Vancouver Farmers Market In East Vancouver – Trout Lake Begins May 10th

The warm weather is here and the much beloved markets are gearing up for what’s expected to be a busy spring and summer.  The first to get up and running in East Vancouver by Vancouver Farmers Market is:

Trout Lake Farmers Market:  9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Every Saturday May 10th – October 18, 2014
Location:  North Parking Lot of John Hendry Park at Trout Lake between Templeton
and Lakewood south of the 13th Avenue Alley

Main Street Station Farmers Market: 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Every Wednesday June 4th – October 1st, 2014
Location:  1100 Block Station Street along Thornton Park across from the VIA Rail Station and near the Main St Skytrain Station

Mount Pleasant Farmers Market: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Every Sunday June 15th – October 12, 2014
Location: Guelph Street between 7th & 8th Avenues (on the paved play area between Mt. Pleasant Elementary and Guelph Park)

Lots of options to get your local produce, plants, cheese, eggs, bread, jam, soup, baked goods, fish, chicken and visit some local artisans. Of course, the Farmers Market at River District is already under way at 8683 Kerr Street at the foot of Kerr Street and East Kent Avenue and runs every Saturday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.   Come out and support local!

Mount Pleasant: Metamorfest, Broadway East Art Walk & Robson Park Clean Up Sept. 28th

Lots to see and do in Mount Pleasant this Saturday. First off, Metamorfest presented by the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House gets under way. This is an annual Harvest Festival showcasing arts and culture in the lively, vibrant, and diverse neighourhood that is Mount Pleasant. The day will include live bands featuring a wide array of local talent. There will be face painting, henna, a play for children, food and much more. Come down and check out the festivities which begin at Noon and run till 6:00 p.m.

While in Mount Pleasant, take in the next installment of the Broadway East Art Walk. This group of passionate community minded individuals have come together to bring you art in unexpected places and have married businesses with local artists.  You will find art along the Broadway stretch from Prince Edward to Prince Albert. The event runs from Noon – 5:00 pm with short film screenings at 7:00 pm at Western Front, 303 E. 8th Ave, Vancouver, BC.

If you feel like helping out your community and cleaning up a neighbourhood park, Moksha Yoga East Van is organizing a clean up of Robson Park located near Fraser & Kingsway.  Meet up time is 11:00 am by the playground and runs till about 12:30 pm. A picnic will follow afterwards. To sign up, contact Moksha Yoga East Van.  Kudos to them for undertaking this initiative and helping keep our parks green and clean!

4th Annual Autumn Shift Festival in Mount Pleasant September 15th

The 4th Annual Autumn Shift Festival is happening this Sunday, September 15th in Mount Pleasant. This family friendly event is hosted by the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Area and will celebrate the shift in seasons. The event will also focus on attitudes towards sustainability, urban gardening and healthy living within the community. The festival takes place on Main Street between Broadway and 7th Avenue including the laneway one block west of Main Street and Broadway. There will be many interactive booths, a farmer’s market, children’s activities, local vendors, live music, handmade crafts as well as free popcorn and cotton candy. The Autumn Shift Festival  is a green event and will provide festival goers with a B.E.S.T bike valet, water fountains and recycling options led by a volunteer  “Green Team”!  Last but not least, there is a Smoking  Sausage BBQ Cook-off at 2:00 p.m. and a BLIM Fashion Show at 4:00 p.m. Festivities get under way at Noon and run till 6:00 p.m.

A Call To Artists for Broadway East Art Walk, September 28th

A group of neighbours in the Mount Pleasant area have been leading a charge to create an Art Walk in the Broadway East area. A number of businesses along the Broadway corridor between Prince Edward and Prince Albert will be providing some exhibition space within or outside of their premises.  A small scale pilot Art Walk was held on June 8th with great success. So this September 28th, they will be doing a large scale Art Walk.  The goal of the initiative is to bring new life to this area while supporting the local arts with the theme being Art in Unexpected Places. They are looking for bold artists in a variety of mediums including: paint, short film, sculpture, performance, temporary installation, balloon artists, sidewalk chalk artists, eco artists, window painting/decoration, you name it. The field is wide open.   If are interested in submitting your art, submit your contact information and 1 – 2 samples of your work or a link to your portfolio to: broadwayeastartwalk@gmail.com with the subject line “Broadway East Art Walk”. Note: all ages are welcome, in any degree or ability.  Deadline for submitting your expression of interest is September 10th.

Mount Pleasant Park Festival Saturday, July 20th

Mount Pleasant Community Centre is hosting a fun family friendly evening at Mount Pleasant Park (16th & Ontario St.) on Saturday, July 20th.  The event will get under way at 6:00 p.m. and include skateboard demonstrations, live entertainment and inflatables. There will be activities for all ages.

At dusk, they will be showing an outdoor movie ‘Despicable Me’ on a 3 story high movie screen.  You are invited to bring your lawn chair, blanket, friends and family.  Some food trucks are planned to be on site for those that get hungry or need a snack.    NOTE: the event is weather permitting. Street Mural Painting in Mount Pleasant Saturday, July 13th

You are invited to gather at Vancouver’s smallest park to splash a little colour on the road at 10th Avenue and St. George intersection in Mount Pleasant.   The event is being hosted by Vancouver Tool Library as part of the City Commons initiative and is supported by the Neighbourhood Small Grants Project and funded by the Vancouver Foundation.  Join site hosts Emily Payne and Alicia MacLean for a pancake breakfast at 11:00 a.m. and from Noon – 5:00 p.m. you paint.   A neighbourhood potluck and other fun activities are scheduled for 6:00 p.m.  Come out and join the fun!

Draw Down Is Coming Saturday, June 15th

Draw Down is coming to Vancouver on Saturday, June 15th. This is a city-wide one day celebration of drawing.  Bring your creativity and come out and draw!  There will be over 35 FREE drawing workshops all around Vancouver. Many of them taking place in East Vancouver. Here’s a sampling of what you will find:

Exploring Water and Creating a School of Fish

Did you know that under the paved roads there are streams flowing today.  Mount Pleasant community invites first-time ad experienced drawers to connect water through drawing on wooden-shaped fish swimming up Mt Pleasant trees. Attendees will work with social artist in residence, Melanie Schambach, and members of the St. George Rainway project.

Creature Comforts
Kensington Community Centre, 5175 Dumfries Street, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Artist, Yoko Tomita, will lead an engaging drawing workshop and let you draw out your inner creature. No experience necessary, but bring your sense of humour.

Make Your Mark!
Champlain Heights Community Centre, 3350 Maquinna Drive, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Come explore mark making and drawing techniques using surprising and unconventional tools with artist Stephanie Mayson.  Stamp, scratch, and draw your way into creating your very own bright beautiful mono print!

Collaborative Strathcona Dragon Drawing
Strathcona Community Centre, 601 Keefer, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

This Draw Down integrates with a basketball fundraiser. Drop by the gym at Strathcona Community Centre to help create collaborative dragon drawings. Each imaginary dragon begins with a a gestural mark that mimics the swishes and bounces of the basketball shoot out. Suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Bird Calls
Hastings Community Centre, 3096 East Hastings Street, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Cindy Mochizuki leads a workshop in a collective sumi-ink drawing workshop called ‘Bird Calls.’ Participants will work on a large canvas collectively and will create marks and doodles in response to the recordings of ‘bird calls’ collected from the neighbouring Hastings Park Bird Sanctuary.

Drawing the Bass Line
Trout Lake Community Centre, 3360 Victoria Drive, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

 The lobby of Trout Lake Community Centre will resonate with the sounds of composer/double bassist, Mark Haney, while paper trails and endless lines entice you to explore and create. Bring your inner improvisor and let inspiration pull your hand across the paper. Connecting sound and drawing with the most complex instrument on Earth: the human mind.

Creatures! Collaborative Drawing
Thunderbird Community Centre, 2311 Cassiar Street, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

You’re invited to drop by the lobby at Thunderbird to help create collaborative creature drawings. Each imaginary creature begins with a random brush mark, and depends on contributions from at least three different people.

Comic Jam
Sunset Community Centre, 6810 Main Street, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

What happens when everyone draws only one panel in a larger comic story? Colin Upton, Shane Green, Nic Frey and Mindy Fraser of Cloudscape Comics introduce you to the wonderful world of Comic Jams.

Add your drawing to a continuous cartoon tale started by others for you. Follow the plot or veer in a whole new direction. Take your time or enter into the “speed zone” to get ideas on paper fast! Fun is the name of the game when you work with artist and illustrator Andy Mori.

Paper City
Collage Collage, 621 Kingsway, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Guest artist, Liz Toohey-Wiese, will be there to guide artists into creating a mini-Vancouver diorama made entirely out of paper. Mountains, trees, buildings, cars, buses, people, you name it! Collage Collage provides all the art materials and creative support you need to be a part of this installation, you provide the imagination and ideas. Suitable for everyone who is 5 years old and up.
