Taboo Revue Burlesque Variety Show At Wise Hall Sat. June 29th

28 Jun

ScreamingChickenBurlesque

In 2003 a small group of friends got together with a simple goal – to figure out how to entertain themselves on Monday nights. What started as a simple project has, over the last 10 years, developed into one of the largest and most influential Burlesque troupes in the world today.

Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society has produced well over 200 shows.  They co-founded the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, one of the largest and longest running events in the burlesque world. They have introduced many performers to the stage, been twice nominated for Best Group by Burlesque Hall of Fame in Last Vegas and helped raise money for various charities as well as being a driving force behind Vancouver’s thriving burlesque scene.

This Saturday, June 29th, the ‘Chickens’ will be celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a spectacular show at the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street.  The three act show will feature favorite numbers from throughout their history and representing all aspects of the company’s performances. This will include tributes to their first production, the R-rated ‘Game Show Night’, their theatrical productions ‘Ed Wood’s Orgy of the Dead’, ‘Sex, Violence and Nursery Rhymes’, ‘SHINE – A Burlesque Musical’, ‘Grease Does Greece’, ‘Terror at Rock Out Beach’, and ‘Oliver Fannie’, the graduation recitals for their ‘Becoming Burlesque’ and ‘Becoming Boylesque’ programs and their flagship ‘Taboo Revue Burlesque Variety Show’. The show will also feature special guests including many of the early alumni and long time friends such as Cass King of the legendary Wet Spots.

Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society is a volunteer run not-for-profit organization and all ticket proceeds go to the continued development and presentation of burlesque in Vancouver and around the world. 5% of all ticket sales go directly to the Burlesque Hall of Fame to support the preservation of the art forms history. The doors open at 8:00 p.m. The show gets under way at 9:00 p.m.  Tickets are $15.00 and available from BrownPaperTickets.com.

As well they carry products from Cartems Donuterie,  Earnest Ice Cream, RainCity Soups, Golden Ears Cheesecrafters to name just a few and last but not least their own amazing selection of smoked meats and sausages.  Although yes I stocked up on Earnest Ice Cream while I was there, I also tried their Moroccan Chicken Pie which I highly recommend.  The flavours were amazing. Burlesque Ooh La La!

28 Mar

In case you haven’t noticed, there has been a resurgence of burlesque in the last 20 years. What is burlesque? Wikipedia defines it as “a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subject”.  The modern version has more of a variety show format.   I can tell you that burlesque is alive and well and thriving  in Vancouver, if the number of shows is any evidence.  If you wish to take in a burlesque show, there are a number to choose from with each show offering something titillating for the senses. For starters, this Friday, March 29th the Rio Theatre, 1660 East Broadway, has a cast of burlesque performers including 60s GoGo dancers, jugglers and belly dancers in a presentation of Paris a Minuit.  Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and show starts at 8:00 p.m.  Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

If you miss that performance, the Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac Street, has a Taboo Revue Burlesque show this Saturday, March 30th. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and show starts at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.  If those dates don’t fit your schedule, every Sunday night at The Biltmore Cabaret, 2755 Prince Edward Street, you will find Kitty Nights Burlesque showcasing burlesque originating in New York City for all of $7.00.  Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and show starts at 9:00 p.m.   This show is deemed to be the “Best Place to Meet New People” and listed as one of the top things to do in Vancouver by Lonely Planet travelers. They can’t all be wrong.
