You are invited to come out and support TOQUE. This is an annual fundraiser for the Western Front which is one of Canada’s leading artist-run-centers for contemporary art and new music. Proceeds from TOQUE support the year round art and music programs at Western Front. The now 3 day event will be held in the Luxe Hall at Western Front, 303 E. 8th Avenue, and features a selection of talented artists, designers and artisans. Some of the items you can expect to find include books, cards, jewellery, textiles and ceramics as well as one-of-a-kind objects and delectable treats. Vendors participating in this year’s event include Fable Naturals, 1UP Caramels, East Van Jam, Draw Me A Lion, Made by Kin, Maggie Boyd Ceramics, Simply Read Books, Strathcona Stockings, WarmAndDrift, Woodlot and many more. This event runs Friday, December 4th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm and Saturday, December 5th and Sunday, December 6th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is by donation.

June Hunter Hosts Summer End’s Studio Sale September 12 & 13

East Van artist June Hunter is having a Summer End’s Studio Sale September 12th & 13th. For those that aren’t familiar with June’s work, she has a way with nature that shows in all her pieces. Her work has been featured in Style at Home House and Home and Where Vancouver as well as on CBC’s Living Vancouver.
At next week’s Summer End’s Studio Sale, you can expect to find sale prices on art, jewellery, tiles, magnets and one of a kind mixed media miniatures. June will be featuring some new jewellery including her hummingbird series as well as some new bold colourful pieces. If you happen to follow June on Twitter or Instagram, you will have become very familiar with her cat, Edgar, and a visiting crow she’s named Eric. Edgar and Eric now have their own calendars which will be available at her Studio Sale. And from what we’ve heard, the calendars are flying off the shelves heading across the globe. June Hunter’s Studio is located at 2785 Parker Street (one block west of Renfrew – between Hastings St. and First Avenue). The Studio Sale runs from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th.

Phresha – On The Prowl Recycling Bike Parts Into Jewellery

We have been highlighting makers in this year’s Vancouver Mini Maker being held at the PNE Forum June 6th & 7th. In and amongst those 100 exhibitors will be Phresha Le VandalÃ. Phresha we’ve learnt was born with a crayon in her hand. She is a college educated artist with experience in graphic design and advertising, but is deeply influenced by graffiti aesthetics. She won us over right there. Phresha works in a variety of mediums ranging from conventional mediums like ink and paint to found objects and salvaged scraps in back alleys. At this year’s Mini Maker Faire, she will be featuring her side project and those salvaged items being “On The Prowl”. Phresha began, as an experiment in sustainability, combining her love for bicycle culture, recycled materials and jewellery design and from that On The Prowl was born.
Phresha started off with making earrings out of bicycle inner tubes. She has expanded to making belts and bracelets out of bike tires. Phresha is a member of Hackspace where she frequently utilizes their laser cutter to design jewellery out of wood, rubber and upcycled leather. She will have many of her one of kind pieces available for display and sale at the upcoming Vancouver Mini Maker Faire. Blim Market At The Heritage Hall March 8th

Blim Market takes places this Sunday, March 8th at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street. There will be 48 local vendors on hand with an array of items including handmade accessories, jewellery, vintage items, pottery, cards, gifts and sweet treats. A few of the vendors we hear that will on site include first timer, Rescued Clothing Co., with their collection of upcycled t-shirts. There will also be favourite Blim Market vendor Galit Mastai Design, Product of Science and Art with beautiful natural soaps. As well, Barefoot Books will have a great selection of children’s books. Entry for the Blim Market is by donation and the event runs from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Hot food will be on hand by Open Sesame. Also, if you time it right, there will be two free raffle draws at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm for $25 Blim Gift Certificates.

Got Craft? At Maritime Labour Centre December 13th & 14th

Got Craft? is an independent craft fair which will be holding its Holiday Edition market this weekend at the Maritime Labour Centre, 1880 Triumph Street, with some 75+ local vendors.
Got Craft? is one of many great opportunities to see first hand how much creative talent there is in this City. The event aims to bring together a community that fosters handmade and do-it-yourself culture. You can expect to find a variety of handmade items including jewellery, stationery, housewares, plush toys, baked goods, artisan chocolates and much more. Some new vendors lined up this year include Rogue Florist, Shoreside Studios, Small Wonder, Livia Sweets and Jon Shaw Paintings. This weekend you are also invited to come flex your creative muscle in one of the their FREE hands on workshops hosted by Spool of Thread sewing lounge, Small Wonder and Delish General Store. Projects include do-it-yourself ornaments and holiday tags. And if all that shopping makes you hungry, they’ve got you covered there as well. A few local food carts including Taser Grilled Cheese, Ze Bite and The Kaboom Box will be on hand.
The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both Saturday, December 13th & Sunday, December 14th. Tickets are $3.00 cash at the door. Children under 10 are free. The first 50 attendees on each of the days, will receive a free swag bag. Now that’s certainly an incentive to get out early if you aren’t generally inclined to.

21st Century Flea Market At Croatian Cultural Centre Sunday January 19th

21st Century Flea Market is holding a flea market this Sunday, January 19th at the Croatian Cultural Centre, 3250 Commercial Drive. There will be 175 vendors on hand with a variety of items including antiques, collectibles, memorabilia, jewellery, pottery, postcards, records, retro furnishings, dolls, toys and so much more. Should you be in need of having an item appraised, they will be holding ‘drop-in appraisals’ from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm on a first come first served basis. They do ask that the items be small enough to carry, with a maximum of three items per person. The cost for a verbal appraisal is $10 per item or $25 for 3 items, cash only. The drop-in appraisals will be conduct by Gale Pirie, an independent accredited member of the Canadian Canadian Personal Property Appraisers Group. The market runs from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. General admission is $5 at the door. There will also be a special early-bird admission for $20 from 7:00 am – 10:00 am for those wanting a jump on things. Children under 13 are free with adult admission.
Should you wish to have a coffee and/or lunch before or after your shop, consider Commercial Street Café for something close by. It’s a great little hidden gem tucked away a few blocks down the street from the Croatian Cultural Centre. Open Sunday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and located at 3599 Commercial Street, at East 20th Avenue. Of course, going North up the Drive after the market, you have a whole host of great coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants to choose from.

Holiday Craft Fair Kensington Community Centre December 7th

You are invited to the 6th Annual Holiday Craft Fair this Saturday, December 7th at Kensington Community Centre, 5175 Dumfries Street. Kensington Community Centre is located at 37th Avenue & Knight Street and will host 58 vendors this Saturday. You can expect to find lots of handmade and handcrafted items made by local residents. Some of many items available include jewellery, pottery, ceramics, cards, paintings, sculptures, bath and body products, Christmas décor as well as clothing, handbags, hair accessories and much more. There will be a food concession on site with soup, sandwiches, hot dogs, snacks and drinks. There will also be raffle and door prizes as well as a collection for the Vancouver Food Bank. For your food bank donation, you will receive one free raffle ticket. The craft fair gets under way at 10:00 a.m. and goes till 4:00 p.m. Free admission.
