Molly Misbegotten – Havana Theatre – May 15th to 19th 

An intimate coming-of-age four act drama with a naive-adolescent named Elijah Berner who succumbs to the harsh realities of attempting to recreate a moment he lost long ago. Show happens in the Havana Theatre tucked in the back of Havana Restaurant. Tickets are $15 and available through Brown Paper Tickets.

INGITE! Youth Driven Arts Festival – The Cultch – May 15th – 19th

For one week in May, The Cultch is taken over and transformed by young people. Hundreds of youth are involved in what has grown to be Vancouver’s largest youth-driven arts festival. IGNITE! showcases music, dance, and spoken word. It will also  feature three one-act plays, a visual arts exhibit, variety shows featuring improv, drag, circus arts, and much more. Bakery Pop Up – les amis du fromge (East Van) – May 19th

Les amis du fromage’s East Van location, 843 East Hastings Street, is hosting another Bakery Pop Up Shop this Saturday, May 19th. This week Lakehouse Foods will be on hand from Noon to 5:00 pm or until they sell out.

Forage – Trillium North Park – May 19th

Learn to gather, use and make items from wool this Saturday, May 19th at Trillium North Park.  This is one of six free sessions featuring different local fibres. This week, learn traditional hand skills that are the foundation of many weaving techniques. Event runs from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Victoria Day Family Fun – Trout Lake –  May 21st

Trout Lake Community Centre is hosting some free family fun this Monday, May 21st from 10:00 am to Noon.  They will have a bouncy castle set up indoors, arts and crafts and games.  Free for all to attend, but pre-registration is requested.

Live Music, Comedy & Entertainment

Classical Guitar Open Mic Night – Café Deux Soleils – May 11th

Do you own or play a classical guitar? You are invited to an open mic night at Café Deux Soleils tonight, May 11th. You are welcome to come play in a casual setting.  If you are interested in performing, just drop them a note you are stopping by.  Show kicks off at 8:30 pm.

Bears – The Cultch – May 11th – 13th

A political play about pipelines, Bears, is on at The Cultch this weekend.  It is a multi-disciplinary dark comedy is about the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline.  This is an Indigenous-led play told through dramatic storytelling and choreography, with an eight-person chorus, enchanting projections, and an evocative electronic soundscape.  The production has only a short run. If you wish to catch it, tickets can be purchased online at The Cultch.

Playland – May 12th & May 13th

23rd Annual Stone Soup Festival – Britannia Community Centre – May 12th

A great free community event happens this Saturday, May 12th at Britannia Community Centre from Noon – 5 pm.  The 23rd Annual Stone Soup Festival happens which celebrates food, art, the environment and community.

Grow A Great Organic Garden – Italian Cultural Centre – May 12th 

The Italian Cultural Centre is hosting a workshop for aspiring gardeners on Saturday, May 12th.  Shauna MacKinnon will lead this workshop and teach you how to grow a veggie garden using organic practices.  Cost is $25 per person. Hammer and Tong Present the East Van Showcase – Rio Theatre – May 13th 

Check out film students from all over BC that will compete in the first ever Student Showdown at the Rio Theatre Sunday evening.  Students from SFU, UBC, Capilano and Vancouver Film School will be featured along with some international shorts. Event kicks off at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Put Yourself First Without The Guilt – Trout Lake Community Centre May 16th

The City of Vancouver and Trout Lake Community Centre are hosting a FREE interactive workshop for women on May 16th.  If you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed and underappreciated, you are invited to attend to learn more to how make more time for yourself.  Workshop happens from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. East Van artist June Hunter is hosting a Studio Sale this weekend which kicks off Friday at 2:00 pm. With Mother’s Day soon on the horizon, we are sure you’ll be able to find a little something for mom or yourself.

Got Craft – Maritime Labour Centre – May 5th & 6th

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Got Craft is happening at the Maritime Labour Centre at 1880 Triumph Street Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. The event features  local artisans including some favourites such as The Lemon Square, East Van Bees, Salty Cookie Co. and East Van Jam for something edible.  Newbies include Scouter Wear Dog Wear and Riding The Pine which has some cool designs featuring hockey sticks. Mother’s Day Crafternoon – Lupii Café – May 5th

An interesting creative workshop is happening at Lupii Café in Champlain Heights this Saturday.  Crafting With Crap is hosting an upcycling workshop in partnership with Lupii Café.  You will learn to make some crafty gifts for mom including DIY bath salts and reusable packaging. Cost is $5.83 and registration is through Eventbrite.

21st Century Flea Market – Croatian Cultural Centre – May 6th

The 21st Century Flea Market happens this Sunday, May 6th at the Croatian Cultural Centre.  If you are a collector of bargain hunter, this is the spot for you. Spring/Summer Farmer Markets Kick Off This Weekend

This weekend Spring and Summer markets kick off.  First up is Riley Park Farmers Market at Ontario St. & 30th Avenue this Saturday from 10 am – 2 pm.  There is one more week of the Hastings Park Winter Farmers Market this Sunday from 10 am – 2 pm.  Next Saturday Trout Lake Farmers Market returns to Trout Lake.

Documentary ‘Directly Affected’ – Rio Theatre – April 28th 

This compelling new documentary DIRECTLY AFFECTED, takes an in-depth look at the issues surrounding the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Zack will also be in attendance and will participate in a post-screening Q&A, as will some other special guests.  Movie kicks off at 3:15 pm.

Deeley’s Day For Animals – Trev Deeley Motorcycles – April 28th

24 Hour Bike-A-Thon – 1739 Venables Street – April 13th

If you love bikes, or want to learn more about them (ie. fixing them), there’s an interesting event happening this Friday. It’s a 24 Hour Bike-A-Thon. Kickstand Community Bike Shop which will help teach people that have never built a bike (but note most of the work will be refurbishing instead of starting from scratch). They plan to build 24 bikes in 24 hours with sustenance from Moja Coffee and Renzo’s Cafe. Event starts at 6:00 pm at 1739 Venables.

Bird on Stilts Workshop – Trout Lake Community Centre – April 15th

The 2nd Annual East Van Old Time Social – Russian Hall April 6th & 7th 

The Second Annual East Van Old Time Social is a weekend event dedicated to old-time string band music, and up-beat, beginner friendly, live music square dances. You are invited to come by the Russian Hall and listen to great tunes and dance the night away. There will be beginner friendly square dances.

Feast of Fools – Strange Fellow Brewing – April 7th

Local burlesque legend Burgundy Brix will be teaching this workshop being held at Your Open Closet. Haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a writer checks into New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song. Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not only forget, but erase from memory. This is the premise of the Chelsa Hotel which pays tribute to the songs of Leonard Cohen. This production on its final run continues this weekend. Rio Theatre – Old School #SaveTheRio Fundraisers – March 30th and 31st 

If you are a fan of the Rio Theatre and wish to support a great spot for independent theatre, musicians and performers, check out the telethon like fundraising events happening this weekend. First up, is An Evening With Kevin Smith. There are 2 shows 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm on Friday, March 30th. Advance tickets are sold out, but there will be some tickets at the door. River District in SE Vancouver is hosting a golden egg hunt Sunday, April 1st from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. There will be chocolate egg hunts, balloons, cotton candy, crafts, face painting and a chocolate bunny draw.  Starbucks will be on hand serving hot chocolate and coffee. Romer’s Burgers providing frozen yogurt and mini doughnuts. This is a free event, but registration is requested.

Easter Eggstravaganza Swim – Britannia Pool – April 1st

Side Glance With Al Tee – Honest Nat’s Department Store – History On Fraser Street

HonestNat'sDept.StoreSometimes travelling around East Van, it feels like being part of something on National Geographic or History Channel. One of those programs about lost civilizations. Worlds that no longer exist and what fragments remain.

There’s an old radio jingle that’s an example of the lost world of East Van. The ad was for Honest Nat’s Department Store and if you’ve lived here long enough you know what three words follow the store’s name.

But beyond the jingle there’s no history of a department store that once was an anchor on the principal commercial ribbon of East Vancouver. Located at 6394 Fraser, Honest Nat’s was the brainchild of Nathan Lacterman. A prairie orphan who escaped Winnipeg and came West, Lacterman made several unsuccessful stabs at the retail business in Vancouver.  Then a chance visit to Toronto lead him to stumble across the famed discount store Honest Ed’s at Bloor and Bathhurst. Inspired, Honest Nat’s was born.

Honest Nat’s department store would last at 48th and Fraser for 40 plus years. Supporting the community, sponsoring teams, doling out balloons to customer’s kids, Honest Nat Lacterman acted as the unofficial mayor of Fraser Street. Eventually Honest Nat fell ill and his daughter took over. But Fraser Street started to change. A Superstore came in at the bottom of Fraser along Marine Drive. When Nat’s daughter started hearing patrons tell her that they’d looked all over town for an item they couldn’t find, but knew Honest Nat’s would have it, she saw the writing on the wall. Why weren’t they coming straight to Honest Nat’s in the first place?  Honest Nat’s Department Store closed in 1989 and the building was sold. Shortly afterwards, it was destroyed by fire.

All that remains now of Honest Nat’s Department store is this artifact, the jingle.

Gem & Mineral Show – Hastings Community Centre – March 17th & 18th

If you love rocks, gems and want to learn more about them, you have a great opportunity to do just that at the Rock & Mineral Show happening this weekend. 4th Annual Beer BASH League – Britannia Community Centre – March 10th

If you love beer and hockey, then you may wish to check out the 4th Annual Beer League BASH taking place this Saturday, March 10th at Britannia Community Ice Rink, 1661 Napier Street.  This is a fundraiser in which 4 craft brewery teams will be playing a round-robin tournament for the purpose of raising funds for BASH: Britannia After School Hockey.   17 craft breweries will be also be on hand serving cans of beer. For those that have gently-used hockey gear to donate (ie. Elbow pads, helmets, socks, sticks, etc.), you will receive a discount on beer for each item donated. Event happens from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Tickets are $20 and available online from BeerBashLeague.com

Manure Sale – Fundraiser – Dr. AR Lord March 10th

Pick up some manure for your garden and help kids playing sports in East Vancouver. Pretty darn easy. Event happens between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm at 1025 Slocan Street in the Garibaldi Annex Parking Lot at the corner off Slocan and Napier. Cost is $5 per 5 gallon bag.  If you come with your own wheelbarrow before 11:00 am, we hear there’s a discount in it for you.

Bridal Swap – Croatian Cultural Centre – March 11th

If you are getting married soon and have a budget in mind, then you will want to check out the upcoming Bridal Swap at the Croatian Cultural Centre this Sunday, March 11th.    For tickets, visit Eventbrite. Note there are different times and pricing depending on whether you wish to be an early bird and get first dibs on items in which ticket prices are a bit more.

Carnival With Crepes – Strange Fellows Brewing – March 11th

Strange Fellow Brewing is hosting an interesting event complete with crepes, beer and live music from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. This is a family friendly event, Children are welcome under supervision of adults, of course.

The After After Party – The Cultch – To March 17th

Fresh Prints Art Party At The Settlement Building March 15th

The Settlement Building is host to a very cool event March 15th called Art Party! This is a fundraiser for Creative Life. This is a Community Arts initiative that creates opportunities for marginalized youth in East Vancouver to experience transformation through the arts.  For a $10 ticket, you have the opportunity to check local visual artists while enjoying music, drinks and food.
