The Gay Heritage Project At The Cultch March 2-19

GayHeritageProjectA contemporary new show is coming to The Cultch this March called The Gay Heritage Project. It features three of Canada’s gifted creator/performers, being Damien Atkins, Paul Dunn and Andrew Kushnir. They will set out to answer the question: “ is there such a thing as gay heritage?”  Damien, Paul & Andrew will uncover events not often shared and will shine a light on contemporary gay culture. What you can expect is a hilarious and moving homage to all those that came before and the events that continue to shape the lives of the gay community.   The Gay Heritage Project runs from March 2 – 19 at The Cultch. Tickets start at $19 and are available online.

Foto Friday – A Walk Around Chinatown & The Drive

ChinatownPidgeonWe hope that everyone enjoyed a fabulous Family Day this past Monday. It was an amazing weather day and it felt like Spring. We saw lots of families walking and cycling as well as dogs being walked and people just venturing out. We did a bit of wandering of our own starting in Chinatown with a stop at Matchstick Coffee before wandering over to The Drive for Family Day. We have set out some photos below of our wanderings. Farewell To The Wise Hall Eastside Flea February 13 & 14

EastsideFleaThis weekend is your last opportunity to check out the Eastside Flea at the Wise Hall at 1882 Adanac Street. Why’s that you ask? Well the Eastside Flea has found a permanent home in the historic Ellis Building on Main Street. As this is a rather neglected building, organizers are looking for a bit of help to spruce up their new digs. They have started an Indiegogo campaign this week to raise $10,000 to bring back some life into this beautiful old building.  They also have some big plans for this new space. They hope to have 15+ artisan studios, a regular ESF marketplace that will host over 50 vendors, a platform for DIY workshops and demos as well as an outdoor courtyard for food trucks and community BBQs.  If you wish to help them breath life into this cool space, visit their Indiegogo campaign.

If you wish to check out the Eastside Flea this weekend, you will find over 60 vendors on both Saturday, February 13th and Sunday, February 14th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.  They will have collectibles, gift cards, handcrafted and vintage jewellery, vinyl records, plants, locally-made body care and a whole host of gift items for that special Valentine.  If you get hungry from all that shopping, they have you covered.  Tacofino food truck will be on hand serving up their amazing tacos outside both days and Kahve & Chai will be indoors serving their signature spicy chai, coffee and tea.  Admission is $3.00. Stop by and support some great local vendors.

Little One Takes Stage At The Firehall Arts Centre February 10-13

LittleOneThe Firehall Arts Centre presents a new show which has received the title of ‘Overall Excellent Award Winner’ by the New York Fringe. The show is called Little One and is brought to you by Vancouver-based Alley Theatre which produced Kayak last year.   The show is billed as a suspenseful psychodrama in which 4-year-old Claire is adopted into the family and 6-year-old Aaron has to learn to “love” his new monster of a sister. The show is told through their now adult voices and the two characters will weave through childhood stories and teenage humiliation which will be twisted, wryly funny and ultimately a haunting narrative   The show opens February 10th and runs till February 13th. East Van Makers: Tyler Spence Making One Of A Kind Furniture

14We love featuring makers and on this past year’s Eastside Culture Crawl, our group started off at the Maker Labs. There we met Tyler Warren Spence, one half of Warren & Wayne Wood Co. The other half being Rory Wayne Bushfield.  These two love the great outdoors and turned their love of collecting old stumps and logs into one of a kind furniture. Tyler works out of Maker Labs in East Vancouver designing and building custom handmade coffee and dining room tables from reclaimed wood. His passion is finding the right piece of wood for each project and creating beautiful, functional furniture that will last a lifetime. Tyler uses recycled material whenever possible and is inspired by the great outdoors.  Tyler has been making furniture for 7 years on a part-time basis, but has in the last 6 months moved to making furniture full-time. He recently completed his first commercial project, being two large banquet style tables for The Airhouse which is a freestyle training centre in Squamish. He used reclaimed fir that was repurposed from a demolition project at The Guildford Town Centre in Surrey. Some of his smaller projects include guitar stands made from red wine barrel staves from the Okanagan (pictured above).   We have set out below photos of some of Tyler’s other projects along with a brief description of where he sourced the wood:

The table top for this piece is from a cedar tree that Tyler found on the shore of Lillooet Lake. The legs of the table are from fallen Arbutus branches from the Sunshine Coast.26

This cabinet was made from Cedar dock boards reused from Tyler’s family cabin on the Sunshine Coast. The wood was originally milled by his grandfather from a fallen tree on their cabin property. After a few decades of use, it was time for the dock to be replaced so he salvaged as much of the wood as he could and created the piece you see below.

Tyler made this table from a Driftwood log found on Spanish Banks in Kitsilano.  It took months for the wood to dry out after which the log was milled into slabs using an Alaskan Mill.

Special Concert At The Cultch February 12th With Barney Bentall, Tom Taylor & Shari Ulrich

BTUA unique concert event is taking place at The Cultch on Friday, February 12th. Barney Bentall, Tom Taylor and Shari Ulrich take the stage and invite you to join them to celebrate the release of their second Album “Tightrope Walk”.  This group has been dubbed “two Canadian legends, and the number one draft pick”.   The trio will be joined by other musicians throughout the event including percussionist Geoff Hicks, bassist Rob Becker and Shari’s daughter who is a violinist as well as Julia Graff, the album’s recording engineer. The show takes place in the Historic Theatre at The Cultch. Tickets are $27.50 and available online.

Some are currently at the Vancouver Shelter, but some of the cats are in foster. Crow Roost Twilight Bike Ride February 13th

CrowinLondonPedroCoboSo crows are an ever present part of life in East Van.  So fitting then that we should all be invited to ride with the crows on Saturday, February 13th.  This event is organized by the Still Moon Arts Society and the Windermere Bike Society.  They invite you to come down with the family, your friends and, of course, your bikes to begin the Crow Roost Twilight Bike Ride at 4:45 pm at the Renfrew Skytrain Station. They will follow the crows on the Central Valley Greenway which is approximately 5 km round trip. This is a rain or shine event, but to ensure safety you are reminded to have lights and/or reflectors for the ride home.   This is a free family friendly event and snacks to share are encouraged.  Come ride with the crows!

The Perky Parsnip Offers Vegan & Gluten Free Cooking Classes

PPAppieWe love food and we enjoy cooking food and are always interested in the abundance of classes being offered in and around Vancouver. Recently we came across The Perky Parsnip which offers classes for those that are interested in vegan and gluten free cooking.  The classes are hosted by Alicia Meek and are held in the evenings at The Float On Bakeshop located at 4384 Fraser Street.  Alicia likes to bring a fun and interactive atmosphere to her cooking class which is suitable for the whole family.  She will teach you how to make dishes that are healthy, organic and high in nutrition.   All her classes are $59 per person with discounts for groups of 4 or more.  Some of her upcoming classes include:

Healthy Sushi At Home – February 28th & April 1st

Alicia will show you the secrets to making delicious sushi at home. This is a hands-on class and each person will be selecting and preparing ingredients for their roll and cone.

Alicia changes the menu for this class depending on what’s in season. She will teach you about carb-free wraps and noodles as well as soy-free meat alternatives and how to make delicious sauces.

Healthy in a Hurry Snacks – March 4th

Come to be inspired and learn how to make satisfying snacks for your family and entertaining. This is again a hands-on-class. You are asked to bring a to-go container.

Guilt-Free Chocolate From Scratch – March 5th

Learn to make chocolate dipped Strawberries, Peanut Butter Cups and more delicious treats with chocolate! Again, this is a hands-on class and a to-go container is recommended so you can take some of your sweet treats home.

Healthy in a Hurry Breakfast – April 2nd

Alicia will teach you how to take 20 minutes preparation time and have days of delicious and healthful breakfasts.

East Van’s What It Is Returns To The Cottage Bistro For Some Soul

WhatItIs!PhotoEast Van’s Soul returns to the Cottage Bistro, 4470 Main Street, this Saturday, February 6th.  Come check out the sounds of What It Is!  This group consists of four amazing East Van ladies, being Mebrat “Mimi” Beyene, Cass King, Patti Powell and Carol Wiedemann.  Together they are a powerhouse of a cappella soul. If you don’t know them, their sound is steeped in the soulful sounds of such greats as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and Etta James.  They are engaging performers and will be sure to have you singing and clapping along with them.  These ladies bring heart to their East Van Soul. If you get the chance, be sure to stop by the Cottage Bistro and give them a listen.  They take the stage at 8:00 pm. The event is $10 at the door or Pay What You Will.
