Empire of the Son At The Cultch October 6 – 24, 2015

Empire of the Son is written and performed by Tetsuro Shigematsu who is the former host of CBC’s The Round. Tetsuro brings us the story of his personal relationship with his father who is dying. They are separated by a generation but connected by blood. Tetsuro’s father speaks several different languages and possesses different values but what has kept them apart for so many years is their similarities. This is a story of two generations of broadcasters who have a lifetime of radio silence between them. With time running out, Tetsuro attempts to reach out to his dying father but is constrained by outmoded yet persistent cultural traditions about it means to “be a man”.

Empire of the Son uses a series of audio interviews, a camera, miniatures and projector to conjure up worlds from the ashes of Hiroshima to the glass towers of Vancouver and beyond. This is a unique theatrical experience that is intimately connected to real life in real time. It is a funny and poignant story of one immigrant family, their intergenerational conflicts in this one man show that blurs the lines between artistic disciplines and continents. Empire of the Son begins its run at The Cultch on October 6th and sold out quickly so extra dates were added.  The show now runs until October 24th. Tickets begin at $25 and are available online at The Cultch.

World Premiere of The Love Bomb At The Firehall Arts Centre September 26 – October 10

Firehall Arts Centre_Love Bomb_publicity image”Love Bombing is an attempt to influence a person by lavish demonstrations of attention and affection.”   This Saturday you are invited to the world premiere of Love Bomb at the Firehall Arts Centre. This is a rock concert within a play as well as a bit of mystery to top it off. This show is brought to you by Shameless Hussy Production’s Meghan Gardiner.   Megan says the show “ was so gratifying to put together, but amidst all the fun, we knew we had a pretty dark story to tell. The darkness is what hooked me. Everything else was a way to tell the story.”  Expect an emotional roller coaster. Tickets are available online from $28 to $33 at Firehall Arts Centre. Holiday Preserves Workshop With East Van Jam on September 22nd

HOLIDAYpreservesclass-sept22-2Studio 126 at 126 East Pender Street is a very cool studio with a variety of locally made goods including reclaimed furniture, handmade items by local artisans including Brand & Iron, Woodlot, Hobo Woodworks, Sue Griese Ceramics, LISSU Linen and East Van Jam. Studio 126 also holds workshops throughout the month and on Tuesday, September 22nd the master of jam, Natalie Ferrari-Morton will be on hand. Natalie is the woman behind East Van Jam and will teach you how to make preserves for this year’s Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Natalie will also teach you the basics of safety and canning as well as how to create delicious pear and cranberry preserves. Come with an apron and go home with your own jar of homemade preserves. The workshop runs from 6:30 to 9:30 pm on Tuesday, September 22nd. To register, visit Studio 126.

Oh The Humanity Runs At The Firehall Arts Centre September 11 – 16

OhTheHumanityThe Firehall Arts Centre is one of many venues for this year’s Vancouver Fringe Festival running from September 10th to the 20th.  Another great production happening during the festival is Oh the Humanity (and other good intentions) brought to you by Staircase Theatre. Oh the Humanity is a witty show that examines the nature of human misery through a filter of jet black comedy. It is a series of 5 short plays about people trying to cope with the basic trial of being human among other humans and honestly, when haven’t we all struggled with that every now and again. In this show, two actors craft four characters each, including a coach who calls a press conference to explain why his team has lost every game in the season, a video dating service promoting two people that have nothing better to recommend than the fact that they are not visibly bleeding, a pair of photographers attempting to re-shoot a graphic war time photo without the original source material, a couple attempting to attend a funeral, or possibly a christening, no, a funeral, with poor results, an airline representative explaining to the families of crash victims what happened to the best of her abilities – despite the fact she lucked, or rather unlucked, her way into the job.  Oh the Humanity runs at the Firehall Arts Centre from September 11th to 16th.  Tickets for the show are available at Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Rescue Me: Maggie A Sweet Tortoiseshell Cat Looking For Her Forever Home

MaggieCatWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a beautiful tortoiseshell cat named Maggie. Maggie is 8 years old and is the true definition of a lap cat.  We hear that although Maggie might initially be a little shy, she enjoys every minute of love and puts on quite the purr.  Maggie does not have any of the typical “tortitude” like many other tortoiseshell cats.  She is an absolute sweetie and is looking for the same in her new guardian.  Maggie was devoted to an elderly person that she lived with, but that person had to go into a care home so she was brought to the Vancouver SPCA. As might be expected, she found life in the shelter a little overwhelming so Maggie is now happily residing in the comforts of a quiet foster home until she’s adopted. Maggie needs to be strictly indoors only and is looking for a home where she can be your one and only. You won’t need anybody else with this sweetie around.  Her foster parent reports that Maggie is pretty independent and low-maintenance. Say Hi To A Stranger – 3rd Edition August 21 – 23

SayHiToStranger2015PINKThe “Say Hi To A Stranger” Campaign returns August 21st – 23rd. We are pleased to see this event continue which was created by A Cue Creative Consulting. A large study conducted in 2012 by the Vancouver Foundation shows that socializing is challenging for many city residents. About one-third of respondents agree that it is difficult to make new friends in Vancouver, and that proportion jumps to half of respondents who have lived in Canada for fewer than five years.

For those unfamiliar with this campaign, the first Say Hi To A Stranger Weekend occurred on November 8 – 10, 2013 shortly after local writer Chelsea Pescitelli identified Vancouver as “anti-social” in her VancityBuzz article “Single in Vancouver: The Asocial Single Society.”  A Cue Creative Consulting responded with a video and blog post that spread online. They dared Vancouverites to say “Hi!” to strangers and tweet about their experience with the hashtag #sayhitoastranger. The A Cue Creative team discovered that Vancouver could be a social and open city, but needed a push to open up and start communicating. Along with the team being featured in mainstream media, approximately 200 people gathered at the checkpoints over the weekend, and more than 5,000 people engaged with the blog and on social media online. #sayhitoastranger trended on Twitter on Thursday, November 7, 2013.

We at IliveInEastVan.com were one of the many that participated in this initial campaign as we love the premise of encouraging social interaction on the streets of Vancouver. We fully support this great initiative and applaude Kaare Long and her team for keeping this discussion going. It’s easy to be complacent and just accept that ‘it is what it is’ or you can take steps to make a difference however small to make the City a better place. On August 21st, they kick off their 3rd edition of #SayHiToAStranger with an Opening Party at Grandview Park from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm. You are invited to come down and say hi and learn more about the campaign. You will also receive information about their community partners who will be providing free food, drinks, gifts and other promotions to people who engage with street teams and receive a button and use the code phrase “Say Hi To A Stranger”. Rescue Me: Bruce A Rottweiler & Husky Cross Looking For His Forever Home

BruceSPCAWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely playful boy named Bruce. Bruce is a young male Rottweiler and Husky Mix. If you happen to be looking for someone to head into the great outdoors with, Bruce is your guy. He loves going for hikes, swims and car rides. Bruce needs a dog savvy guardian though with some time and patience. His new guardian will need to continue working with Bruce on his obedience training as well as slow departure exercises to help reduce his separation anxiety.  His friends at the Vancouver SPCA say that Bruce has been learning how to properly introduce himself and interact with other dogs, but will require someone that can continue working on this to keep up his great progress. Bruce is currently being fostered and has been waiting for his forever home for over 50 days. Bruce would really like a forever home he can call his own. BC Day Beach Party At Dogwood Brewing August 3rd

BeachUmbrellaHave we mentioned we love the folks at Dogwood Brewing, 8284 Sherbrooke Street. OK admittedly, they are our neighbours just down the street in SE Vancouver and we are pleased to see that they are a fairly regular sighting at the River District Farmers Market on Saturdays. Many of the local craft breweries are doing some creative things to differentiate themselves. Dogwood Brewing is doing something very different for BC Day. They are throwing a Beach Party on Monday, August 3rd . First up, let’s be clear, there is no beach at Dogwood Brewing, but they are bringing the beach to Dogwood Brewing. They will be bringing in truck loads of sand in the parking lot with some table and chairs outside, a beach umbrella or two. Add to that, our favourite thing, they will be having a sand castle competition and yes there will be prizes. This a smaller brewery, so limited seating in and out, but an extra 22 seats outside for this one day event which kicks off at Noon and goes till 8:00 pm. For those looking for a bite to eat while there, one of Vancouver’s new food trucks will be hand C’est si Bon which we are hearing some good things about. So all you need to bring is your sun hat, your sunscreen and come hang out at the beach at Dogwood Brewing.

Rescue Me: Genie Rottweiler Shepherd Cross Looking For Her Forever Home

GenieSPCAWelcome to the next installment of Rescue Me in which we feature pets waiting for adoption at the Vancouver SPCA. Today we would like to introduce you to a lovely playful girl named Genie. Genie came to the Vancouver SPCA by way of the Drives for Lives program. She is a 5 year old Rottweiler German Shepherd cross and her friends at the Vancouver SPCA think she will have you wrapped around her paw in no time.   Genie is a cheeky playful girl with personality plus.  She lived on a reserve in Prince Rupert and has had a few litters and although a fantastic mom to all her pups, her friends at the SPCA now think it’s time for her to be babied a bit.  Genie loves people of all shapes and sizes. She can be a bit reactive to other dogs so she needs a dog-savvy guardian who is able to work with her on this. Genie has likely never lived inside of a home environment, but she has quickly discovered that she loves everything about it. She particularly likes tossing her toys around the SPCA’s reception area and rolling around their couch.  Nothing is off limits for Genie and she is quite comical at times so sure to bring her new guardians lots of joy. The Vancouver SPCA does feel her new guardians will need to work with her on some basic obedience training and gradual departure exercises as she may initially be anxious in her new environment. She is known to be an escape artist, so leash walks or a home with a fully fenced yard is a must.  Her friends at the Vancouver SPCA also think it’s best that she be the only pet in the household so she get the undivided love and attention she deserves.  If you think you can give Genie a new home, the Vancouver SPCA Shelter, 1205 East 7th Avenue would love to hear from you. 100 In 1 Day – Global Festival of Civic Engagement Comes to Vancouver June 6th

100In1DayYVR100 in 1 Day is happening in Vancouver this Saturday, June 6th. The idea is to bring hundreds of people together on ONE day and each take one small action to improve their city. This is in fact a global festival of civic engagement returning to Metro Vancouver for its second year.  Organizers are encouraging small initiatives to spark change. Everyone is invited to come out and participate. And really, the beginning of any journey, just takes that first step, then another and so on.  We’ve set out a listing of the events happening in East Vancouver, but if you’d like to see the full listing of events, visit 100 In 1 Day Vancouver.

ProVibers People’s Picnic – Victoria Park

This event is hosted by the ProVibers. They would like to see a happy and more connected Vancouver so they are hosting a community potluck in Victoria Park from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Saturday, June 6th.   You are invited to bring food for the potluck, music, games and an openness to meet new people. Their aim is to build community connections in our neighbourhood.

Britannia School Garden Salad Picnic – Britannia School Garden

This event is hosted by the Grandview Woodland Food Connection. Organizers of this event would like people to experience the magic of eating fresh healthy food picked straight from the garden. Organizers invite community residents to come and enjoy the simplicity of eating a freshly picked salad together.  The site is the beautiful Britannia School Garden which is abundant with fresh greens. You will pick veggies for a salad, prepare a healthy salad dressing and savor the taste of eating a fresh salad. While doing this, you will  meet people in your community who are passionate about urban sustainability.  This event begins at 1:00 pm and runs till 3:00 pm on June 6th.  All you need bring if you wish, is a picnic blanket, the rest is provided.

Stories of East Van – Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House

This event is hosted by Christine Nguyen and Eimon Yin. They are looking to connect spaces and people in the Kensington-Cedar Cottage community.  They will be hosting a one hour walking tour highlight the diversity of history, culture and interesting stories that abound in the very places we live and play but often forget to appreciate. There will be two tours offered. One begins in front of Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House at 9:00 am.  The second tour starts at the SouthEast corner of East Broadway & Victoria Drive at 10:30 a.m. As each tour has limited spaces available, you are asked to sign up at Eventbrite.

Love and Letters in the Library Lounge – Kensington Library

This event is hosted by Sarah Green. What do you love about your city, community or neighbours? You are invited to come hang out  and through conversation or typewritten notes share information about your community.  At this event, you will be seated in a mini-lounge where people can come and relax, sit for a moment and maybe meet a neighbor. You will be invited to use a typewriter or write a short love note about your current or future community.  Sarah hopes to highlight where people find value in their surroundings, build connections and share information.
