We Wish You A Happy & Healthy New Year!

Can you believe 2020 is around the corner? It was only 20 years ago, the world was turning 2000 and for those that have been around for a bit, it was the much anticipated Y2K.  A big computer glitch was expected to affect computers and the storage of data and cause major issues. It didn’t really materialize, but something has happened since that time.  Y2K got us thinking about technology and how much it’s evolved. Then we happened on a great tweet compiled by Jon Erlichman of CTV National News that listed all the things that were NOT around 20 years ago. It’s quite a list and just goes to show us how much the world can change in 20 years’ time.  Why do we say this?  Well with the issues of climate change affecting all of us as we move forward into a New Year, it proves all kinds of achievements happen that move us forward.  Which gives us hope going into 2020.  Wishing everyone all the best in 2020! Dine Out Vancouver Festival Returns January 17 to February 2, 2020

Dine Out Vancouver Festival returns January 17th to February 2, 2020. This festival brings together over 300 restaurants, wineries, craft breweries and suppliers for 17 days of dining and culinary events.   This festival evolves each year and provides a little something for all tastes.    The big reveal of which restaurants are participating happens Thursday, January 9th.  Once the list is revealed, you are invited to check out the price fix menus online and make your reservation for brunch, lunch or dinner.  Price fix menus are $15, $25, $35 and $45. Beverages, tax and tip not included.

Each year a number of special culinary events take place during Dine Out and we have to say there are some pretty great ones happening this year.  We’ve highlighted a few that caught our eye, but check them out for yourself. Did you know Dim Sum means “Point of the Heart”. We did not, but they say it lives up to its name in Vancouver’s Chinatown. It was originally a Cantonese family tradition (sometimes called Yum Cha (drink tea)) with small, shared dishes, often served in bamboo steamers, Dim Sum has become a staple for lovers of food worldwide.  You are invited to come learn more about Chinatown’s history and visit a couple of Dim Sum restaurants for tastings as well as a tea ceremony.  This tour is provided by Canadian Craft. Kind’a Last Minute Zero Waste Holiday – Kind Café – December 20

Sounds and Furies presents the Women’s Winter Faire at Heritage Hall this Saturday and Sunday. The Women’s Winter Faire has been running for 25 years and features over 50 booths of creative, funky, beautiful, ecologically-sound and diverse items perfect for gift giving.  Event runs 11:00 am to 5:00 pm both days and admission is by donation $3 to $5 suggested with proceeds going to a local charity.

VoiceStory Live ‘Family’ – The Cultch – December 22

VoiceStory exists to provide a safe, positive space where any adult, regardless of age, gender, race or sexual orientation, can share a moment of their lives and inspire others.   This event is not about promoting a business, pitching you a product or trying to sign you up for a program. It is about putting away our cell phone and listening to and being with others. People tell stories about life, fear, great adventures and more.  This Sunday’s topic is Family.   Special General Admission price this Sunday so you can bring your family with you $15 per person.

Twisted Christmas Party (The Wrong Show) – Waldorf Hotel – December 22

A group of local female comedians take the stage this Sunday at the Waldorf Hotel to bring you a Twisted Christmas Party.  The features the likes of Mrs. Santa Claus, It’s A Wonderful Leaf (vs. Life) and The East Van Grinch.  Expect a crazy apron contents, post show dancing. Movie ‘It’s A Wonderful Life – Rio Theatre – December 22

East Van Panto: Pinocchio – The York – On Now Until January 5, 2020

Our favourite holiday tradition is now on at the York Theatre until January 5th.  Take in this fun and entertaining show that is fun for all ages. Just remember if you are in the front row, you might become part of the production. This year’s panto is Pinocchio and touches on some unique aspects in East Van, such as the mysterious Beckwoman and the coffee wars on The Drive for starters. Vancouver Brewery Tour – East Van Brewery Tour

Vancouver Brewery Tours does great brewery tours in and around East Vancouver and is a perfect gift for the beer lover.  Vancouver Brewery Tours has  regularly scheduled brewery tours which run approximately 3 hours.

Off The Eaten Track – Culinary Tours

Off The Eaten Track offers a number of culinary tours including Railtown Urban Eats Tour and Olympic Village Tour. Tours all begin at the Waterfront Station and times vary but are approximately 2 ½ hours for each.

Little Italy Food Tour – Taste Vancouver Food Tours

Commercial Drive is host to many delish food spots and Taste Vancouver Food Tours offers regularly culinary tours on The Drive Saturday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:30 pm. It starts at Fratelli’s Bakery and hits 8 spots. Cost is $79 per person and they are currently offering 15% off gift certificates.

Federico’s Supper Club – Dinner & Dancing

What about a gift certificate for an evening of dinner and dancing. Federico’s Supper Club offers amazing Italian food, wine and impeccable service. You will regularly find owner, Federico Fuoco, belting out tunes but they regularly bring in lots of local talent to mix things up.

Les Amis Du Fromage – Wine & Cheese Tasting

If you know someone that loves cheese, you may wish to consider purchasing a ticket(s) to one of Les Amis Du Fromage’s upcoming wine & cheese tasting classes. The regularly host tastings, but heads up, these classes do sell out quick. Alternatively, what about a gift certificate to use in store. Trying a variety of cheeses is certainly a delish experience and can get costly, so a gift card to this spot would be welcome in our Christmas stocking.

The Cultch, The York, Firehall Arts Centre – Live Theatre

There is some amazing live theatre that happens in East Van.  Some productions are on now into the New Year at The Cultch, The York and the Firehall Arts Centre. Gift Certificate for an evening out makes a great gift.

Terminal City Glass – Glassblowing Workshop

Have a friend on the artistic side, or someone that wants to get in touch with their creative side? What about a gift certificate to a glassblowing workshop at Terminal City Glass? The Gourmet Warehouse – Cooking Classes

Park Board Gift Card – City of Vancouver

Are you buying a gift for a family? What about a Park Board Gift Card.  Right now a $50 purchase gets you an additional $10 which the recipient can use at any local community centre to swim, skate, do yoga, play golf, take a cooking class, enroll kids in swimming lessons and much more.

Great Edibile Gifts This Holiday Season

JoyGiftsWe love food!  Some of our favourite gifts for the holidays involve delish things to eat or drink. We have found a lot more friends and family favouring edible items as gifts whether food, spirits or accessories that compliment cooking, baking or creating delish refreshments at home.  In East Van, there are so many amazing options to choose from.  On a recent trip to The Drive, we found a great selection of panetonne in Bosa Foods, Fratelli’s Bakery and Donald’s Market.  There are quite a few flavour variations now, but last year we were gifted one and the last bit became french toast. If you haven’t tried this, we do recommend giving it a try.   We’ve set out some suggestions for easy to find edible gifting this holiday season below. Whether it’s a hostess gift, thank you or maybe create your own basket from things you know the person would like, there are many great options close at hand in East Van.

Gift Baskets

There are many shops locally that will create custom gift baskets for you with a food related theme. The include LaGrotta delFrommagio, Bosa Foods, Gourmet Warehouse and Second Nature Home to name just a few.

Cooking Classes

Looking to gift an experience?  Gourmet Warehouse always has a great line up of demonstration cooking classes. They usually run for 3 hours often on the weekends, sometimes in the evening during the week.  The Italian Cultural Centre also features hands on cooking classes.  Most classes you get to eat what you make afterwards.

Craft Beer

No way we could just skip over craft beer as a gift for the beer lover. So many great breweries to choose from each with their own unique offering, but pretty much all offer growlers. If you prefer to give the gift of a brewery tour, our friends at Vancouver Brewery Tours have that covered.

Spirits 

Looking to gift some locally made spirits, we are pretty fond of Odd Society Spirits 1725 Powell Street with a great selection of locally made spirits including East Van Vodka, Wallflower Gin, Cassis, Bittersweet Vermouth and Oaken Wallflower Gin. During the holidays, we love to serve their cassis with prosecco. It’s an easy cocktail when entertaining. There’s also Resurrection Spirits at 1672 Franklin Street. Down side is they are only open Thursday to Saturday from 6:00 pm to 12:00 am whereas Odd Society  Spirits has easier hours for popping in and picking a bottle or two. Odd Society is open Thursday to Sunday 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm save for Sunday evening which they wrap it up at 7:00 pm.  

Pies

I mean who doesn’t love a delicious pie? Andrea and Stephanie French of The Pie Shoppe at 1875 Powell Street make seriously delicious pie.  If you need to bring dessert for Christmas dinner or get together and want to wow family or friends, this is where you pick up your pie.

Great Places To Shop Local This Holiday Season

BuyLocalWe are big supporters of small business. They are the heart of our respective communities. They are opportunities to connect, support other local makers, keep money in our community, a more eco-friendly way to shop which includes less travel time and often less packaging. It’s all around win win in our eyes.  We’ve set out a list of some of our favourite stores for shopping local. One of the many reasons we likes these stores is because they all support other local artisans, makers and small business.  So visit them in person or online and see what items they have that will make that perfect gift for someone special this holiday season.

Bird On A Wire Creations

Bird on A Wire Creations has been a long time supporter of local artists and have gathered quite a collection of beautiful items from a variety of artisans around BC.  If you haven’t checked out this space, we encourage you to stop by. They are located at 2535 Main Street near Broadway.

Doctor Vigari Gallery

Doctor Vigari Gallery is a great space at 1816 Commercial Drive supporting visual artists.  You can find array of items perfect for gift giving including pieces of art from one of our favourite artists June Hunter.

Second Nature Home

Second Nature Home is a home décor boutique located at 3565 Commercial Street in Cedar Cottage.  The store has a wide range of items outside of home décor including  jewellery, gifts for the foodie in your life, something cute for the new baby or new mom and much more. They currently have extended hours running up to Christmas. December 17-23rd they are open until 9:00 pm and Monday, December 24th they are open 11:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Plenty + Spare

Plenty + Spare is located at 2168 East Hasting Street. It’s easy to miss by the smells of their neighbour East Village Bakery which can draw you in by your nose literally, but do stop into Plenty + Spare. They create an array of beautiful handmade bath and beauty products along with a few other items brought in for the holiday season.

Giving Gifts

Giving Gifts is a very cool space located at 4570 Main Street. The store tucked between 30th & 29th Avenue is made of up 5 rooms packed with items from 100 local as well as fair trade artists from around the world.  It is a gift giving boutique so you will easily be able to pick up a few gifts for just about any age.

Tiny Finery

Tiny Finery is a sweet little shop located in Hastings Sunrise at 2629 East Hastings Street that features jewellery as well as local pottery, leather work, prints and some greeting cards.  They also do custom jewellery work if you have something specific in mind.

Jackson’s General Store

Jackson’s General Store is new this year and located at 1490 Kingsway (at Dumfries) near Knight Street. Don’t be fooled on the new, this is an old store reworked and owner, Mike Jackson, has 30 years of business under his belt and eclectic mix of cool and unique items in store. Here you will find a large array of items for gift giving and lots of edibles as well as vintage and retro items. To get a sense of what they have, visit them on   Instagram.

For every $100 you spend with a local business, $46 is re-circulated back into the BC economy (vs $18 for multi nationals). Small business re-circulates 2.6 times more revenue in the local economy as do chains.

Make It! Vancouver – PNE Forum – December 11-15

The biggest handmade market is now at the PNE Forum until Sunday, December 15th.  Expect to find over 250 makers with a wide variety of items including food, clothing, accessories, home décor, gourmet goodies, art, items for babies and kids and a whole lot more.  We are sure you can get a lot of your Christmas shopping done under this one roof.  Admission is $7 at the door, or purchase online through Showpass and save $3.

Crafty Affaire – Croatian Cultural Centre – December 14 & 15

If you are wanting a less crowded shopping experience than Make It!, we encourage you to check out Crafty Affaire at the Croatian Cultural Centre, 3250 Commercial Drive. This one is a fav market, it’s a good sized and well curated market with a variety of  vendors. Market happens 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Admission is by donation.

Holiday At The Elbow Room Café – The Cultch – Until December 29

Holiday at the Elbow Room Café is now on at The Cultch until December 29th. This is a new Cultch holiday tradition inspired by Vancouver’s most iconic café. Expect a hilarious and heartwarming tribute to the long standing café known for slinging sarcasm and insults right along with its food. The show features a cast of characters snowed in at the iconic café. Expect a night of song, dance and laughter.  Tickets are available online at The Cultch.

A Very Swingin’ Christmas – Hungarian Hall – December 15

If you love the sound of big band music and Frank Sinatra, you will want to check out A Very Swingin’ Christmas happening at the Hungarian Hall at Kingsway and Fraser this Sunday night. A Very Swingin’ Christmas At The Hungarian Hall Sunday December 15

DanceLooking to kick up your heels this holiday season with some live music and dancing? If so, you may wish to grab your ticket for A Very Swingin’ Christmas happening this Saturday at the Hungarian Hall at 728 Kingsway near Fraser Street.  The evening features the live music of  Dane Warren (Vancouver’s Premier Frank Sinatra Tribute Artist), vocal sensation Mandy Rushton and John Cronin of the Irish Show Band “Killarney” along with the Bruce James Orchestra, a 17 piece jazz orchestra.  Tickets are $35 until December 13th after which they are $45.  Tickets include some appetizers and one complimentary cocktail, but a cash bar will also be available.  To purchase your ticket in advance, visit Eventbrite. Final Shiny Fuzzy Muddy Happens Collective Happens December 14 & 15 At The Heritage Hall

ShinyFuzzyMuddyDec2019.jpgThis weekend you are invited to check out Shiny Fuzzy Muddy happening at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street (at 15th Avenue).  This is curated annual collection of fine art, craft and design. This is also Shiny Fuzzy Muddy’s 17th and final year of this market. The curated collective is brought to you by artists, Kari Woo, Janna Hurtzig, Arleigh Wood and Frances Dickinson and features some of Western Canada’s brightest talent.  This collaborative event provides a venue that champions craftsmanship over mass production, annually hosting over 30 Canadian and BC based artists to exhibit in an intimate environment where shoppers can mingle with the makers. Throughout the years of this long running show, over 75 Canadian visual artists, makers, designers, jewelers and potters and their products have been featured at events providing a unique platform for consumers to meet the people who create art in the city.

“It’s bittersweet that 2019 will be the final Shiny Fuzzy Muddy show,” says Frances Dickinson, co-founder, of the SFM Collective, “we have seen the growth of slow fashion and handmade design in Vancouver over the past 17 years and we are so proud to have championed this movement.  But now, as artists and designers who crave change and creativity, it’s time for all of us to focus on new projects.”        

This weekend’s Holiday Showcase will feature the following artists:
