East Van Panto: Beauty And The Beast At The York November 22 to January 7

The Cultch and Theatre Replacement are thrilled to present East Van Panto: Beauty and the Beast, November 22, 2023 until January 7, 2024 at the York Theatre. For over a decade, Theatre Replacement and The Cultch have partnered to bring this holiday tradition like no other. It transforms well-known stories with an East Van twist along with pop song parodies, it really has something for all ages.

This year, East Van Panto’s Belle and Bento Buddies invite you on a fun adventure to escape the Beast’s clutches and break the curse on Venables Street.    Bright, business-minded Belle is separated from her free-spirited dad Maurice and becomes imprisoned in an enchanted specialty grocery store by a strangely familiar Beast who seems very set in his ways. Time is running out and Belle who must use her smarts alongside her new friends Miso Potts, little Tofu and their Bento Buds to flip the perspective of Belle’s captor and break the curse before the last cherry blossom falls.

Seeing the live performance of the East Van Panto is a treat with the whole audience involved, but for those that wish to watch it from the comfort of home, the East Van Panto will again be available online from December 18, 2023 to January 7, 2024. If you plan to attend in person, you also have the opportunity to be part of the filming magic as part of the studio audience for Panto Online on December 5th & 6th when tickets are $30.  Whether you attend in person or online, this is one show not to miss.   Be sure to grab your tickets early. PushOFF Artist-Run Curated Event Takes The Stage At The Russian Hall January 30 – February 4

PushOFF comes to the Russian Hall January 30 to February 4, 2023.  PushOFF is an independently produced artist-run curated platform featuring tour-ready work and projects in development. This hyper-local event fosters the artistic practices of a community of artists and allows them to share bold new work with Canadian and international audiences. Now in its 13th season PUSHoff will present live in-person shows at the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Avenue, between January 30 to February 4, 2023. If you prefer to take in a performance from the comfort of home, you can check out their digital offerings at pushoff.org. Tickets range from $15 to $20 for in person and on-line shows. East Van Panto Celebrates 10 Years With Their Own Spin On The Little Mermaid

The Cultch and Theatre Replacement are thrilled to present East Van Panto: The Little Mermaid, November 16, 2022 until January 1, 2023, at the York Theatre.

For a decade, Theatre Replacement and The Cultch have partnered to bring this holiday tradition like no other. It transforms well-known stories with an East Van twist and has something for all ages. This year, East Van Panto is going under the sea with a wild East Van-centric adventure to the bottom of the Burrard Inlet and back.

In East Van Panto: The Little Mermaid, Ariel is busking with her girl band at New Brighton Beach, when she falls in love with a teenage mer-person. She dives into an ocean adventure, where she makes a questionable deal with a devilish octopus named Ursula, fights off evil electric eels with her trash crab BFF, Sebastian, and has to help save the ocean from a mysterious purple slime of despair.

The writer-director duo from last year’s East Van Panto: Alice in Wonderland, Sonja Bennett and Meg Roe, return to create this year’s 10th anniversary production with Veda Hille, who has been writing the music and fun parodies of popular songs since East Van Panto began. For those that have attended past shows, you will know the music is great every year. Tickets start are $35 and are now available online for in person shows with audience participation encouraged. If you prefer to take in the show from the comfort of home, The Little Mermaid is available to watch online on-demand from December 17, 2022 – January 31, 2023 through RE/PLAY, The Cultch’s digital playground. Holiday Favourite East Van Panto Goes Digital This December

One of our favourite things in December is attending the East Van Panto at The Cultch. It’s always good fun with lots of laughs for all ages. And honestly couldn’t we all use a few more laughs this year? For its 8th season, Theatre Replacement’s Artistic Directors James Long and Maiko Yamamoto are bringing the production digital direct to your living room.

In 2020’s Panto Come Home!  Artistic Directors James Long and Maiko Yamamoto sneak into the York to find a very sad pyjama clad Veda Hille parked at her piano. Seems she’s moved into the theatre and has been spending her days trying to relive Panto memories of old. In an attempt to cheer her up they call up a bunch of their favourite Panto friends to sing and dance her best East Van Panto hits. Things go sideways fast when the Phanto of the Panto swoops in. He’s been watching these things ever since Jack and the Beanstalk opened the York 8 years ago and has a few choice ideas on how to make this year’s Panto really work. We hear physically-distanced antics then ensue.

Expect a silly production as favourites from Pantos past come together to remix the best of the last seven Pantos into a brand new holiday extravaganza. From the ‘Cheese Song’ to the BC Ferry Godmother, Panto Come Home! is guaranteed fun for the whole family. So grab your front row seat where you can cheer, sing and dance along with the show in the comfort of your home, hey in your PJs if you want. Panto Come Home! runs December 17-27, 2020. East Van Panto: Pinocchio – November 20, 2019 to January 5, 2020

PinocchioEastVanPantoWe are admittedly huge fans of the East Van Panto. This has become a fun holiday tradition for us. Honestly, we can’t imagine Christmas without it.  This year The East Van Panto celebrates its 7th season with the presentation of Pinocchio. This year’s production welcomes back the creative team behind last year’s Wizard of Oz.  In this year’s storyline, a lonely old ice-cream seller named Gelato is given a puppet by the mysterious Beckwoman of Commercial Drive (have you met her? She is very mysterious, but we digress).  Gelato dreams of having a child and all of sudden his wish comes true. He goes around trying to tell everyone, which means a famous cricket, an angry orca and a dastardly fox, but does anyone believe him?  The Drive can be a scary place, a cappuccino war might break out anytime between the Abruzzos and the Calabrias (no really, it might).  We learn that kids are ditching class to go to The Hastings Racecourse, but why?  Well Pinocchio is advised not to worry, but instead to follow his noise and all will be fine, or will it? Road Trip Episode of Me Love Bingo At The Russian Hall November 16, 2019

MeLoveBingoYou are hereby invited to a fun night out!  The Theatre Replacement, a local theatre company, is hosting their annual fundraiser Saturday, November 16th at the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Avenue.   Come buckle up for a wild ride of Road Trip Episode Me Love Bingo! Kyle Loven will be hosting the event in a gold costume we hear for what is expected to be a campy night of games, amazing prizes, sweet tunes and zero speeding tickets. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the fun and games get under way at 8:00 pm.  Admission is $20, but note bingo papers are a separate purchase at the door for $15. Some great silent auctions will also be on hand to raise some funds. So go have some fun while supporting local art!   Tickets available through Eventbrite.

Me Love Bingo At The Russian Hall October 26th – Fundraiser For Theatre Replacement

MeLoveBingoYou are invited to an evening of fun and silliness for the Second Annual Me Love Bingo. This is a fundraiser for Theatre Replacement which works hard to showcase local artistic talent on stage.  Kyle Loven hosts this year’s Trick Or Treat Edition of Me Love Bingo at the Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Avenue.   This Bingo Party encourages costumes for which we hear there will be prizes. A bar will be available as will a silent auction with some pretty cool items.  Doors open 7:00, Bingo gets under way at 8:00 pm sharp!  Admission is $15.00 and seating is limited. So if you want to Bingo Party, you best pick up your tickets sooner vs. later. Tickets available through Eventbrite.

Panto Day At Hastings Racecourse Sunday, June 3rd

PantoAtTheRacesOne of our favourite shows at The Cultch is having a fun celebration on Sunday, June 3rd. The staff and the Board of Theatre Replacement and The Cultch invite you to celebrate five years of the East Van Panto. Hastings Racecourse we hear is generously providing their marquee tent right next to the track along with catering for 70 Panto fans.  On top of that, they will be donating $5,000 to the show.  Tickets to this family friendly event are a very reasonable $10 which includes lunch and refreshments.  There will of course be horses as well as a raffle and much fun, good cheer. PantoLand Academy Comes To The Cultch – Summer Camp In 2017 For Kids

PantoLandIf you are looking for a fun, creative summer camp for your kids, you may wish to mark your calendar for registration day which is Monday, March 20th.  Theatre Replacement is offering a great 5 day summer camp for kids aged 5-10 years of age called PantoLand Academy.  The camp is based on the East Van Panto and can accommodate up to 70 children. They will learn the whacky and fun world of panto which includes learning to sing, dance, dress up and create. The camps will be led by a team of accredited teachers and members of the East Van Panto’s creative team. At the end of the camp, the children will get to perform onstage at The Cultch for their friends and families. Two camps are being offered, one being July 31st to August 4th, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 pm (Monday – Friday) and the second camp runs from August 8th to August 12th, 2017 (Tuesday – Saturday).  Cost is $275 per child plus tax. The camps will be held at The Cultch at Venables & Victoria Drive.  Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. on March 20th, 2017 and can be done online at East Van Panto/PantoLand. Note, registration is first-come, first served and we heard last year’s camp sold out in a matter of minutes. Although they are offering 2 camps this year, we expect these spots will fill quickly. ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ An East Van Panto At The York Theatre November 23rd to December 31

eastvanpantoThis December, we invite you to make some time for a bit of fun and check out the East Van Panto: Little Red Riding Hood.  Now in its 4th year, this production is brought to you by the creative minds at Theatre Replacement. The show will be playing at the York Theatre from November 23rd to December 31st. For those not familiar with the term panto, by definition a Panto (another name for Pantomime) is a tradition of holiday musical comedy theatre. Pantomime takes a familiar fairy tale, in this year’s case, Little Red Riding Hood and injects music, contemporary references and (best of all) audience participation to create raucous, noisy entertainment that is fun for all ages. In this year’s East Van Panto, Little Red Riding Hood will be bombing down the Adanac bike trail to deliver a basket of goodies to her sweet little granny. In easy path in theory right?  Well this IS the East Van Panto. Little Red Riding Hood will have to battle a few things along the way like some bike thieves along with some distracted drivers and, of course, The Big Bad Wolf. Will there be a murder of crows in her path? Or maybe it will be the Three Little Pigs. Well you will have to come out and find out and cheer her on.  During the show, expect  just a few (or well maybe many) East Van references that will be sure to make you laugh. Of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the musical talents of Veda Hille who will be on hand for the first week after that Benjamin Elliott of Are We Cool Now? fame will be performing Veda’s signature tunes.    The East Van Panto is open to all ages 5 and up. Tickets start at $20, family packs are available which include 4 tickets for $120.  Note, all seats for ages 18 and under are $20.  Tickets are available at The Cultch either in person, by phone or online. The shows run begins November 23d at 7:00 pm and continues till December 31st.
