East Van Panto: Wizard of Oz – The York 

If you are looking for some family fun this weekend, our choice would be the East Van Panto.  This production now in its 6th year has something for everyone. Fun digs and political references for the big adults and fun interaction for the wee ones.  The production as always pokes a little fun about the unique aspects of our City.  We highly recommend this for a fun night out, or if you prefer a matinee. Tickets available via The Cultch.

Daisy Theatre: A Christmas Carol – The Cultch Until December 22nd

If you have not seen Ronnie Burkett perform with his Daisy Theatre, you truly are missing out.  This production, which is puppets for adults, is back at The Cultch and runs till December 22nd. The energy and creativity that Ronnie brings to each show is nothing short of amazing.  For tickets, visit The Cultch.

Plant Club – Figaro’s Garden Centre – December 7th

We have to admit, we love Figaro’s Garden Centre at 1896 Victoria Drive (at 3rd Ave). This Friday, you are invited to Plant Club.  Stop by and have a glass of wine between 3:30 and 6:00 pm and talk plants, or stop by to make a swag or wreath with them for the holiday season.

Tugboat Landing Artisan Market – 2010 East Kent Avenue – December 8th

The 3rd Annual Tugboat Landing Artisan Market happens this Saturday at 2010 East Kent Ave (at Victoria Drive) on the Fraser River in SE Vancouver. This is a curated market with just over 20 vendors offering a great array of items perfect for gift giving this holiday season.  There will be coffee, tea and sweets available all by donation with proceeds benefitting the Vancouver BC SPCA.  Did we mention, ILiveInEastVan will be there as a vendor with tote bags, t-shirts, toques and more.  Stop by and say hello. Free admission. Event happens 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Mushroom Cultivation – Collingwood Neighbourhood House – December 8th

If you are interested in growing and cultivating mushrooms, there’s an introductory Workshop this Saturday at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  You will learn lots of simple DIY methods. Cost is $35. To register, email collingwoodurbanag@gmail.com.

Weirdos Holiday Market – Wise Hall – December 8th & 9th

This weekend the Wise Hall plays host to the Weirdos Holiday Market. Think eclectic, outlandish, unique and unusual gifts that are most definitely on the quirky side.  Admission is $2 and happens Saturday and Sunday 11:00 am – 6 pm.

Winter Wonderland – Mt. Pleasant Neighbhourhood House –December 8th

This weekend, Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House hosts a Winter Wonderland. You are invited to walk through a Winter Wonderland, take a picture with Santa and enjoy a breakfast of pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage along with coffee & tea. Cost for Winter Wonderland only is $2 per person.  For Breakfast and Winter Wonderland, the cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children 3-12 years, children 2 and under are free.  Breakfast event happens Saturday with time slots from 9:30 am to Noon.  Winter Wonderland is also available December 6th & 7th. Shiny Fuzzy Muddy – Heritage Hall – December 8th & 9th

Shiny Fuzzy Muddy  happens this weekend at the Heritage Hall, 3102 Main Street. This is  a curated market featuring amazing talent in design, art and fine craft.  Their Holiday Showcase happens Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Admission is $4.00 at the door.

Mr. Dance Christmas Party – The Alpen Club – December 9th

If you love to dance and want others to dance with, then the Alpen Club might be the place for you this Sunday.  Mr. Dance regularly features 1 hour dance lessons on Sunday nights at The Alpen Club on Victoria at 33rd Avenue. This Sunday is their Christmas Party which will again feature at 1 hour dance lesson at 6:30 pm followed by a dance show and dancing until 11:00 pm. There is free parking and hearty German food available from The Alpen Club.   Admission is $12.

Comedy, Entertainment & Live Music

Looking for live music, Libra Room on The Drive has a regular line up of music. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3-7 pm, no cover.

Two winter farmer markets happen this weekend. Saturday it’s the Riley Park Farmers Market from a0:00 am to 2:00 pm and Sunday, the Hastings Park Farmers Market also happens from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. To see more of what’s on in East Vancouver, check our Event Listing.

Eastside Flea – 550 Malkin Avenue – Dec. 1st & 2nd

The Eastside Flea is in full swing this weekend for holiday shopping. Lots of great local vendors on hand to help make your Christmas shopping easy. PLUS, they are taking donations of a variety of personal items including cosmetics, toiletries, clothing, etc. which will be distributed to the WISH Drop In Centre Society and Ray Cam Cooperative Centre. The Eastside Flea happens from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday.

June Hunter Studio Sale – November 30th – December 2nd

Calling all nature and wildlife lovers, this is the spot to head to this weekend to do some relaxed gift shopping. East Van artist June Hunter is hosting her annual Holiday Studio Sale this Friday (2:00 pm to 7:00 pm), Saturday and Sunday (10:00 am – 5:00 pm).  The setting is her idyllic back yard studio complete with an offering of mulled wine and Christmas baking.  We hear some delish Gingerbread muffins will be on hand. June’s studio is located in the Hastings Sunrise area at 2785 Parker Street.

Crafty Affaire  Holiday Market – Croatian Cultural Centre – December 1st

The Crafty Affaire Holiday Market happens at the Croatian Cultural Centre this Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. They have a great line up of vendors including some favourites like Odd Society Spirits, Sriracha Revolver, Eb & Flo Designs, East Van Bees and Sealuxe to name a few.  Check out their website and we see some cool lamps by Usedful.  We’ll be keeping an eye on them.  Admission for the market is by donation.  First 25 people in the door will get a swag bag.

Vancouver Giants – Pacific Coliseum – December 1st

If you miss watching the Vancouver Giants play hockey at the Pacific Coliseum, this Saturday is your chance.  The boys will be back for a game against Tri-City Americans. Game starts at 7:00 pm. For tickets visit Ticketleader. Note, they are back for a second game December 8th which is the infamous Teddy Bear Toss. So you can purchase tickets for one event or both.

Mini Folk Fest – Wise Hall – December 1st

A fun all ages afternoon event at the Wise Hall. Professor Banjo and others host square dancing from 3:00 pm– 5:30 pm at the Wise Hall. Tickets range between $10 – $40, Kids under 5 are free.

The Enemy – Firehall Arts Centre – Until December 1st

A contemporary political drama finishes its run this weekend at the Firehall Arts Centre. The Enemy is an interpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, a female Dr. Stockman discovers contamination in the community’s water source and is branded an enemy and accused of destroying the local economy. For tickets, visit Firehall Arts Centre.

Our Social Fabric: Fabric Sale – 1275 Venables Street – December 2nd

If you are doing some sewing or crafting for the holiday season, you may wish to check out the Fabric Sale at Our Social Friday this Sunday.  It’s their last sale of the year happening at 1275 Venables Street (at Clark) from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. There will be some great deals to be had.

Purebread In Mount Pleasant – Carb Heaven

We’ve heard the hype about Purebread. We didn’t experience it though until recently when we ventured to their new Mount Pleasant location. If you are unfamiliar with the name, this business hails from Whistler and has a loyal and dedicated following.  They did open a location in Gastown a couple of years ago, but this year opened a location in Mount Pleasant at 5 East 5th Avenue.  It’s been on our radar to check out and we are so glad we did. We decided this was our spot to fuel up before taking on The Eastside Culture Crawl for the day. On entering Purebread, we saw the long line up of people happily waiting. No disgruntled people here.  Most in line oogling all the items before them, it seemed to have a calming effect on everyone. For a first timer, it was a little daunting making a selection amongst a long line of people, but it seems the staff is used to those overwhelmed by the sheer number of options.  Staff are quite understanding yet still adept at keeping the line moving. Having said that, if you aren’t quick, you could miss out on that one last item of whatever it is you are eyeing, but once that one item disappears, the good thing is something equally delicious will quickly take its place. Some of the rotating items on offer include a selection of house-baked breads, rustic baguettes, ciabatta as well as breakfast items bacon and egg brioche, zucchini bacon and cheese muffins, almond croissants, scones, coconut macaroons. Their sweets are every bit as drool worthy and include flourless brownies, meringues, macaroons, cookies the side of your hand, carrot cake, salted caramel bars and so much more.   We sampled a couple of items and of course took some home.  Nothing was a disappointment. The flourless brownie though a clear stand out.  Whether you are eating in or doing take-out, this is a great spot. Many portions are large and easily divided up for sharing/tasting.  Purebread is pure carb heaven.  If you haven’t already made your way over, we recommend you make the trip to 5 East 5th Avenue.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever At The Havana Theatre December 6-16, 2018

The Best Christmas Pageant EverYou are invited to check out a new lively Christmas production The Best Christmas Pageant Ever coming to the Havana Theatre December 6 to 16, 2018. Naked Goddess Productions brings you a play that is not all sugar and spice but a truer picture of family life. Well some homes anyway. This story is about some real world SH_T disturbers, hmmm much like you may have found (or may still find) in East Van tucked away in that idyllic looking house down the street. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is about six siblings, the Herdman kids. who take over an annual Christmas pageant resulting in quite a bit of mayhem and a lot of laughs.  The show runs Wednesday to Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm with matinees on Saturday December 8, 9, 15 and 16, 2018  at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $24 for adults, $18 for seniors/children.  Those on a budget, check out the half price preview on December 5th.  You can purchase tickets at the door or online at Showpass. Be sure to stop and have a little fun this holiday season. We think this is the perfect ticket.

Holiday Market – Italian Cultural Centre – November 23rd

The Italian Cultural Centre is hosting their annual Holiday Market this Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. You can expect to find some traditional Italian food products including olive oil, panettone and Christmas cookies in amongst 40 local vendors featuring wine, pottery, jewellery, chocolates and a host of gift ideas.  Admission is free and as always, there will be some delish food available for purchase and likely a few food trucks at the ready as well. For those with young ones, there will be a Kids Corner from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm featuring free photos (with your camera) with Mr. & Mrs. Claus.

The Dark Eighties Fall Ball – Eastside Studios – November 23rd

Maker Market At The Ellis – 1024 Main Street – November 23rd

Maker Market at the Ellis 2.0 is happening this Friday night from 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm. You are invited to come shop and support some of Vancouver’s local makers whilst enjoying a happy hour cocktail featuring some of their products. Food trucks will be on hand for those that get hungry. Entry is free. Everyone welcome. This is a family and dog friendly event.

20th Annual West Coast Guitar Night – The Cultch – November 24th

This Saturday, The Cultch plays host to the 20th Annual West Coast Guitar Night. The evening features acoustic jazz, classical, folk, world, flamenco and more.  This should be a spectacular musical evening. Tickets are $34 and available at The Cultch.

Christmas On The Drive – Grandview Park – November 24th

The Commercial Drive BIA is hosting Christmas On The Drive this Saturday at Grandview Park between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm. The event features free pictures with Santa, a horse-drawn carriage rides down Commercial Drive a tree lighting at 5:00 pm.  There will be some live music on the main stage in Grandview Park along with lots of activities for the kids including face painting, balloon twisting and caricatures.  Hot chocolate and cider will be available to keep you warm.

Movie ‘Sharkwater Extinction – Rio Theatre November 24th

An important movie ‘Sharkwater Extinction’ by activist and filmmaker Rob Stewart shows at the Rio Theatre this Saturday afternoon.  Rob Stewart shows how sharks are being hunted to extinction, and with that comes the destruction of our life support system. The filmmaker’s aim is to help stop the slaughter. In the movie, he follow sharks and the money  into the elusive pirate fishing industry.  Movie shows at 1:45 pm Saturday. If you can’t make it then, it will be shown again Sunday at 5:10 pm.

The Daisy Theatre Returns To The Cultch December 4-22, 2018 With A Christmas Carol

LittleDickensThe ever popular Ronnie Burkett brings the Daisy Theatre back to The Cultch for his production of a Christmas Carol with the Little Dickens. If you don’t know about the Daisy Theatre, you are missing a whole lot of fun. This is an adult puppet show performed By Ronnie Burkett.  If you think the idea of a puppet show doesn’t appeal to you, try it, you will be surprised.  The Daisy Theatre is unlike anything you have ever seen. Ronnie Burkett, puppeteer provocateur and his company of over 40 marionettes, will not only entertain you, but will be sure to have you riding a wave of emotion as he brings his puppets to life. The energy he brings to his puppetry is rather awe inspiring not to mention how he seamlessly transitions between all the characters. In this  production of The Little Dickens, the cast of The Daisy Theatre take on the beloved holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, in the merriest marionette mash-up ever. Faded Daisy diva, Esmé Massengill, plays the role of miserly, drunken, bitter Esmé Scrooge, in this Burkett-esque retelling of the Dickens classic.  Ronnie Burkett brings a sharp wit to his characters when he needs to, but he can be as soft as kitten when playing the character Schnitzel who usually begins and finishes his show. Each performance is different, daring and ridiculous.  The Georgia Straight has previously called it “one of the best shows you’ll ever see”.  Tickets start at $24 and are available online at The Cultch.  Note, due to the mature content this is a 19+ show.

Artisan Markets & Craft Fairs In East Van 2018

Christmasblue&whiteballsIt’s that time of year again where the opportunities to shop local are abundant.  There are some great artisan markets and craft fairs coming up to help you make your gift giving easy whether for Christmas or birthday gifts.  There is a phrase that makes the rounds on social media “when you buy from a local maker, someone does a little happy dance”. It really is true.  Did you know “for every $100 spent with a BC local business, $46 is re-circulated back into our BC economy versus $18 for multi nationals. Why? Because locally owned businesses circulate more dollars in the community compared to multinational organizations.” When you buy from a local maker, you’re supporting your neighbor next door, your co-worker working full-time and holding down a side gig, moms carving out some extra income while still being home with their families. All have created a business doing something they love and are passionate about.  We are 100% behind supporting those local dreamers and makers. The Enemy is an interpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, a female Dr. Stockman discovers contamination in the community’s water source and is branded an enemy and accused of destroying the local economy. Comedy, Entertainment & Live Music

If it’s comedy you are after, Graham Clark’s Laugh Gallery happens at Havana Theatre every Monday night.  For live music, the Libra Room on The Drive has a regular line up of music. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3-7 pm, no cover.

This weekend it’s two winter farmer markets. Saturday there’s Riley Park (10 am – 2 pm) and Sunday, the Hastings Park Farmers Market also happens from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. To see more of what’s on in East Vancouver, check our Event Listing.

Art Of East Van By ILIEV Designs Featuring Artist Kat McPhee

KatMcPheeWe are big fans of the amazing artistic talent we have in East Vancouver. Whether it’s behind the studio walls or in the alley way.  We decided that we wanted to blend our love of the environment, using less plastic and at the same time showcase East Van art.   ILiveInEastVan is partnering with East Van artists to showcase their art work on canvas tote bags.

Today we are excited to launch the Art Of East Van by ILIEV Designs featuring our first artist Kat McPhee. We’ve been following Kat for a few years and love her edgy work that has a definite street vibe. Kat is a self-taught artist that creates vibrant portraits and mixed media prints using elements of graffiti and animation as inspiration.  We have created 3 tote bags featuring Kat’s portraits. As you can see from the photo below, we have totes featuring the stunning Audrey Hepburn, the larger than life Anthony Bourdain and the make my day Clint Eastwood.  These totes are now available for sale at Kat’s studio which is located in the Arts Factory, 281 Industrial Avenue (near Main & Terminal) along with 20 other artists. Their studios are now open for the Eastside Culture Crawl.  We invite to stop by and check out her work during The Crawl happening November 15th & 16th from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm and November 17th & 18th from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

2nd Annual Disney Charity Show November 18th Fundraiser For Music Heals

DisneyMusic2018On Sunday, November 18th, you are invited to the 2nd Annual Disney Charity Show being held at the Notional Space, 1523 East Pender Street. Their inaugural event was held last year on The Drive in the evening. Feedback was that people wished to come with their children during the day, so woola. Organizers listened and are now hosting their next Disney Charity Show the afternoon of November 18th.  Doors open at 1:00 pm, show beings at 1:30 pm. This a fundraiser for Music Heals which raises money for music therapy programs in Canada. Tickets are a very reasonable $10 and available at the door.
