Chocolate Challenge At Gourmet Warehouse May 2, 2019

The Chocolate Challenge is back at the Gourmet Warehouse on May 2, 2019. If you love chocolate, this is the place to be.  The Chocolate Challenge is truly a decadent event for chocolate lovers.  This event pits local chocolatiers against each other to create something amazing, both beautiful and delish, with chocolate.  You have the opportunity to taste their creations and vote on them.  This event is a fundraiser for 3 great local charities, specifically the Strathcona Backpack Program, Project Chef and the Vancouver Firefighters `Snacks for Kids` Program. Tickets are $79 and 100% of ticket sale proceeds go towards these charities. As well, there will be a silent auction featuring a host of items including a Chef’s Dinner at Joe Fortes valued at $2,000 and $1,000 Shopping Spree at The Room at Hudson’s Bay.  To keep you fed and hydrated during this evening event, there will be gourmet food stations situated around the store along with a wine bar.  Event gets under way at 6:30 pm.  Come out and try some amazing chocolate, socialize with other chocolate lovers and support local charities doing great work in our community. Bonfire Nights – Indie Music Fundraiser April 5th At The Notional Space

BonfireNightsA group of talented musicians are hosting an inaugural Bonfire Nights Fundraising event in support of Aunt Leah’s Place on Friday, April 5th. If you aren’t familiar with it, Aunt Leah’s Place is a great local organization that has been working in the community for over 30 years. They do some amazing work with kids in foster care and young mothers.   On April 5th, My Blue Dirt Girl trio, Sarah Wheeler and Reid Jamieson will perform at The Notional Space, 1523 Pender Street.  Luppolo’s Brewing Co. will be donating some craft beer for the evening along with special camp mugs. The founder of Aunt Leah’s Place, Gale Stewart, will also be on hand with a talk about the impact of Aunt Leah’s Place in the community work of Aunt Leah’s Place. Doors open at 7:30 pm, music kicks off at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $20 and available through Brown Paper Tickets.

7th Annual East Side Beer Fest March 13th At The Wise Hall

EastsideBeerFest2019Liberty Merchant Company presents the 7th Annual East Side Beer Fest tasting event on Wednesday, March 13th at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street. The event will feature craft beers from all over the world as well as bits of food from food purveyors on Commercial Drive. This event is also a fundraiser for the Great Vancouver Food Bank Society which helps provides some 25,000 people in need each week. All ticket sales and draw prizes directly support the Great Vancouver Food Bank Society.  Tickets are $29.99 each and available at all Liberty Wine Merchant locations. 2nd Annual Disney Charity Show November 18th Fundraiser For Music Heals

DisneyMusic2018On Sunday, November 18th, you are invited to the 2nd Annual Disney Charity Show being held at the Notional Space, 1523 East Pender Street. Their inaugural event was held last year on The Drive in the evening. Feedback was that people wished to come with their children during the day, so woola. Organizers listened and are now hosting their next Disney Charity Show the afternoon of November 18th.  Doors open at 1:00 pm, show beings at 1:30 pm. This a fundraiser for Music Heals which raises money for music therapy programs in Canada. Tickets are a very reasonable $10 and available at the door.

Me Love Bingo At The Russian Hall October 26th – Fundraiser For Theatre Replacement

MeLoveBingoYou are invited to an evening of fun and silliness for the Second Annual Me Love Bingo. This is a fundraiser for Theatre Replacement which works hard to showcase local artistic talent on stage.  Kyle Loven hosts this year’s Trick Or Treat Edition of Me Love Bingo at the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Avenue.   This Bingo Party encourages costumes for which we hear there will be prizes. A bar will be available as will a silent auction with some pretty cool items.  Doors open 7:00, Bingo gets under way at 8:00 pm sharp!  Admission is $15.00 and seating is limited. EatDrinkPlay2018The Firehall Arts Centre invites you to Eat.Drink.Play. being held on Thursday, June 14th from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 East Cordova Street.  This annual fundraiser brings together some of East Van’s best restaurants, craft brewers, small-batch distillers and performers for an evening of sampling and sharing.  The event takes over the Firehall’s entire premises including theatre, lobby, studio, courtyard as well as the dressing rooms.  Throughout the Firehall, you will find an array of delectable treats, eclectic dance, music and performances as well as a silent auction.  Eat.Drink.Play will feature selections of food from neighbourhood hot spots including The Pint, Tuc Craft Kitchen, Cadeaux Baker, Crab Park Chowdery, Kofta, Elephant & Castle.  Libations will be provided the kind folks at Steamworks Brewery nand Odd Society Spirits as well as Hoochy Boooch kombucha.  You can expect a smorgasbord of delectable treats and enjoyable performances as you roam through the heritage building sampling food, enjoying libations, and bidding on some amazing silent auction items. For music and laughter, Krystle Dos Santos, recently seen in the Chelsea Hotel will be on hand as will Andy Toth seen in the Firehall’s Urinetown The Musical and a few more guests. Night of 1,000 Stars – Fundraiser For Jess Nichol and Keating Gudgeon Memorial Awards VCC – May 13, 2017

JessNicholVancouver Community College Foundation is hosting a fundraiser this Saturday, May 13th at the Broadway Campus. The Foundation is a registered charity whose mandate is to raise funds for VCC student scholarships, bursaries and training materials.  This Saturday, there are raising funds for two memorial awards in honour of Jess Nichol and Keating Gudgeon.  For those that don’t know the names, Jess was a bit of a ‘celebrity” bartender. He worked in Gastown at Boneta at the time of his death. We are told that Jess had long battled mental illness and committed suicide in 2011. Jess had a love for music, so family and friends hosted fundraisers to create an award that helps a musician with preference given to someone from the DTES. The aim is to help a musician who has faced and overcome challenges, stay in school. They will offer a two-year award whereby the recipient receives a total of $3,000 over their 2 year music program at VCC. The second memorial award is in the name of Keating Gudgeon. Keating was Jess’s foster brother. The recipient of this award will be a promising writer. Although VCC doesn’t offer a journalism program, they will be seeking learners with an interest in writing, regardless of their current program. There is a stellar line up for the fundraiser including best-selling author Christopher Gudgeon will be launching a new short story collection “Encyclopedia of Lies”. The evening will feature words and music by:

Sister Shop Hosts Women’s Vintage Clothing Sale At The Biltmore Cabaret April 1st

SisterShopThe Sister Shop is hosting a vintage women’s clothing sale on Saturday, April 1st at the Biltmore Cabaret from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. They are raising funds for WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre which is a non-profit organization that works to end all forms of violence against women. They provide support and healing to many women locally.  At this Saturday’s fundraiser, they will have women’s vintage clothing for sale. As well some local vendors will be on hand including Jacqueline Klassen with beautiful ceramics, Sydney Gelfer with macramé and plants and some rather sweet feminist buttons/pins by Radical Buttons.  While you shop you have the opportunity to purchase mimosas, Caesars and beer. All vintage clothing not sold this Saturday will be donated to local charity thrift shops and non-profit womens’ groups. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go to WAVAW. Admission for this event is a suggested $2.00 donation.  We invite you to stop by and support this community event.

All Roads Lead To East Van T-Shirt – Fundraiser For A Little East Van School

EastVanT-ShirtSchoolPic.pngFor one that was educated by a little East Van School, Queen Alexandra Elementary School, in the writer’s case, we are all about supporting efforts that make our community a better place.  With that view in mind, we would like to introduce you to the efforts of some East Van parents raising money for Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary School. Local parents got together and designed a, we think, pretty cool T-shirt with the theme of All Roads Lead To East Van. Outside of that statement being true, we are loving the design.  Parents have been working to raise funds for various projects including field trips, a community garden and most recently a new robotics program for students.  An online store was recently set up which link we’ve included here.  We EastVanT-shirtinvite you to check it out and support this cool initiative by purchasing a T-shirt(s).  This simple act will make you look a) so cool b) show your love for East Van and c) provide a wider range of learning opportunities for our East Van kids. T-shirts are a very reasonable $25 and if you wish to save on shipping costs, pick up can be arranged in the Hastings Sunrise area.
