The 5th Annual Knit City takes place at the PNE Forum this weekend. If you love to knit or want to learn, this is the event for you. There will be a variety of workshops, demonstrations, book signings, tips and a host of vendors on hand with everything you need to knit. If you are interested in the workshops, the deadline for registration is Wednesday, September 28th. The event runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on October 1st and 2nd. Admission is $10 per day or $15 for a weekend pass, children under 12 are free (admission is cash only). If you get hungry, some delish food trucks will be on hand including C’est Si Bon, NamaChickpea, Vainicey Pakoras, Melt City, Culver City Salads and Serious Sausage. So whether you are looking for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, meat or coffee, they’ve got you covered. Added bonus is the Girl Guides of Canada will be on hand, so if you are craving their chocolate mint cookies, you will find them at the PNE Forum this weekend. In case you hadn’t heard, one of Vancouver’s biggest showcases for one-of-a-kind handmade goods comes to East Van this weekend, Make It Vancouver! It’s their Spring show with almost 200 makers, designers, artisans and crafters. As you might expect, there will be an amazing selection of items including fashion, accessories, jewellery, art, baby items, home décor and our personal favourite, food! There is great line up of vendors including some favourites such as French Made Baking, Rootables, The Salt Dispensary, Trudy Ann’s Chai & Spices, Jules & Kent and The Local Churn to a name a few. On deck for home décor is another strong line up and includes a personal favourite we’ve featured here previously on the site East Van Light. If you are looking for some gift items whether for Mother’s Day or an upcoming birthday, this is the place to be. And if you think it’s all for the women, think again. There will be something for everyone on hand. Add to that, for all you hungry shoppers, there will be food trucks and a beer garden. Make It Vancouver! takes place at the PNE Forum on Friday, April 22nd from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, then continues on Saturday, April 23rd from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm with their last day being, Sunday, April 24th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is $5 at the door which allows you to shop all of the 3 days, admission is free for kids 12 and under. See you there.

Knit City ‘A Modern Fibre Event’ happens on October 3rd and 4th at the PNE Forum, 2901 East Hastings Street. If you are a maker and love to knit or want to learn, this is the event for you. There will be a variety of workshops all day long, plus demonstrations, tips, tricks and much more. There is quite the extensive list of vendors. For a full rundown of who will be at this weekend’s event, we invite you to visit Knit City. If you get hungry, quite a few food trucks will be on hand including Varinicey Pakoras and Taser Grilled Cheese, Big Red’s Poutine, Disco Cheetah, Serious Sausage and Johnny Pops. Admission to the event is $10 per day (children under 12 are free). Your admission includes free demonstrations, book signings and a chance to win a gift basket filled with items from participating vendors. Event runs 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day.

River District Drive-In Movies This Summer Starting July 12th

Well it’s time to get a little nostalgic folks. River District is hosting drive-in movies this summer. For those that have never experienced a drive-in movie, now’s your chance. River District will be hosting four of them starting this Sunday with a personal favourite, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. This is a classic 80s movie to which you are encouraged to wear your 80s garb. Also on hand for this event, will be a selection of food trucks. They anticipate the following line up for Sunday’s feature movie:

The River District Drive-In is located at 3650 E. Kent Avenue South which is located just west of Boundary Way and before Kinross Street in SE Vancouver. Gates open at 6:30 pm and the movie gets under way at dusk (approx. 8:00 pm). River District will provide you with the FM station for audio, so a working radio/FM station will round out your experience.

Food Truck Fest February At Vancouver Farmers Market – Nat Bailey Stadium

Vancouver Farmers Market invites you to Food Truck Fest starting Saturday, February 7th at Nat Bailey Stadium. Vancouver Farmers Market plans on a bit of a competition amongst the participating food trucks at this month’s event. There will be several honours bestowed. VFM will be challenging each of the food trucks to come up with a new Market Menu item and you get to decide which one is the best. While the food trucks work on their new Market Menu item, they will be asked to submit their sources so they can determine who is using the most local ingredients for Most Local honours. Next up is Judge’s Choice. A panel of esteemed judges (to be announced) will sample all the Market Menu items and decide which one is the best.
Food Truck February is a zero waste event. All food trucks are asked to use only compostable or recyclable serving containers and utensils. There will be lots of seating and heaters to keep everyone warm and of course there will amazing live music. Vancouver Farmers Market kicks off Saturday at 10:00 am and runs till 2:00 pm at Nat Bailey Stadium with an amazing line up of local vendors as well as all the delicious food trucks. Note keep an eye out for some construction in the area, the market may get moved across the street to Riley Park. Watch Vancouver Farmers Market website for updates.

Food Truck Festival Coming to SE Vancouver NOW POSTPONED TO 2015
11 JulRiver District is pleased to announce the launch of their Food Truck Festival which kicks off on Sunday, July 27th. The Festival will be located at East Kent Avenue at Kinross Street (located between Boundary Road and Kerr Street). They are still in the process of compiling vendors, so if you are a food truck vendor and interested, fill out the application form. At present, they have a few local food trucks lined up including San Juan Food Truck, Sweet Ride Fro Yo and Tandoori Tikka Dogs. Keep an eye on their website for updates on what we expect will be a growing list of vendors The Festival will take place every Sunday from July 27th to August 24th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
UPDATE: River District has announced this event has now been postponed until 2015.
BC Derby and BC Oaks 2013 Sunday, Sept. 8th At Hastings Racecourse
7 SepThe BC Derby is billed as the “Most Beautiful Day in Racing”. Everyone is encouraged to wear their finery and yes, we are talking hats and fascinators. You will automatically be entered into the 2nd Annual Best Dressed Contest and could win a shopping spree by Jack & Jill or Baracos + Brand. For those serious about their bets, there will be 6 Massive Stakes Races worth over $500,000 in total purse money. There will also be some local food trucks on hand including Flattop Filipino Fusion, Blue Smoke BBQ and Didi’s Greek. Local singing sensation, Cole Armour, will be performing the national anthem. Admission is free. Racing begins at 12:50 pm at the Hastings Racecourse.
