The Dirty Betty Show – Café Deux Soleils – December 2, 2017 

This is a fun night out complete with hot comedians, improvisors and drag superstars.  The fun happens at Café Deux Soleils Saturday night at 8:30 pm. Tickets $10 at the door.

Artisan Markets / Craft Fairs – December 2 & 3, 2017 

To get a jump on your Christmas shopping, we invite you to check out some of the smaller artisan markets happening around Vancouver this weekend.  Saturday you will find Tugboat Landing Artisan Market on the Fraser River at the foot of Victoria Drive in SE Vancouver 11 am – 4 pm.  If Sunday’s a better day to get out and shop, River District Winter Craft Fair happens at the foot of Kerr Street from 11 am – 4 pm.  The East Side Best Holiday Shop happens at the Russian Hall from 11 am – 5 pm and delish homemade dumplings will be available.  Also Sunday in Hastings Sunrise, great spot Di Oliva Tasting Bar on East Hastings at Slocan Street is hosting an art sale with local makers and delish tastings of the olive oils and balsamic vinegars.

East Van Panto – York Theatre

One of our favourite events of the holiday season kicked off this week, the East Van Panto. This year’s theme Snow White & The Seven Dwarves is a guaranteed night of fun and laughs for the whole family.  This is a production that gets better every year, if that’s possible. It’s musical, fun, clever and pokes a little fun here and there at East Van, our Mayor Moonbeam, transit, traffic, cyclists and whatever tickles the writers and producers fancy that year.  The East Van Panto previewed November 29th and continues to January 6, 2018, but tickets are selling quick. So be sure to grab some tickets while you can.

Ronnie Burkett’s – The Little Dickens – The Cultch – December 5, 2017

Ronnie Burkett is back Tuesday, December 5th with his show The Little Dickens at The Cultch. This is puppets for adults and we do mean 19+. Ronnie Burkett is a master puppeteer and he will having you rolling in the aisles, if not up on stage for a bit of a hand.  Not to be missed if you want a fun night out.  The Georgia Straight has previously called it “one of the best shows you’ll ever see”.  Tickets start at $22 and are available online at The Cultch.

Retro & Design Fair – Croatian Cultural Centre – December 3, 2017

A Retro Design & Antiques Fair happens this Sunday, December 3rd at the Croatian Cultural Centre, 3250 Commercial Drive. There will be 175 vendors on hand with a variety of items plus ‘drop-in appraisals’. The event runs from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. General admission is $5 at the door. There will also be a special early-bird admission for $20 from 7:00 am – 10:00 am for those wanting a jump on things.

DIY Holiday Gifts – Little Mountain Neighbourhood House – December 5, 2017

The Little Mountain Neighbourhood House, 3981 Main Street, is hosting a do it yourself workshop Tuesday, December 5th.   Some of the things you will be learning to make include candles and bath bombs. This is a free workshop and open to everyone. Workshop runs from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

A Kutapira Kristmas – December 9, 2017

Kutapira brings a high energy Afro-Cuban sound with melodies from Zimbabwe. Event happens at 657 East 15th (Fraser & Kingsway). Tickets in advance are $12 through Eventbrite or at the door for $18. Best hat gets in free.

If you love the old delta blues, swing, jazz and ragtime music, then you best head over to The Wise Hall this Friday night.  Blue Moon Marquee  will be performing along with Gillian Moranz and The Milk Crate Bandits.

The Italian Christmas Market – Italian Cultural Centre – November 24, 2017

If you can believe it, Christmas is just over a month away.  Although hard to wrap one’s head around.  If you want to get a jump on your gift shopping, check out the The Italian Christmas Market at the Italian Cultural Centre happening from 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm. We love that this is an evening event, lots of great local vendors plus food trucks.

June Hunter – Studio Sale – November 25, 2017

East Van artist, June Hunter, is having a one day studio sale this weekend Saturday, November 25th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.   June has a great selection of prints, art, jewellery, coasters the majority feature some aspect of nature. Whether you are looking for a birthday gift or Christmas gift, stop by June’s studio for some civilized leisurely shopping in the comfort of her studio. We expect there will be some cookies and refreshments on hand. Studio is located in the back of 2785 Parker Street. 

3rd Annual Burlesque Marathon – Rio Theatre – November 25, 2017 

The Rio Theatre hosts 25 burlesque dancers who will be performing for the camera to apply for festivals and competitions around the world. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

Eastside Culture Crawl – Various Locations – November 16-19, 2017

Over 480 artists open their studios to the public during the Eastside Culture Crawl. It is an amazing opportunity to check out all the talent that’s packed in Vancouver. Whether you go for a few hours or all day and/or evening we recommend checking out this event in some fashion. Lots to eat and nibble whilst you wander. If you missed our feature Bits & Bites, check it out to see where’s a good spot to refuel.

Print Making Workshop – Strange Fellows Brewing – November 18 & 19, 2017

Strange Fellows Brewing on Clark Drive is again joining in on the fun of the Eastside Culture Crawl. They will be hosting a printmaking workshop Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. This is a first come served event and space is limited. All ages are welcome.

Britannia Christmas Craft Fair – Britannia Community Centre – November 17-19, 2017

The Britannia Christmas Craft Fair will be held at the Britannia Community Centre Friday afternoon from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and will continue over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Admission is free, stop in and check out this long standing community event. If you ever wanted to try your hand at modern calligraphy, your chance is this Sunday, November 19th.   LeLe Chan Designs will be leading this cool workshop happening at Barefoot Contessa at 3715 Main Street. In this 2 hour workshop, you will learn how to use the tools, the basic strokes and letter form. Cost is $150 and registration via Eventbrite.

Chocolate Lovers Cooking Class – Trout Lake Comm. Centre – November 19, 2017

Love chocolate?  Then you may wish to spend what is expected to be a rainy afternoon making chocolate lava cakes and our delectable goodness that you get to eat and/or take home with you.  Class is hosted by the lovely Valentine of Tartine & Maple. Coco Love Alcorn – Rio Theatre – November 21 & 22, 2017

Coco Love Alcorn will be playing at the Rio Theatre this coming Tuesday, November 21st along with her band. She will also be joined on stage by 6 local choirs over the 2 nights. She’s a local favourite. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

WISE Wednesday Drop-In Stich & Craft- Wise Hall – November 21, 2017

If you’re crafty and want to hang out with other creative crafters, WISE Wednesday Drop-In Stitch & Craft happens weekly at the Wise Hall. Whether you knit, crochet, embroider, needlepoint or something else portable, stop by. Everyone is welcome. Only Drunks & Small Children Tell The Truth – Firehall Arts Centre – Nov. 11, 2017

A play written by Indigenous playwright Drew Hayden Taylor, Only Drunks and Children Tell The Truth comes to the Firehall Arts Centre this Saturday, November 11th. The story is a gripping account of the “60’s scoop-up” phenomenon, in which Native children were taken from their families, their communities, and their culture to be adopted into white households.  Tickets are available from the Firehall Arts Centre.

Funny Man Fundraiser – Rio Theatre – November 11, 2017

You’re invited to a comedy fundraiser being held at the Rio Theatre this Saturday night. A funny line up of talent includes Kyle Bottom, Mayce Galoni, Mike McGuire and others who will be taking the stage to help raise funds for Tumour Foundation of BC. This organization assists individuals with neurofibromatosis. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.

East Van Improv League – Havana Restaurant – November 12, 2017

Instant Theatre is launching the East Van Improv League. On hand will be veteran broadcasters to help ignite the rivalry and guide you through the action. This event happens Sunday in the theatre tucked in the back of Havana Restaurant.  Fun kicks off at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $8.00 at the door.

WISE Wednesday Drop-In Stich & Craft- Wise Hall – November 15, 2017

East Van Panto – Snow White & The Seven Dwarves At The York Theatre

SnowWhiteEastVanPantoWe were going to wait until after Halloween to tell you about this upcoming holiday tradition, but we just can’t wait. The East Van Panto is a favourite event we look forward to every year and this show never ceases to disappoint. Celebrating its 5th year, the East Van Panto is back with an outrageous take on Snow White. In this East Van tale, our hero flees the Queen of North Vancouver across the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge and lands straight into the madness of the PNE, where she dances with SuperDogs, hops a ride on the Wooden Roller Coaster, and befriends washed-up ‘80s rock stars “The Seven Dwarves”. Pure Panto hilarity ensues as they do everything they can to escape the Queen’s wicked clutches.

“It is really hard to believe that we are doing the East Van Panto for a fifth year!”, says The Cultch’s Executive Director, Heather Redfern. “So many people tell me that it’s a holiday tradition for their family and friends, and that just warms my heart because the Panto is all about celebrating local artists, local places, and local families. This year, we are presenting Snow White & the Seven Dwarves – who just happen to have landed at the PNE! I mean what could be more fun to sing and dance about than that?! The East Van Panto is for everybody and it’s made here especially for us.”

There is amazing cast of talent behind this production.  The East Van Panto is open to all ages 5 and up. Tickets start at $22, family packs are available which include 4 tickets for $135.  Note, all seats for ages 18 and under are $22.  Tickets are available at The Cultch either in person, by phone or online. The shows previews November 29th and November 30th and continues until January 6, 2018. Parade of Lost Souls – East Van – October 28, 2017

This iconic East Van produced by the Dusty Flowerpot happens Saturday night and will feature costumes, live music, Thriller Flash Mob, parade of lost souls of course. This year’s theme Alter Ego. Costumes are highly encouraged.  This is an all ages event with an after party at the Legion for the adults, if not sold out, which it generally is right before the event.

Halloween Drive-In Movies – River District – October 28 & 29, 2017

Wesgroup Properties and Fresh Air Cinemas brings you double feature drive-in movies to SE Vancouver along the Fraser River (Boundary Road and SE Marine Drive). Saturday, October 28th they will be starting off the evening with a showing of Casper followed by The Shining.  There will be a second round of movies Sunday, October 29th (rescheduled for the rained out event October 21st) with starts off with ET and is followed by Friday the 13th.  Perfect shows for Halloween weekend.  Cost if $20 per carload for 1 movie, $30 per carload for double feature.

Tango Lessons – Italian Cultural Centre – October 27, 2017

Night For All Souls – Mountain View Cemetery – October 28, 2017 

The 13th Annual All Souls Night happens this Saturday from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm at Mountain View Cemetery, 5455 Fraser Street.  The event creates a sanctuary for remembrance and reflection. You are encouraged to bring a lantern and candles as well as photos if you wish to create a memorial for a loved one in a gentle atmosphere of contemplative beauty. Dream Horror Live Haunted House – Casa Verde – To October 31, 2017 

We’ve learnt that off a quiet little street in East Van in Cedar Cottage, there is a haunted house which features 21 live actors, trap rooms and crawl spaces, clowns and creepy dolls.  One of the organizers, Mikayla Sorensen, states it’s what nightmares are made of.  Entry is $10 at the door the fun starts each evening at 7:30 pm. Are you a fan of the Rocky Horror Picture Show?  This weekend is your chance to catch it at the Rio Theatre with other fans. It’s a triple threat this weekend with showings of the movie Friday at 11:30 pm, Saturday at 11:45 and Sunday night at 10:00 pm.   Prefer something a little lighter, Beetlejuice is showing Friday at 6:30 pm. Halloween Events In East Vancouver

HalloweenPumpkin&LanternIf you are looking for something to do for Halloween, there are no lack of events this year. We have set out a sampling of some of the events happening in East Van.  If you plan on staying in this Halloween and catching up on a scary flick or two,  we recommend stopping into Black Dog Video on Commercial Drive to stock up.   If you want to go out and play, here’s What’s On: 

Parade of Lost Souls. This popular East Van tradition is back on Saturday, October 28th. This year’s theme is Alter Ego. The exact location of the event will be announced at midnight on October 28th on the Dusty Flowerpot website. As in past years, you can expect a parade of wild costumes, giant puppets, live music by East Van’s own Carnival Band among others, a Thriller Flash Mob and performance art created by local community members. The event features the Parade of Lost Souls which takes place near the ‘to be announced location in East Vancouver from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. This event is free and for all ages. Costumes are encouraged. For those wishing to carry on after the parade, there is an After Party at The Legion on Commercial Drive from 9:30 pm until 2:00 am.

Fright Nights. Playland is hosting 8 haunted houses including a new Keepers Doll Factory, 20 rides (5 more than last year we hear).  Fright Nights is on October 6th to October 31st (enter E. Hastings & Windermere). Tickets are available online at FrightNights.ca and can be purchased for a specific night.

Rio Theatre. The Rio has you covered leading up to Halloween. They kick things off on Friday night with Beetlejuice followed by Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Rocky Horror Picture Show rounding out the evening.   They’ve got you covered all weekend long two more showings of The Horror Picture Show on the Saturday and Sunday nights.  Plus Sunday a showing of Poltergeist and The Ghostbusters.

80s Halloween  Party – Federico’s Supper Club is hosting an 80s Halloween Party on Friday, October 27th. The evening includes a 3 course dinner with a live music show by Mark Olexson and The A-Deez which sets the night up for dancing to great 80s music.

COMMUNITY EVENTS FOR THE WEE ONES

Trout Lake Community Centre: Halloween Celebration – Saturday, October 28th 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.  You are invited to come jump in the bouncy castle, play Halloween games, and make some pumpkin crafts. Lots more surprises planned for the wee ones. There is a cost of $4.00 per child.

Hastings Sunrise Pumpkin Patch:  On Saturday, October 28th Hastings Elementary School is hosting their 2nd Annual Pumpkin Patch Festival. Grab a pumpkin, a bite and enjoy some live music from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Admission by donation.

Spook-Tacular Science World On The Road: River District is hosting some Halloween down along the Fraser River Saturday, October 28th from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm with a live science show happening from 1:00 – 1:30 pm after which they’ll have ‘science on the spot’ demo stations for everyone to experience.

Halloween On The Drive: Commercial Drive Business Improvement Society is hosting some family friendly events throughout the day on Saturday, October 28th with many local businesses participating and handing out Halloween candy. From 6:00 to 7:30 pm in Grandview Park, the Commercial Drive Business Society is hosting free family fun including face painting, balloon twisting, caricatures and photo booths for those that want pics on their costume. The night will be topped off with fireworks from 7:30 to 8:00 pm in Grandview Park.Halloween-SpiderWebs

Halloween Drive-In Movie – River District – October 21, 2017

Looking to get a head start on the Halloween fun, you can take in a Drive-Movie at River District in SE Vancouver this Saturday night. Fresh Air Cinemas will be showing ET at 7:00 pm followed by Friday the 13th – Part 3 in 3D following at approximately 9:30 pm.   Cost is $20 per carload for 1 movie or $30 per carload for 2 movies. Oktoberfest – The Alpen Club – October 20 & 21, 2017

If you are looking to take in some live jazz this weekend, Pat’s Brew Pub has the Ben Henriques Set on Saturday, October 21st from 3-7 pm.  Sunday Tangent Cafe features more live jazz with Nicholas Bracewell from 6-9 pm. If you are looking for live theatre, Viva is on Friday and Saturday night at Havana. It’s a story of unconditional love. Parade Of Lost Souls October 28, 2017

ParadeofLostSouls2017The Parade of Lost Souls is back for another year on Saturday, October 28th. This iconic East Van event is one of our favourites in part because of the all out collaboration and community effort it takes to put this event together.  For those not familiar with the Parade of Lost Souls, it is a community-driven event celebrating Dia de Muertos (The Day of the Dead). The event includes a parade somewhere in the heart of East Van that includes performance art, live music, interactive art installations and lost souls. The Day of the Dead is a time for celebration, for ceremony, for reflection and renewal.  The Parade of Lost Souls was initially conceptualized and produced by the Public Dreams Society for over 25 years. The parade now carries on under the direction of The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret.  Kudos to The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret for keeping this East Van tradition alive and well. For those planning this year’s costume, this year’s theme is Alter Ego.  Who or what is your alter ago?   Do you have an alternative personality?  Bring them out to play on October 28th.

This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, October 28th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The location will be revealed at midnight on October 27th on the Dusty Flowerpot website as well as the Dusty Flowerpot Facebook page. If you are interested in participating in this year’s events, we invite you to check out one of our favourite features the Thriller Flashmob. There will be dance workshops taking place at the Britannia Community Center leading up to the event.  There are 3 workshops currently scheduled on October 19th, 21st and 22nd.  Following the Parade, for all of those souls that want to keep the party going, the Lost Souls After-Party will be taking place at The Legion on Commercial Drive from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am. The after party will feature a number of musical performances. Tickets are available in advance through Brown Paper Tickets and they are expected to sell out. So if you wish to bring your ghoulish self to dance, be prepared to pick up your tickets pronto.

Voting Day – City of Vancouver By-Election – October 14, 2017

This Saturday, October 14th is voting day in the City of Vancouver’s by-election. This vacant seat is filling the chair left by Geoff Meggs who left to work in provincial politics with Premier John Horgan.  There are some fresh faces running who wish to make a difference in our civic landscape.  If you wish to know who is up for this vacant Council seat, Vancouver is Awesome, has a quick rundown on each candidate.  Whomever you decide to vote for, as always, we encourage you to have your say.  Polls are open 8:00 am to 8:00 pm To find out where to vote, visit City of Vancouver. 

Fall Record Convention – Heritage Hall – October 15, 2017 

A semi-annual record convention is happening at Heritage Hall this Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. Admission is $30.  You will, of course, find tables packed with records, CDs and more.
The Drive Season 2 Premiere – Rio Theatre – October 15, 2017
This locally produced show premieres its second season this Sunday at the Rio Theatre. Advance tickets are $13 or $15 at the door. Screening begins at 7:00 pm.  The show’s premise features 6 roommates living on Commercial Drive facing the realities of adulthood.

Thriller Flashmob – Britannia Community Centre – October 19, 2017
The Parade of Lost Souls is coming on October 28th. With it comes a host of great workshops at Britannia Community Centre. One of them is the Thriller Flashmob. Learn the dance moves and participate in the Thriller Flashmob during the event Saturday, October 28th.  This is one of 3 classes, the next classes follow on October 21st and 22nd.

Friday is the last chance to catch the films from the 36th Annual Vancouver Film Festival at the Rio Theatre. This Sunday, Cafe Deux Soleils hosts live music by Travis James with Portraits of Us. Show begins at 8:00 pm.
