Opening Doors – Firehall Arts Centre – November 8 & 9

Opening Doors is now on at the Firehall Arts Centre until Saturday.  This production features stories about Vancouver’s East End. Women from many different cultural heritages and backgrounds help build the vibrant community surrounding the Firehall. You are invited to learn more about the history of this area. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students. For tickets, visit the Firehall Arts Centre.

About Love Festival – Havana Theatre – November 8, 9 & 10 

Havana Theatre which is in Havana Restaurant, 1212 Commercial Drive, plays host to the Above Love Festival this Friday and Saturday night as well as a matinee showing this Sunday.  The show features 8 short plays selected for a hundred submitted from around the world. Tickets are $27.50 and available through Showpass.

Secret Life of Canada – Rio Theatre – November 8

The Vancouver Podcast Festival happens at the Rio Theatre this weekend.  The event aims to foster new podcast creation in BC and Canada while highlighting existing talent.   There is an interesting one being featured this Friday, The Secret Life of Canada with interesting history and facts you may not know.   Like did you know Vancouver is responsible for the Chinese buffet and the egg carton? You are invited to join hosts Falen Johnson, Leah-Simone Bowen as they dive into some interesting Canadian history.  Show starts at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $25 (Students $20) and available at the Rio Theatre.

Come Draw With Me: Alicia Tobin – Little Mountain Gallery – November 9

You are invited to join comedian Alicia Tobin and her special guests at Little Mountain Gallery, 195 E 26th Ave, Vancouver) for Come Draw with Me this Saturday night. This is an evening of drawing that is part art class part comedy show.  Supplies are provided, no talent or previous experience are required.  You are invited to come have fun and get creative. Event gets under way at 8:00 pm. Advance tickets are $10 or you can purchase them at the door for $12.

Repair Café – Killarney Community Centre – November 9

If you have a small broken appliance, maybe a button that needs to be sewn on a shirt, or a hem that needs fixing on your dress pants, you best get yourself to the Repair Café being held at the Killarney Community Centre, 6260 Killarney Street this Saturday. There will volunteers with various stations to assist in repair and/or show you how to do it yourself.  Event goes from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Vancouver Train Expo – PNE Forum – November 9 & 10

If you love trains, no matter your age, you may wish to head to the PNE Form this weekend. The Vancouver Train Expo happens with something for all ages, but we hear there are a host of activities for kids.  The event happens Saturday and Sunday and begins at 10:00 am each day. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for kids 6-15 years and children 6 and under free with an adult. To learn more, visit Vancouver Train Expo.

Movie ‘Judy’ – Rio Theatre – November 10 & 11

Renee Zellweger brings Judy Garland’s life back to the big screen this weekend in Judy playing at the Rio Theatre.  The reviews are good so far. “Renée Zellweger is phenomenally good in this captivating account of Judy Garland’s final London concert run.” (The Guardian)  If you are looking for some indoor fun, the movie play this Saturday at 3:00 pm and Sunday at 4:00 pm.

Do you love cartoons? Miss those Saturday morning cartoons you used to watch as a kid. Do you know Storm Crow Tavern offers cartoons Saturday morning from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm whilst you enjoy breakfast/brunch?

Also 7 days a week, you will find live music at the Libra Room on The Drive. Tangent Café hosts live jazz Sunday nights  from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Saturday, Pat’s Pub has live jazz Saturday afternoons from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, no cover.

Saturday It’s ONLY one market.  Reminder, Trout Lake Farmers Market is done for the season, so it’s Riley Park Farmers Market at 30th & Ontario from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Make It! – PNE Forum – April 19th to 21st 

Make It! Vancouver is at the PNE Forum Friday to Sunday with over 200 makers.  Lots of great vendors including some local favs East Van Light, East Van Jam, Sarah Mulder Jewellery, Mameyo with beautiful handcrafted leather goods and Royal City Donuts, I mean honestly who doesn’t love donuts? Easter Family Event – Britannia Community Centre – April 20th 

Britannia Community Centre is hosting a free Easter Family Event in Gym D from Noon to 2:00 pm.  There will be a bouncy castle, games, crafts and of course treats for the kids.

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory – Rio Theatre April 20th 

A classic movie is playing at the Rio Theatre this Saturday Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. This is Gene Wilder at his best in his role as emperor of the world’s great candy empire. This is an all ages show that gets under way at 3:15 pm. To get your advance tickets, visit The Rio Theatre

Eggstravaganza – Hastings Park – April 21st

The Vancouver Farmers Market has teamed up with local egg producers to bring Eggstravaganza to Hastings Parking this Sunday.  They will have live chickens on hand, a heirloom egg display and free natural egg dyeing. Hastings Park Farmers Market happens from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Britannia Ice Rink – Free Skate – April 22nd

Britannia Ice Rink hosting a FREE public skate from 1:00 – 3:30 pm.  Skate rental included.

Earth Day – Everett Crowley Park – April 27th (NOTE CORRECTED DATE)

A great group of volunteers gather every year to plant trees in Everett Crowley Park in SE Vancouver. Everett Crowley Park is a 38-hectare large forested park and if you don’t know, was once a garbage dump. It is now Vancouver’s 5th largest park.  Saturday, April 27th, you can help plant one of a 1,000 trees from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. There will also be face painting for the kids and the opportunity to make your own chia pet courtesy of the folks at River District.

Documentary ‘Free Solo’ – Rio Theatre – April 22nd

Final screening of the documentary Free Solo happens at the Rio Theatre this Monday.  FREE SOLO is an Oscar nominated production that showcases the stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of the free soloist climber who prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of the world’s most famous rock, the 3,000 foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park without a rope. This is an edge-of-your seat thriller.  Free Solo shows Monday at 3:30 pm. For tickets, visit the Rio Theatre.

Looking for more live music, did you know The Heatley in Strathcona regularly features live music?  Every Sunday they offer bluegrass music with brunch 11 am – 3 pm.

Vancouver returns to the PNE Forum April 19 – 21, 2019 with over 200 makers.  This is the show of all shows, creator, Jenna Herbut, and her team always put together an amazing production that features a wide array of talents. The Spring Edition will feature accessories, jewellery, clothing, art, home décor, items for babies, kids and your 4 legged family members. We see a few personal favourites in the line up East Van Light, East Van Jam, Sarah Mulder Jewellery, Mameyo with beautiful handcrafted leather goods and Royal City Donuts, I mean honestly who doesn’t love donuts? Make It! At The PNE Forum December 12 -16, 2018

MakeIt!2018One of the biggest maker markets Make It! happens starting today and runs through to this Sunday, December 16th at the PNE Forum.  There is a whole lot of talent packed under one roof with over 215 makers in attendance.  Over the 5 days of Make It! you are bound to cross a whole lot of people off your gift giving list.  You can expect to find clothing, accessories, home décor, gourmet foods, items for kids and babies, art and much more. Did we mention a beer garden in case you get thirsty as well as food trucks on hand for sustenance.  Make It! kicks off this evening at 5:00 pm till 9:00 pm with drinks to toast their 10 year anniversary and continues through to Sunday. Admission is $8.00, kids 12 and under are free.

Make It! Vancouver At The PNE Forum April 20 – 22, 2018

MakeIt!This weekend one of the biggest shows featuring handmade goods happens at the PNE Forum.  Make It! Vancouver will be featuring 180 makers including a number of new makers.  The show will feature a host of items including accessories, home décor, delectable items to eat and drink, art, jewellery, leather goods, baby clothes and toys, accessories for your dogs. Whether you are looking for something for yourself, your kids, the house or your 4 legged friend, there is an amazing selection of items. Purchasing items at Make It! means you are supporting entrepreneurs who are building their own micro economy. All this goes a long way to supporting our local economy.   If that isn’t enough, there will be a beer garden along with food trucks.  Make It! Vancouver kicks off Friday, April 20th at 11:00 and goes till 9:00 pm that day and continues Saturday (10-6) and Sunday (11-5). Make It! At PNE Forum April 21 – 23

MakeIt!VancouverIf you haven’t heard of Make It! you may be living under a rock. This event founded by siblings Chandler Herbut and Jenna Herbut in 2008, showcases artists, crafters and makers from all over Canada. This year, you will find over 200 exhibitors or ‘Makies’ at the PNE Forum from April 21st to April 23rd. You will find a wide variety of items including some personal favourites such as Beth & Olivia, The Lemon Square, Sea Luxe, Sable Shortbread, Laughing Sparrow, East Van Light, Amara Blue DesignsDIG Leather, Irit Sorokin Designs and Tessa Manu Photography. Alright, so that’s a long list. These are some of the many we will be checking out this weekend.  Shopping isn’t the only thing happening at Make It! There will be music, food trucks and a beer garden as well as a silent auction with items donated by the makies with 100% of the proceeds to benefit the Union Gospel Mission. Make It! kicks off this Friday, April 21st at 11:00 am. Tickets are $5 at the door with kids under 12 free. 

 

Artisan Markets & Craft Fairs In East Vancouver 2016

SnowflakeTis the season is upon us for an array of craft markets and artisan fairs. The collection of local talent is rather awe inspiring when you attend any of these events. If you are looking for a gift for a birthday, anniversary or Christmas, you are likely to find something at any one of these markets. You will find an array of items including art work, pottery, clothing accessories, baked goods, local spirits, gifts for that foodie in your life or beard kits for the man in your life. Of course, it goes without saying these markets are a great way to support local enterprising entrepreneurs.  Each market has its own unique feel, whether you are looking for a smaller market such as River District Winter Craft Fair or something on a bigger scale like Make It! At the PNE Fourm or Shiny Muddy Fuzzy.  We have set out below a rundown in date order of the upcoming markets in East Van for November and December. Knit City At The PNE Forum October 1- 2

PurpleYarnThe 5th Annual Knit City takes place at the PNE Forum this weekend.  If you love to knit or want to learn, this is the event for you.  There will be a variety of workshops, demonstrations, book signings, tips and a host of vendors on hand with everything you need to knit. If you are interested in the workshops, the deadline for registration is Wednesday, September 28th.  The event runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on October 1st and 2nd. Admission is $10 per day or $15 for a weekend pass, children under 12 are free (admission is cash only).   If you get hungry, some delish food trucks will be on hand including C’est Si Bon, NamaChickpea, Vainicey Pakoras, Melt City, Culver City Salads and Serious Sausage. So whether you are looking for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, meat or coffee, they’ve got you covered.  Added bonus is the Girl Guides of Canada will be on hand, so if you are craving their chocolate mint cookies, you will find them at the PNE Forum this weekend. For a full rundown of vendors and workshops, we invite you to check out Knit City 2016.  If you are unable to attend this weekend’s event, but want to learn how to knit, we invite you to check out Baaad Anna’s Yarn Store on 2667 East Hastings Street.  They have a variety of workshops for all ages and levels of experience.

Make It Vancouver! At The PNE Forum April 22-24

MakeIt!In case you hadn’t heard, one of Vancouver’s biggest showcases for one-of-a-kind handmade goods comes to East Van this weekend, Make It Vancouver!  It’s their Spring show with almost 200 makers, designers, artisans and crafters.  As you might expect, there will be an amazing selection of items including  fashion, accessories, jewellery, art, baby items, home décor and our personal favourite, food! There is great line up of vendors including some favourites such as French Made Baking, Rootables, The Salt Dispensary, Trudy Ann’s Chai & Spices, Jules & Kent and The Local Churn to a name a few.  On deck for home décor is another strong line up and includes a personal favourite we’ve featured here previously on the site East Van Light.  If you are looking for some gift items whether for Mother’s Day or an upcoming birthday, this is the place to be.  And if you think it’s all for the women, think again.  There will be something for everyone on hand.  Add to that, for all you hungry shoppers, there will be food trucks and a beer garden.    Make It Vancouver! takes place at the PNE Forum on Friday, April 22nd from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, then continues on Saturday, April 23rd from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm with their last day being, Sunday, April 24th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.   Admission is $5 at the door which allows you to shop all of the 3 days, admission is free for kids 12 and under. Knit City At The PNE Forum October 3 & 4

PurpleYarnKnit City ‘A Modern Fibre Event’ happens on October 3rd and 4th at the PNE Forum, 2901 East Hastings Street. If you are a maker and love to knit or want to learn, this is the event for you.  There will be a variety of workshops all day long, plus demonstrations, tips, tricks and much more. There is quite the extensive list of vendors.  For a full rundown of who will be at this weekend’s event, we invite you to visit Knit City.  If you get hungry, quite a few food trucks will be on hand including Varinicey Pakoras and Taser Grilled Cheese, Big Red’s Poutine, Disco Cheetah, Serious Sausage and Johnny Pops.  Admission to the event is $10 per day (children under 12 are free). Your admission includes free demonstrations, book signings and a chance to win a gift basket filled with items from participating vendors. Event runs 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day.
