Dare To Be Square West Kick Off Party At The Wise Hall November 13

SquaredancehugeWould you like to learn how to square dance? Well now you can. Dare To Be Square West is a festival that brings 3 public dances that feature live music and on the spot instructions for the beginners.  We hear that this event draws a “a young, diverse, and enthusiastic crowd from all over the west coast, including Portland, Seattle and Oakland California, which boast vibrant old time dance scenes”  Dare to Be Square West is hosting a weekend of events with workshops that teach beginners the basics of old time dance and dance calling as well as strengthening the skills of experienced callers, dancers and musicians.  We have set out below the 3 events lined up for this upcoming festival:

Kick Off Party At The Wise Hall Friday November 13

This evening will feature music  by Yomada and Shout!WhiteDragon and include callers Paul Silveria, Craig Marcuk and Anne Louise Genest.  Tickets for this event are $20 and available online from Brown Paper Tickets. The event kicks off at 8:00 pm. Again, beginners are welcome.

Southern Squares & French Canadian Dancing At The Ukrainian Hall November 14

This evening will feature the calling of Fred Park coming from North Carolina and music by No Mean Feat . There will also be a performance of French Canadian square dances by Suzanne Girardot with La Famille Leger. The event takes place at the Ukranian Hall, 805 E. Pender Street and kicks off at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $20 and available online at Brown Paper Tickets.

Family Dance At The Ukranian Hall November 15

This event kicks off in the afternoon at 4:30 pm and will feature family-friendly dances called by Sherry Nevins with the Royal Coachmen and an opening set by Professor Banjo and a “crankie” performance by Dejah Leger (Seattle). This is an all ages event.  Tickets are $5.00 per person and tickets are also available online at Brown Paper Tickets.

This event is organized by Paul Silveria who is a Vancouver based square dance caller. Originally from Portland Oregon, Paul learned to call from veteran dance caller Bill Martin surrounded by a thriving old-time music community. Paul has been growing Vancouver’s live-music square dance scene for the past 4 years and is excited to bring this festival to Canada for the first time. callinghuge

Impromptu Rock Choir Tuesday Nights At The Wise Hall

ImpromptuRockChoirDo you love to sing, but have no experience? Maybe you never learned to read music. Well the Impromptu Rock Choir invites you to come out and sing with them on Tuesday nights at the Wise Hall. There are no auditions, no commitments, no waitlist, just fun.   The Impromptu Rock Choir is a new community choir in East Van that began August 11th and is brought to you by Fiona Sizer and Matt Smith.   Matt is a vocalist, pianist and music educator who has been teaching music and directing small ensembles for the past five years.   Fiona on the other hand has no formal musical training, but loves singing and has boundless energy to gather people to have fun. The songs they plan to sing include classic and contemporary rock, pop and indie songs. So far we hear they have sung songs by Oasis, the Killers, Arcade Fire, the Lumineers, Simon & Garfunkel and are about to start Renegade by the X Ambassadors. Doors open each Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street. Singing starts at 7.30 pm and the evening usually goes till 9:00 pm. Drop in fee is $10. 1st Annual Best of Craft At The Wise Hall August 19th

BestofCraftLiberty Merchant Company presents the 1st Annual Best of Craft Tasting Event on Wednesday, August 19th at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street. The evening will feature it all including craft beers, cider, mead & spirits from all over BC along with tasty samplings from Commercial Drive food purveyors. This Liberty Merchant Company sponsored event is also a fundraiser for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society which helps provide food for up to 25,000 people in need each week. All ticket sales and draw prizes directly support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Tickets are $24.99 each and you are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation the night of the event. Tickets are available at all Liberty Wine Merchant locations. In East Vancouver, visit them at 1622 Commercial Drive or call them at 604.633.1922. 2nd Annual Cider and Gluten Free Beer Tasting Event At Wise Hall March 21st

CiderwiseYou are invited to CiderWise taking place at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street, Saturday, March 21st. This delicious tasting event is brought to you by CAMRA Vancouver. As many know, there are a number of people that are gluten-intolerant, sensitive, allergic or choose to omit gluten for health reasons.  Whatever the reason it makes drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages a little challenging. Even more so with the growing craft beer industry right here under our noses in East Vancouver. So we are pleased to see this event back at the Wise Hall to showcase gluten-free beers and ciders.   Some of the participants lined up for this event include Txotx Basque Imports, Merridale Cider, Sea Cider, Left Field Cider Co. and Howling Moon Craft Cider. Want a bite of something to eat in between tastings? Food trucks will be set up outside the Wise Hall for your snacking pleasure with gluten free options of course. Tickets for CiderWISE are available at Eventbrite for $20 for CAMRA, WISE and Vanbrewers Members and $25 for non-members. Event kicks off at 1:00 and goes till 5:00 pm.

Eastside Flea At The Wise Hall Saturday February 21st

EastsideFleaFeb.21The community-oriented Eastside Flea returns to the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street, this Saturday, February 21st.  As usual, they’ve got a great line up of local vendors which will sell everything from mid-century furniture to records to new works by local artists to books to vintage items and so much more.  For this weekend’s market, you can expect to local artist, Andrea Hooge, with handdrawn magnets, prints & pins.  We are hearing about an amazing handmade soap with pine, cedarwood atlas, eucalyptus, fir, patchouli and black pepper by Product of Science and Art.  The Eastside Flea is an all ages event. Admission is $2.00. Eastside Flea runs from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Deck The Halls At The Wise Hall Saturday December 20th

EastsideFleaHoliday2014The Eastside Flea returns to the Wise Hall with Deck The Halls this Saturday, December 20th.  If you are looking for vintage finds, this is the place to be.  There will be over 40 local vendors on hand including Would Boards with locally made wooden skateboards and Forest And The Femme with nature inspired arrangements for your holiday table and of course many more. You will also find carolers making the rounds to keep you in the holiday season. Bring a non-perishable food donation and receive a $1.00 off admission. The Notch Coffee and Local Omnivore food trucks will be located outside keeping everyone caffeinated and fed. The Wise Hall is located at 1887 Adanac Street and the event runs from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. All ages welcome.

Our Fair Neighbour Market At The Wise Hall September 20th

OurFairNeighbourThere’s a new market in town this Saturday, September 20th called ‘Our Fair Neighbour’. It will be taking place at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission is free.   This market is being billed as a market ‘for the people by the people’ with a view to showcasing some of the amazing local talent. Expect to find handmade soap, artisan chocolates, candles, jewellery, prints, clothing, hot sauce or stop by and have your palms read. Concerts and Live at the WISE present the Jim Jones Revue with special guest Cousin Harley this Monday April 21st at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street.  You can expect a show stomping good time.
