Farm To Table – A New Kind Of Dinner Theatre Coming To The Cultch

9 Oct

The Cultch invites you to join them for a truly unique interactive experience. Farm To Table comes to their stage and your kitchen November 17 to 21, 2021.  Think of it as a Zoom cooking lesson with some drama and a whole lot of laughs. The added bonus is that you can cook along with the show.

Farm to Table is a new kind of dinner theatre in which Nadine, a struggling restauranteur has broken up with her boyfriend, closed her restaurant and moved-in with her mother.  Things are going smashing as you can tell. In an attempt to get back on her feet, she’s pivoted her passion for making delicious food into creating an online cooking show.   This is where the fun begins.

The Cultch has partnered with FreshPrep which ticket gets you the Chef’s Kiss Package delivered to your door so you can cook along with the show. Of course, if you prefer, you can buy your own groceries to cook, or just watch the fun unfold via Zoom.  Prices start at $29 for a solo ticket show and up to $69 for the Chef’s Kiss Package which, of course, includes your ticket for Farm To Table.  To purchase your ticket, visit The Cultch.

Volunteers Needed For Community Planting Event October 24th

2 Oct

Local group Free The Fern is hosting a Community Planting Event on October 24th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. They are on the hunt for volunteer planters.

For a bit of history for those unfamiliar with this group’s work, Free the Fern is an environmental stewardship group formed in 2021 that is located in South Vancouver. Their 20 members have spent over 360 volunteer hours removing 49 tons of invasive weeds from the Champlain Heights Trail. Thanks to a TD Park People Grant and donations from community members, they will now be replanting native plants along this forested trail some of which include perennial flowers, berries and ferns.

They need volunteers to make this event a success.  Free the Fern is on the hunt for volunteers of all ages and abilities to sign up to help on October 24th. There are opportunities as well for those who may not be up for the physical work of planting.  To sign up or ask questions, you can email organizers directly at freethefern@gmail.com or sign up with the Google Documents Volunteer Sign-Up Form.

The Firehall Arts Centre Kicks Off Their 39th Season With Chapter 21

9 Sep

The Firehall Arts Centre has just announced its 39th season, and Artistic Producer Donna Spencer has proudly programmed it as a Reunion Season.  “We have heard from Firehall audiences how much they miss theatre and dance in their lives,” says Spencer. “And in our 2021-2022 season, we are looking forward to having a reunion – a reunion with them and with the artists and creative teams we have missed so much. In some instances, the productions will be reuniting the Firehall with artists we haven’t worked with for a long time, and in others, our creative teams will be exploring stories that reunite characters with their past.”

With that in mind, the Firehall Arts Centre opens its 2021-2022 season with the world premiere of Raven Spirit Dance’s Chapter 21 from September 29 to October 3, 2021.  Choreographed by Starr Muranko and directed by Yvette Nolan, Chapter 21 explores what happens when a vibrant, powerful artist comes face to face with a crippling collision of events. A dance/theatre piece, Chapter 21 is a reflection on the days that have come to pass and the art of becoming. To purchase tickets for this upcoming performance, visit Firehall Arts Centre.

Who Is Watering The City’s Boulevard Trees?

11 Jul

We are living through an unprecedented heat wave which should be no surprise to anyone on the WestCoast. We have not seen any rain in going on 6 weeks now. The trees in our City are important for so many reasons such as mitigating climate change, providing shade to keep us cool, the abundant urban wildlife and the list goes on. In my neighbourhood, each summer when we have a stretch of summer weather without rain, I make a point of watering some of the area’s boulevard trees. Two things happen when I do this, one people say thank you. Two, others get inspired to do the same. I personally would have liked to have seen some communication from the City of Vancouver to encourage Vancouver residents to water boulevard trees they were physically able to or within reach of their home by hose or watering can, but that hasn’t happened. With climate change and its affects being top of mind for so many with forest fires raging in our province, I think preserving the abundant tree canopy in the City where we can is important for human life and urban wildlife.

So with that, I encourage you to adopt a tree(s) on your street and water where you can. If you wish to read more on this, CBC has done a recent feature “Vancouver trees dry out as heat wave continues to take its toll.” And if you wish to read further on the disparity of tree cover between the East Side and the West Side, we invite you to check out this piece by Christopher Cheung in the Tyee Vancouver Shade Inequality. We’ve copied in a great image from Christopher’s piece from Urban Forest Strategy, 2018 update, City of Vancouver which highlights the importance of trees in our urban landscape.
