The Britannia Plaza Market Returns This Summer

The Britannia Plaza Market is an outdoor event that takes place just outside of the Britannia Community Centre and is back for another year.  The market will run every Wednesday from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm from June 22nd to October 5th.   The market will also run every Saturday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm from June 25th to September 10th.

You are invited to stop by and check out some local producers, artists and makers which will showcase a variety of items each week including fresh produce, homemade treats, artisanal goods and much more.

Conversation On Non-Market Housing For Britannia Renewal This June

If you live in Grandview-Woodlands, you are invited to join the conversation on non-market housing at the renewed Britannia site. The Britannia Renewal Master Plan identifies the addition of non-market housing at the renewed Britannia site. This is your opportunity to provide your thoughts and any concerns during this online forum. They are looking to have a diverse range of voices and perspectives from the community. In order to achieve that, they are hosting 3 Zoom events on different dates and times. We’ve set out the dates and times below. Registration is optional, but if you wish to register, visit Eventbrite for the date that you wish to participate.

Good news though, seems sunshine is in the forecast.  The Great Grandview Garage Sale takes place, as the name eludes, throughout the Grandview-Woodlands area of East Vancouver. Specifically from Broadway to the Burrard Inlet and from Clark Drive to Nanaimo Street. East Vancouver History Walk With James Johnstone

EastEndWalkingTourJamesJames Johnstone is back with his popular historical walking tours this February and March. On Saturday, March 10th, James will take you on a tour of one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Strathcona. The tour kicks off at 10:00 a.m. starting from 696 East Hastings at Heatley. This historical walking tour is a culmination of years of researching over 250 homes in the East End. Although you will find architecture is a theme on this tour, James will also focus on social history and how waves of immigrants established themselves in this area before moving on to other parts of the city. The tour will also touch on the impact of portside industries like BC Sugar, the prohibition and the proliferation of bootlegging as well as the City of Vancouver’s attempts to wipe out “urban blight”.   If you can’t make March 10th, he will be doing this tour again on March 24th.  On March 17th, James will host a history walk  of the Working/Wild Side of Vancouver’s East End. Each tour runs for approximately 2 to 2.5 hours and last we heard the cost was $20 for each tour. National Doughnut Day – June 2, 2017

June 2nd is National Day and well we think it’s a great day to show some locals like Cartems Donuts, Duffin’s Donuts and Lucky’s Doughnuts some East Van love. If you are looking for gluten free doughnuts, we suggest you try the Gluten Free Epicurean in Mount Pleasant.

Vancouver Craft Beer Festival – June 3-4, 2017

This weekend the PNE Fairgrounds plays host to the 8th Annual Vancouver Craft Beer Week Festival June 3-4, 2017. This year’s festival, outside of great craft beer, includes a long line up of local musical talent including Alex Maher, Mark Woodyard, Railtown Prophets as well as DJs spinning tunes. Tickets for the event are $39.00 and include 2 drink tokens along with a 4 oz souvenir taster mug. Note, more drink tickets can be purchased on site.  

Farmer Markets – June 3 & 4, 2017

This weekend you have the benefit of 3 farmer markets. Saturday you have Vancouver Farmers Market which hosts a one of the larger markets at Trout Lake from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Another option is the River District Farmers Market from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm located on the Fraser River at the foot of Kerr Street (at East Kent Avenue).  If Sunday’s a better day for you, stop by the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market at Dude Chilling Park which happens from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

15th Annual Heritage House Tour (Strathcona) – June 4, 2017

The Vancouver Heritage Foundation hosts the 15th Annual Heritage House Tour on Sunday, June 4th. This year, they will be visiting homes in Strathcona to see the completed renovation of Places That Matter site which is the Walter and Mary Chan House.  It is significant for its connection to SPOTA and a fight to save Strathcona from freeway development in the 1960s.  This is just one of many homes on the tour.  Tickets are $40 or $30 for students and are available online.

Entertainment: Arts, Theatre, Comedy & Live Music

This weekend, lots happening at The Cultch. June 3rd is your last opportunity to catch the powerful show Children of God.  rEvolver Festival continues through to June 4th with a number of great shows at The Cultch including Vampires in Barcelona and Spawn.  rEvovler Festival is also showcasing a new kind of game show All The Way at the Russian Hall.  If it’s comedy you are after, Instant Theatre hosts sketch comedy at the theatre in Havana Restaurant Friday and Saturday nights at 10:30 pm.

Emergency Preparedness Workshop – June 6, 2017

The City of Vancouver hosts a free Emergency Preparedness Workshop at Britannia Community Centre from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. There are currently 23 spots open. We’d like to see this fill up. We recently attended one of these workshops and highly recommend them. Great information, it’s free and it is only 1 hour and 30 minutes of your time. Grandview-Woodland Plaza Exploration – Thursday, June 8, 2017

 “The City of Vancouver has been approached by the development team about a potential redevelopment of the Safeway site located at 1780 East Broadway, at Commercial Drive. The Grandview-Woodland Community Plan provides guidance about how this site should redevelop and sets a requirement to provide a new at- grade public plaza on the site.  The development team is proposing that the plaza be located at an alternative location nearby. While this is a variation from the approved Community Plan, the City wants to work with the community to give this new idea its due consideration.   To introduce and explore the idea of an alternative plaza location, the City is hosting an event. The primary purpose of the event is to assess the degree of community support for the new plaza idea.” This is a free event, but advance registration is required.  If you are interested in hearing what’s planned, this is your opportunity to hear information and provide your feedback. To register, visit Eventbrite.

Great Grandview Garage Sale Returns June 17, 2017

GreatGrandviewGarageSaleLogoFor all you bargain and vintage hunters, it is time to once again mark your calendars for the Great Grandview Garage Sale which is back on Saturday, June 17th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. This  multi-family garage sale now in its 4th year draws a crowd even in the rain which we hear put a bit of a damper on things last year. This event takes place throughout the Grandview-Woodlands area of East Vancouver. Specifically from Broadway to the Burrard Inlet and from Clark Drive to Nanaimo Street. If you live in the area, you are invited to participate and it is FREE to sign up. Note though, for organizers there is some effort to put it all together and get signs printed. This year you will see a ‘Donate’ button on their main page. Organizers are asking for a small donation of $2-5 to cover the cots of signs and for a $10 donation they will thrown in a sign for you. Having done a fair bit of organizing in our day, we think this is more than fair.  Whether you live in a home, walk up apartment building, co-operative housing, no matter, everyone is welcome to participate. If you are the one looking for those bargains or vintage finds, think of it as one big treasure hunt. Who knows what you might come across in your travels. Eastside Culture Crawl – Bits, Bites, Beer & More On The Crawl

foodimageFor all those participating in this year’s Eastside Culture Crawl which is taking place November 17- 20, 2016, we have a few thoughts on where to stop to refuel. We know from first hand experience all that walking on the Crawl makes you hungry and thirsty and the opportunity to put your feet up for a bit, is a welcome one.   With that in mind, we thought we would set out some delish spots to check out for a bite, refreshment or more.  As the Crawl covers a great deal of ground, we have set it out by geographic area. Since our experience has been to pick a general area to concentrate on and stop in at a number of artists within walking distance.

Hastings Sunrise

In Hastings Sunrise, there is no lack of choices along the stretch of East Hastings. Some great options include Roundel Café, Jackalope’s Dive and Red Wagon Café for brunch for starters. For coffee, we’d hit Platform 7 Coffee. Of course, for lunch or brunch, Tacofino Commissary is a no brainer anytime. If you have a hankering for something sweet, well a couple of great options include Black Rook Bakehouse and East Village Bakery.

Grandview Woodlands

If you are wandering in the Grandview Woodlands area, you could start with breakfast or lunch at Scandillious at 25 Victoria Drive. Looking for coffee? We’d hit Pallet Roasters.  If it’s a stop for beer or a cocktail, check out Parallel 49 Brewing, Doan’s Craft Brewing, Storm Brewing or Odd Society Spirits.  Looking for something sweet, well the Pie Shoppe on Powell Street at Victoria has that covered off with a selection of handmade chocolate from Melt Confections on hand along with their amazing pie. If you are looking for dinner after the Crawl, Bistro Wagon Rogue that has casual French fare and it’s located right next to the Pie Shoppe on Powell Street.

Commercial Drive

On Commercial Drive you have a plethora of options whether it’s coffee, cocktails or a bite.  We couldn’t even begin to name them all, but a few that come to mind include Moja’s Coffee, Continental Coffee, The Drive Coffee Bar and Turks. For the perfect sandwhich to go (and big enough for two in most cases), we recommend La Grotta del Fromaggio. While there, we highly suggest a stop into Fratelli Bakery next door. If it’s brunch you are looking for, Havana Restaurant and is one of many great spots on the Drive. Just up the street you have Biercraft which also serves brunch and a great selection of beer.  Of course just a quick walk from The Drive down Venables is Uprising Breads for a great coffee and snack spot. Oh and we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention a favourite spot for licorice lovers, the Licorice Parlour.  If you are looking for pizza on The Drive, there are a few options Famoso, Lombardo’s, Marcello’s and just off The Drive on Victoria Drive is a personal favourite Via Tevere Pizzeria.

Strathcona/Railtown

Well there are some delish stops in this general area including the Settlement Building in Railtown which is a great spot for brunch before you start or a glass of beer or wine during or after. Les Amis du Fromage is hosting a Pop Up Shop with the Salty Cookie Company this Saturday, November 19th. So if you  have a sweet craving, we do encourage you stop by.  If you are looking for dinner after Ask for Luigi is in the area as is the MacKenzie Room directly across from Oppenheimer Park and The Heatley not far down the street.   If you wish to make a stop for coffee, the Wilder Snail in the heart of Strathcona is a quaint option.

Clark Drive

This is a developing area which we expect will be changing more in the coming years. Right now  it’s home to Strange Fellows Brewing which is featuring Moving Art as part of the Crawl, so beer and art under one roof. For coffee, check out Agro Roasters at Frances Avenue on Clark Drive. For sushi and something quick and reasonable, Fujiya at the corner of Clark and Venables. Of course, Yolks Breakfast at East Hastings has breakfast all day to fuel you and if it’s beer you are after Callister Brewing just off Clark on Franklin Street is a collaborative brewery which always has some great art on hand all year long.

Which every way you slice it and where you decide to Crawl, get out and see some great art!
