who plays The Comedy Mix March 1st to 3rd. Don’t miss a chance to see her sarcastic wit. In East Van, you will find Sasheer Zamata on March 2nd at the Biltmore Cabaret. Name sound familiar? Think Saturday Night Live cast member for 4 seasons.   Ronny Chieng will be at the Rio Theatre March 3rd and 4th, a well travelled comedian whose most recent gig is a correspondent on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah on Comedy Central. We have our eye on Vir Das who will be playing the Rio Theatre on March 8th and Tinder Tales happening at the Fox Cabaret March 3rd. The PuSh International Performing Arts Festival: January 16 – February 4, 2018

PUSHFestivalThe PuSh International Performing Arts Festival is a feast of live performance art. The Festival takes place over a 3 week period from January 16th to February 4th in various venues around the City. In East Vancouver, The Fox Cabaret, The Cultch and The Russian Hall will be hosting a number of the performances.  Expect to find performances from international, Canadian and local artists in a variety of genres including dance, film, music, multimedia and theatre. Graham Clark’s The Quiz Show At Fox Cabaret September 9, 2017

Love to laugh? Or may you just need a laugh. We recommend you check out The Quiz Show coming to The Fox Cabaret on Saturday, September 9th.  The show which was originally featured at the now defunct Hot Art Wet City is back.  Graham Clark grew up loving all the old game shows and has created an interesting hybrid from game shows of the past. The Quiz Show is hosted by Graham Clark and features local comedians as contestants doing their best to make audience members laugh for which they win prizes.   If you are unfamiliar with Graham’s comedic talents, he is a 3 time Canadian Comedy Award winner, co-host of Maximum Fun’s Stop Podcasting Yourself, a regular on CBC’s The Debaters, has appeared at Just For Laughs, as well as Halifax and Winnipeg Comedy Festivals and even won best stand up last year a the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. So we would lay bets the guy will make you laugh. Tickets for the show are now available on Eventbrite for $10 in advance of $12 at the door.

Roomful of Teeth At The Fox Cabaret January 25 & 26

RoomfulofTeethThe Music on Main and the PuSh Festival present a Roomful of Teeth on January 25th and 26th.  A Roomful of Teeth is a Grammy award-winning vocal group. The group was founded in 2009 by director Brad Wells. The ensemble consists of eight classically trained vocalists dedicated to re-imagining singing in the 21st century. Through study with masters from singing traditions the world over, they continually expand their vocabulary and singing techniques by commissioning and creating new works.  This is their first appearance in Vancouver. If you wish to listen to their sound, you can check them out on Bandcamp.com.  The event takes place at The Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main Street and kicks off at 8:00 pm both evenings. Carnival For The Festival Thursday May 8th Fox Cabaret

You are invited to Carnival For the Festival being held on Thursday, May 8th at the Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main Street. The In-House Festival is an organization that creates intimate cultural spaces where all genres of music, dance, theatre, circus, magic, puppets, storytelling, spoken word, cabaret, burlesque and more are featured. They produce several shows throughout the year including dinner theatre events, a haunted house and others, but their signature event is the In the House Festival. On the weekend of June 6th – 8th, 2014, which will be their 11th year, they will host 3 days of  unique and captivating events AND it all takes place in the intimacy of someone’s home! 13 houses open up their doors and their yards to the 20 spectacular shows.

On May 8th, In House Festival is hosting a fundraiser “Carnival For The Festival” which is a New Orlean’s themed Carnival. You should expect to shake your booty to some amazing music, shop at the fantastic silent auction and support one of Vancouver’s treasures. You are encouraged to wear your carnival mask, as there will be a dance your face off for those that are so inclined. The most beautiful and creative mask will have a chance to win a full In the House prize pack which includes a weekend pass to the festival in June, a t-shirt, and an In the House CD.

The night inclues a line up of many great performers including:

Razzmajazz: RazzMaJazz is dedicated to performing traditional jazz in the New Orleans style. They are known as a fun and upbeat swinging band.

Sambata:  Based in Vancouver, Sambata is a percussion school and musical ensemble that plays a powerful and unique blend of music drawing on the rich traditions of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian popular and folkloric music.

Samba Fusion:  Samba Fusion International Dance Group performs several styles of dance and dance fusion including: Brazilian Samba, Samba, Reggae, Afro- Brazilian, Belly Dance, Gypsy, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Salsa/Latin/Reggae-ton, African, Polynesian, Bollywood andVegas Show Showgirls Cabaret.

The Soft Wind Quartet: The Soft Winds Quartet will delight you with their authentic New Orleans sound, excite you with their hot improvisation and get you dancing to the sounds of Bourbon street and Frenchman street.

Doors open at 6:00 pm for Carnival For The Festival and the show gets under way at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $40.00 and available through Brown Paper Tickets. Come out and support this great event.
