Call For Artists 2016 – 2017 Showcase Your Art At The Cultch

TheCultchCallToArtistsThe Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, has put out a call to visual artists to submit applications to exhibit their work during their 2016/2017 gallery season. Each exhibition will run for 3 to 4 weeks between September 2016 and June 2017. Submissions can be single or multiple artists’ proposals.

The Cultch has built a reputation over the past 40 years as one of Western Canada’s most innovative and exciting presenting venues. The mandate of The Cultch is to contribute to the enrichment of the city and community’s social and cultural life through the presentation of innovative programs of contemporary music, theatre, dance and visual arts by established and emerging artists.

The Cultch Gallery is a multi-use space and not a traditional art gallery as it also serves as the lobby for performances and is occasionally used for meetings and other small events. Due to the diverse nature of their space, submissions that include sculptures or free standing art will not be accepted.

Submission Criteria for Artists:

  1. An artist statement
  2. Artist bio(s)
  3. Resume/CV
  4. A complete list of images you are submitting, which should include title, size, medium. These images do not have to be the work you will be showing. They want to get a good overview of your work.
  5. You can submit up to 10 images. Image files should be in .jpeg format. File names must include the artist name, title of artwork and size of the work when framed: (example: Yuri Arajs – Sunny Day -18 in x 30 in. jpg)

Deadline for applications is June 1, 2016. It is preferred that you email your submissions or any questions to Yuri Arajs, Gallery Coordinator at e: gallery@thecultch.com.

The Gay Heritage Project At The Cultch March 2-19

GayHeritageProjectA contemporary new show is coming to The Cultch this March called The Gay Heritage Project. It features three of Canada’s gifted creator/performers, being Damien Atkins, Paul Dunn and Andrew Kushnir. They will set out to answer the question: “ is there such a thing as gay heritage?”  Damien, Paul & Andrew will uncover events not often shared and will shine a light on contemporary gay culture. What you can expect is a hilarious and moving homage to all those that came before and the events that continue to shape the lives of the gay community.   The Gay Heritage Project runs from March 2 – 19 at The Cultch. Tickets start at $19 and are available online.

Special Concert At The Cultch February 12th With Barney Bentall, Tom Taylor & Shari Ulrich

BTUA unique concert event is taking place at The Cultch on Friday, February 12th. Barney Bentall, Tom Taylor and Shari Ulrich take the stage and invite you to join them to celebrate the release of their second Album “Tightrope Walk”.  This group has been dubbed “two Canadian legends, and the number one draft pick”.   The trio will be joined by other musicians throughout the event including percussionist Geoff Hicks, bassist Rob Becker and Shari’s daughter who is a violinist as well as Julia Graff, the album’s recording engineer. The show takes place in the Historic Theatre at The Cultch. Tickets are $27.50 and available online.

Exhibit Opening At The Cultch Gallery January 27

Jeff-Wilson-Grandview Smoke ShopThis Wednesday, January 27th, The Cultch Gallery, 1895 Venables Street, invites you to the opening of a new exhibit.   The Cultch Gallery will be showcasing the works of Harold Coego and Jeff Wilson.  Harold Coego originates from Havana, Cuba but now resides in Vancouver and is a self taught artist.  Harold Coego uses various art forms to express himself including painting, drawing, writing and film making.  Jeff Wilson is also a self taught artist and a native of Scotland.  He worked in the mining industry for most of his life before becoming a painter.  Jeff Wilson first exhibited his work in 2011 and in 2013 he became a full-time artist.  He likes to create socially relevant paintings that are bright, bold and exciting. You are invited to attend the opening reception of this new exhibit which will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday,  January 29th.  The exhibit runs until February 20th and can be viewed from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday and 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturdays. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening reception.

Havana Restaurant Partners With The Cultch

Havana2Havana Restaurant is an amazing delicious spot located at 1212 Commercial Drive. There is a bit of Old Havana in Cuba at this eclectic spot.  Havana is also a great supporter of local arts whether it’s their own theatre in the back or the area next to the theatre showcasing local art. Whether you come for lunch, brunch or dinner, the place is always hopping and we might add has amazing food and drinks. Added bonus is the outdoor patio which is packed a good portion of the year.  Now there is one more reason to stop at Havana for a bite. They have just announced a great partnership with The Cultch.  Havana is offering 15% off your food purchases on any evening you attend a performance at The Cultch. If you didn’t already know, Havana is located just a short walk from The Cultch. So really it’s a perfect spot to stop before or after the show.   As we regularly attend events at The Cultch, you can bet you will be finding us here before a show. Gifting An East Van Experience This Holiday Season

So why not gift someone a fun East Van experience this holiday season?   We have set out below a few of our favourites which include brewery and foodie tours, cooking classes, theatre as well as dinner and dancing.  We have included links which take you directly to each site to make that gift giving easier.

Vancouver Brewery Tour – East Van Brewery Tour

Vancouver Brewery Tours does great brewery tours in and around East Vancouver. A $75 gift certificate gets you onto one of their regularly scheduled brewery tours which run approximately 3 hours. Another option is purchasing tickets for their Beer and Food Pairing Tours which happen in January 2016 for Dine Out.

Off The Eaten Track – Culinary Tours

Off The Eaten Track offers a number of culinary tours including Vancouver’s Best Brunch Tour which takes you through the Hastings Sunrise area for $65. There is also the Railtown Urban Eats Tour runs you $55 and starts in the historic ‘Japantown’ and takes you to a number of stops including Railtown Café and the Settlement Building.  Also on offer are the Main Street Hidden Gems Culinary Tour for $65. Then a personal favourite, the Vancouver Distillery Tour which stops at a number of local distilleries and provides tours, tastings and bites for $75.  Tours all begin at the Waterfront Station and times vary but approximately 2 ½ hours for each.

What about a gift certificate for an evening of dinner and dancing. Federico’s Supper Club offers amazing Italian food, wine and impeccable service. You will regularly find owner, Federico Fuoco, belting out tunes but they regularly bring in lots of local talent to mix things up.

Les Amis Du Fromage – Wine & Cheese Tasting

The Gourmet Warehouse – Cooking Classes

Have a foodie in your life that loves cooking? Or someone that wishes to kick up their cooking skills a notch to impress that special someone? The Gourmet Warehouse offers some delicious and fun cooking classes. In the New Year they are offering Flavours of Morocco on January 23rd for $65,  David Robertson of ‘The Dirty Apron’ will be on hand the evening of January 28th showing you how to make some delish dishes for $75, or if you are feeding a crowd for SuperBowl this year, there is Game Day – Feeding A Crowd for $65. The Cultch – Live Theatre

This is a favourite spot of ours. The Cultch has an amazing array of talent that graces their stages whether drama, comedy, musical, historical, they cover all the bases. In the New Year, they have an interesting show we have our eye on called Leftovers. It features Charlie Demers, one of the stars of CBC Radio’s the Debators and best-selling author. This is a political comedy which we hear will cut through decades of BS.   Tickets are available online from $10. Note the show itself takes place at the York Theatre between  January 26 – 30, 2016.

East Van Panto: Hansel & Gretel At The York December 2 – January 3

Hansel&GretelThis December, make some time for a bit of fun and check out the East Van Panto: Hansel & Gretel.  This production is brought to you by the creative minds at Theatre Replacement and will be playing at The York Theatre from December 2nd to January 3rd, 2015. For those not familiar with the term panto, by definition a Panto (another name for Pantomime) is a tradition of holiday musical comedy theatre. Pantomime takes a familiar fairy tale, in this case Hansel & Gretel, and injects music, contemporary references and (best of all) audience participation to create raucous, noisy entertainment that’s fun for all ages. This year’s show we hear steps way off the beaten path with the weird and wonderful Hansel and Gretel complete with an edible house, a butt-kicking brother and sister team and a cute little cannibal witch.  Hansel & Gretel lure you deep into the East Van wilderness to deliver a fantastic holiday treat. As you might expect, there will be a few (or many) East Van references that will be sure to make you laugh.   The East Van Panto is open to all ages 5 and up. Tickets start at 20, family packs are available which include 4 tickets for $115.  Note, all seats for ages 18 and under are $20.  Tickets are available at The Cultch either in person, by phone or online. The show begins December 2nd at 7:00 pm and continues till January 3rd. The Daisy Theatre Returns To The Cultch December 1-20

The Daisy Theatre_publicity imageThe Daisy Theatre returns to The Cultch for a run on December 1 – 20. This show is returning to Vancouver after two sold out runs and has been billed by The Georgia Straight as “one of the best shows you’ll ever see”.  Each performance is different, daring, ridiculous and honestly dam funny.  Ronnie Burkett, puppeteer provocateur and his company of over 40 marionettes will have you roaring in the aisles. Be forewarned if you are seated in front, you may be drawn into an act or two.  Tickets start at $20 and are available online at The Cultch.  Note, due to the mature content this is a 19+ show.  If you haven’t yet seen this show, we highly recommend it.  We dare you not to laugh.

Sunya At The Cultch November 10 – 14

SunyaThe Cultch, 1895 Venables Street, in partnership with Diwali Fest, bring you Sunya from November 10 – 14. Indo-Armenian dancer and choreographer, Roger Sinha, and Iranian-born gatherer of musical pearls, Kiya Tabassian, along with four dancers and three musicians break boundaries to create a truly unique artistic experience. World music meets dance in a journey both celebratory and spiritual. “Sunya is a fusion of cultures, genres, and artist impulses,” says Heather Redfern, Executive Director of The Cultch. “The musicians and dancers riff off each other, creating an intense and dynamic physical and musical dialogue. The staging is beautiful, featuring vivid colours and patterns created with lights, movement, and sound. Sunya is a feast for all of the senses. It takes you to a place of great spirit.”

Nirbhaya At The York Theatre November 3 – 14

NirbhayaThe Cultch, in partnership with Diwali Fest, presents Nirbhaya starting November 3rd. Nirbhaya is a story based on real life experiences and the violent incident that shocked Delhi and the world. Internationally acclaimed playwright and director, Yaël  Farber (Mies Julie) has created searing new work that cracks open the code of silence around women whose lives have been shattered with violence. Farber brings an extraordinary cast and creative team from India that will take you on a voyage into personal testimonies and show you the amazing capacity of the human spirit for survival, redemption and change.

“Nirbhaya is a play that tells the story of  women who have suffered abuse in their own voices.   By telling their personal stories, these women  shatter the silence that  surrounds abuse in the hopes that by talking about it, we are acknowledging its existence and can begin healing and making societal change.  The play is particularly relevant to the situation we currently have in British  Columbia where, because of  systemic silence, many  women across  the province have gone missing over  the  years,  yet these crimes have been ignored and in some cases, deliberately silenced.  I  am bringing Nirbhaya to the York Theatre because I believe we are all responsible for breaking the silence. Seeing this play together is one action we can take to make change for girls and women in our
neighbourhoods and around the world.”
